Описание

Because We’re Here ~Mohnblume und Blauerose~ is a bittersweet otome dating sim in an unforgiving First World War-inspired setting. It's an episodic visual novel, released in four acts.

1915, Wesslinger National Calendar. The Great War rages on.

As neurotic Postal Corps volunteer Elfriede Rauss, you walk the trenches with the men of a lost generation. And amidst the chaos and brutality of the front lines, you encounter an obstacle that you are absolutely and categorically not prepared for: love.

However. Love can be a difficult thing to hold on to at the best of times. And these are not the best of times...

  • A Horror-Tinged Anti-War Epic - Act I sets in motion a twisting trench-opera of conflicted loyalties and life-changing decisions. This first act features 20 pieces of original CG art.

  • Romance a Diverse Array of Bachelors - A large and varied cast, spanning childhood friends, aristocrats, corporals and cowards. Act I introduces 11 main characters; Act II introduces an additional 8. (A total of 16 are available as love interests.)

  • Discover a Rich WW1-Inspired Setting - Investigate a grave turning point in the continent’s history as you journey across the towns and battlefronts of the First Lassallian War.

  • Master the Battle of Wits System - Argumentative boss battles that pit your emotional literacy and persuasive power against enemies and allies alike.

Estimated playthrough time for Act I (Never Such Innocence) is roughly 3 hours. (55k words.)
Act I is a significantly-updated version of the early WIP demos from 2015 and 2016.

An amazingly well written visual novel that I couldn't stop playing. I was immediately drawn into the story and became invested in the storyline (I already absolutely love Elfriede) Played through act 1 in around 2.5 hours and have immediately purchased act 2.

This is such a good VN... like maybe the best I've played. 100% worth the money, just be prepared for the irreparable emotional damage you'll get from playing this. Like seriously, don't play this if you aren't in a good place emotionally.

Fun graphic novel game. Very slow development, but a fun graphic novel w/romantic focuses with a focus on the great war. Its fun, and not terribly expensive. It also holds countless endings, though the final story is yet to be finished. Give love to the developer, and the commissioned artist. Development wise don't expect anything, its been quiet for a long time from what I can tell development wise.
Also like, don't flirt with POWs, thats just weird man :<

I just finished Act II and am still processing the rollercoaster of emotions and ideas I have been subjected to. Really amazing, and thoughtful, and truly unique, though I remain curious about the odd ahistoricity of some aspects of the storytelling and worldmaking...

All that aside... I can't recommend this enough. Just make sure you take breaks and give yourself a hug when it's over.

All of it hurt, but like the good way. Seriously could not enjoy a good and fluffy scene without thinking "but what's gonna go wrong now?" and that is pretty hard for me to feel that way. I super recommend this and I'm anticipating the further pain I'll go through in the rest of the acts.

Note: I played through Act 1 and dove straight on into the Act 2 DLC, so this is kind of a review for all of it so far.

I almost missed out on this game because realistic historical games don't typically appeal to me. But I was looking for something intense and immersive and heartbreaking and a friend recommended I give it a go.

Because We're Here is less sweeping historical romance and more character-driven war story with romantic interludes. The best part of the story has to be Elfriede. She's your main character and is compassionate, witty, driven-- I adore her. The rest of the characters are incredibly well-fleshed out with various motivations that sometimes clash.

most notably, this game breaks from traditional otome in a really interesting way. In most otome, when you're on a love interest's route, they're safe until you reach either a good end or a definitively bad one. This one doesn't provide you with that safety net. Meaning it can be pretty tough at times. It's incredibly effective.

It also has some intriguing in-game mechanics where you engage in"battles of wits" with other characters (or sometimes it's an internal struggle between Elfriede and herself!) to decide the outcome of key moments. Some of those moments are big with lives on the line and others are small and only really change how you interact with specific characters.

The background music is excellent and the soft art is lovely and, at times, jarring when depicting sometimes graphic moments of violence.

