There is so much to say about this game, to summarise I would say if you can get through the really bad first hour then you'll find a mediocre story with fun gameplay and driving, quite impressive AI and a mixed bag of graphics/audio. You can finish it in about 10 hours if you just do the main story but there's a decent amount of side content, it's not going to be the best experience you've ever had but it will be a nice change of pace from all the 40+ hour games coming out all the time. Overall a mixed rating, majority is pretty good but there are glaring issues especial with the story
Now for the fine details
The first 20 minutes of the game are mind-bogglingly bad, not even 2 minutes following the intro cutscene you abruptly become an errand boy for some random guy you've just met - and in the 30 seconds of exposition dumping on the way to his settlement half the audio cuts out between sentences due to some weird audio issue with vsync that can't be fixed with in-game settings. Unless you're getting a quest there is quite a lot of audio issues with NPC dialogue just being cut off halfway through, I probably missed a good quarter of the story because of this
Once you get to his camp you are automatically assumed to be skilled and trustworthy enough to take out an entire bandit camp ensuring the safety of the settlement despite not showing any sort of combat experience prior to this
After clearing out the camp and you go to the next settlement, do another errand for them which involves finding someone (the next settlement immediately trusts you to find a missing person) and turning on a radio tower while killing some dudes along the way and I kid you not, the very next mission is returning to the exact same place you just killed all those dudes and they've all respawned - same guys, same spawns
Truly a laughable introduction to the game even for 2011 standards, the same year we got Portal 2, Skyrim and the train mission from Battlefield 3
The gameplay feels like a mashup of doom 3 with mad max aesthetics and elements of the OG bioshock with ammo switching and a few other things. The shooting feels great and the driving segments are good fun (even when the car audio bugs out) - really great weapon variety including pistols, machine guns, snipers, crossbows, rocket launchers to name a few all with their own set of ammo types as well as other gadgets like RC bomb cars (basically a black ops RC-XD), boomerangs and other stuff to turn the enemy into paste
The animations are great down to the weapons, NPC's and the enemies, bandits and mutants will climb around the environment while you shoot at them and intelligently take cover and show damage when wounded, authority guards will take cover behind shield users and they react to your damage pretty convincingly. In the final mission there were some mutants using guard rails to jump between different platforms and that was really cool to me. All the conversations you have with NPCs have unique animations and the facial expressions look really good even now, didn't see a bad animation the entire game
I think the LOD's are busted because some textures look fantastic up close where as others look 240p in the same space and its very jarring sometimes, for example a characters face will look really crisp but they will have an armband that you can't tell if it's drawn on/a tattoo or if it's an actual piece of clothing
The main big bad of the game "The Authority" are set up to be this ominous, powerful presence but their impact is barely felt throughout the game despite your apparent importance to them. The stakes aren't clearly communicated and nothing really happens to the characters you interact with nor the places they live again reducing their impact
The side mini-games are a fun addition like the knife game, the RAGE Frenzy card game, racing and that holographic board game with the dice. Not Yakuza level minigame fun but great to have
The ending is probably the least satisfying ending I've ever seen in my entire life, the other reviews here are accurate you literally press a button and see a 30 second cutscene - game over. No closure that anything you did has any sort of real impact on the world or the resistance effort, it's not clearly explained what even doing this action will result in other than we've got more data woohoo
They should seriously put a seizure warning on the Feltrite AR rounds
It did not age well, but it is a fun shooter and a must play if you like mad max likes
The game of my childhood, RAGE, is truly deserving of praise and a reboot. However, the sequel was nothing more than a disappointment, a true shame.
Outdated in too many ways
Level design is nearly absent, gunplay has barely any impact, and so on.
had this game on PS3 back in the day, good game that give you some jumpscares from time to time
Out of memory. Horrible gun sounds.
