Fantastic game with one of the most beautifully well made and well realized worlds I've gotten to be a part of in a long time.
It most evocatively captures that stark, alien bleakness of Morrowind and thats captured in the writer's unflinching adherence to their own world building and narrative.
Ive seen lots of complaints about the game being hard, unfair or too challenging and I strongly disagree with those claims. It is a ROLE-PLAYING game. Immerse yourself as a Vagrus, live like you would if you were a part of this world and you'll find it its challenges to be beautifully immersive.
Good game
good
Try Demo before buying. It is a good game but with very iffy taste.
Things I don't like:
Game incentifies hustling while providing you with WALLLLS of text. You either tune your brain to hustle (and completely ignore walls of text unless there is a price tag somewhere along the lines) or tune into RPG element (and then your progress basically turns to a halt, because you read and read and read and then you execute an action).
Lots of text becomes obsole second time around, but there's no visual cue to read lines, I forget about it, click it and wham - nothing - I just robbed myself of time.
Companion combat is... I don't know, I usually don't do it, it feels like lacking depth.
Caravan combat actions are laughable most of the time: Well I can make your median outcome worse, but I can very slightly increase your chance for crit success if you click me! Gee, thanks, I'll stick to makeshift barricade, that actually seems to shift numbers in a meaningful way.
It's that kind of slog that stops being funny for an adhd brain, because rewards are hardly noticable. After a bit of learning the ropes and hustling I could afford a bigger caravan, awesome! More space, more packages to trade! I dipped my neurons in dopamine sauce and crunched like crazy. Then I have learned I can buy an outpost only if I could deposit few hundreds bross. Awesome! New kick. Then I have learned that to buy an outpost I have to grind that incremental game of hustle which would be a fine goal but 'sides hustling there's only fighting and both start to feel repetitive after a while. No problem, you say? Do some quests? Yea, a lot of them are fetch quests, with mulitple stages even.
Problem is, to get the goods and haul my a*s back to Lumen or whatever sh*thole my questgiver is in, I have to always map a meaningful route with supplies, trade and factions quests along the way to earn back for those supplies and then some. That is fun to do like fifty times in a row, yea, after that it's just another chore and rewards are meager compared to a good single faction fetch.
Some visuals are... well I hate Harvak, ok? I hate his little mantis appendige, it freaks me out.
Incentive to travel is actually stiffled out: I wanted to travel further and see some actual woods right there on the map. No no, vagrus, you pitiful f*ck, you stay right here, there's some ISSUE and we cannot let anyone out all around the border. Wanna travel? Go to Avernum - Uh oh... what?! Avernum is the same sh*thole as Deven or any other sh*thole I wanna see some fu*king dragon people you twisted f*ck of an imperial guard!
Perhaps you can get there in DLC or later in the game, but oh well, that's a little too late.
Things I like:
Very, very cool and unique settings.
Hustle is real, feels good (at least for a time).
Game IS unforgiving. This no f*cks given attitude is rare and refreshing.
I can scribble my own notes uWu.
I can f*ck up Harvak and I will.
I have played a few other trading games, but this one is the best so far. It's not easy and one must pay attention. However, I cannot see a final objective that I'm working towards, besides accumulating a lot of wealth. For me, it becomes a large sandbox game, literaly, to explore. Yet after 15 hours, I am starting to lose interest trudging between cities buying and selling hopefully low then high. 65/100
Cool oldschool adventure/RPG game - it does not hold your hand, you very much have to find your own way around and figure out what to do and how to it - oh, and you WILL die on your first try.
But very nice!
Amazing mix of visual novel and roleplaying with an open world feel, Vagrus is pretty unique and while punishing, is a lot of fun.
A very different game, one that should be enjoyed at a slower pace. Great storytelling, atmosphere, and gameplay loop. The combat has grown on me; on my first playthrough (maybe a year or so ago), I disliked the combat, but this time around I've actually really enjoyed it. Only a few scenarios have left me frustrated; not really the fault of the combat mechanics but more that they're almost impossible without knowing a specific gimmick prior to the combat; blackdemon at the end of a certain companion's questline as an example.
As a testament of my enjoyment I purchased the season pass and I don't own any other season pass (or season pass like). I see myself coming back to this game many times in the future as I've still got lots to discover. I look forward to all the future content they're able to make.
This game is surprisingly fun and interesting if you like well-written text heavy adventures (I do!), and it's nice to support a small indie developer. With quite a few hours in, I've barely scratched the surface of the interesting and well-written story. Trading gameplay is great as well, although I find combat a bit hard to figure out!
