Good game, plays with the limited time system very well. It is not hard to clear the game, but it is very hard to see everything/kill the superbosses within the time limit.
--- Some things related to postgame (Overtime) are not well explained - You can get locked out of postgame dungeons based on your pre postgame interactions.
--- Crafting system is pretty good overall, a few flaws here and there but nothing major.
--- Exploration is fun, but combat is boring and incredibly monotonous. Almost no moving enemies pose a threat, and no hard enemy is really required for clearing.

Overall, a pretty fun experience for what it is.

TLDR: A great entry point to the Atelier series. Good crafting mechanics and time management lead to a fun, but grindy, adventure.

          PROS:

          ✅Fun writing
          ✅Music
          ✅Addicting micromanagement with synthesis/days

          CONS:

          ➖Fixed camera
➖Most endings are a big grind
➖Inventory sorting resets every time you exit inventory
          ➖Slight UI entry issues (controller)

          Content (Game world/Narrative/Length) – [6/10]

Game World: Atelier Rorona ~The Alchemist of Arland~ DX (Rorona) takes place in a charming fantasy-esque world full of monsters, magic, and lots of alchemy. Rorona consists of two types of world areas - the world map and zone map. The world map consists of choosing an area to adventure to, you have the city of Arland itself and multiple different zones to explore, gather, and do combat in.
The zones themselves are generally pretty simple, each containing between 1-4 exits to another zone. You’ll spend most of your time either fast traveling around the city, or exploring various monster-filled ruins to get materials for your alchemical needs.
Overall, I found the game world to be simple and cheery. Kind of like a simplified version of Slime Rancher, from a vibe perspective.

Narrative: The narrative immediately kicks off with you, playing as Roronalina (Rorona for short) being told that the alchemy store you apprentice at is being closed by order of the king. Your master doesn’t seem to care, so it's up to you to save the shop by completing 3 years worth of assignments to prove your worth and support to the kingdom.
I didn’t find the plot to be a strong point in Rorona. The vast majority of the cutscenes you view do not relate to the main story. Even the “Villain” of the game is never even brought up again after act 10! I felt the ending was good, but this is truly a game where the journey is more important than the destination.

Length: A fairly long time. There are 12 assignments in total, if you rush through each assignment, you could probably finish each one in ~30ish minutes. For me, I took about an average of ~2 hours of each assignment because I was grinding materials, levels, synths, and town reputation points. Overall, I’d expect this game to take between 20-30 hours.

          Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – [7/10]

Mechanics: Rorona has many mechanics, but I’m going to focus on the core gameplay loop of what you’ll be doing the majority of the time, as this is my first Atelier game, everything was new to me so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Especially with the time limit restrictions, which I have heard can cause some friction amongst players.
At its core, you’ll be given a task, and around 90 days to complete it. Each action you take consumes days, sometimes if you travel to a far-away area, you’ll consume 4 days just to get there, then an additional couple days just traveling between each sub area inside that zone. Due to your limited bag space per expedition, you can normally clear about 3-4 screens of enemies/gathering before you're full and then return to the workshop. This entire process takes about 10-15 days each time you go out. It also takes a portion of days to synthesize alchemical creations, some of which cost your main character MP. You must rest to refill your MP, which of course takes days, or else you’ll fail synths. I mean it when I say any significant action takes your precious days.
Each zone also has combat. The combat is generally very easy (more in difficulty below), but there isn’t a lot of depth to combat. Normally you will be auto-attacking for 95% of the time while only using MP abilities for boss battles. Speaking of MP abilities, I hated how Rorona is forced to use MP in alchemy AND combat, leaving you to essentially never use her MP skills in combat unless you were planning to rest immediately. There are some nice crafting you can do with equipment - by combining combat-oriented traits on items, you can essentially snowball powerful traits by using crafted items as materials in your next craft, or by using 2 materials, you can focus on 1 mat having tons of attack while the other has HP with the end result combining those into a single equipable item.
Overall, I did not find the time restriction to be too oppressive, though the last 2 assignments can get close with travel times. Oftentimes I was able to finish the main requirement within 10-15 days, then spend the remainder of the days grinding for ingredients, levels, and completing requests to increase town reputation. I quite enjoyed the gameplay loop, and Rorona does a great job at introducing new elements each assignment.

