This game can't have a stable framerate to save its life. Goes from 24 to 135 to 4 in seconds. So I can't recommend this. It's a shame too, the game seems interesting. I'll look into their other games to see if the performance is better.
This game is a beautiful, classic style, point and click adventure. From the handmade sets to the engaging and thought provoking story, this is a must-play for adventure puzzler fans.
I've owned this game for a while since it was in episodic release, and I've restarted it several times with only partial completions. I've finally completed it thanks to the convenience of the Steam Deck. The pace of this game works well with a handheld platform.
If you are reading this wondering how the degraded rating for Steam Deck compatibility really affects this title, know that it really plays just fine. The on-screen keyboard is only used to name your savegames. I think it shoud have a Great On Deck "Approved" rating
what a creepy creative game.
The claymation and art style are both wonderful throughout the game, with some beautiful scenery and haunting figures. BUT I will not recommend this game to anyone. During Chapter 5 the puzzles got increasingly long and frustrating -- and I'm not sure but I think Chapter 5 has more puzzles than Chapters 1 through 4 combined. Then there is the ending which, for a very interesting game concept about a dreamscape, was very disturbing to play through.
There’s so much to say about the experience that this game gave me.
If you love surrealist science fiction, this game is right up your alley. The story and gameplay revolve around entering dreams and solving puzzles, so it reminds me quite a bit of the movie Inception, but the similarities pretty much end there. This game has its own unique twist on the “entering dreams” trope.
Point-and-click games are known for having difficult puzzles that you can only solve if you click on an obscure piece of the screen. This can be frustrating. However, in this game, not only puzzles are not too difficult, but also there are accessibility modifiers that you can turn on that will give you extra hints or highlight clickable objects. I appreciated these options a lot when I got stuck at certain parts.
The claymation animation style is just an absolute treat visually. Like Neverhood, Armikrog, and Harold Halibut, it gives the game such a visually distinct aesthetic that I know that a lot of passion and hard work from the developers was put into this game. I commend them for this.
The character and dialogue writing is some of the best I’ve experienced in media. Even though dialogue in this game is conveyed through simple text on screen, everything that is said feels very real and purposeful, like if these characters existed in real life, I would believe they are real people instead of NPCs. For example, when the main character is conversing with his significant other, they have conversations and responses that a real couple would have. It connected me to the characters in a way I didn’t think was possible in a simple point-and-click game with no voice acting. I’ve played plenty of AAA games with voice acting where the dialogue seems so forced and only existing for plot advancement. Not in this game.
Fair warning that there are some gorey scenes, but they are few and far between. The writing at times is also very heavy, so be prepared.
This game is also really buggy. The game crashed many times and I softlocked myself from progressing a few times, but nothing that reloading the auto save couldn’t fix.
Overall, phenomenal story, satisfying puzzles, and great visuals.
100% Achievement Completion Perspective:
There are a lot of hidden achievements that can only be obtained by doing something specific or picking certain dialogue. You can’t get all achievements on a single playthrough, but you can replay individual chapters easily, though some are longer than others. There is one that if you don’t get in your first playthrough, you’ll have to play through the entire game again. However, going after most achievements nets you some unique dialogue and fun story moments, so it was fun 100%ing this game regardless.
art is amazing - looking at the main characters hands in the menus is so good. story pretty linear, puzzles usually straightforward, sometimes a little tough; no hint system, but there are guides if you get stuck/are impatient. worth just playing through, beautiful.
I play games (sometimes) on an Apple computer. Well, after buying this game and all the chapters, then, finally starting to play it, I come back a few weeks later, and now it is only for Windows and won't start. I feel like I should get a refund for this. They abandoned an entire operating system, after first releasing the game on both platforms. I simply cannot recommend based on this pretty big issue.
Edit: Developer is very responsive and tried to fix my problem. Should be playable again for me pretty soon with the definitive version. Changing my review to a thumbs up for the support that you don't often see from game developers. Thanks for the quick response.
You have to play all chapters together to get the 'full game' (each is very short on their own) but if you insist on getting this game I strongly recommend you only buy ONE chapter first, to test out its performance and ensure you will find it playable. I bought all chapters together and regret it, the game is beautiful and I want to love it but it was an extremely frustrating experience, massive lag and fps drops, frequent crashes to desktop. Likely due to a combination of being made in flash and flash no longer being supported, plus other likely optimization problems.
the animation is so smoooth
It took me 2.5 hours to complete chapters 1 & 2. I avoid point and click games because I always find myself needing to watch a walkthrough every 5 minutes, but I didn't need a walkthrough to figure out the puzzles-- I found it straight forward and average-player friendly yet it challenged me to think a little.
