Siberian Dawn is now updated to version 6.0 adding a lot of new content to the game

- Crisis mode is the final mode to be added to Siberian Dawn and gives you a way to play the game through the choice of a series of Crisis Points where a set of tasks will affect your progress in hunter down the Leader of the hostile forces trying to bring a Crisis to our Union
- 2 Crisis have been added, with 1 for the base game and 1 for Chapter 1 (requires Mission Pack 1 and 2)
- Investigator Union card to help you with the Crisis

5.0 Update

- A set of Missions comparable to the Missions in the Mission Packs, set before the Siberian Dawn story
- Skirmish mode with the new content of the Base game, DLC will then add extra content to this mode
- Ark section that contains various unlocks and uncovers the secrets of Siberian Dawn


This game is a strategic card based wargame with deckbuilding elements and the detailed tutorials will take you through how to play the game. As it was built to be a game that offered a lot of strategic options during a mission it is not a simple deckbuilder but is a game that requires thought and a bit of time to learn its mechanics.


Overview


Siberian Dawn is an original, solo, digital card game that combines the core soul of a deck builder with the tactical power of a war game and the strategic challenge of crisis management.

You are an Overseer in the Union, one of the tactical controllers who has to deal with the increasing dangers facing the Union through Objective based Missions. Recruit and deploy Units, enlist the help of the Guilds, and build your Bond with those in the shadows, whilst trying to control the conflict unfolding before you.

The base game contains a detailed series of 4 interactive tutorials, that will take you through how to play the game, and then you can play the 4 Training Mission that are specially designed to be your first proper test of playing a mission.

After you have been through the training you can then tackle the V Missions, which are 3 full missions that tell a contained story and give you the full challenge of Siberian Dawn, with the full Union and Guild cards available to you.

The base game also contains Skirmish mode, a more combat orientated mission where you have to kill X Rank worth of enemy in 30 Rounds. There are 2 Skirmish missions available in the base game, and a Skirmish 0 which takes all the content owned and mixes in all together in an epic challenge.

Beyond the base game are the Mission Packs available as DLC, which each one adding 3 new full Missions of the Siberian Dawn story and 1 Skirmish mission unique to that DLC. All the content in the DLC packs will also be added to Skirmish 0 to make that even more crazy.


The World


In Siberian Dawn you play the part of an Overseer in the Union, an industrial state covering what we know as Europe. Overseers are the tactical experts of the Union and responsible for quickly dealing with troubles as they arise using a limited resource pool, controlled squad level force, and possible support from the Guilds. Siberian Dawn has a heavy character driven setting, in a gritty near future military world that mixes in medieval and supernatural horror elements to the theme.

The game starts as hostility has been growing in Industrial Habit IH-54 of the Eastern Zones for the last few weeks. Outcasts are rumoured to have been stirring up this dissent and it is believed they are connected to a cult called the Dawn, Overseers have been assigned to deal with this unrest and you are one of them. Each Mission will give the Overseer a series of Objectives to complete which have variety and offer the Overseer different challenges during the Mission. Missions will be playable individually but also form a narrative story as the Overseer uncovers the truth of the Dawn and how deep secrets go within the Union and Guilds.


Mission Example


An example Training mission in the base game is First Run, which is aimed to give you a taste of Siberian Dawn and the basics of a Mission. The Objectives in this Mission will take you through the steps towards the final Objective to kill the 4 VBots, the Missions in Mission Pack 1 and those to follow will contain multiple Objectives offering a longer more challenging game. First Run also contains 2 Units, the Grunt and the Scribe. The Grunt is your basic Union military Unit that will be used to attack the VBots, and the Scribe is a Guild support Unit who will help you gain Glory. Full Missions add 18 new Units to these 2 basic ones.

The ARK


The ARK is the meta section of the game representing your memories as an Overseer in Siberian Dawn. When you complete a mission you earn ARK Points and this is where you can use them to unlock memories and other elements that let you change your Siberian Dawn reality.

More than 80 Content Pods hold the data and lore for most of the cards in the game, which will give you insight into what these cards bring to Siberian Dawn, as well as expanding what you know about the world.