RAGE didn't seem to know exactly what it wanted to be. A Fallout scenario (with very little freedom of movement) meets a little bit of Doom (just without the scary factor) and very few customisation options. The makers of the Doom series tried their hand at an apocalypse end-time shooter with semi-free exploration of the game world. To this day, I don't know a single person who has at least tried out the game - and unfortunately rightly so. Although the Wasteland initially appears graphically convincing, the story missions can be summarised as follows after a over-lengthy intro: Drive to point X, shoot everything that moves, loot everything and everyone and drive back to collect your reward. Side missions recycle previously visited locations and offer no replay value. There is simply not much more to do, as the game world is quite small and almost empty. The gunplay is also unsatisfying unresponsive and doesn't feel right. The selection menu during the game is also confusing and hinders the flow of the game. Sooner or later, the inventory is cluttered with literally superfluous junk. The focus on crafting also hardly plays a role, as you can buy everything you need relatively easily from the merchant. And money is obviously not in short supply in the wasteland, despite the apocalypse. You can and must switch between different types of ammunition as the game progresses, especially later on, as otherwise it is almost impossible to hold your own against the opponents. The enemy types are also not very varied and serve as bullet sponges from the second half of the game at the latest. But the worst thing about the game are the save points. These are non-existent in longer sections, even on medium difficulty. You die - you repeat the entire level. Which sadist at id Software managed to get away with this will probably remain a well-kept secret. At some points I really had to force myself to finally play through missions after several failed attempts. This brings me to the next point: There is not much to say about the storyline itself. Its rather thin. Surprising twists, interesting or even memorable characters are sought in vain. And for those who have struggled through to this point: The ending then comes quickly and unexpectedly, almost as if id Software had run out of ideas and finally put the dilemma behind them. However, you have to give them credit for the fact that they tried to make something new and most of the ingame locations have been designed with great attention to detail. Instead of reinventing the wheel, id Software should have stuck to its strengths: Linear level design but with a strong story. So: Is the game a complete flop? Not necessarily. There was potential, and you can feel it. However, it is immature, unpolished and still feels unfinished in parts. With a little more time, creative energy and will, id Software and Bethesda could have created something really special here. As it is, however, the game will probably remain a curious, failed side note in the portfolio of a once iconic gaming giant for all time.
fantasitc gun play and variety, Every gun is viable with the right ammo. If only the story was Deeper, maybe if it had a proper direct sequel with a similiar linear storyline. The racing sidequests are a lovely feature to upgrade vehicles. would love to have seen more side quests to expand on the environment, If only its launch was more steady. 8/10
The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage's shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game's characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable.

It plays incredibly well. And looks GREAT in 4k for a 2010 title. But dear god this is one god awful mess of a video game. No wonder it did terribly at launch.
Its alright for what i is, not a great game but certainly not a bad game
i did enjoy this more than i expected to but i can see that despite my enjoyment of this game, it definately wont be for everyone
The setting or the type open world is a lot like Mad Max, Borderlands or even Maze Runner, a desert like wasteland with some civilized towns, a bad military and hostile bandits, mutated crazied indeviduals and weird clan dudes
Overall a alright game, its not the best Post-Apocolyps FPS i have played, that hounor goes to the Metro and Fallout games, but i had fun with it
Good story and plenty of action
Fantastic game that still holds up after many years.
Great adventure in Mad Max like universe. Even in 2024 it feels great to play.
Back when the competition was Borderlands 1 and color schemes tended to be "brown, brown and why not some more brown?" While a tad outdated looking in 2024 and not the most fluid of controls, I still give it 5/5 and recommend to anyone who has yet to play it.
RAGE TO THE (MAD) MAX!!!
If you're like me, and considering playing this game after having finished the sequel, rest assured that this may or may not be for you. It's the same world, same lore, even some same characters, but compared to RAGE 2 this is very toned down. If RAGE 2 is DOOM ETERNAL, then Rage 1 is Half Life-ish. Very linear, even though it's technically an open world. Also very short, but there's a lot of attention to detail in the combat. I only wish there was more enemy variety and that the ending didn't feel so rushed and anti-climactic
Still gonna recommend regardless; RAGE is a fun time and if you like shooters or driving games you really can't go wrong here. Just expect slight repetition, and get it on sale. 5/10
Very disappointed that this is described as a first person shooter but you have to drive the buggy with your left hand, (NO MOUSE). STUPID way to interface. I have difficulty with my left hand and cannot drive the buggy. This needs to be fixed so you can use the mouse. I wanted to run and gun. NOT OPEN WORLD>
I like everything in this game except the ending because it sucks but fortunately that doesn't take away from the good gameplay.
2/10
Better than Fallout 3 imo. Completely in a class of its own and gets better the further you progress
A great mediocre game. I remember playing it on PS3 when it first came out. Some aspects of the game did not age well. Others still hold to this day, barely. Get it on sale and you won't be disappointed.
Blood Guns Cars all i need is beer and we are good.
waste of 3 bucks. insane screen tearing. most poorly optimized game ever. have fun running the game at 60fps only
I bought Rage based on all the positive reviews saying, "Give it a chance!" My advice? Not worth the time, even trying it out for two hours. Although I don't think Raven's Singularity is the best FPS, it is definitely better than this. There just seems to be so much pushing against my enjoying the gameplay in Rage, especially the controls for driving and using the stupid boomerang--and those were top selling-points. Stay away.
