Years ago, I learnt Japanese mahjong by chance. It is such a charming game that I would like to share with anyone. After a few trial and errors, I am glad to publish this Japanese mahjong game made by myself! Mahjong Club is a casual mahjong game based on authentic mahjong rules. Here are the major game modes:
Story Mode
Life in high school is always enjoyable but short. When the summer break arrives, what would be happening to these mahjong club members? Story includes 30 characters from 6 different schools. Traditional AVG systems is applied for whom are interested in scenarios. It is not fully finished for now, expect weekly updates for this part~Quick Game
Only wants to have fun playing mahjong? No problem! All 30 characters can be selected in this mode, each with a powerful specialized ability to help you win the game. Both individual match and team match are included. Choose your favorite character, and have fun with the 'cheating' mahjong rules!Tutorial Mode
Not really know how to play mahjong? Learning can be simple! A complete tutorial mode is implemented for beginners. It is not sufficient to teach you how to be a mahjong master(even I am not one :C), but it is definitely enough to teach you the essentials to start playing mahjong games.Limited by personal capabilities (or funding), the game content may not be very rich. I will add more story episodes and more game mechanics in the future updates. Hopes that you will start to enjoy playing mahjong after playing this game.
Mahjong sure is fun, isn't it?

I had fun playing with friends despite some bugs, it feels like playing saki
This game is... fine. It feels like more effort went into the menu screens than the game. Play angle is weird. Translations are weird, ranging from "sounds like" translations for riichi (reach) to clunky translations for yaku and even stranger machine translations for dialogue.
There are free alternatives that do a better job at teaching the game, from scoring to strategy.
A mahjong game with abilities/superpowers, and a game baring similarities to the 'Saki' franchise.
It's good to play with friends, and is a nice break from regular mahjong.
Encountered a few bugs in multiplayer, but solved quickly. (crashing stops once the victim hosts a game once.)
Gameplay has pretty bad balancing issues, but it's all fun and games with friends.
It's a pretty barebones game, and there are better mahjong clients out there, but it's definitely a game you should try if you have a group of friends who enjoy mahjong, and if you want a change of pace.
Steam has tons of Shanghai mahjong tile games but those ain't real mahjong. Mahjong Club is one of a few that is the real deal mahjong game.
Despite some bugs, the gameplay is surprising good. Every character in the game has their own special ability and perks that are naturally inclined towards having advantage over the outcome of their hands or favour towards a certain of play style, or having a higher chance of drawing a particular class of tiles, or gravitating towards a certain yaku.
The anime-ish characters and their abilities and skills resembles the counterpart from the characters of the Saki anime. It reminds me of the gameplay of some character's special skills somewhat similar to the Saki mahjong games on PSP/PSvita, such as Saki's trademarked special mahjong skill, "Rinshan Kaihou" or the "Dead wall draw".
A plus is that Mahjong Club is beginner friendly to those who are new to mahjong. It has a nice beginner friendly tutorial and practice drill to introduce newcomers to the basics of mahjong and yakus.
For the price, its pretty good.
its not perfect, but if you're looking for a proper mahjong game, in English that's not just another waste of space solitaire game, then this ones worth the money.
If you're new to riichi then you probably won't enjoy the game or learn much. I can't attest to the multiplayer (it doesn't work properly so no one plays it), but the single player modes are pretty great. The story mode is a nice touch, but the writing isn't great with plenty of spelling mistakes. I've mostly played this game offline as something to easily play when I don't have access to mahjong soul.
For context, I play Mahjong online and in-person and the AI in this game are horrible as nothing really feels organic but rather stale and robotic. The abilities are a nice touch but nothing to be game-changing.
Do I recommend this game? No, mainly due to it's poor performance but the clunky AI and an overall incomplete game make this not something worth buying. If the devs update this game or make a better sequel then I'd be willing to give it a try, but for now go play Mahjong Soul or Yakuza as you'll get a better Mahjong experience overall.
My review as a amateur Japanese Mahjong Player
Intro
The game is liken to how the manga/anime "Saki" is, i.e. characters with their own ability.
Pros
- All characters are unlock at the start for you to choose.
- Though there are many characters, being able to see each other's ability during the game is helpful
- Finally, Mahjong game that is without any H-scene, Ecchi-scene or girls in skimpy clothing
- Beginner friendly as tutorial explains the different and it is split between beginner and advance
- 1) It explains the different suits
- 2) There's a "shuffle Practice" mode that lets you practice your winning hands formation
- 3) Advance explains the extra points that is obtain at the end of the game
Cons
- Lack of story modes and story related Mahjong battles.
