Sometimes, it's the one place where you ought to feel safe.
Like your house.
Freelance designer Yuuki Kae has just moved into a new apartment. On her move-in day, she decides to introduce herself to her new next-door neighbor... but something isn't quite right.
Static over the intercom... A violently rattling doorknob... And a ghostly pale hand reaching out through the crack in the door...
They said the apartment next to hers wasn’t for rent. It was supposed to be empty.
Through a series of strange events, Kae meets Hisamatsu Daigo, a fellow tenant who lives above her on the 3rd floor. Together, they must hunt for clues to solve the mystery…

Neighbor is an updated remake of a classic Japanese horror visual novel, with all-new artwork and voice acting, as well as a brand new soundtrack by famed composer Ryu Takami.
Players take the role of protagonist Yuuki Kae as she investigates the mysterious and terrifying events happening in her new apartment building.
You'll experience the story through an immersive blending of text, visuals and audio, with a reserved presentation designed to lull the player into a false sense of security and amplify the chilling atmosphere.
Neighbor is a kinetic novel with no player choices and a single ending, streamlining the story and enhancing player engagement.
We hope you'll enjoy this spine-tingling adventure, fully voiced in Japanese and localized to English for the first time!

I had fun reading/listening to this Horror Visual Novel.
The atmosphere building is in a good pace, not too slow nor fast.
I got jumpscare from sudden sound effects and VAs.
It was short... but it really fun.
This game is a slow burner, and builds up the tension brilliantly, starting with just a small incident, then the game devs turn the screw a little and add another strange incident, then another. You play as someone who has just moved into a new flat, and according to Japanese tradition, you take a small gift and introduce yourself to your neighbours. One of your neighbours is a student who decides to help you with your search for an explanation of what is happening. This student also provides some comic relief during the search.
The voice-over is in Japanese, and does contribute to the build up of suspense, even if we do not understand what is being said. The art style is minimalistic and limited to just a few colours and lines, and suits the story as it is told. Not being familiar with Japanese social customs, I found that while they were necessary for developing the mystery they were at first a bit off-putting, but its well worth persevering with them as it explains so well how the various characters react in the circumstances they find themselves in and the politeness that Japanese society can impose even in unusual circumstances.
There are plenty of save slots, though I am not sure if I would play this again as this is more like a novel than an actual game and once the mystery is solved there is no apparent room for an alternative ending. I enjoyed it and while I found the Japanese voices a bit distracting to begin with, they certainly add to the atmosphere of terror that surrounds the protagonist. This is one of those games best played with headphones in a darkened room on a cold stormy night to maximise the terror, pleasure or discomfort you may feel. Not everyone's taste, but a nice contrast to the hard action and bright lights of most games.
Very spooky and immersive. Experience it at night and with headphones.
Great little visual novel horror story.
It's well written, good audio design, a well told story and some chilling scenes. It's completely passive, there's no interaction, it's in the purest sense a visual novel. Takes about 3 hours to ride through the main game and epilogue.
What I would recommend you avoid is the DLC. Unlike the main game there is a system of choice to it, and it ramps the gore/direct horrific imagery moreso. But it's abysmally short (15 minutes), has nothing to do with the main game, and isn't really entertaining or satisfying at all. Seems like a cheap money-grab in every sense of the word.
But recommend the main game wholeheartedly.
Extremely underrated horror Visual Novel.
A simple mystery tale without many surprises but enjoyable to read nonetheless. The text is nicely written, building tension when it's due and the characters interactions have a good flow to them. Its well paced, never boring or wasting any time to move forward.
The presentation follow the purest tradition of sound novel : emphasis on the text by having it occupies the entire screen (NVL style), emphasis on the sound atmosphere and sound effects, minimalist illustrations (with occasional beautiful b/w CG). It could have been done better in the sound effects department but all in all, the presentation serves its goal right : carrying its story by accompanying it with an eerie atmosphere.
Neighbor is an interesting horror/mystery Visual Novel. Primarily text based, with a limited number of backgrounds and occasional artwork, in monochrome.
