A story of pain, grief, and the love that forms the basis of it all. There are three narratives to this game - the Knight, the Girl, and the Wanderer. The Knight 'steals' pain from the world, battling dark energies that rarely leave one unscathed. The Girl traverses an unfamiliar house, subconsciously seeking an answer she is scared to ask. The Wanderer's story is more fleshed-out, filled with past grief, guilt, and determination. All three archetypes are intricately connected to tell a tale too harrowing for a young child. Maybe all the adults feel the same way, too. We were all once but a child, and children we remain within for most of our lives.
I think many of us will have encountered or personally experienced the three archetypes present in this game. The Knight - doing what we think is best to carry us on through grief, trudging through life performing self-sacrificing acts if only to seek salvation; The Girl - confused and lost, feeling helpless in the face of uncertainty and loss of hope, loss of love; The Wanderer - picking ourselves up time and again through grief and pain, determined to love and be loved regardless of how much suffering we've gone through.
No one can be faulted for their pain and tragedy. Each process their own differently, the way they themselves feel most comfortable to do. This applies to life and suffering as a whole too, imo. Life cannot be faulted for the suffering we experience. It is its own thing and we just so happen to be in a certain state of awareness surrounded by certain circumstances which contributes to a certain experience.
Sometimes when terrible things happen, it might seem easier to let that consume you as a whole because that's the closest semblance of whatever love we had for what we lost. And for many, many people, losing who and what we love can be overwhelming. Grief is just love that does not know where else to go, after all. But moving on doesn't mean losing this love. Sometimes it just means transmuting it and laying the past to rest.
FYI I did cry a little. 10/10.
Amazing story game, just play it
Inmost is absolutely beautiful in all aspects, and controls very well as a game. However, it is pure 100% melancholy, so I recommend you play it when you're in a good space to experience something great that'll bring down the mood.
If you're like me and enjoy horror adventure type games then this is for you - if you like story-rich and metahphoric narratives then this is also for you. Inmost is not necessarily the most gameplay intensive or skill-based game, but the atmospherics, the music, the story are all top notch. Also pixelart?? Sign me up
definitely one of the metroidvanias of all time. story is very abstract and hard to follow which isn't my cup of tea. the fancy pixel graphics are very colorful and you can tell they put a lot of the budget in the soundtrack, which is lush and super dramatic. plays well, although i found the constant character switches to be disruptive.
i'd say it's worth a playthrough, especially if you wanna justify the hundreds of dollars you blew on an iCue setup, like i did! enjoy the pretty lights. :')
Absolutely gorgeous game with a cool art style and one of the best core ideas I've ever seen in my life. If you are going through a hard time, then try completing it.
Very enjoyable 2D, story-driven platformer. I'm not entirely sure why I liked it so much, but I did. The ending, I may not have agreed with entirely but it's overall message was unifying and relatively positive. Love and pain are feelings most people can relate to and it's difficult at times to make sense of it all. The mechanics in this game were fairly simple and easy to navigate; you play as 3 different characters with different capabilities (for example, while one character hops and can only crawl on top of items to get from one place to another, a different character is able to jump while the third can utilize a slingshot to get around vertically or horizontally). This game is pretty story-heavy, especially at the end so if you dislike such things or tend to Ctrl-Skip you may want to be prepared for that.
Cute little (dark) game, great art.
Totally recommend
Pretty good
A beautiful and unexpectedly emotional story. Didn't expect to see the potrayal of a pertinent human feeling in such a captivating way. Would recommend to get on sale.
blown away by the story. went in blind with no expectations. what a beautiful game!
This game is a very interesting way to design a Psychological Horror. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what's real and what's a figment of the character's imagination until the end, but by that point, you get to fit all the pieces together. A very emotionally compelling story indeed.
From a gameplay perspective, I like how the world is designed like a Metrovania interweaving between different paths by unlocking it using the tools and items you find along the way. It also comes with hidden collectibles that are optional but can be turned in for more story context from the Storyteller. If you manage to find most of them before ending the game though, it feels like a spoiler unless you haven't been able to decipher the events of the plot yet.
The animation is extremely expressive. The controls are a bit clunky but if you die, it doesn't set you back very far at all, allowing you to constantly progress the story.
Very good art, fascinating story, really had me captivated for 3 and a half hours.
Jogo de triste, lindo e profundo.
Absolute cinema. Uma história de amor mal interpretada. Por quem? Compre e descubra...
There are a lot of reviews that criticize the vague story and claim that instead of being able to experience the narrative they were just confused the whole time.