- Lack of public games, which means you only can play with CPU or your friends (that is, if you have any that is interested)
- Lack of interaction between players during the games
Neither here nor there
- Choosing a character ability to suit your play style is a big part in this game
- BGM is nice but it's not something you would want to listen for the whole of your game
- There is no timer for you to throw your tile
Verdict
I recommend the game for people who are beginners, for people who like and wants to experience what's it like in the manga/anime "Saki" and for people who are bored of normal mahjong for the following reasons
- 1) Beginner friendly as
- there is a good tutorial page
- character with ability is liken to a handicap that allows beginner to learn better
[*] Lack of timer so beginner can take their time to place their tiles
- 2) The game can be use in a family setting, even for kids,
- 3) It meets the intention of the creator of being a casual game, eg the music, the lack of timer, the not complicated controls, highlighting tiles that gives extra points
I love the concept and bought the game wanting to love it. However, the English translation is terrible, and the table layout hurts to look at. I'd love to rate this positively, I just can't until there's some actual editing and the game doesn't look worse than a lot of ancient freeware mahjong sims. Also, game is buggy (flashes a lot) and the pop-up user interface is unintuitive. Game could also use more sound effects on pop-ups, calls, etc. And abilities don't work as intended often, score display is bugged, and many other features are buggy.
6/10 Good for single player but multiplayer is too buggy.
This game is goof if you want to learn Riichi Mahjong, I bought this game to play with friends online,
but the online play is buggy and unstable:
The multiplayer only works properly when there are only 2 players and 2 AIs.
If you try to do 3 or 4 player PVP the game bugs out: players disconnect when the game starts, players can't always see each others moves, calls that don't work, and there can be long delays on playing tiles after clicking them.
This game has a very clean and accessible Tutorial menu, which is very easy to use and read Yaku from. I have been teaching myself Mahjong for about 5 days.
The first 2 Days were horrific, I had no idea what I was really doing, or why I wasn't winning or losing when I thought I should be.
Day 3 I bought this Game.
By Day 4 this game had taught me all of the basics of Mahjong and I was ready to move on to advanced tutorials - Day 4 also saw my first ever win, which was against real players, and I won with a fairly complex hand of Terminal and Honours, achieving a total of 7 Han, with open hand penalties!
This game was undoubtedly the first step to my genuine understanding of Mahjong, and even though I am not a fan of the slightly flirty anime style of Mahjong games like this, I would happily pay the cost of this game again out of gratitude.
Honestly, based SOLELY on my desperate need to learn, and the way this title fulfilled that need: 10/10
You'll have to decide for yourself how good the game is in any other way.
I play Mahjong as a not very often leisure activity. I got into Japanese Mahjong because my friends buggered me about it, knowing that I play Hong Kong Mahjong. I don't call myself average even after months of play, but I wanted something that helps me train and get used to it(Because the physical size difference and tiles and different rules of each yaku and stuff is more complex than what I'm used to), something that can be played offline in case I don't get internet.
This is, if not the best actual Mahjong experience on Steam, is a great tool to either kill your time or hone your skills.
I'm just going to ignore story mode, haven't tried that at all since that's not the main reason I bought this game.
Graphics are meh, but that really doesn't matter. The characters are drawn okay I guess.
Tutorial is great for folks who have zero knowledge into Mahjong to pick it up. I also appreciate the training mode where I need to make a hand in 26 tiles.
The ability part does make some interesting elements, have to admit. Lots to pick and play with.
Praise to dev for adding a speed slider for those who really want to just have quick games.
I do have one issue though: I turned off all sound options but the blaring trumpets still play when I enter a game. Please fix.
Would buy at current price.
Adaptation of one Japanese comic/ movie about
Highschool teens and addiction to MahJong.
Game is rather basic and coarse.
Storyline is incomplete, nor does it have any involvement in Mahjong games.
Bugs of turned tiles, occassional crash, and
much unbalance in certain skills.
Too much RNG and Luck involved.
Prepare for a long tedious grind just for certain achievements,
few are just too impossible and long to await to happen.
Countless days of testing just to get Matsudaira Chiyo to get a God Win.
Not recommended at the base price and present state.
For any beginner or player looking to play with bots, this is a great tool. The tutorial covers terminology and yaku extremely well and newcomers can really benefit from this sort of explanation. I think the explanations on the more advanced stuff like scoring is a bit brief however. The presentation is super friendly to new players and I suggest they try it out, much better than lots of what is online.
Story mode is lacking purpose. The portraits aren't well drawn enough to be worth an entire mode where they do nothing but interact. Add some actual mahjong in there, or better yet, implement some of the rules and principles behind the game and have it act as a tutorial at the same time.
Online is unfortunately not active and I haven't been able to use it. I don't really like the idea of the girls having special powers, and I would prefer if that and red doras were turned off by default.