There are also a couple of modifications that can be activated in the ARK. Echoes is an option that can be activated in the ARK to change a basic event into one that for the cost of ARK Points will boost your Glory, and Nemesis is a special enemy that can turn up in a mission after you have killed the related Boss in Skirmish mode to give a greater challenge but with the reward of ARK points for killing them.


Lore Engine


Siberian Dawn is the first game to use the Lore Deck Building Engine, taking the core of a Deck Builder and adding the depth of a War Game to give the player a more strategic challenge.

Dual Deck Development – Build a Resource deck and Tactics deck.
Bond System – Adds 1 of 4 Guild specific contacts in a Mission (Available with Mission Pack 1)
Hub System – Context relevant controls presented on a central set of pods.
Fate Helix – Action resolution using a deck system allowing control over the risk of the results.
Multiple Resource Management – Overseer has to balance a range of Resources to succeed.
Tactical Range – Overseer has a range of distinct Units and Tactics to dominate the Missions.
Mission Variety – Each Mission has a series of Objectives to give a variety of challenges.

This is a very interesting and unusual game. Yes it's a deckbuilder but don't expect something as banal as the old Dominion or Ascension as SD has you building two distinct but interacting decks. One contains your resources and fighting units while the other develops the tactics that these units will use. A wargame yes, but with emphasis on crafting your forces before jumping in.

As many others have noted the interface is a bit clunky but it's serviceable and atmospheric once you grok it. Mind you I was much happier when I realised it's possible to turn off the pulsing text. The tutorials are dense, especially the last one before the training missions. Don't be afraid to move on and go for Training Mission 1, particularly as this is when you realise how extensive the help system is.
Art style, well always a subjective area but I like it, reminds me of Mutant Year Zero, Dungeon Degenerates from Sean Aaberg and even those old Soviet era posters.

I love learning curves and once over the initial hump this looks to be quite a long and interesting one. It has that 'just one more go' feel about it and a sense of achievement when the pennies start dropping. You can also set the difficulty level which I always appreciate.

Definitely a unique labour of love here and one that I feel is well worth the small entry fee.

I'm always on the lookout for new card games and this is not it. It's not awful but its not something that I'd recommend to pretty much anyone.

This game does have some unique twists on the classic Deck Builder format.
- You build two decks Resource (Units + Currencies) and Tactics (Special effects + Actions for units)
- Glory and Investment are ways to bank your currencies for future turns. It's an especially nice addition to the traditional deck-building format.
- Randomization uses a chit draw system with 4 piles of modifiers such as the Arkham LCG. If you learn whats in each pile and watch what is drawn out, you can boost your chances of success.
- It's asymmetric and objective driven. The enemy uses a different set of a rules and usually a specific challenge every time you play.

It's a moderately-complicated ruleset, but I didn't find it nearly as hard to learn as many of these reviews. I don't dislike the core gameplay and I don't think that it fails in any way either.

But the UI is particulaly bad and it makes it really hard to learn and play the game.
- The buttons you need to interact with are scattered around the whole screen and rarely look like buttons compared to the space around them.
- The tutorial and battle details are told in large blocks of text and numbers on a screen shared with the chit draw.
- Playing a card generally takes between 3 and 5 clicks and this feel unnatural, confusing and slow.
- Important details (Such as the contents of each fate deck) tend to be buried in the UI rather than visible and helping you to make decisions.

This UI is clunky enough that it made learning the game especially difficult and after almost 2 hours I still find myself clicking back and forth trying to get the right order. It's not unplayable but its very much unintuitive and makes the game feel more complex than it is.

The secondary reason I can't recommend is the content just doesn't justify the price tag yet. The base game only contains 4 card types (2 Currencies of varied payout, and 2 characters), the tutorial (4 guided missions), and 4 training missions. There's 2 additional DLC packs so far that are about the same price as the base game.

The main menu shows alot of modes (Skirmish, Ark, Etc.) but they aren't in the game yet. It leaves a bit of an odd impression when the only buttons that work are "Tutorial" and "DLC Shop". I just feel like it needed more time in the oven before being released onto a storefront.

If development continues on the game, I'll continue to keep an eye on it. There's an interesting enough core here and it could evolve into something great. I just can't recommend it as is.