In Vagrus - The Riven Realms you play as the Vagrus of a comitatus which literary translate to „Leader of a Caravan“ in game.
The Riven Realms are a harsh place to live in, and as you play you can dig into the lore of the world the developer came up with.
There is no overarching story in the game that takes you from the start of the game to the end of it, instead you experience more or less self-contained stories along the way to your chosen victory condition. They all contribute, some more as others, to the world building and will deepen your understanding of the in game world, though.
This means you have to read a lot! At least during your first time in the riven realms.
For me, the game is a mix between a caravan trading sim / adventure book / tactical combat RPG.
Gameplay loop is basically you making money by doing trading through tasks or by yourself or through mercenary contracts. Then you use the earned money to finance exploring and proceed with some quests.
The difficulty in this game mostly comes from not knowing what the future holds for you.
Be it related to the sweet spot of the size of the comitatus you want to keep all the time, the amount of supplies you need to take with you when you go exploring, the skills that are worth investing in and so on.
And yes, there are circumstances where a failed skill check can lead to death.
However, the game autosave every in game day and whenever you leave a settlement, so even if you do not save manually from time to time you do not lose much playtime.
If you like story rich games, give it a go!
If you do not like to read, this game is not for you!
rng kills every game that is promising.
fixed it with some fine tuning. Game is fun and relaxing
Grindy and wordy
Overall, I would give it a 7.5/10.
If you enjoy reading, bump this up to an 8.5.
I absolutely love the world and the setting; I am keen to see more products related to this lore. This is definitely a game for those who love to read (I certainly fit that category). There is no lack of content, and the various stories mesh decently well together. Immersion is one of this game's strongest points.
Some of the mechanics are frustrating, if you want any shot at achievements, prepare to be frustrated and save scum a hundred times over. However, if you want to play just for the story and go with an easier experience, there is an easy mode (but no achievements).
My more serious gripe is with the initial pacing. Starting out is the biggest grind because you do not have the resources to travel far and carry much or fight many opponents. To get better paying jobs, you need to increase your reputation with a number of the factions. But to gain reputation, you need to perform jobs, which do not pay much at first. Meanwhile, you need to pay your crew or they will get very upset with you (imagine that). The first half of the game I was essentially running this small triangular circuit (once in awhile I could pick up a companion) and it was a slog. At some point the dam breaks and money did not become a concern...but I was close to stopping because of the monotony.
I did not get into the companion's stories until I was essentially halfway through the (now removed) time limit. My interest rekindled with vigor when I started going through more narrative content.
On that note, there is a guide on Steam that helps with some of the walkthroughs: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2888694005
This will save your time like nothing else. There are several instances where you advance a plot only to realize you are woefully unprepared but now are stuck with a bunch of ravenous passengers/used up cargo space you cannot offload until you level up your other companions and come back.
Despite the drawbacks, I am of the opinion that developers/studios that attempt to build unique games that actually work should be rewarded with praise and patronage. This game is truly a piece of art that is well worth the time, if you have it.
This game is amazingly fun! It's devs are hardworking who do what we all want our game devs to do...they make an awesome game!
I really enjoy this game. Very original text based adventure with lots to do. The only thing i don't really care for is all the clicks to get to your destination. It'd be great to plan your route and then punch it so it automates parts of the travel and makes it easier on your hands. Otherwise, i really enjoy this game and recommend it!
Over 200 hours on record.
Yes, I recommend this game providing you are looking for an old school, pen and paper style choose your own adventure style caravan simulator.
The type of caravan is a choice between the usual 3 for these types of games: Explorer, Merchant and Mercenary.
The storylines and attached characters are interesting, they'd have to be for you to go so far to visit some of the worst places humanity can imagine and fight the horrors you find there.
The stories are 99% of the time a book page that you choose your answers on. Yes, there are a lot of words in this. If you can't read well or don't want to, this game absolutely isn't for you.
Combat is difficult to learn and more so to master, party combat and caravan combat both influence each other and both are punishing but once you start to feel out the tactics available to you and sus out the enemies you're fighting you can ensure you always come out ahead.
The economy is simulated well enough but only impacted by your actions, sell to much of something you crash the price and it might take a week or month to recover. You can't affect what goods are produced by factions and try to influence the market that way. I'd like to see goods moved by NPC caravans affect the world to introduce reactive gameplay elements.
Caravan management is in depth, managing your employees and... Uhh... freedomly challanged workers is interesting and has pros and cons to your employment style. Same goes for the types of beast of burden you use, all have pros and cons. There's gear and equipment to install that will affect how you cross the wastes too. I love this aspect of the game.