Solid gameplay
It's a cool game.
A bit too "on rails" for my liking level design-wise. Shooting is fun with nice location based damage, enemies aren't dumb, mutant animations are especially cool, kinda like in Left4Dead.
The racing is "eh", it's there and it (mostly) works. Story-wise it isn't anything to write home about, the ending is VERY abrupt and the last mission a bit underwhelming.
Look up some console commands and launch options for FOV and QoL stuff. Also launch the "64 bits with mods" thing, otherwise your game will crash when trying to enter new areas.
angry
pretty middling shooter, very much lacking in the sword of islam category
i wish there was more content. good game,
RAGE is such an incredible and underrated FPS. The atmosphere and game-play looks stunning on 4k if you can get the settings right. I totally recommend it to every Bethesda fan looking to explore a unique post apocalyptic world.
8/10.
Highly underrated FPS. Great visuals for the time, works well on a cheap gaming system at max settings
Simple, but keeps you entertained for sure. The voice acting is great.
I freakin' loved it, but I'm over 40.
ok
rage because angry
This game genuinely had so much potential. The concept itself is quite cool. Your character is part of a program to preserve humans underground, to be awoken to restart the human race after it is wiped by an asteroid? That sounds so cool!
Unfortunately, besides the premise of the game, there is nothing else that's good about this game.
The gunplay is boring. Bullet spread is so comedically big, that you end up wasting a lot of ammo. Guns also do barely any damage to enemies, you sometimes need to unload a full magazine to kill one enemy.
Enemy variety is also very lackluster. There is really only two types of enemies. Melee and ranged. Besides those two, there is literally no other enemy type.
Gameplay loop is also extremely boring. It's basically get a quest, drive to quest, kill bullet-sponges called enemies, return to base and resupply. Every quest is literally "go to this place and kill, grab an item, or activate something".
The vehicles are really under-utilized in this game. Why would I upgrade my vehicles to have the best stats possible if I can just simply boost and avoid all combat encounters? And why would I feel the need to upgrade armor when repair costs are so low? Besides driving and racing, the vehicles serve no other purpose. There are NO missions where you have to use your vehicle to actually complete something.
The plot is also extremely generic. Please tell me why, instead of creating a story AROUND the apocalypse and survival, the writers created a generic story about rebelling against authority (the bad guys are literally called "the authority"). It's also very hard to emphatize with the resistance in this game, because we are never shown the authority doing anything inherently horrible. We are only ever told how bad the authority is, which is never an effective way to get the audience to emphatize with the character's cause.
One of my go to games in high school. The game itself is nothing major but its atmosphere is amazing. if you are looking for some post apoc Mad Max style kind of game, you'll like it a lot. I wish the game would get a remaster.
I'm having an absolute blast in Bethesda's Rage world! What a fun game. This is how good games used to be
TLDR - not worth the price neither the time invested. I won`t by it even for 1$.
Cons - weird destabilized textures loading
Weird half backed game mechanics
Mediocre abrupt story
You cant not turn off screen shake
Atrocious crosshair in a core shooter game...
Spongy enemies, majority could not be killed via headshot making killing them annoying even on easy!
Audio loss and performance problems on modern hardware.
Clunky weapon special ammo/quick menu swtitch
BS expansion.
Pros -
The best rocket launcher behavior that I saw in any game.
Not bad enemies scripting and behavior diminished by sponginess of the prior.
Megatexture: The Game
I consider it a classic. Runs great now in 64bit, and looks excellent considering it's age.
Just pure, shooting, driving (over muties) crazy fun.
This one stood the test of time. Easy to play for hours, plenty to do, but not over the top like some newer games.
It's still great after all these years. Could use a remaster though, as the textures are decent in some ways and abysmal in others. Rage is in my top 150 games of all time. 8.5/10
Childhood game that brings the good vibes :)
Such Anger
Much Rage
Wow!
Interesting case where the final value of the game is less than the sum of all its ingredients.
The famous megatexture really does the job and makes a difference compared to similar titles from the same time... if you even know what you're looking at ;p
The game streams a huge texture atlas in real time, which is used by all the static assets around you. Because of that, the environmental variety is just unmatched by any other title of the time and holds up even today.