This is not a particularly frightening experience to read, while there are some creepy parts, solving the mystery of why supernatural things are happening is at the forefront. I’m not sure what the writers had in mind in terms of the tone- you spend almost the entire game with other characters, which is far less frightening than stories where you’re in over your head and all alone. But it does allow for some nice character development.
The voice acting is realistic and carries emotion, without being over the top. The story is purely kinetic, with no choices, but there are occasional extra newspaper clippings and things you can read by clicking on highlighted words. Don’t expect massive shocking developments, or a surprise ending, it’s just not that kind of game. Enjoy unraveling the mystery and the interesting atmosphere and you’ll be all set.
This is a 3-5 hour experience that can be finished on a rainy day, or a night alone, if you really want to set the mood.
Not choices, so the story plays out as written but it's a solid spooky little tale. Worth a read!
A rather short but interesting Horror story. With 2 likeable leads and a nice conclusion.
In terms of how scary this game is. I'd say it's creepy and unnerving but not too scary. No jump scares (at least I don't see them as jump scares, imo) and this game knows how to create a good tension. The artwork is very nice, I enjoyed it.
My biggest con, i'd say that it was a bit too short. I finished the game in almost 2 and a half hours and that includes it's DLC. But even then it was very enjoyable.
Definately try it out.
Immersive and well-characterised tale, if a little linear and slightly excessive in length.
The punchy, suspenseful Lingering Memories side-story, unlockable once you complete the main feature, is the true gem here.
A pretty good horror VN.
The English was pretty much flawless and very well translated, and the voice actors were awesome. This, combined with the fitting soundtrack, made the VN a pleasant experience.
I don't scare very easily at all, but there were one or two moments where things got a bit eerie. Despite not being terrified while sitting on the edge of my seat, the presentation was enough to keep me engaged and interested.
Recommend picking it up on sale as I did, as I don't think it's worth the money for the price it is currently at due to the short length and minimalistic content.
But it is worth a read for sure.
Pros: Creepy atmosphere. Good music. Excellent voice acting. Great translation. Immersive environment. Some genuinely spooky moments. Likable characters.
Cons: No choices. One ending. It's kinda short if you advance text and interrupt the voice acting (I slowed down for spooky scenes). Some making light of the sexual harassment of men.
Overall I recommend. I got it on sale. I'm on the fence on whether it's worth a full $15 for its length, but it's definitely one of the best horror VNs I've read.
Kind of a short VN but it was a nice read. I like psychological horror more than supernatural horror but it was still enjoyable.
Classic J-Horror, could easily have been a Japanese horror movie. Main game does not include any choices or interaction, you just click through the story. If that's what you're looking for, then you should check it out.
Neighbor it's an outstanding horror VN that will play with your expectations every given moment. Always surprising you with creepy and top grossing sound designs that enhance the experinece quite well, and you will always find yourself questioning if the plot will go for somthing supernatural or an true story. But I can hoesty say that it's quite a ride and there are not many good good horror that really flips the table like Neighbor do. So if you are a sucker for horror, go for it :D
Good horror VN.
Not sure if it worth the price, but I'm sure it's worth to be played. So, if this game on sale, or you have some spare money, I gladly recomend it.
Neighbor is stylish, spooky, and very fun! It runs a bit on the short side, but I had more fun spending two hours playing Neighbor than I would have had watching a movie.
A great intriguing ghost and mystery story about a tragic murder and it's consequences for some of the tenants in a haunted apartment building. I really enjoyed this and it is actually my 1st visual novel. Recommended highly for those who really like a good ghost story. A story that reads more like a mystery than a real horror story, with the two main characters acting as detectives trying to uncover the tragic tale, of what happened in one of the apartment units nearest to them.
Simple but compelling horror story. Bit on the shorter side, but you can pass a few evenings reading this. My only gripe about the experience is that the story features very stereotypical okama characters getting handsy with a character that is clearly uncomfortable with the situation.
Kudos to the localization team for the really well done translation and editing, reading this VN was very enjoyable.
Although not as frightening as I expected going in, I was very pleased with the story and the characters within it. The voice acting is superb and the illustrations & soundtrack bring an excellent atmosphere to the storytelling. Whereas the plot is very predictable at times, Neighbor is written in such a way as to still retain entertainment value and curiosity despite that.