If this sounds the least bit appealing, I highly recommend giving it a try. At this cost, it's a steal.

https://www.sinicalanimenetwork.com/post/because-we-re-here-act-1-quick-thoughts

Because We're Here is an episodic World War I inspired otome visual novel with romance, slice of life and thriller elements. It features a female postal worker, Elfriede Rauss, who works in the small town of Boschberg. When her co-worker and all the young, healthy men in her town enlist in the Wesslinger army to fight a war with another powerful country, everything in her life changes.

Act 1 covers her daily life as a postal worker, getting to know all the young bachelors in town, and eventually joining them in the war as a messenger for Eighth Company. Act 2 covers the drama and intrigue among Eighth Company as the Wesslinger army and their Etgoesian allies are engaged in a war with Leyland and Levasseur with some backdoor diplomacy among the rank and file soldiers on both sides.

This visual novel is an indie production using the Renpy engine, so it has to rely on the plot and diversity of characters to bring out the storyline, and route variety to make up for the average classical background music and artwork. There is a published community guide to help players get all achievements in the least number of playthroughs.

Act 1 is a bit short and generic as it takes the time to introduce the first set of characters in the story (Around 3 hours), whereas Act 2 is considerably longer with plenty of suspense, thrills, addition and removal of some characters (Around 7 hours).

After obtaining all achievements in act 1 and 2, the romance feels rather rushed as many of the specific character routes only have a few scenes before the protagonist and the chosen character confess their feelings for each other. Still, the large variety of characters with different personalities and backgrounds to pursue a romance more than makes up for this part.

As for the drama and thriller aspects, it has good scriptwriting to keep the reader interested in reading the story because every character, including the protagonist, has at least a flaw or weakness somewhere. There are no Rambos or Mary Sues as the protagonist can be shot dead for failing at a battle of wits minigame, and some characters will also inevitably meet their end in an ongoing war in the trenches against an equally powerful and well-equipped army.

Defections, collusions, and getting to know certain individuals on the enemy side (also hinting at possible romance options in subsequent acts) are described in vivid detail in act 2. Therefore, I can recommend this game with the act 2 DLC anytime, and hope to see the next two acts released in future.

Because We're Here is an absolutely beautiful visual novel. The plot and character development are amazing. The dialogue is very diverse in terms of individual war philosophy, every character has their own philosophy and perspective regarding the war effort, and the protagonist, Elfriede Rauss, is written amazingly. I really appreciate the diverse characters and even the war terminology is really well written, including using old terms specific to World War I. The emotional impact of the plot is emphasized through knowing and talking to the characters for so long; and I can honestly say I felt a sense of loss and introspection as the war effort progressed in the novel.
Overall, this visual novel is so unique and well done. I highly recommend the novel to anyone interested in a war inspired visual novel.

First off, I definitely recommend this game. I just finished Act 1 and immediately bought Act 2. I think that Studio Elfriede has really created something worth playing here.

GENERAL THOUGHTS

  • This was surprisingly humorous so far. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of serious, tragic, and downright awful stuff. But throughout it all the dialogue and Elfriede's inner monologue often made me chuckle or at least smile.
  • Speaking of Elfriede's inner monologue, her little interjections, clarifications, and ramblings are a delight. It really gives a feeling for her thoughts and personality and makes it clear that she's not just a blank slate. Even when I had barely gotten into the game I already loved her character and that has persisted.
  • I both really really love and really really hate the fact that Elfriede’s choice of route will not change anyone’s fate. (I also appreciate how upfront the game is about that.) I love it because it’s realistic, it’s a fantastic story device to drive in the fact that anyone could die and Elfriede can’t make that much of a difference, and it creates a genuine emotional reaction in the player, not just the character. (Anxiety. That reaction is anxiety.) I hate it because of the aforementioned anxiety it’s giving me.
  • On that note, this game is a lot more stressful than I anticipated. I anticipated tragedy, and horror, and bad things, but I did not guess that it would genuinely stress me out this much. Definitely would not recommend as a relaxing, wind yourself down kind of game.
  • I don't like all of the characters, but I do feel that they're all realistic. A lot of the reason I feel that way is because I kind of dislike some of them. Don't get confused, this is definitely a pro, not a con, here. I really appreciate how clearly different they all are from one another.
  • There's also quite a lot of love interests just in Act 1 and apparently there will be more introduced in later acts. Based on certain events in Act 1 I fully believe it's because the game will brutally kill off a whole bunch more of them but it does give a whole lot of options.
  • I think the battle of wits system is really neat and clever, but I definitely recommend saving at the beginning of each. The coup de grace means that you can make it through the whole battle of wits perfectly and then screw it all up with one wrong answer on the last question. I consider that to be a good feature, but others might not.