There's no beating around the bush, this game is hard and you can find yourself in a tail spin, going down, before you've realised it and you're probably looking down the barrel of restarting the game or a soft restart where you make it to a town, downsize everything and get back on your feet with small contracts.
Yes, I recommend this game, I recommend playing it on the default difficulty and once you've played a few hours I recommend playing on 1 save mode where you have to live with the consequences of your choices. This is a game about telling an interesting story, a story without conflict and strife isn't as interesting.
The sheer amount of text in the tutorial legit gave me a headache after one and a half hours of playing. I spent more time reading the tutorial and the in-game wiki than actually playing the game. Btw the game is really not that complicated and I don't get why it 'behooves' so many walls of texts. Just make a small box 2 sentences max explaining the things in short, let me choose whatever i want to progress and lets get on with the game, shall we?
give me a rundown of the bogdanoffs
I love games that mix trade and economy with exploration of fascinating worlds, well-written story and rich lore. Vagrus is precisely that kind of game, and there's a lot here to love, from a roman-inspired, post-apo fantasy setting, to a ton of content in the form of quests, trading opportunities, companion stories and various factions you can align yourself with.
It is by no means a perfect game - in fact, I could probably find something to criticize in most of its areas. The trading is fun and takes into account a lot of variables, but the interface used is often unwieldy (for example, you can't check the last known prices in a settlement from the world map, you have to go to a separate menu; there's no clear indication what's produced in a town, only what is or isn't in demand). The personal combat is fun, but the menus are again not always intuitive, and while the character sprites look good, the scarce animations do not. Exploring the various possibilities and places in a city is fun and rich, but often requires a ton of clicking and remembering where certain things are. The writing is good, but rarely as captivating as in, say, Sunless Sea/Sky or A House of Many Doors (although these are more writing-focused games than Vargus, that's for sure). The characters have their personalities, but it's relatively easy to completely miss interactions with them or get stuck in some of their quests. The exploration is exciting, but extremely dangerous and I couldn't even find an indication on the map whether I have already been to a particular area of the wilderness and checked it for hidden stuff. The setting is fascinating, but it also seems quite static, trapped in a plot-enforced lockdown cutting it from the wider world and with no dynamic changes due to economy or the factions' conflicts, as far as I can tell.
And yet, all those nitpicks should not discourage you from trying out this game (or at least the free prologue). Most of them are not deal-breakers, but things I'd love the Devs to address in DLC/sequels/patches, and that will only happen if people buy, play and love the game!
Doesn't manage to create enjoyable mechanics around a wonderful idea. Shame.
Nice game
The grind is too real here, might as well be a second job. There is too much monotony. You are basically forced into being a boring caravan merchant, attempting to play the game as a mercenary or explorer is pointless as a starting role. Unless you like save scuming you will have a run of bad rolls and have to restart. Your companions are very weak early and anything you do will piss off someone to the point one will eventually leave. Leaving you with a more grind to get to the point you can go anywhere or do anything.
Elden Ring is a Hard Game because you have to take your time to learn mechanics. This is a hard game because everything just takes forever to do, you do the same thing over and over, and hope you don't get a few bad rolls. It needs a lot more balancing to be worth it. Unless you just don't have anything else productive to do, or love getting lost into the simplicity of repeating the same loop over and over again.
Not sure why Vagrus was not an option for best 'Story Rich' game in the upcoming game awards.
But this project definitely deserves that title, can't think of anything that comes close to it.
Not just in campaign story, but character building, world building, atmosphere, sense of urgency and accomplishment.
For intellectual fans of great reads and excellent world building, being able to put yourself in the story and being a part of the world, THIS IS IT. My only critique is that the party combat needs to flow allot smoother and better (speaking from pre-combat rework patch, planning to hop back in so hopefully that has made things better since)
Don't have much time IRL nowadays but absolutely love that moments I have eeking out an existence in the wasteland. In fact, I am still looking forward to all your upcoming content and season passes. Truly a masterpiece, a setting easily being able to immerse myself in the world and story. Reminds me of Dune but in medieval times and with magic.
Keep up the good work, huge fan!
This game is pretty hard. No shame in save-scumming. I just hope that more content that are shown in the map would be released soon. Would love to read all the lore and continuation of the trade beyond the Emperor's Road!
