I'm a fan of Malfunction so I thought I'd check out Hectic Void. Unfortunately, there were many bugs:
- When launching the game, a bunch of errors pop up on the screen, saying something about dividing by zero. Unsure if these are real errors or part of the theme of the game.
- Sometimes, health just stops regenerating, and it can only be fixed by restarting the game
- Switching weapons doesn't work in story mode
- Character gets stuck on terrain randomly
And since you have to restart the entire game if you die, it becomes a monotonous, repetitive experience very quickly. I did like the graphics style though.
Yes, I know a total of 30 minutes was only played. But in those 30 minutes it became so repetitive and boring that I could not continue any longer. And for such a low graphic game, I experienced way too much lag especially when certain monsters grouped together and kept spamming their projectiles. This game was purchased under $2 and I understand the reason why.
This is a simple but fun and arcade-like game from a solo developer. It has some bugs but none of the ones I encountered were gamebreaking. It's essentially a challenging bullet-hell wave defense arena shooter. The first few levels are very easy but it ramps up. Gameplay consists of grabbing a new weapon upgrade each round then strafe-dodging your way through a swarm of a specific randomly selected mob type for 5 rounds then facing a boss. This repeats three times. Death means starting at the beginning.
Know what you're getting into before buying, of course. As this is a one-man dev there aren't any bells or whistles and it's very simple but the fundamentals are there.
I originally played Hectic Void back when it was just Hectic. I refunded it shortly after.
Then the creator got back to me, offered a free copy after he "rebooted" the game into Hectic Void.
The game has changed since then. Crashes are much much less frequent and when playing I encountered much less glitches than what I had back when I originally played the game. The movement has been cleaned up and feels much less sticky.
While it still has little problems, the creator SkullDust of BarlockGames is very open to trying and better polish the game and stomp out bugs that pop up. Its not perfect, but for the pricetag that the game goes for its worth the buy if you are interested in something that's mindless fun. Just try and let the creator know any bugs or problems you pick up so they can better the game down the line. Otherwise its unlikely that it will even get fixed.
If you don't know there is a problem, its near impossible to fix it, and with one dev for this game they can't know everything.
I have not played much of this game but i think it is really fun the shooting is nice even if the wepon sounds are not that good.I also dont like how red the screen gets when your on low health ti makes it very hard to see.I have aslo had problems with getting stuck and the game just not loading at all.
The controls are unresponsive. It's nearly impossible to effectively strafe as everytime you change directions your character will become unresponsive. Requiring you to stop trying to move in order to move again. You'll consistently get caught on objects in the enviroment. This, and the FOV are my primary complaints. Even on max FOV it still hurts my eyes and makes me feel like I'm way too close.
The actual gameplay is just too linear and bland to justify playing when you note those issues. The map design is simple, the enemies aren't challenging at all. Despite the price, I just can't really justify spending my money on this.
This game is like a fever dream, but fun. And you get to kill shit.