Do not let these reviews stop you from buying this masterpiece, please. I understood the story, and this game hit me harder than any game since "That Dragon, Cancer". Don't assume you won't understand, because this is a game worth understanding.
(I'm not saying the story is straight forward, nor am I blaming people who didn't get it, I'm merely saying the chance that you do get it is worth it.)
Did not expect it to be the emotional rollercoaster it was.
Wow.
a very sad and happy game
This was beautiful and incredibly sad. Loved this one.
This is one of those games that people may tell you is a deep, emotional, slowburn. Don't believe them. You'll mostly be confused and kind of annoyed the game keeps its most interesting ideas razor-thin in small, barely interactive segments.
Inmost is a mild, unchallenging mini-Metroidvania drenched in mopey vibes. Very short, about 3 hours with as little as 2.5 hours of actual gameplay. That's about it. No recommended.
Highlights:
- Great sound work and musical score
- Strong sense of art direction and mood
Issues:
- Confusing, melodramatic plot with fragmented gameplay, constantly switching protagonists
- Movement is slow and plodding, platforming either bland or obnoxious
- Easy to not know what to do next, can get obtuse and directionless
- The only mechanically cool character (the knight) is given simple, basic levels. A potential cool boss fight you should be playing is locked to a cutscene! Why is the player not given this cool fight? Why am I watching it?!
This is an amazing game, that is quite difficult to categorize. If you enjoy good storytelling, this is definitely the game for you.
The music, aesthetics and voice acting are of pristine quality, and the overall feel of the game left me absolutely stunned.
3/10. had potential, ending was 'ok' and art is cool but game has no substance. playing as the old man instead of the knight for 80% of the game was awful and story was convoluted for no reason.
MASTERPIECE
Beautiful story telling.
The game earns the feels.
Cool game but for me the story was kind of vaguely explained, leading me to not quite get what actually happened. Covers some really dark topics and a generally dark story, through indirect storytelling, using fantasy elements. A decent journey of 3-4 hours.
The exploring and puzzles are pretty clever, and relatively straight forward. However, it is almost entirely uncorrelated to the actual plot, you're mostly just kinda fucking around in this fantasy world, then you're suddenly reminded that there's actually a story, you're supposed to follow. The post-game completion had me sort of look back at different things I did in the game, and just wondering "and why did I have to do that?" There's just a very clear divide between the storytelling and the gameplay, which often feel like they're in two seperate worlds and share little in common.
For me the storytelling was hard to understand due to how it's executed, but at the end it helped clear up most but I still had to look online to find out what I missed. It's so vaguely explained and from looking through other reviews, I wasn't the only one who genuinely went through the game not quite knowing what was actually going on. Naturally since the story is quite dark and important I don't want to spoil anything, but I can say for example that I didn't entirely know how many characters there were, and how correlated they were. In fact, there was a character I mixed in with another, not knowing they were two seperate people! So don't blame yourself if you don't quite get what's going on, you're not alone!
Now the graphics are easily the best element. This game is suuuuper pretty, so pretty I pretty much forgave it for it's odd style of storytelling, and playthrough of a world I didn't even understand how worked. It's definitely one of the better looking pixel-graphics games I've played in recent times, alongside Celeste (which I'd say this is prettier than) and Octopath (which I think is prettier than this though)
6.5-7/10 would kinda recommend
I wanted to like this game--the description and promised mood was right up my alley, the pixel animations are dripping with love, it played well on the Deck--but, for me, it wasn't a fun game to play. I DNF'd it and I almost never do that with a short game (though I felt this was longer than a "long evening" length game.)
I got stuck two hours in on a late-game scene with an aggressive tar critter, some lampposts, and insta-death. I know I could post in the Discussions or look up a video guide (though YouTube won't run on my deck currently) but I realized...no. I'm not having fun. I don't want to spend any more time on it. Doesn't help that two of the three characters you play as are quite slow and not maneuverable. I liked the way the Knight played and probably would have enjoyed a completely different game (and genre--like a Metroidvania, or straight 2D platformer basically) based around his movements...but yeah. The majority of the time, you're slow, you're defenseless, and the story was too oblique for me. And I'm a fan of, like, RUSTY LAKE games and other thoughtfully-paced spooky games, so that's saying something, I think.
