A chill and wholesome game with a simple story and beautiful graphics.
very cute, but extremely short point and click walking game with a bit of story and quite a few collectibles.
the story is written and voiced at the same time.
takes around ~2 hours to complete if going for 100% achievements. if only following the story (& not caring about collectibles) i think you can complete it in... 20-40 minutes?
rest of my playtime is idling for card drops.
overall i would say it's not really worth it on full price judging by the small amount of playtime you'll get out of it, but i definitely enjoyed my time. so if you can pick it up in a bundle or on a sale, very much recommended if the above description interests you!
this also seems like a perfect game for a small child to play as a cute lil wombat and explore.
Super chill point and click game with very lovely art style and music. Can be finished in 2 hours if you want all achievements. Story is about a lil wombat's journey and you just can't ignore the cuteness of it. <3

This is a point-and-click walking simulator that is about the little adventure of a wombat, an Aussie marsupial. The story is not complex, as it conveys and educates a tiny bit about the habitat of the little animal. It's a cute game with a soothing and cheerful colour palette, a comforting ambiance, and adorable animation. The art, like watercolour, is beautiful and delights passer-by. It is quite idyllic, since the intention is to spend time with the little ones so that they get to know about this animal that wanders in the woods and, apparently, dwells with people who live there. It's fun to learn. Likewise, it's pragmatic, pedagogic, and charming.
Recommendation: 8/10
Prrrbbbbt.... As succinctly as possible. I DO recommend this if you are a parent of a very young child AND you buy this on sale. Otherwise, give it a pass.
Paperbark is an 18-30 minute playable storybook about a slow-moving wombat exploring the Australian bush. It's unique as an interactive storybook, plus the animations and art style are incredibly charming... and that's about all this has going for it.
In Paperbark, you click to explore a foggy landscape and slowly reveal terrain and animals as you do. This style of landscape reveal isn't really in service of anything other than the storybook aesthetic. The one time the text implies they're about to do something unique... nothing happens.
The world is seemingly big only because you can't see. The camera is at an inconvenient fixed angle and you often can't see where you're going on top of the already obfuscated landscape. It's even worse because not only are you clicking on invisible areas you can't see, but the pathfinding leaves much to be desired and can cause your wombat to wander in circles.
The only indication of where to go is paw prints on the ground. Your goal is to reach the end of the trail to trigger the next part of the story. There's also some extras to collect like a stickerbook, 50 beetles, 15 flowers, and each level has 5 collectible bugs. But... that's not enough for $5.
I kind of wonder who this is for. It follows the tone of games like Shelter and Extinction is Forever, but it's extremely short. It might be a fun game for 2-4 year old kids if you really took your time to get every single beetle but I feel there isn't enough content here for anyone, especially not for $9 (or $5 on sale).
I was just hoping for a little more. A creative use of the medium. Instead, it's a 15-minute collectathon for $5. I've had a lot more hours and more fun with cheaper games.

Paperbark is essentially a walking simulator where you play as a wombat. Cute concept, and it tells a nice story. It ran kind of bad on my PC, I don't know why, I've managed to play much bigger, graphic heavy games without issues but this ran quite poorly. I wanted to 100% it and it's kindaaa tedious, and the fog/whiteout around your character is really annoying. I know it's part of the aesthetic, but man. Please. The controls are also quite annoying at times, and if you accidentally click too close to a log or flowers the wombat will spend fifty years finishing eating/breaking it before you can move on. You can't backtrack from it.
Most of this is just small stuff, and it's mostly the fact that it's not my type of game. It's cute, I'm glad i experienced it, but not for me, not again LOL.
I won't recommend it, but I do realize this has to do with taste, mostly. A lot of you will find this game perfect and love what it has to offer. It is not a bad game necessarily, just not for me.
