Satisfying roguelite game loop and really cool art style. It's pretty fun building combos in the loadouts between unique spell behavior and ink mechanics. Also the spells are just all amusing. Summoning planets, rolling dice, launching anchors, etc. The difficulty scaling is unique too, adding more and more effects to play around instead of just "enemies have moar stats". Overall feels like lots to keep me entertained.
Really good game. Lots to do for early access and damn does it feel good to go with teal ink and just spam a shit ton of missiles.
The combat gameplay is decent but in my opinion, overly simplistic, there's not much you can do other than shoot and move. There's so much potential here to add more dynamics, it plays a bit like an FPS without that extra oomph.
In regards to game style/user interface, it's a top tier title. However, I think it would be a lot more immersive if the avatars looked more humanoid (mages with faces, hair, and feet, stylistic robes, personality and voices, etc.) and one could personalize them. Currently, it's too anonymized.
At this point, I'd say 6.5/10, will perhaps change later as updates come.
I originally picked up this game because someone mentioned it being somewhat similar to Risk of Rain 2. I'm so glad that I did.
Imagine playing RoR2, but you don't have to commit to 2 hours for a decent run. You don't have to fight your teammates for loot. You're not playing beat the clock every round.
The biggest endorsement I can give this game is that it takes the spirit of RoR2, distills it into intense 20 minute runs, has lots of variety in terms of builds, and doesn't lock classes behind obscure challenges.
I'm a handful of hours in and I'm constantly unlocking new things and having a blast. Absolutely worth a purchase whether it's on sale or not.
yuh yuh yuh
super fun magic combat game, would recommend to anybody who likes action roguelikes
Disclaimer: I only got half an our in this game but already feel like i need to let people know about my first impressions because i dont think they will change alot the more i play.
I had Vellum on my list for a while now and always saw it as this rough unfinished mediocre game with potential.
And i honestly dont know where this came from ...
During the sale i took a closer look watching some videos and it looked awesome and fun - so i bought it.
Vellum has a beautiful artstyle and really is its own thing in the genre with own terms and ... it feels like its own little universe. The ui is fun and engaging, performance is good, game feels good and smooth and development is still very active.
On sale i definately recommend it right now! Cant wait to hop back in :-)
Fun rogue-like that is updated extremely frequently. Deserves way more attention honestly.
I came to Vellum looking for an alternative to Risk of Rain 2 with shorter run-times - and am pleasantly surprised so far.
The game is remarkably polished and packed with content for an early-access indie title. Its book-themed world is both adorable and fully realized, with a gorgeous art style that shows incredible attention to detail.
It leans more into co-op than Risk of Rain 2, though I haven’t tested this yet. Beyond what the RoR2 offers, it also includes rogue-lite elements, with strict vertical progression outside of runs and plenty of build-crafting potential. Whether you're customizing your free-form character classes outside of runs or experimenting with synergies during them, the systems feel deep and satisfying.
It’s also less of a RoR2 clone than I initially expected, almost feeling more like a survivor-like / Bullet-Heaven or even an third-person ARPG.
Regardless, it’s a recommended experience already.
Wonderful game, please add the ability to swap power-ups in co-op
A wonderful art visual and story that I can get behind. Mechanics are nice, clean up on the movement or add on's would be nice to feel like I lost control with too much abilities, but a wonderful time nonetheless!
Simple, yet I find it enjoyable enough to find it worth the price, plus I see that it has potential. Haven't tried it with other people yet, so can't speak for the multiplayer aspect. But if you like roguelite games then this might be it for you.
A VERY polished Early Access.
Fantastic visual style and nice attention to detail.
The game is fun to play, and I really appreciate all of the solid puns.
Very fun rogue-like and constant updates from devs.
The knockback and movement of mobs, coupled with your own erratic movements (you're either too slow or too fast) makes the game annoying. The overly complicated maps just compounds this design flaw to make for agonizing gameplay.
Surprisingly fun. A "let's see if we like this game" turned into an 8 hour session.
Wow wow wee wow! Very nice, very good game! High five! It make happy time for brain and fingers. So much fun, I like! Great success!
A fun little game, im playing solo and while I can tell there are some parts that are more multiplayer friendly, not once have I gotten stuck. Find some friends and enjoy it that way, or hang out solo like me!
