I discovered this in the library of pre-installed games on my C64 "Maxi". At first glance, I expected a simple Galaga clone. I was wrong. This is an excellent game that stands on it's own, and I have a great time playing it. Ignore my Steam play time, I've put many nights into blasting away baddies with this gem on the C64.
A new Galaga. Made right.
This is the so-called "new retro" game. This was released in 2017, but it's a C64 game. This means it's a new game, not from the C64 era, but at the same time, the real retro game, because it was made for an actual retro platform. Unlike many of today's imposter games with "retro" tags, which is basically an excuse for cheap graphics, which will suffer from FPS drops on some old cheap laptop more than capable of running any actual retro DOS game. Galencia isn't that, it's the real thing.
It's an interesting trend these days. There are also new NES and SEGA cartrige games.
I recommend this game, specially because it's playable in an actual Commodore 64.
It is great spiritual successor to the galaga series, and cracking c64 game that shows what the dusty old breadbox is capable of
A little history on the game. The Commodore 64 never got a true port of Galaga. The official port and ports other companies made for the system were sub-par. Then came Galencia in the later 2010s. True ports. Fun as hell and not sub-par. Every Galaga fan needs to give this game a go. It is a must.
I very much enjoy old-school space shooters because they remind me of my childhood. I've re-played many of them in emulators as adult, often resulting in disappointment because they were a lot more detailed and complex in my memory.
Galencia is like one of those old games that still looks and plays perfectly today. This game was created by talented people and is worth your time.
It's a fun, classic and very challenging little space shooter! This is a slightly changed version, adapted for Steam, from the Commodore 64.
I've hardly noticed any input lag at all, and the emulation seeems to run perfectly lag free, locked and sync'd at 50hz PAL, so everything moved about smooth as butter. All this is currently running on VICE 3.1 emulation.
The music sounds very nice, and isn't too repetitive, the graphics and colour pallette usage are well above average. :)
Highscores save automatically, can be reset too. You can enable and disable scanlines, too.
For the price a no brainer....Awesome retro playing game:)
Intro
So great to actually see a genuine C64 game and not the imitation retro that usually comes to steam so for that alone this game has credit. Galencia in it's purest form is a Galaxians variant and is very reminiscent of early C64 games from 1982 to 1984 period.
Graphics
The design and colour for the graphics are spot on for the C64 as the C64 was known for more blocky graphics and extended use of dull colours and lots of brown, sprites are well designed and defined and most gamers today don't realise that we didn't actually have many animated sprites but rather used movement as a way to trick you so it was an illusional effect and worked well and it's the same in Galencia too so that's great.
Sound
C64 was known for it's sound chip and Galencia does very well in this regard, some great sound effects which really add to the game and are of high quality and some fairly good tracks to go along with it and getting Soul Cross onto this project was a masterstroke and it shows.
Gameplay
Standard fair here so expect the like of Space Invaders, Galaxians or Galaga type gameplay and you will know what to expect but there are lots of levels and boss fights too so that's a nice touch.
Features
Features as you would expect would be limited, you can adjust some graphic styles and scanlines which is great, control method such as keyboard or joystick and game difficulty and a tournament mode which is all nice and we have a high score table as well so it does feel like a C64 game.
Summary
All in all a very good C64 game of Galaxians, sound and graphics which pay a really good homage to the early part of the C64's life and everything works well and moves fast too. Some might ask why i would buy this? For me it's a personal thing as i wrote some games and soundtracks for the C64 between 1984 and 1993 and i really love to see games from that period coming to steam when it's done right and Galencia hits the spot in the right way and it's only a few pennies to buy so it's a win.
Rating
As a game in it's own right it would be a 6 or 7 as it just works but as a C64 game it has to be an 8 out of 10 so a really good job from the team and hope they get some good sales to make even more C64 games. It's a hit so go give it a whirl as it's so easy to pick up and play for a few minutes.
Good old fashioned game play polished to near perfection. I've bought this game for my C64, I bought it on Itch and now I've bought it on Steam - it's that much fun!
Really pleased that this game has made it to steam. It's really decent Galaga clone that was coded on the C64. I've already got the rom for the C64 but i'm happy I can have a quick blast on my PC. I'd love some leaderboards.
Refunded a newly released £15 game yesterday and bought this instead. Impressed!
Sometimes, when the world is complex and overwhelming, you need something simple and pure to help restore some balance. Galencia, programmed and designed by Jason Aldred, is the perfect game for this. Fun, addictive and built on a classic formula, Galencia also holds plenty of surprises to keep things interesting. The art is attractive and sharp and the music and sound truly enhance the experience playing this great game that's full of exciting, perfectly-paced, blasting action.
The fact that this has all been written for the venerable C64 and is now available to play via Steam in a C64 emulator is itself a small miracle that you need to witness for yourself immediately.

Missed my chance to snatch a free key on Reddit, so just went ahead and bought it. Beautiful game, the love poured into it shows everywhere. The C64 had lots of games but no proper Galaga, so, even after all this time, this is really welcome and improves on the original.
Awesome old school C64 title. Gameplay is great, plays like Galaxian with plenty of fun enemy variations and challenge awaiting the pro player. Looks superb for the era and has a very satisfying soundtrack. I assume the game gets even better if you don't play like an idiot like me and get past the 8th level :P
Double ship is glorious. And so is releasing a new C64 game in 2018.
What a great blast-em-up!!! perfectly retro and perfectly challenging, that sprite-multiplexer must be a thing of beauty 'cos the bad guys are both outstanding and seemingly endless, great work!
