Is the price range really generous for a game like this? Absolutely.
Is it worth buying? Maybe.
While I commit The Other Half messaging of unwarranted sexual assault and mixed communication, I don't believe the game mechanic and length help it unless, for instance, there were more enemy varieties and more abilities to exploit. The gameplay was about 25 minutes too long to my liking as most of those 25 minutes ended up feeling fillerist, fighting the same 3 enemy types. It seems like the developers were trying to extend the gameplay to over the 2-hour mark to prevent you from getting a refund. If that's the case, I can understand why they would do so (admittedly, I may do the same thing if I were in their shoes). At the same time, it hinders the experience, making the game drag out of the repetitiveness.
The upgrade system also feels like a time waster. Purchasing things that improve your stats, like making your character resistant to certain attack items, doesn't feel like it made much of a change, and this isn't a hard game as you soon essentially have a lifesteal every time you defeat an enemy.
Some would argue it should have cost more for the value it offers of highlighting some important topic everyone needs to learn, but at the same time, there's a better alternative to learning about the topic. Either way, I won't hold it against you buying it, but because it's super cheap doesn't mean you have to buy it. On the other hand, if you do add it to your library, just remember to play it; otherwise, it is sitting there collecting dust because what's the point?
A short, well made game that's certainly worth $1 and 2 hours of your time.
The game does what it sets out to do, and executes the concept well with an obviously small budget.
It's gameplay focused, and tells a story with voice-overs during gameplay.
The movement and combat are solid, although pretty minimal. The short runtime is perfect; otherwise, the minimal combat would start to overstay its welcome.
In a longer game, there would have to be more player development to keep things interesting, but this game is over before the combat becomes boring.
For the price I paid and what I got, this is good.
I enjoy taking a chance on obscure, low budget games. Sometimes, I find gems like this.
It has a nice artstyle, interesting setting, and has some cool visual effects especially later in the game.
This game isn't like any other I've played before. The art and music are beautiful, the gameplay is simple but not boring, the difficulty is adjustable, and it's incredibly clever how the characters and their surroundings are all metaphors telling a deeper story. That story is much darker than the fantasy story on the surface, but both tie into each other so well. The content warning is there for a reason...
I think it's important that this game deals with the issue in a way that is subtle and told from a perspective we don't usually get to see. It's important to see abusers as humans, to see their good parts as well as their bad parts,so we don't just brush off abuse "because the person is too kind to be an abuser." Abusers are not entirely evil. They can be both kind and cruel, and there's usually a twisted kind of logic they use to justify their actions. I feel this game represents that concept very well. It's also interesting to see how the game handles the topic of one action ruining the lives of several people. Even those who were not directly involved in the incident have to deal with the aftermath.
I understand why some people don't like this game. It deals with sensitive topics and you could argue that it makes you sympathize with an abuser (although in my opinion the victim is still much more sympathetic). But I think it tells a story that needs to be told. No one is 100% good or evil. Everyone has a conscience. What's important is that we take responsibility for our actions and try to become better people. We can't undo the harm we've caused, but we can learn from our past so we don't repeat the same harmful actions. This game is far more than a fantasy adventure, and I believe there's a lot to learn from it.
It's not long (can be finished in 2-3hrs) or difficult. Combat uses a novel radial-motion attack where you direct a flame around yourself in order to hit weak points. It's simple, but manages to fill the game's short length before it can get too stale. The story touches a sensitive topic about emotional abuse, both onto others as well as oneself, but the game just isn't long enough to address anything significant about it. So it's easy to find it metaphorically obtuse at best, or offensively self-centered/pity-fishing at worst.
It's a modest project, but does some surprisingly brilliant little things, such the "purpose" that its equipable items serve. A huge gameplay spoiler: Avoid this if you have any interest in actually playing it.