UI

  • Overall, the UI hasn't caught my attention much, but I consider that a good thing. The text was all readable, the colors fit well, and the battle of wits screen especially seems well designed.
  • I like the way it grays out to show when Elfriede is thinking, not speaking. I think I prefer that to the standard italics that I normally see used.

Art

  • The art style of all of the sprites does generally make them look very young, which may or may not actually be a deliberate choice given the themes of the work. Regardless, it seems like an artistic choice about style and overall I very much like the sprites.
  • The CGs... Look I feel mean for saying it, but there’s something off about a lot of them, especially in the face and head proportions, that makes the characters look like children and it seems amateurish rather than a deliberate choice of style. Some of them are better or worse than others, but overall, that’s been my gut reaction to the majority.
  • Don't take this too much to heart though, everything else about the game has such quality that honestly a few less than perfect CGs can easily be looked past.

Sound Design

  • Amazing! I was not expecting the music and sound design to be this great, but from the very beginning of the game they blew me away.
  • [*] I especially want to mention the train noises. The train sounds just made me take out my earbuds because the click-clack sounded like it was coming from a distance about 4 feet back and to my right. It was actually a little uncanny.

In summary, buy the game! It's six bucks and well worth it. (I really like the choice to release later acts as DLC for the same price, allowing you to try Act 1 for cheap and then decide if you want to keep going. It means the price you pay directly scales with the amount of content you're getting.)

I just want to take a moment to praise what impressed me the most in this game, apart from its well-documented setting and refreshing writing style ( esp. the humour), I gotta say that it was the cast of characters that got me invested. And, God, I became so attached to them :''') that tears were shed during Act 2.

While the number of our love interests can be intimidating at first, don't fret! Quality was not sacrificed for quantity! In fact, each character is crafted to be different from one another ( be it their backgrounds, views, mind-sets and personality). They are all very carefully written, and each has his own spotlight moments integrated into the narrative. It gets so easy to love ( or love to hate) them!

I would recommend this game for the people looking for a vn that offers a Cathartic experience. You will laugh, cry and despair and in the end, you will still end up loving it <3. In short, this vn will make you feel!

This game waltzed into my house, ripped my heart out, crushed it right in front of me, patted me on the head, and left without even so much as a "how-do-you-do". And I was grateful.

I'm not kidding when I say there hasn't been a single piece of media (book, movie, show, or game) that has emotionally affected me as much as this game has. There were segments that I had to stop reading because I was too busy laughing at some witty wording, more than a few tears, and even parts where I sat back in slow dawning horror as pieces of a story puzzle came together. I'm honestly not someone who usually leaves reviews, but there was no way I could NOT review this game.

My biggest wish is that this game (and its creator) get the recognition they truly deserves and many more people have the chance to share in this experience.

If you are tired of WW2 or any other fantasy setting and want some interesting WW1 inspired war drama with a dash of romance then this is for you.

