I really wanted to like this game but unfortunately i never got the chance to play it as the game kept on crashing. I bought this game on my steam deck and launched it. The game got to the main menu screen and everything there looked great and sounded great as well and i couldn't wait to start playing Dark Places but as soon as i clicked on new game, the game would start loading and get to the half way point and then just freeze midway as the sound became very choppy and full of static then i got the black screen. I tried 4 times to see if i could get the game to run and each time i kept on getting the black screen after the game loaded half way. I eventually uninstalled and asked for a refund. For this reason i am not giving the game a thumbs up. I really would like to play this game so if anyone knows how i can get the game to actually run on the steam deck and stop crashing after loading half way then please let me know so that i can repurchase the game and get to actually play it, and i will change my review once i've experienced the actual game play.
This thing is terrible. I have a huge soft spot for FPS Creator horror games, but this is just very annoying and brain-rotting. There's still some charm here, but it's not worth it. I couldn't get past the first puzzle because it's so nonsensical yet punishing.
Yes baby
- Some good sound effects
- Creepy monster design
- Guns look and feel nice
- Has a charming grungy aesthetic
Bogus
- Level design is just complete nonsense. Feels like a bunch of asset corridors thrown together
- No build-up, and that goes for everything. Tension, story, scares, game mechanics, atmosphere, etc
- Music is so repetitive and makes your brain pulse after a while
- Horrible puzzles that make no sense and don't inform the player correctly
- I encountered a bug where I got stuck in place and couldn't move or die
- Not scary
- Story seems like a complete afterthought
- Game just throws you into madness with no explanation. That can work for some games, but here, it just feels lazy