Difficulty: I found the difficulty ranges from child-like easy to ridiculously difficult. The majority of the game is very easy and requires very little research or guides to complete. The game does a great job at explaining where you get things, provided you’ve at least explored the sub area once. Even the combat is crazy easy, often defeating monsters in 1-2 hits. If you want to turn Rorona into a god of destruction, buy the voucher ring in assignment 1!
The difficulty for me came from the optional area bosses that appear as requests. They start off easy enough with the Slime King and the Wolf boss, but the later area bosses just decimated me.

          Graphics (Quality/Performance) – [7/10]

Quality: Good enough. Rorona is a JRPG with heavy anime influences, and the graphical style represents this. Despite Rorona being a very old game and the DX version being a remake, I found the graphics to be good.

Performance: No issues with performance, but I did notice some possible entry issues with the controller. There were times when the input didn’t register and I’d have to hit buttons multiple times. I know it's not my controller, cause I play Elden Ring on this thing and it's fine.
          i9-13900KF | RTX 4090 | 64GB RAM | 1440p @ 240hz | installed on SSD

          Audio (Sound Effects/Music) – [7/10]

Sound Effects: Good basic sound effects. There is voice acting, but not all lines are voice acted. I found the voice acting to also be good, but despite the small cast of characters, I noticed the same voice actor obviously playing 2 characters.

Music: Very good. That workshop song is forever stuck in my head. You have the option to change the workshop music to a huge library of music from various Atelier games. Outside the workshop, I found the area music to be lighthearted, whimsical, and appropriate for their areas.

          Replay Factor (Longevity) – [4/10]

Rorona has a ton of grinding for the reputation endings, as well as a NG+ to scoop up missed achievements. Honestly, the grinding could be cut in half as it just feels too excessive.
So while the NG+, and potential for missed endings/achievements are there, the gameplay loop will remain the same, hindering the replay value.

          Final Verdict – [7/10]

As my first Atelier game, I thoroughly enjoyed Rorona. I wanted to start with an older title, because I felt that the quality of life of the newer Atelier games would make me not want to experience the originals. I’m glad that I went with Rorona first, as I felt it's a fun game and not too stressful with many of the mechanics.
As I continue to play through the series, I’ll be looking closely at what I consider to be Rorona’s weakest points - the story, combat mechanics, and UI. Still, I recommend this game due to its good crafting and time management system implementation.

Works great on deck, absolutely 0 issues, no crashes or anything. Plays like good old atelier, but they kinda made it a tad easier, I know the later games have the time limit removed, but for the arland series it's a staple; hardest being totori of the remakes. What totori shows now, is what rorona used to be like. So it's a fair bit easier now, comfy alchemy fun.

Illya isekai'd to Arland!? (Rorona has the same voice actor as Illya!)
          It's such a cozy slice-of-life game!
The gameplay and Alchemy was fun!
You will be completing assignments before the deadline to ensure your Atelier is not closed down.
The time limit is not too hard as long as you know what you are doing.
You will encounter many great characters throughout your adventure.
There are so many cute and funny moments with Rorona!

I played the ryza games before so i dont know how much fun i would have, hadnt i played them before rorona.
Regardless, considering i still had a lot of fun with this game after playing an atelier game that came out like 12 years after, it certainly speaks a lot for trying out this game.

I really enjoy this game, but it isn't a good port. After a while the way it hangs every time you gather something, go into the menu, or craft gets very jarring. The price is also very high for such an old game, definitely wait for a sale.

Steam Deck: All ran well, menus and load times were just a bit laggy when I limited the GPU and CPU. Even FMVs worked.

A wonderful, lighthearted tale of a ditzy girl trying her best, the usual Atelier formula. I do think the game excuses too much sexual harassment though.

Combat is incredibly boring, though, besides the superbosses. Beating the superbosses was fun and rewarding.

Time limit is pretty strict at times if you don't know what you're doing.

I have not yet played the post game, as from what I understand it was made after Totori and Meruru were released, so for personal preference I have not played through overtime.

Great start to the Arland subseries.

I don't care much for the creeper fanservice humor you occasionally run into in the game. The story in general is pretty poor, but the crafting + gathering is fun. I started with Rorona as a challenge because people would say that the Arland Arc (first 3 games) aren't very user friendly for newcomers. I'd say that critique is probably accurate, especially with how the time limit is utilized, but i'm stubborn, i like to grind, and i like that weeb shit. Plus, it's actually not that hard to get things done well before the time limits are up. Dunno if i recommend this game just because it definitely isn't for everyone