Because we're here is a very well written visual novel and captures the single lives as well as the general mood in a pre-war and post-war era pretty good. The visual novel starts out with introducing us to our main character Elfriede Rauss, who is a simple post woman. Lately she has become anxious. War is in the air. A prominent figure of her nation was assassinated outside of their territory. And thus her nation and others are starting to beat the war drums. This of course has an effect on her town and it's residents.

People are being enthusiastic. People who never experienced a war in their life-time want blood - some blood. After all isn't that all exciting and those uniforms look good. Honor, glory and brotherhood... or something like that. Then we have our sceptics, invalids and black sheep who dare to question the cause of war. And between all of them we have our main character. The great goodbye comes. The town is saying it's well wishes to those green young soldiers while they board the trains that bring them to the front.

Time passes by and there really is no progress on the front. This only spurns our post woman to see with her own eyes how it truly is and to search for her friends, so she finds some friendly face that lead her into the trenches. That's when everything goes wrong and she ends up seeing too much to turn around.

The focus here lies oblivious on the lives of the people who went to the front or are left behind. These characters are fleshed out extremely well and all come with their own take on the situation. I'm genuinely happy with how these characters evolve and just how diverse they are. Everyone has their own "truth", their own world view and the game isn't beating them down for having them.

Another personal bonus for me is that when people write about some historical "Germany" or alternate universe Germany they don't really get the names right. This one does. These names were popular around 1910-20.

And I should really put an emphasis on this being a war-drama. War is terrible and terrible things happen in war. PTSD, people dying or getting mutilated is a norm in the trenches.

Edit: Apparently the demo is outdated and not available anymore. So I have taken the link down.

This game is really interesting! The story is good, the characters feel real and the main character is charming.

I love how the caracters interact with each other, also I love how realistic they feel. You can love them, feel neutral to them, or even find them infuriating. I love it!
The story really grips you with the time period it takes place and the feel of being a postwoman during the Great War, having to wait for your childhood friend and the people you grew up with in the same town together from the war, it's very good! And yeah.
Although, despite that, I kinda have a little tiny bit of problem that I had to learn the ropes throughout all of the playthrough and the ending kind of irked me a tiny bit... especially when it concerns one of the characters by the end of the game.
But I'll still forgive it for the shock and the realism the story played out after that, though. Even though I felt a little cheated from having any choices during that part.

Other than that, I love this game. I can't wait for he next part! ^^

"All Quiet On Western Front", the otome version.

This is a visual novel about a young woman that lives in a country that resembles WWI Austro-Hungary or possibly Germany. Her nation is starting a war and almost all men from her town are excited to enlist and serve their country. Despite their original excitement, they will soon find out that war is a gruesome ordeal.

What I liked about this visual novel was that there is a huge number of characters and all of their have their own, unique personalities. It's rare to find an otome game with so many different male love interests. It's also rare to play a game with a WWI setting, especially an otome game. It would be nice to see more otome games like this, maybe also one with a WWII setting.

I noticed a few spelling errors here and there, which I'm sure are typos. I'm willing to forgive this, because overall, I found the game interesting. I have only played Act 1 so far, but it does look promising. Lets hope that the following Acts will be just as good or even better. There is certainly room for improvement here. For example, I hope they will make the Battle of Wits are bit more challenging. By "Battle of Wits" I mean a feature of the game where you debate the other characters and you can win or lose based on what you choose to say. However, so far these battles have been way too easy in my opinion. Lets hope they can make them a bit more interesting in the following Acts.

I've been following this project since it was announced back on tumblr around 3 years ago, and even though I've played the demo a multitude of times, I still would highly recommend this even though some amount (not all!) of Act 1 encompasses the content from the previous unpolished demo. Why?