Also add me on steam of you want to group play with someone, none of my friends like roguelikes XD
great updates and consistency, great content, overall a blast to play and very smooth gameplay feel. joe/10
Truly incredible game! The sheer variety in Pages of Power and the diversity of the Inks allows every run to feel very different and I'm still discovering new builds to pursue.
One of my favorite runs was one I haven't seen replicated in any other game of this genre, where I stacked up so many pages that increased my jump height and damage while jumping I could stay airborne permanently and when I landed I'd deal damage proportional to my air time, instantly killing the enemies nearby.
The patches are frequent and consistent, you won't regret this purchase.
With them adding more and more content i would say this is worth it. The difficulty is a bit on the easier side which i hope there is more multipliers later on and i think some colors may need a tweak in passives and some of the other abilities could use some tweaking but other then that it feels great. I love the way each color feels even tho its just an ult it changes the playstyle and its super fun. Would def recommend this 8/10
The movement and combat feels fluid, the builds are all fun and unique, and the game is committed to its theme in every aspect.
Vellum is an amazing game, with great visuals. It is very fun although there is no balance between the Signature inks whatsoever.
Overall 9/10 from me
Good AARPG. Scratches the itch and plenty of customization.
Highly enjoyable third-person-shooter/caster roguelite.
The customization of spells, abilities, etc. is incredibly satisfying.
Great depth of replayability.
I like the game, plays nice and smooth and i can kill a mofo with an ink blot.
Will be a good match for fans of Risk of Rain 2 and other rogue-lite shooters. The massive amount of build options ensures that each player will find their own unique playstyle and look.
So damn fun. i've only played solo so far, but man is it a really good game with solid meta progression and style.
It has a surprising amount of depth and meta progression for being early access. In my opinion, it still needs more content, but it’s honestly pretty great. A lot of devs would do a full release with less than this. Can’t wait to play with my friends.
If you're buying this, it's probably for the theme. Very cohesive literary theme and references. Barnes & Noble workers unite.
Solid roguelite. Amazing art, interesting build combos. Still in early access and comes with much of the jank, but has an active community with very involved devs. Hop in the discord and they'll be in there having conversations and reading feedback.
Not a super challenging roguelite even at the hardest of difficulties, but for a fun time with friends (or solo) highly recommended.
Super fun game! A lot of new text/ability names to get used to, but worth the $$. Feels like a mix between risk of rain and ravenswatch. Recommend it with at least a friend, but also playable solo just fine
Very fun roguelike, definitely worth the money. Deserves to be a lot more popular than it currently is.
A very solid roguelike that carves it's own very unique feel in the ever expanding genre. I wouldn't put it on the level of more well known juggernauts like Roboquest or Gunfire Reborn, but if you like those games, and want to try something similar but with one of a kind style, look no further.
TLDR: Its good and will get better, has a single glaring bug.
Pro: Customize your build with choices leading to seemingly endless possibilities (ink, ink infusions, builder, spender and movement), Really side missions give extra RNG opportunities, challenging in both group and solo play (I have about 11 hours of each), daily quests, challenges and unlocks, difficulty modifiers that will break you, immersive game design elements like naming conventions and holding to a theme. Seriously love this game! Normal runs last between 10 and 30 min depending on RNG and build choice, Endless can go up to 1 hour in my experience (see con).
Con: It has an endless mode but it isn't actually endless due to a graphics/engine bug: even if you have the best graphics card in the world, the game turns into a slide show at high levels. I usually end a run when the slide show happens because it is painful to play.
Warnings: If you dislike jump puzzles this might be extra frustrating you to . One buddy finds jump puzzles extra difficult because the characters are not grounded and the cellshaded environment makes finding an edge difficult and frustrating. I love it personally but it is a thing.
It's frankly what I wanted in a co-op action roguelike. I would say it's like Risk of Rain 2, but with wizards, and with 'pages' (modifiers for equipment) awarded at the end of a level or upon objective completion rather then fighting over chests.
You pick two attacks, left click and right click, and a dash along with a signature ink color that has a Q ability. That said these abilities can vary greatly between runs from the pages you choose between.