The best caravan simulator, the best RPG of recent years. 10/10
fun logistics story game in an apocaliptic world. hundreds of pages of lore. quests galore and amazing artwork. must play for strategic game players :)
Not sure why, but this really does it for me
This game has been a thrilling ride. You are a simple vagrus, not the chosen one. There are forces much greater than you, and you are just along for the ride and hope for the best. Yes gameplay wise this game is a HUGE fetch quest, but you're never bored along the way, Quests can take an unexpected turn, and the writing is good enough to allow your imagination run the course. Game system is carefully balanced and even with late game parties and equipments, and money no longer being an issue, wilderness survival still poses a challenge. But above all else, its' the mystery about the world around you, and about the characters you meet on the way that draws you in, and never lets go. This is truly a game for a wandering soul.
Pompous and bloviating. I do not mind walls of text, but if most of my time is spent reading them, most of yours needs to be spent rewriting them to high quality, not fiddling with abstruse game mechanics while the writing is the kind of stuff we wrote as a teenagers.
Honestly one of my fav games on Steam. Feels like an interactive fantasy novel with very satisfying gameplay mechanics and decision making - high risks, high rewards. Use a trading guide online early on to establish a lucrative route, and build your comitatus to greatness!
A game with deep immersive story, highly unbalanced character creation system, plenty of choices that shape your adventure, companions who are not blind followers but may disapprove and even left your service ... A world full with secrets waiting to be discovered, high roleplay value and these war lizards are cute indeed. I can roam its ways just for the next random event or to find another settlement. Be a dwarf, dark elf, orc or demon and discover everything by yourelf. It is a journey that I don`t want to end.
Total evaluation 9.6 from 10. I am waiting for the next DLC with great expectations. From such a game I could want only ... more, more and more of the same!
If you are not scared of reading and a punishing difficulty, Vagrus will reward with deeply unique and interesting world-building, story and gameplay. I love it!
Vagrus is a unique game. Yes, it does have a big focus on merchant/trading aspects but it is also heavily narrative/story-driven. The games has RPG choices where the effect of you making a decision will determine things from settlements being destroyed to losing the opportunities at certain companions. This narrative style makes the game unique but may be a turn-off for those who would like to read less. At first, Vagrus had a major learning curve. I found the best way to learn how to play was watching a few noob tutorials on Youtube since the brutality and RNG of the setting can quickly result in your demise (however, there is an option for easy play-through mode if you desire). Vagrus is a fascinating masterpiece but it certainly takes a bit more finessing to get good at it rather than your more standard trading games like Port Royale. The setting is unique and has depth.
Only negatives I'd say are the lack of a roadmap and the fact that not all of the map in-game has been unlocked (impassable terrains/barriers). This game needs more content and I think supporters like me want to see the world of Xeryn fully revealed!
If you love freedom of CHOICE, then this game is for you! This text based RPG is astounding with it's content and vocabulary liberties. Wanna be a mercenary, be one. Wanna be a trader by name and smuggler by action, then do it. Wanna be a slave trader and ruin lives. Then look no further. This game has it all when it comes to choice. Heck, you can even choose to be a drug runner if you wanted. I am doing a playthrough(shameless plug) on my channel and to be frank, I am loving every second of it. It has strengthen my reading skills and made me more comfortable reading aloud into the mic. I hope the devs get all the recognition they deserve because they tell you how it is and they are completely transparent. 10/10 would recommend.
This game is incredibly slow. Narrative driven, so if you like a lot of reading, great. I do enjoy that kind of game. However, it will get very repetitive of go here and grab this then return to location for the "main missions/secondary missions". You WILL NOT receive any direction to what it is exactly you're supposed to be doing. A lot of how you're going to navigate this game is by supply runs between towns and even then, you're probably not going to have enough supplies to make it there easily without your convoy being upset with you. Combat is fine enough if you have the manpower to stand against your foes but you won't get that manpower quickly enough and will die several times before you do, not to mention finding more companions than the two that they lead you to immediately. I would have given up on this game already but I kept hoping that something would happen that would engage a main quest of a kind which didn't really happen. The one point I thought it would, I finished the quest and I was still stuck in the same area and no idea how to investigate these 'whispering winds'. So, I have not gotten out of the initial area, they have you boxed in right away, still a lot of space, just boxed in. While it was entertaining with the reading and the great narrative, I can't say you will enjoy this game unless you enjoy the slow monotonous grind to get enough money, troops, and companions to do a damn thing with. Even then, the more people you have, the more supplies you need, and even with a ton of supplies, talking about 12 days worth, you're probably not going to make it to the next main city to replenish it. I would have liked some more automation without penalties and some direction. The developers state in the beginning that they designed it for minimal hand holding but there is none.
i made an excel spreadsheet to optimize my trading. 11/10 game
Very tough, and fun post-apocalyptic styled game. Leading a commitas (caravan) to trade, fight or explore your way through the desolate world. Incredibly immersive storyline that is rich in details--fantasy turn-based players will not be disappointed.