A few reasons:
~Script has been noticably polished and has had a decent amount of dialogue added, especially for all characters not named August
~Far more CGs, redone CG art, and a big UI upgrade
~Music that far better reflects the tone and mood of the game
~Helping out a sole indie developer who has funneled his own money into this project instead of relying on crowdfunding. Buying Act 1 helps him fund his additional art assets for the later acts and will help them come out sooner because of it

BWH Act 1 is a departure from your typical otome, and a game I _highly_ recommend if you're tired of doormat heroines, school settings, and are ultimately tired of the overused tropes and archetypes that tend to be prevalent within the genre. This is a historical themed game set during a fictional rendition of WW1 and let me tell you, it really doesn't hold back any punches when it comes to the horrible realities of war. The game starts light-hearted and optimistic enough, but soon the reality and gravity of the situation these characters are in becomes horribly apparent. While there is a certain amount of grim charm to the game as it progresses, it never gets so angsty and dark as to be devoid of humor or charm (there's some great dark humor in here!) and has a nice side dash of fun sarcasm thanks to our heroine Elfriede and her very amusing inner dialogues.

The characters are all highly varied with their own unique personalities, quirks and backgrounds. From a dandy eccentric 'noble' man of a small town, to a former boxer turned conscientious objector who refuses to fight, there's a plethora of characters to love. Even within Act 1 you can see some great character development of some of the earlier characters you meet taking place, and I really can't wait to see how everything progresses.

(I'm not delving too far into the romantic aspects in this review because by the time Act 1 ends we only get to see a small bit of it starting to emerge, but it does do a good job of sweetly setting up the stage between Elfriede and her guy of choice for futher acts in that regard. One neat thing is that even if you're on a certain character's route, you aren't locked in to that choice and can switch around as you please.)

In a hand of a less skilled writer, some of the darker themes and character developments in the game could be easily fumbled, but honestly the writing in BWH is some of the best writing I've seen in an indie/otome release. I'd go into more description of the story, but there are some plot and character elements I feel would be ruined if I were to do so (please go in blind if you can!). Everyone comes off easily believable, with strong individual character voices as well as being descriptive but not overly to the point of tedium. The script and story so far are definitely the highlights and my favorite part of the game for sure.

Lastly, the sprite art I find is very good but for me perhaps the only thing I can negatively say about the game is that I feel the CG art at times doesn't quite mesh well with the original sprite art and tone of the game. Some of the later ones especially feel like they were a bit rushed and maybe aren't as polished as they should be. The background art is simple and dreary, which fits the tone of the game, but could have been a bit more elaborate and detailed in my opinion.

The worst part, however, is having to wait for Act 2, because I'm so impatient and want it so badly lol. I can't wait to meet the additional characters that are going to be turning up in Act 2, as well as learn about what happens to some of the other already introduced characters that were left in rather...dire situations by the end of Act 1.

I've played so many games in the genre, both Japanese imports, retail otoges and other OELVNs and I have to say this one is one of my favorites, even only as far as the first act. It's highly worth your time and money for something so unique, refreshing, and so incredibly well-written, so please give it a chance so we can see more types of these games released :)

I first encountered this visual novel a day before it was released, and immediately I was excited – I love historical settings, and WWI doesn’t get nearly enough media attention, and the characters looked very varied and setting-appropriate, so I had high hopes. Having played the first act now, I can say that the VN delivered everything I wanted and more.

Firstly, this is a very well-researched story. Everything from the details of the trenches to the many different wartime roles that were available to the different kinds of reactions people had to the war – and how they changed over time – are replicated here perfectly. But it doesn’t feel either overwhelming or confusing – apart from a brief explanation of the political history of the war early on, there’s no exposition, instead allowing the reader to familiarise themselves with the world by watching it unfold. It’s worth noting now that this story isn’t technically based on the real WWI – the countries and their geography are different, with some interesting results – but if you want something that captures the spirit of WWI in a very personal, in-the-trenches way, I can’t fault it.

The art also contributes to the feel of it. While I actually wasn’t super fond of the CG art, the sprites are very well-drawn and expressive, and fit very well into the setting despite not being hyper realistic. And the music is perfect – from the very first scene, the usage of traditional classical music perfectly expresses the dramatic moment, and other scenes continue, whether it’s upbeat folk music for the scene where everyone is just so darn excited to sign up to go to war, or sour dirges for when things inevitably go to shit.