Equipment stats offer boosts to Attack, Damage reduction, and Cold resistance. The equipment's flavor text all revolves around how they're pieces of increasingly radical rationalization, coping, and deflection of wrongdoing. But their stat boosts in actuality do nothing. Absolutely goddamn nothing. They're placebos. Over the course of the game, you'll be forced to give up equipment slots (thus losing aspects of your maladaptive behaviors in favor of "truth"), tricking you into feeling vulnerable even though nothing gameplay-wise has changed. This is an actual instance of "video games as art," drawing tangible parallels that no other form of media can. It's the one thing this game must be praised for.
It frequently goes on sale for less <$1. Well worth the admission to satisfy morbid curiosity.
This game was alright. which means I wouldn't recommend it unfortunately. However, I would still like to share what I thought was done well and what brought down the game.
If you decide to get this game, I recommend playing with difficulty on the lowest setting, as the gameplay was not that fun and the story is THE game.
Quick disclaimer, I played with a keyboard, so I will not be mentioning clunk (idk if other reviews speak about it)
So lets start with the best parts. The story is good, and quite sensitive, as the disclaimer at the beginning of the game warns. I think the message is good and the characters are also good for the short time we have with them.
The voice acting was overall good, I liked the voices and how they said things. There was a consistent problem of spacing words though, some pauses were too long or felt unnaturally placed.
The 2d art is great. I love it.
Now the negatives.
The 3d art was very lacking, brick textures in some places were blurry and I couldn't affect this through any settings I changed. The demon poles also looked very ugly. The rest of the 3d art was quite uninteresting, and overall it just felt like it was added afterwards as a budget/time thing.
The gameplay. I honestly think we didn't need a lot of the battles presented. It made the enemies feel boring and repetitive, and the enemies later sometimes stood around and attacked 1 or 2 at a time (except for ranged enemies of course), which limited the difficulty a lot. There was an interesting enemy at the end, however the hitboxes were so jank I couldnt hit the spores on him because he layered over them, so this was very frustrating.
so yeah, tldr:
Story good, not exceptional but still good,
gameplay average at best and very drawn out,
Art is split, "ruined" by 3d visuals
Voice acting is cool
get if you are interested in the story, ignore if looking for gameplay or anything else (unless you come for voice acting?)
TW: Sexual Assault
So this game is a tricky one. I knew as soon as I read the trigger warning and some reviews that this would have some narrative weight. First of all I love the gameplay, fighting, visuals and every other part of the game itself. It is just amazing and I highly recommend it for those facts alone. However when it comes to narrative, I think that the story will be rather dividing based on interpretation. First off if you have any sensitivity to the subject of SA DO NOT play this game. The narration can be uncomfortable but that's kind of the point. You should feel disgusted. That's actually done very well as well as the progression of the story being revealed. The use of the npcs and flavour text all add to the narrative and it's done masterfully well. The divisive part is how the narrative concludes. I will not say the specifics but I don't blame anyone for disliking this choice. I actually think that it's okay. I feel that the story isn't asking for your sympathy but an acknowledgement that Daniel was wrong but life also has to move on. In order to not spoil anything else I'll just say that though the ending is testy, the storytelling is also very well done. I actually really liked this game.
in under two hours, 'the other half' is a character self-exploratory journey after a traumatic experience in which said character is the culprit and perpetrator. as soon as you open the game you get a warning, this is about sexual assault, a theme that is not only very sensitive but also extremely difficult to get a satisfying ending. i don't think there's ever a satisfying ending to such theme, so the point we reach with this game is at the very least acceptable.
the gameplay is not exactly interesting but it's very responsive and the scenario has parallels to what is being said during the monologues/dialogues. i will recommend this game because i think it does a good job to show MEN the mistakes of forcing themselves onto others, after all we follow daniel's path, not annalise's. if this game helped an incel or two to have some enlightenment towards their expectations and ways they treat women, this is a win already.
It's a very exciting game with challenging yet manageable fighting, excellent voice acting, it's short, might take you around 3-4 hours to complete yet it makes you think and shows you are not the only one who has similar problems. Absolute must and highly recommended.