Tutorial broken - can't recommend until this is fixed.
Really wanted to like this game. Sadly the difficulty mixed with the static story interactions made playthroughs very repetitive. For the price though its worth trying out to see if it suits you. The writing and lore are top notch.
The tutorial is broken, the rules while fairly intuitive are yet to be explained and resolved without a whole bunch of trial and error. Not sure I will devote the time it will take to slog through the garbage, but there does seem to be some hidden (very hidden) gems here. Don't pay too much for this, but if you get it- be patient and very forgiving and you might enjoy some elements...
I love this game!
The stories are deep and often unexpected. There is a ton of writing in this game. I imagine you'd have to love reading to enjoy it.
There are two modes of combat, both are fun and challenging, though not extremely deep... outcomes are usually fairly predictable.
Learning the scouting system is, to me, a big key to success in this game but it's not explained well in game.
The idea of being some sort of RPG trader, explorer, and mercenary is a cool concept to me, it's been fun to play.
I hope for more dlc soon.
Vagrus is a mix between an econ sims like the Sunless games and old school crpgs like Baldur's Gate, and the blend is marvelous! It truly makes the world they created come alive, and keeps drawing me in to it even after 150 hrs and more!
I love this game. It's really hard, it's difficult to learn at first, and it has lots of reading. This game is something special, though. Rich worldbuilding and characters, satisfying gameplay loop, and great art/music.
Story rich and brutal. A trading/RPG hybrid, where all the characters and stories are hand-crafted, and you WILL die if you make stupid choices. Love it!
Amazing game with an even more amazing setting. Be prepared for A LOT of reading though. It's almost like a 50/50 choose-your-own-adventure book and a merchant's simulator, with a tiny bit of combat thrown into the mix. Great game for the right audience. Try out their free demo first and find out if it's up your alley :)
I'm honestly pretty disappointed with this game. As others have said, the demo is a poor intro to the game, as the rest of it is less story driven, far more trade focused and far more limited in scope than the demo seems to imply. The *vast* majority of the map is inaccessible to the player. In fact, there are areas of the demo that aren't even part of the main game, only about 25% of the map you see are actually playable areas and it seems like it's all set up with the intention of expanding it via DLC.
Beyond that, the game is surprisingly buggy, with the rest screen sometimes not going away, forcing you to quit out of the game to fix it and the game will often crash during load screens, happening 3 times in my 17 hours of gameplay. Combat also sometimes get laggy for no apparent reason, especially for a game with such low requirements and simple animations.
The trade aspect of the game is fun but it's limited by just how small the map is. The writing and setting of the game is interesting but it's so disappointing to hear about all these cools places and cultures only to find you don't have access to any of it.
As a Dungeon Master and as an Accountant this game should be right up my alley but after my time with the game I feel disappointed as both. As a world this feels like it has alot of the problems of a homebrew dnd campaign with a DM that got wayyyyyy to invested. As a economics simulator it doesn't have the depth nor enough rewards associated to make it anything more than a chore. I would never have reached the hours I did without enabling cheats to shorten how much busywork is involved in doing anything in this game.
Other reviews have touched on how simple the combat or that necessity of save scumming to avoid storyline dead ends. Of the things that stick out to me
The playable map is just a tiny fraction (felt like 10%) of the world map that you are presented with. You are told it is due to the ferocious winds and their are rumors of a sinister force at work. But they just don't have more game for you. The Devs have even come out saying not to expect more because free economic activity is suppressed in these regions.
So you end circling back and forth across the dust bowl of a playable game map doing what are mostly fetch quests for factions in order to unlock lore tidbits. It's ok the first 20 hours but you'll want to punch yourself just to feel something by time you're actually developed as a caravan. Especially as you hear about much more interesting stuff like undead emperors, demonic dimensional invaders, or the dragonlands that you can't visit.
The game promises alot but I felt never really delivered from Sand Wyrm story to the Heir Apparent, you just barely touch interesting parts of the world before you're sent back to haul obsidian across the waste for the 100th time left wondering if there was more to it or if the Devs just left it open ended because of budget constraints. It's a shallower experience because of it, even with the new expansions. All of this against an economics trading game where I'm mostly just helping people get different types of rock (salt/crystal) from the other side of the valley through clicking menus.
its really good, save often, save with notes. Great lore too, one of my favourites. Recommend the easy mode, I struggle on that still
tradewinds + grimdark fantasy rpg