And as I’d hoped, the characters are all very different, reflecting a broad range of attitudes towards the war, and towards each other. You have the eager young lad determined to prove himself a hero, the draft-dodger who is castigated by the townspeople, the lout who just wants to beat some heads of the other side… but they don’t end there in those boxes, either. Even over Act I, we see very quickly how the war affects people, sometimes in drastic ways. Things change, and in a very real way.

The romantic system is also worth a note. It’s kind of a mix of the traditional ‘choose dialogue options your character will like’ system and the more modern ‘just straight-up pick the person you want to date’ option, but with a very unique twist – once you pick a character to get on their route, you’re not locked in. You can totally change to get onto someone else’s route later, if you decide you like them better. Which is good, because there’s going to be even more love interests introduced in Act II (beyond the 10 already available!!). I really like this idea, allowing for more flexibility over your route choices, while still making your dialogue options feel like they matter (as you can’t get on someone’s route if they don’t really like you much).

Then there’s the Battle of Wits system – interestingly for a war game, the real gameplay is actually in debates, where you will have to choose the most persuasive or most accurate response in order to win an argument. But it does actually make sense in such a thoughtful vn, set in a time when people were starting to drastically change how they talked and felt about war. And it works well – both times it comes up in Act I, it makes a lot of sense how it would have an impact, and the choices were reasonable if you thought about it. (For what it’s worth, I got a perfect score… except on the coup de grace of the Elfriede vs Elfriede match. Which was instantly reloaded, because I myself probably would’ve been a draft dodger, given my cowardice :P)

But I’ve been dancing around the real reason this VN left such an impression on me. WWI wasn’t like any war that came before it, or really any after it. People really went in thinking it’d be a gallant, noble affair, over by Christmas, but it was the opposite in every possible way. It was dreary and dark and cold and depressing, unartistic and lifeless. And that truth hovers in the background during the first half of the story, through Elfriede’s cautiousness and dramatic irony, but when the second half comes around, it becomes clear that this game is not fucking around. The author understands this war EXACTLY, and through her writing, manages to communicate every bit of the hopelessness and tedium of it. But that’s not left for only the characters to experience. Be warned: characters will be injured, and maybe even die – and maybe even your favourite. In recent years, I’ve become skeptical of the writing choice to give character’s stories an early and unexpected end for shock value, but this is the perfect setting for it, aligning fully with the tone and themes of the setting and so subverting the expectations of a romance game to tell a true, realistic story. Because this stuff did happen. If you don’t think you could deal with that, knowing that your love interest is not safe, then this isn’t the game for you. But if you want a story that will punch you in the gut and deliver something you probably haven’t seen before, please do play it.

I should at least mention the few things I didn’t like. As I said, I found the CG art weirdly amateurish compared to the sprites, in a way borderline inappropriate for the setting. As this is Act I, not all of the characters get much attention – for a couple, it’s hard to see how Elfriede could have developed any positive feelings for them by the time it comes to pick a route, but that’s just a structural problem. And I could see others finding this Act too short for the price point, but as someone who measures stories more by impact than time taken, I am completely satisfied.

In short: this is a very well researched and written story with a wide variety of interesting characters well developed, which captures an atmosphere that isn’t quite like anything I’ve ever seen before. It is dark – the creator doesn’t consider it a borderline horror game for no reason – but it’s not so merely for shock or edginess points. These are events that really happened, for real reasons, and every sentence of the story exudes that. And that means that, even in between the awfulness and misery and tedium, there was also friendship, and laughter, and love. To what extent the latter will win out over the worst of the war will only be revealed over Acts II to IV, and I for one will be there on day one.