A dark-fantasy short story, where at half of the plot the fantasy part disapears and the story became dark...very, very dark.
Love it.
This game honestly just seemed like it was trying to build sympathy for a the perpetrator of sexual assault. I saw what they tried to do, but it came off as "I feel bad for assaulting someone, give me sympathy." Honestly a story that really didn't need to be told
First, let me state this is a pretty boring game. That being said, it has a compelling enough metaphor that I somewhat forgive it.
The Other Half is a game that asks a question for which there is no easy answer: For those that have done wrong, is there any redemption? And if there is, how do you go about it? Do you demonize yourself, acknowledge you are not worth redeeming, and ultimately just give up? Do you seek the forgiveness of the one you wronged, knowing it is ultimately something you are doing out of a self-serving need to be absolved of your guilt?
The actual gameplay itself falls short. But the metaphor and clever usage of deconstructive videogame concepts makes it difficult for me to rate this game poorly.
I'm so very split on my final feelings about this game. On one hand, I didn't have any fun going through it. On the other hand, I acknowledge I don't think I was supposed to. To make a game of this type of message "fun" in your typical videogame sense would have only detracted from the overall message. Like having a gratuitous fight scene in a film where the theme was anti-violence.
I guess if I were to sum up my overall feelings about this game in a few words, it would be that I did not have fun, but I was told a very compelling narrative.
With its beautiful cover art and not that dreadful screenshots, I was kind of expecting something... wholesome? The Other Half is not that. Over the course of about 2 hours of playtime, a feeling of general unease grows to a whole other level, while we get to witness our protagonist's descent into... well, I'll leave that for you to discover.
The gameplay and fighting mechanics with this top-down perspective took this PC gamer some getting used to (controller is advised, but I suck at using controllers), but even with a keyboard I managed just fine. Left hands wasd + spacebar, right-hand arrow keys is all you need.
The art is nice, and the sound design is fine. I just wish the writing and character development were just a little better to get me invested in the story. I just can't escape the feeling I wasn't as engrossed by it as the creators intended.
Still, I enjoyed it for a few hours and got it with 90% off (I paid 65 cents) on steam sale, so quite a bargain. Almost free. :-)
The Other Half was a surprisingly good small game. The combat mechanic is unique and it works (although not sure how it handles without a gamepad). The game drags a bit showing more of the same content towards the end, I think the game should have been shorter or shown greater variety. Where The Other Half really shines is the story. Gameplay mechanics and themes are mixed in with the story in a nice way.
I don't know about this one. Gameplay is mediocre but clearly not the center of it. While the game is about blame and guilt I don't know why they choose to build it around sexual assault... All in all it feels like it doesn't really have a point to it but rather likes to provoke (and no, not provoke thought)... So... Maybe pass...
Very nice little game that you could play in one sitting
+ fun gameplay mechanic
+ beatiful sound and voiceover
+ an engaging story
I've requested a refund.
From the beginning, it was indicated that this game deals with themes of sexual assault, and it does, but poorly. (mild spoilers ahead)
Somehow, the narrative, while correctly asserting blame and fault, manages to center the perpetrator in such a way that the survivor is still just a prop to make you feel sorry for the perpetrator, who just didn't know any better. By owning these 'mistakes', things will be fixed???
Started out as a really strong concept where I thought I could feel the plot twist coming (between Daniel and Annalise), but then managed to screw things up anyway.
Oh, I wonder if this was written by a man... Of fucking course it was. No offence, but I'd dare to bet money that the writer wasn't sexually assaulted.
The graphically phallic references as you progress would be funny if the subject wasn't so dour and serious. It just made it feel like sexual assault is a joke. I don't get what they were trying to accomplish. This really wasn't "owning mistakes" as far as I felt it.
I think I was near the end but I couldn't stand to finish it. Someone please let me know if it somehow miraculously redeems itself by letting Annalise kill him or something.