In addition each 'tome' (series of levels) has an upgrade page that each player gets points to assign for group bonuses. Many bonuses are exclusive to certain tomes. In addition the enemies get tougher but your group is given three choices on how they improve via voting. You can pick neutral and color specific bonuses between rounds and use collected mana to either buy new powers or advanced up a linear progression system to unlock bonuses, many of which had customizations.
I wouldn't say it's perfect but it's scratching the Risk of Rain 2 itch while also including customization often limited to singleplayer survivors-like games.
This game is WICKED.
BUY IT.
One caveat, however- It runs like absolute balls when things start to get crazy, to an unplayable extent.
Memory leak? Engine limitation? No idea.
Very fun game to play with friends. Not only there's already a variety of builds to try, devs also add new skills all the time. In the past few months there were tons of other usable updates; for example, the game finally stopped lagging in the Endless mode when you and your enemies cover the screen with particules, so now you can finally go ham on skills.
My main issue is that all monsters feel the same. I know that there are three different types with different AI and attacks, but it hard to discern monsters when twenty of them are jumping on you at once. The versatility of builds and tomes (which are kinda like worlds with unique rules that you choose before starting the run) overweighs the issue, but I can see why some people consider this game repetitive.
I've had a lot of fun playing this game, and will keep my eye out for updates.
Whole lots of skill issue in the negative reviews. One comment said they couldn't do binding 5 solo... I'm doing binding 10+ with all sorts of random builds.
Game is fun. Lots of build variety but you need some levels until you really start seeing it open up.
It's a bit clunky and could use more polish but other than that it was nice to play and combine
Great mix of risk of rain elements, varied power up perks, and enemy growth. Super fun solo or with friends.
Vellum is fantastic for rougelike and rougelite lovers. There are so many different spells, basic attacks, movements, and ink colors that finding your favorite (or most broken) combo is a game in itself. Plenty to fit anyones playstyle with enough experimentation. The intermission stages between enemies serve as a good way to relax and think about builds but also don't force a player to stay there long if they are rushing. The upgrades being at each level also can spiral into massive changes over the course of a run with an identical starting build. There are tons of add ons to make the runs harder. And different tomes can even give control to change the core party
TLDR: Vellum gives you so much power of choice to make it fit your style of fun & challenging.
This game checks so many "whoa cool" boxes but if I'm being critical it doesn't really feel good
I never felt at risk of losing in my 1st run, didn't even have to bother to look at my HP meter. You get all of these powers and abilities that sound amazing and when you go to use them they feel like you're dealing gentle taps. There is no sense of weight in attacks, it's all a bit hollow. Something is off with the combat, if they can give it weight, make it feel consequential when you are dealing out attacks and damage, taking damage, etc... then there is a very cool experience here.
I wanted to like this game, I really did. I think there is a good game here somewhere but it just isn't there yet. I'll keep an eye on it, I hope they figure it out.
It is actually good.
But on ascension (Called binding in this game)
Upgrades that does not really contribute to damage = loss
Due to how tanky each mob become with each ascension.
Even at floor 1.
Just knowing this, makes the game much less fun.
Also, much of the higher level content seems to be tailored to multiplayers.
As solo player attempting ascension 5 or higher, I find many of the build to be far from viable.
Builds are far more forgiving when playing multiplayers.
fun roguelike rpg with coop for playing with buddies, worth the $14 in my opinion, hope the developers keep on at it
This game is great. Great content and unique modifiers. Giving this game an updoot.
Honestly its just fun. Seriously its just fun. If you want a good game in this genre i cant recommend this enough. Once its fully out then im definitely gonna try to get my friends into this or at least once the current roadmap is done
Incredible potential and it really captures the one more loop feel you would get back before RoR2 was completely destroyed by their devs. This game is not RoR however and that is a good thing. I love the themes of literature and writing, I love the obvious gaming and fantasy references. I love the difficulty and the progression. I hope we get more content and options for our Scribes, and it seems we will get this before 1.0 going by the regular updates and frequent communication.
This is an EA that I can recommend already, especially if you are a solo player. 9/10 cannot wait for more content and the completion of EA.
A fun and well-made rougelite with a unique style. Im excited to see where it goes from here