Inyes
This game hits very very hard at the end. This is mainly a puzzle game and it did it very well. The pixel style is very well done. Highly recommend
wow. just wow. this game wrecked me over and over again. and it was beautiful every time.
my only complaint is the end. i think the ending in itself is great but i wish that instead of dumping all of the lore on us at once it sprinkled it throughout the story better. i think with the little girl's gameplay it was starting to paint the picture but not entirely. at least that was my experience, maybe i missed things though. i also wish the last chapter was interactive. i sat through a 10 minute video and then the game ends. while i loved the story, the art, and even most of the mechanics, i do wish that it didn't feel like such a rushed ending.
that being said, i still believe this game is 10/10. while i think there can be improvements, i think that its current state is fantastic. i cant recommend this game enough, i am just completely taken aback by how beautifully crafted it is in all aspects.
I actually really like this game. It took me a bit at first to understand what was going on and what I was doing. I went into the game blindly. I had purchased it because I really loved the graphics for it. It was a great puzzle game with a very interesting story.
As someone who has dealt with grief, this game was something I very much appreciated. It tells a story of heart ache, loss, and acceptance which I think we all need to experience.
The music is beautiful, the art style is clear, and the gameplay portrays its message wonderfully. I truly recommend this game even just to play it once. It is a journey that we will all have to travel once, so it's best to not do it alone.
You are not alone <3
awkward
The most tedious game I've ever played, with characters purposefully walking through sand to pad the games run time out. If characters walked and interacted with items in the environment normally, the game would probably last one hour. The story is awful and convoluted too. 2/10. Save your money.
BEAUTIFUL STUNNING AMAZING PERFECT wish the characters could move faster tho
This game is just wonderful. The story and game play is great. Highly recommend.
This game is a mixed bag for me. You play three people in various passages. A riddle based castle, a knight slashing through enemies, and a little girl in a house. The first two I liked, the girl passages are slow and involve a lot of walking in the same spots and felt repetitive from gameplay perspective. Biggest downside for me was the story, I lost interest to follow quickly. Dark emotions and sense of loss put in a game. But I really liked the riddles and the change between fighting and evasion depending on the characters. Most of all I liked the presentation, great pixel art and atmospheric music.
Pain
This is one of those games where I wish I could give it a mixed rating. The story is alright, but it struggles in delivering it in the context of the video game. There are many points which serve as very long cut scenes, even when I think there could've been a component of game play added for interactivity.
There is basically no loss component to this game, where you will very easily be reset to nearby checkpoints if you somehow die. Most of the puzzles are so straight forward, they serve only to delay your completion of the game.
You bounce around between stories in this game, which I think is an interesting concept; however, one of these story lines is rather monotonous and has you slowly walking around a house, and dragging objects just to climb on them.
this game....woah.... starts off like a platformer, but the ending...the story is beyond the plot of some of the most complex dark movies. i have no clue how they came up with this. My only complaint is the game play is too slow (movements are dragged out) and they could make the story a little more clear cause i had to look some things up to clarify. wow, def an experience
best advice is to not try to understand the story as it gets crazy 10/10
loved it
Truly a gem. This game has taken "describing emotions" to another level. Loved the game
great atmospheric game
Very well done. The presentation, dark story telling through actions without words. I've been very impressed.
For those wondering, it seems like there is almost no combat. Each room is almost like a small puzzle. The punishment for death is light, you simply restart the room. No anti-fun running back and doing the same section of the map over and over.
Very short but nice game, most of the plot is up to you to interpret and try to piece together as you get more information but it’s a really nice feeling once you do.
I picked the game for under 5 euro on a sale but would say it’s well worth the full price despite being short.
I hate this game.
The art is ok. Resembles old LCD 4-color screens.
The rythm of levels is enjoyable, the problem is that he gameplay is dull, at times demanding pixel-perfectness. The mechanics are inconsistent, sometimes you really can't be sure what to do until you realize you gotta do something you haven't done until that specific point. Sometimes that 'that' will even be used once, then forgotten. Plus, the really short, but mildly infuriating death animation you must see everytime you mess up by a pixel.
Just not fun.
I'd only recommend this game, because it is an experience to play. The only reason I didn't give up on the second it bored me, was unraveling the story, which is the strongest side of this game.
Pay a lot of attention, the story isn't clear from start, but ain't difficult to understand the subtexts. You empathize with the characters, conect points in the interwaeaving plots, and watch everything fit in its place, right before everything collapses.
This is one of the few games that had genuinely made me cry.
You should play it just once, so you don't spoil the experience.
The story in this one is amazing! I am not going to spoil anything but it goes deeper than you may think. The game play itself is pretty simple, but the major task is in unraveling the puzzle of the story itself. It will grip your heart! I would definitely recommend this one on sale, if you're looking to enjoy an interactive movie. 8/10
I'm gonna be real here; this game fucked me up inside. Without spoiling things, you do go through three separate narratives, all with different stories. The game is far and again worth the money for the story it tells.
