Alvastia Chronicles could have easily been part of the Dragon series. In fact, it has more in common with Dragon Sinker than even Lapis or Prana, thanks to the greatly expanded team mechanics.

This also feels like the best showcase of what makes Exe Create Inc such a criminally underrated developer of neo-retro JRPGs. A hero's journey with endearing characters that hook you from the start, consistently entertaining dialogue, addictive fast paced action, creative character and item enhancements, and fun mini game side activities. The post-game content is larger here than in any of the Dragon games, as well.

All of these things are refined here, and implemented smoothly. Nothing even remotely approaching the clunky Job Plate system in Lapis, or the limited store and hyperactive reward system of Prana.

You can combine weapons, and transfer effects from one to another. You can enhance your warriors, use burst attacks and more, but as usual, you'll be a living cuisinart long before you've explored every option. There are even tables to set under-used fighters to, to level them outside of battle.

Gathering fighters from all over the world becomes an obsession, and sometimes requires completing sub quests, or meeting other requirements first. Some can be gained from fighting in the arena, or through the gacha store. And in another connection to Sinker, ( spoiler ) you might just meet the Legendary Warriors.

If I count this as an actual sequel to the Dragon series, I would say play Dragon Sinker first, then Alvastia Chronicles, then Dragon Lapis, and skip Dragon Prana. Prana, for whatever reason, is bland and lacks the charm of Exe Create Inc's previous titles.

Alvastia Chronicles takes the formula that made the first two Dragon games so special, and polishes it to near perfection.

Hello friends,

Today i will write about the game Alvastia Chronicles. A ported mobile rpg game that has been put on steam. I never played the mobile phone version, so i will only review this version. The story is ok for a rpg, but don't be expected to be blown away by it. It also reminds me of older rpg's and retro games. The game has 100 recruitiable characters, where each one requires you a to do something to unlock, either kill xxx monsters, find a item, or find someone specific to get items from. Now, here are my pro/con list:

PROS:

- The story is ok, but do not expect anything groundbreaking.
- Retro style graphics type of game.
- 100 plus characters to recruit.
- 2 endings, depending on how long you play the game for.
- Controller worked fine..using logitech F310.

CONS:

- No fullscreen mode. You need to play it in windowed mode. Just increase the window to the size of your monitor and it should feel like full sized window.
- No achievments on game.
- Some dungeons have same music in them.
- In game store can be a bit confusing, but if you buy certain things in it, it can make the game easier and able to get past certain obstacles in the game.
- Some grinding is required if you want to play some area's and beat certain bosses. Store items can make some things easier.

Recommended only for die hard old style rpg fans. Newer fans of rpg's will be turned off the graphics quality and the way the game is setup to grind. If you do not like old school graphics and a basic storyline, then i suggest taking a pass on this game.

Don't wonder, I finished the game offline with every archivement.
So, after seeing the true end this are my thoughts about this game:
first: some of the reviews are fundamentally wrong. You don't need to farm for the currency needed in the special shop.
With just playing through the game you'll get enough money to buy everything you need.
And hey, I used simple weapons....there is absolut no need to buy high class weapons from that shop....if you have enough
cash your weapons are far better than those you can buy.

So lets talk about game mechanics: You can recruit 106 members and put them into groups. There are 3 main groups (consist of a leader and 3 members)....and later on you get the possible to put members into 2 tactical rooms (6 members each)...they will give you boosts in magic and melee.

There are 3 main parts for your characters:
a) you get exp. during fights...till level cap 99.
b) you get hope gems during fights and if a new member joins you. Those gems you can freely distribute on your members (again cap is 99) they boost their stats significant.
c) you can merge your weapons....the most interesting part of the game!!! Each weapon has the possibility to become a SUPER-WEAPON.

Now like most other games this one if far to easy. I mean I played in hard and expert and only the 2nd time I fought against the secret arena chef did I NOT use Autofight. Not once did I use healing or boost items.
Also this game lacks some comfort...there is no warp outside a dungeon...you must walk all the way back.
If you are searching for hidden treasure you can't set the encounter rate (like in most other Kemco games after you reached the final stage).
The part with the over 100 membes is useless...I never changed my parties.

That said...at last this one has an interesting story.
So I can recommend this game IF it is on sale...don't buy it for full prize.

This was a fun JRPG with a straightforward classic crystal focused story. The turn based combat features sub-characters with skills and attacks of their own that add a lot of options to your skill selections from battle to battle. There's some mobile port weirdness with UI and mechanics that don't match up, but the world is great to explore and there are loads of delightful pixel art characters to recruit. If you like retro JRPGs you'll like this one!

Ignore my time played, as I played this for free on the X Box gamepass and beat the game with the true ending.

Fun retro styled RPG from Kemco. It is like most other Kemco released RPGs in that everything is pretty generic and looks like it could have been made with RPG maker.