If you pay attention to detail, you will notice that dirt and rust patterns on the metal tiles under your feet are unique for each tile. The dirty benches in the ruined underground aren't just copy-pasted instances of the same asset—each one is dirty in a slightly different way. The columns that you pass by in a ruined city have unique destruction patterns on them. You will see more unique rocks in this game than in all Fallout games combined...
Yeah, let me hammer that point home - when other games from the same era show you 1 (one) rock asset copy-pasted houndreads of times (just rotated and re-scaled so you won't notice) Rage hits you with a hundred different rocks.
Hundred different trash piles.
Hundred different rust patterns.
etc.
Impressive, Mr. Carmack - You got my attention - but what is the game really about?
Well...
The whole plot is just a generic, shallow justification for the post-apocaliptic world. All missions in this game feel like randomly generated side quests; there's no real motivation for you to push forward other than your own curiosity to check out the next mission. And then the next one. And maybe one more. Until the technical novelty wears off and you're no longer impressed by another nice-looking panorama of a post-apocaliptic world.
But the game has some really NICE looking apocaliptic panoramas, believe me!
Interestingly, the mission design is scripted and linear. You enter some underground dark hole and the entrance crumbles behind you. Now you can only push forward, looking for some very important item buried somewhere in the ruins. You don't need a map for that, bc the only open way in front of you is the right way. Like in any linear shooter.
And then suddenly (un)organized grup of mutated midgets jumps in your face - they display some very impressive acrobatic abilities.
And that is probably the second best thing about Rage - animation of the enemy mutants is some seriously high quality stuff. They can detect obstacles, jump over trash cans, grab onto railings and ceiling pipes, hang on doorframes and much more - all that combined into smooth sequences.
I can't even imagine how much skill it took from the programmers and animators in ID Software to craft this perfectly synchronized system, so when some mutant grabs the pipe, his hands are actually on the pipe instead of hovering somewhere close to it. And the whole group of mutants is fully capable of jumping around you at the same time without clipping through each other or getting stuck on obstacles.
Many of today's developers, who frequently use pre-made blueprints and asset packs, can't even dream about having something like that in their projects.
There's so much more to write about - character models are very well designed and animated... weapons are very cool and fun to use... car racing is surprisingly pretty fun... boss battles are simple but still interesting to experience... and there's just a certain artistic vibe in design of the game that makes it look unique, memorable, one of a kind.
BUT
When you zoom out, stop admiring every impressive technical thing separately and just look at the bigger picture - it's not that great - everything you do here feels rather empty and purposeless...
The game just lacks something to hook you in, it's sad ID Software could not figure out a way to get the player invested in their universe.
Angry
Fallout from Wish.
I honestly quite amazed by this game. Its engaging, beautiful and lots of fun. With the ammo swapping mechanic the whole arsenal is useful even in the late game. Just give me the pistol and the buckshot ammo or the shotgun plus the pop rockets and whoa momma! The enemy ai is great, animation is top notch and the levels are freaking gorgeous. As long as you don't go in expecting Shakespeare and the openess of a Bethesda game you will have a good time.
That was fun :)
Good game
An interesting shooter. Not ID Software's best work, but also not the worst
Pros:
-The interesting premise
-Some environments are fun to explore into
-The many choices of the arsenal you can use
-Atmosphere is pretty good
-A lot of the design itself, like the subway bar, the wasteland cities, the difference between them and the high-tech Authority, that still resorts to using mutants to do their dirty work
Cons:
-It tries to be an open world, but it is pretty bland
-The Bethesda-like dungeon system, which also adds nothing interesting and new to what ID software could have done
-Lots of the NPC's have a good design, but they are mostly just to be there, without a certain personality or playing an important role in the story
-The world itself could be expanded upon, having some interesting concepts but were not developed to their potential
-One or two side missions have a story of their own, the rest being pretty basic and not changing much
-There are two boss fights, one of them being extremely weirdly placed. We have the big monster in a city ruin, without too much of a reason of being there and the leader of the Gearheads, which was the only known leader of an antagonistic faction in the game.
-The final mission was dull, without a boss-fight where it should've been, to amp-up the final sequence, the game only throwing at you a couple of mutants while doing something supposedly world-changing in the game.
-The ending was open, pointing up to a sequel which could've been something, but sadly it wasnt
All in all, a solid 6/10 in my opinion. The firefights being the only interesting aspect of the game, having so many choices of disposing of your enemies, but the lack of substance drags it down.
Like someone's review said: a 2010's tech demo.
Worth picking up at a sale though