Before I forget, it runs no problems on Ubuntu 16.04. Controls are fluid, mechanics are interesting. It really is a shame, it had potential but fell flat on its face in the execution for the story.
When I set my controller down as the credits started to roll, I felt...conflicted. Uncomfortable. Dissatisfied. It wasn’t until after I allowed the last third of the game to truly sink in that I was able to appreciate it for what it is, although I can’t say that I enjoyed it. That’s not to say The Other Half isn’t a good game. It is a good game. It’s an important game. It’s a game that tackles some fairly hefty themes that I as a woman was unsure I wanted to tackle. But I’m glad that I did, because in a world where a single mistake in one’s past forever defines them, a world in which no matter how sorrowful or remorseful a person is, forgiveness is forever withheld, we need games like The Other Half to tell us that we're wrong. I really don’t want to say more than that for fear of ruining the story, just know that this game is an experience. Whether it’s a good or bad one is ultimately up to you. Curated by: Chudah's Corner
An excellent narrative experience THAT ALSO HAS fun gameplay AND the gameplay and narrative experience link together well WITH (in my interpretion) the metaphors spanning the psychological experiences of the secondary characters, the way gameplay progresses and also in terms of the ways visuals are used to display those experiences.
If you're the kind of person who likes smaller, interesting games then: yes. Buy it.
Very good little game. Only has about two hours of gameplay, so keep that in mind.
Combat system is interesting. Simple, yet engaging. Really only three buttons: Move, fire, short sprint in one direction.
Story is revealed through narration as you defeat demons.
I can't give a full review without spoilers, but I highly recommend. Very informative. Take the "Sexual Assault" warning seriously.
Good combat? Check. Good narrative? Double check, underlined, highlighted.
The content warning is very appropriate - once revealed, it plays a huge role in the story. Expect to feel uncomfortable.
The game’s greatest strength is its story. In the beginning, it appears to be another take on a tried and true formula - a hero comes to rescue a town from a great evil. But soon the game drops hints that not everything is as it seems. Over its 2 hour run time, the game expertfully keeps you wanting more as the story takes a dark turn. When I reached the ending, the game’s story stuck in my thoughts for several more hours.
The combat is simple and effective. You use the analogs to move around and control a flame that circles around your character. When facing opponents, you attack weak spots. “Perfect” dodges gives you a brief moment of invincibility.
I would heartily recommend this game for all of the reasons above.
Well... that got dark.
TRIGGER WARNING: That "Content warning: sexual assault" disclaimer is not a joke. No, there's no sexual assault in the game, but the topic is central to the plot. If you aren't comfortable with that, skip this one. If you can handle it, then full speed ahead.
Here's my experience. I was looking for a fun and engaging top-down adventure game, and when I stumbled across The Other Half. It looked cool, and the price was right, so I decided to give it a whirl. I'm so glad I did, but not for the reasons I expected. I sat down to pay a few minutes, just to get familiar with the controls, and ended up playing straight through the game. That's a first for me.
First of all, the game itself is really good. The play control is smooth and straightforward, and the combat demands focus and rhythm to get right. Also, it's staggeringly beautiful, not just because of the graphics style, but because of the way everything flows together.
At first blush, The Other Half has all the trappings of a classic adventure RPG. You have the enigmatic main character, the damsel/healer, the cocky half-antagonistic support character, and some standard NPCs. It's formulaic enough to be comfortable, without being insipid.
Then it gets weird. Like, I'm not going to ruin it for you, but if you ever had that lit teacher who seemed to go off the deep end when discussing symbolism, well, that teacher would love this game. Like, a lot. When you get to the part where the world does this trippy disco thing, then you'll know what I mean.
If you you can handle the subject matter, which the developers addressed respectfully and with exactly zero punches pulled, then you're in for an amazing experience. Pay attention to the names. Pay attention to the details. Be honest with yourself.