Basically, this is recommended if you are looking to learn the game or play with computers.
It is the only game which will let you play actual Mahjong on steam. Which is crazy, but it is besides the point. Personally I don't prefer Riichi, but you take what you can get. The story is interesting, the chapters were not too long, but I was a little disappointed that it did not include any mahjong matches. I would also like to see more control over the rules, like setting minimums, and maximum scores for complete hands. What the Limit was etc. Maybe also have the choice between different styles, like Old Hong Kong, European Classical and New Hong Kong.
The board and tiles look really good, and if it were released as a standalone game with just the Mahjong, I would buy it, even if the game is a little rough, and needs to be finished.
For a game exclusively about Mahjong, try Battle of Mahjong
A solid Japanese Mahjong experience with unique abilities for a large variety of characters that can be turned off for the traditional gameplay format. The tutorial has some great functions, such as being able to work on building winning hands without having to worry about other players, and a categorization system of the various yaku needed to win the round: highlighting easy yaku for beginners to aim for. The music is fairly generic, but definitely not annoying, and the sound effects get the job done. The art style is overall pretty good, if you get get past how strangely drawn most of the characters' eyes are: the soft and warm color palette is very soothing until you run into the early riichi that ruins everyone else's hands.
The English translation is a little sketchy at times, such as using "Last Step" and "Back" interchangeably. The most bizarre translation is referring to a "Draw" as an "Abortion." It also has numerous spelling and grammar errors in the Story Mode. The Story Mode itself doesn't seem to serve a purpose since it runs like a visual novel with nothing attached, not even mahjong. However, the important terms are still familiar like Riichi, Pon, Chii, Kan, and so forth.
Multiplayer was just added and the developer is right in that it's pretty barebones. Probably the most glaring issue I have with it at the moment is that the lobby seems to close immediately after a game completes, meaning that the lobby has to be recreated if a group of players want to play multiple games of mahjong. There's virtually no one touching it at the moment, so it's great that the developer thought to include AI to fill in the remaining spots.
I really wish there was some sort of visual/audio cue that indicates when the characters' abilities are affecting the game, particularly in the singleplayer mode, since the only indication of them being present is simply being observant. This is not very good for the characters that have luck-based abilities.
It's a nice buy for what you're getting, especially considering that there are numerous ways of playing Japanese mahjong for free. Legally, of course.
Improve the English overall. I wouldn't mind helping some, but my Japanese is decent at best, and Chinese non-existent.
Change "legal" to "tenpai", maybe?
Change self-draw win text from "ron" to "tsumo".
Add furi-ten.
On South 4, CPU dealer quit after winning a hand despite being in last place. Why?
Kajino Sachisa is utterly broken. Almost 100% chance for daburii while dealer, and even if it's not a tenpai, half of the time the hand is already set for sanankou or better.
Nagase Nazuki slows the game's pace to a crawl. Ponds will be full of pairs or even triplets by the end of the hand, which means half or MORE of all draws were wasted. Give players the ability to disable her (or anyone else they don't want to see), maybe?
It's a fun Saki-clone but feels very unpolished right now. It seems to be a very small development team, so that's understandable, but in its current state I can only really recommend it because of the terrible lack of decent mahjong games in the west. Plus it's my first attempt at playing MagicMahjong™.
This Game is influenced by Saki-Mahjong Manga Series, so yeah, every girl has at least one ability, and it's a good choice to trainning Riichi-Mahjong on computer or later online to play with other player when the game updated to add this and then can be played.
Points: 9/10 and 87/100
The game is still early in development, I can see some potential in this game, but it's a nice casual game when you're trying to take a break. A recommendation is to incorporate actually playing mahjong into the story mode, and maybe have special rules or something when playing in story mode, because the story mode honestly feels very bare and kind of boring. The tutorial covers the basic rules and types of hands that you can make, which is very helpful to someone like me, who is used to playing Hong Kong Mahjong. Other than the fact that the story mode can use some improvement, I would recommend this game if you want to learn how to play Japandese mahong or you just want to take a break and play some mahjong.
Fantastic Mahjong game true to Japanese Riichi rules. Should have been options to allow or disallow certain yakuman hands or rules, but it is minor complaint. Riichi fan? Go try! Win! Master game and smile!
i know, i know. but don't judge a review by the person's playtime.
This game, is the, if not the most absolute one in teaching you japanese mahjong.
It's a first for me, for learning mahjong like, from games and wiki, but still doesn't know how to do it. But this game really speeds up my knowledge on it, and i at least learnt a few tips and tricks from this game's tutorial. It's up to you, but i recommend this game to GOTY.
Decide to try the game out open a quick game.
>First game
>Yakuman with the Hand of Heaven.
I rate this game 48000/10.
Best game ever.