You go around the world, recruiting party members, trying to beat the big evil of the game. You get three party members, but each of them can have 3 companions with them, for a total of 12 members in the party.

During combat you can have a party member and all their companions attack or you can use a party member skill. Note that if you use a skill from one of your party members, all your other members of that group will do nothing for that turn. That said you best bet is usually to attack every turn with every character. This will get you through most of the game, as the game is really easy.

A big talking point for the game is the 100 party members you can collect. This is done in a suikoden style with you traveling around and talking to people. Some join right away, and some demand items or you to complete a quest or have some required stat. 9 of the people you recruit can be assigned to your party and another 16 can be assigned to two support squads that enhance you party abilities.

As far as extras, there is a crafting system, where you sacrifice unwanted weapons to make a weapon more powerful, a battle arena, a treasure chest dropping mechanic where you have to wait for a chest to open, an extra dungeon, a secret ending and a shop where you use tickets and currency you get from battles (not gold a different most likely premium at one time) to buy rare and powerful items. You can see from this and waiting for some chests to open that this game was intended to have optional purchasable currency, most likely when it was on mobile, but here you do not have the option to purchase extra currency.

There are extras to purchase, like extra XP and damage, but honestly the game is so easy you will not need them.

Took about 10 hours to beat the game and see the true ending, so it is a quick play.

All in all an inoffensive game. I would rate average if I could but since nothing is bad about the game I will give it a thumbs up.

So... This as an RPG that has many flaws. I love classic JRPGs, but this one here... This is a mobile RPG.
I tried to like this game. I really did. I slogged through it as much as I could trying to 100% it and I just can't find a reason to try to complete it anymore. It's too monotonous.

We have all played bad mobile games, but here's the rundown:

You are introduced in to a lootbox style system very early with a currency known as ALP, which is just another Gacha game mechanic suited for mobile. The only way to "farm" this currency is by being level 70-90 and it costing a ludicrous amount of gold even by end game standards. This lootbox game has the best weapons in the game with the best effects you will not get during a normal playthrough of the game which is where the mobile paywall would come in.
This ALP drops at random (Around 10-15% of the time) and is only given out an increments of 10. To roll for a chance of getting something good it costs 100 ALP, so you could very realistically spend a half hour or more to get a "common" item.
The ENTIRE game is centered around this system as to get anything useful or meaningful you will need to spend ALP in order to either get a chance for it, or buy it outright for a ludicrous amount of ALP.
The game even MAKES you autosave so you can't save-scum your lootbox roles for any semblance of happiness and fulfillment.

CONS:
Lootbox mechanics
An unhealthy amount of grinding even for the most veteran JRPG players
Rewards that force you to wait real time to open
No flipping fullscreen
No way to get viable weapons or weapon effects through normal play
Egregiously obvious points where they put a paywall for mobile users
Cringy incest dialog (It may be a plus for some, but not for me)
Non-intuitive game mechanics meant to make you grind more
Game mechanics that don't make sense until you read them better explained in the menu
Game mechanics that still don't make sense even if you read the description (Using the "super" moves)
Extremely lackluster story
Extremely repetitive soundtrack (There's only about 12 in the game and are re-used for new areas)
Broken progression if you get lucky on a lootbox roll
Broken drop rates for extremely mediocre rewards
Forced "cutscenes" every time you recruit a companion (There's freaking 103) and companions being blocked behind the mobile paywall mechanic
Controls stick if you try to move an select things at the same time

PROS:
Makes you realize that god is dead and life is a lie
I literately cannot think of one and I'm trying to be generous to justify the amount of time I spent.

Honest 2/10 and it gets the 2 because of the dopamine pumping of any mobile game and because I got the most powerful sword and companion in a massively lucky roll very early in the game making it easier to slog through this dumpster fire disguised as a game.
Don't be like me. Don't play it.

Alright time for yet another review, YAY! This time for Alvastia Chronicles. This game, is of course another KT game, and yet I actually feel this is slightly more impressive storywise than most. And it is all due to one major contributing factor, the antagonists. Or rather I shall say the antagonists' minions. You heard that right. Since the main antagonist of the game Valhyt, is NON EXISTENT. He does not show up at all until the end of the game. His four minions Griever in particular all for the first two acts of the game all seem to be a constant but inconsistent thorn in your side. And I LOVE IT.

The only real drawback is that your first real fight against any of the tetrarchs happens SUPER LATE into the game. And its after a rather long section where THEY DO NOT SHOW UP AT ALL. It's very odd storytelling.

I will say this has one of the oddest FAS out of any KT game since sure you have the villians making amends (as per KT tradition) but the reason why they did what they did was SUPER cliche. It kind of sours quite a bit of the mood, what am I talking about? Play and find out.