The concept, artstyle, boredom, and cheap price pushed me to give it a try. The story and characters are more captivating than I thought they'd be. Perhaps I'll get the full game, but judging from other reviews, I assume the puzzles get harder. All the answers in 1 & 2 are obvious so long as you don't miss anything.
Cool point-and-click game with a very nice story, handmade aesthetics, aside from challenging puzzles and crashing
I recommend .
No words do this game justice. This was an experience that I will never forget. I want to live to see more art as beautiful as this
This game is fucking amazing. I hope the devs add more endings, because I notice there are several different options for dialogue in each scene. I really liked the chapter where they introduce Legion, it's fucking sick.
Pros:
Handmade Aesthetics: The game’s graphics are meticulously crafted using physical sculptures, resulting in a stunning and distinctive visual style.
Intriguing Story: Prepare to explore the surreal and morbid as you unravel the mysteries within this dreamy adventure.
Authentic Characters: Well-scripted dialogue and authentic characters add depth to the experience.
Challenging Puzzles: Devious puzzles await, designed to engage hardcore adventure gamers.
Cons:
Short Content: While rich in quality, the game’s length may leave you craving more.
In summary, The Dream Machine is an artistic marvel that balances humor, darkness, and logic. If you appreciate unconventional storytelling and handcrafted visuals, this adventure is a must-play.
Atmospheric and immersive game, beautifully crafted, and a pleasure to revisit for a second playthrough

Well, as a person from The Neverhood... era, every now and then I have a need in experiencing some clay, fingerprints, close-ups etc.
Good game, deep
I guess... now I want to become a father
Having played Chapter 1 back when it was released, I revisited the game in its entirety with my partner. We were completely engrossed from start to finish. The level of depth and authenticity that the writing achieves within this dark fantasy/magical realist world is nothing short of gorgeous.
The game design is a classic point-and-click style with all of its pros and cons. Creative solutions reward you for thinking immersively in the world's design, although they sometimes misfire and force you to look up a walkthrough to continue. Overall, the puzzle design remains very fun and rewarding.
However, the game shines in its art design, writing, and worldbuilding. It dares to be dark and eerie but also showcases some moments of true beauty and humor. With the eerie ambient/droney score playing, the game becomes melancholic and meditative, where the absence of voice-acting actually enhances the experience, immersing you into this cardboard and clay world.
The final story beats are beautiful and poignant. The personal story that intersperses with the action plot of fighting the machine subtly becomes more important and is interwoven beautifully.
All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to everyone.
This game tells a story that will stay with you forever. The characters and their stories are well written, the art is really unique and cool, the puzzles can drive you mad, but in a fun way (big thanks for the people who elaborate guides), and every moment playing it is enjoyable. May we all drift to the void in peace!
How have I missed this game until now? It's not just the art (stop motion) style that's interesting, it's the narrative, world-building, and puzzles. Granted, a few puzzles are frustratingly obtuse, but generally I couldn't put the game down until I finished it. Each level is unique and compelling in its own way. You also get a lot of game for the price - it's much longer than you think. In the end it's the quality, not quantity that gripped me, especially if you like a psychological analysis of a game. I never knew what direction it was going to go in next.
Most importantly, it does not pull its punches. There are a lot of scenes that no other game I've seen would have the stomach to show, and pushes the medium to the edge; but never for the sake of controversy, it's always in pursuit of its artistic goals. As an artist, I appreciated this game in more than one way.
It's ok, if you like having to watch YouTube videos or read walk-throughs on how to get through it. The majority of puzzles in this game are not inherently easy to understand. Some are straight forward. Psychedelic, tripped out game. The ending was most disappointing. I'd previously played the game through right up to prior their release of the final chapter at 14.7 Hours, some puzzles were harder previously(at least I thought so). They removed the parasol requirement for the Bloody Mary (which made no sense, but at the same time did!). Just revisiting the game now (2024) to completion taking in 11.8 Hours.
Challenging.
Visuals are impressive, being all clay/cardboard/pipe cleaners(;D)
Rewarding (unlikely)
Runs on Flash and crashes do occur.
I can now retire this game to my completed list, never to return to it.
I recommend it even if I didn't completely enjoy it. It's still better than watching reruns of Friends.
Love this one.
Great game but fps frequently drops extremely low - significantly hindering my game experience. It's a known issue but I have been unable to fix it so far. It hasn't prevented me from solving any puzzles in chapter 1 though.
Fantastic game
I played this game 7 years ago and I still think about it all the time. Most recently I went to the art exhibit Meow Wolf which seems like a real world version of this game.
Anyways, I’ll have to do another playthrough now that it’s been long enough.