I was drawn to this game because its concept intrigued me: - romances against the ominous backdrop of World War I (or something very like it). I actually wasn’t sure how well the elements would sit together, but I was intrigued to find out. When I got to play it, I was blown away by how engaging and human it was.

The war is very new, and very exciting to the townsfolk. But we know (and our character Elfriede suspects) that it’s going to be bigger and more terrible than anyone can take. The story and the relationships grow and reel under the conflict’s lengthening shadow. It’s what they used to call an intimate epic.

I’m new at romance-based games, and before I played it I was worried the story would do too much to make the characters alluring at the expense of drama. I couldn’t have been more wrong! The numerous characters we meet are immensely human. Conflicts between them reveal their ugliness, before the grim camaraderie of war binds them together, letting them reveal a greater complexity, and new kinds of weakness. Characters who I reviled at the start earned my sympathy, and I found I cared immensely for just about everybody.

The game kept me up late at night, and I wanted to press on. I woke early, hungry to play more. The only frustration was that it ended when it did. I wanted Act II! But wars are long, and require a tense sort of patience.

It seemed a small pity that we didn’t see more choice and consequence in the game, as that largely came towards the end of the act - but again, that’s wholly suitable for this setting: we’re swept up in the war, and impotent to hold our friends back, or save the doomed youth. This is a perfect synthesis of setting and story, and I must sit tight and hope for more. Thankfully the wait, if not the war, ought to be over by Christmas.

Great. Amazing. Wonderful.

I've kind of distanced myself from otome games as of late as I've grown very tired of all the same boring, archetypal characters; the same flat settings and slice of life storylines; the same bland MCs completely void of a personality. But this game....THIS is one of the few that I'm willing to put actual money towards and actively support, since I think it's just that good. It really does stand out from every other otome game out there, what with it being set in an actual war, and not shying away from the horrible realities that come with that. The writing is also incredibly articulate and well-done--at various points throughout the game I had to google the definitions for certain words I didn't know, which I LOVE. And, most importantly, as many characters as there are, they all manage to be interesting, fleshed-out, and realistic, which is SUCH a rarity in this genre!!!! Even the MC is vibrant and humorous and has a personality of her own, but it isn't to the point of being overbearing, either. I truly cannot gush over this game enough.

As other reviewers have pointed out, it's true that this final version of Act I is quite similar to the demo version--but if you never played it, you wouldn't know the difference. I still bought it anyways, despite playing the demo, since 1) it has been years since then, and I was interested in replaying the polished version, and 2) it is VERY important that we support this release if we want the rest of the game to come out. If you played the demo, and have any interest whatsoever in playing Act 2, I urge you to buy this game and support Studio Elfriede. Or, if you never played the demo and are new to this series, make the plunge!!!! Delve into this war-torn world filled with a distinct and engaging cast and story. You will not regret it!!

Tl;dr if you are looking for a typical, tropey, anime dating game with more content than substance (i.e. quantity over quality), move along. If you are looking for an entertaining and boldly dark story that has depth, realism, and believable romances, this game is for you.

(Note: my playtime might be registered as 5 minutes, but I completed the whole story in offline mode. Reading through everything took me about 2 and a half hours.)

A well-written, well-researched, and touching visual novel set in a fictionalised version of World War I.
Because We're Here bills itself as an otome game, but there isn't too much romance - at least, not in the first instalment. There is, however, a very large cast of well-designed and nicely-drawn male characters with diverse personalities for the heroine to interact with, and you get a few sweet scenes with them depending on your choices (of which there are quite a lot).

It's an indie VN, but it was obviously put together with love and affection. The writing is very polished, and though it covers some pretty grim subject matters it's filled with deadpan/sarcastic humour that stops it being too depressing. The writing reminds me a lot of the Blackadder comedy series, which was probably intentional.
The characters are very varied, and they all have their own philosophies on the war: some are very gung-ho about the prospect of murdering their enemies, others want to fight for the prestige/social status, and others want to be left out of it altogether. All these different responses to the war are explored, and there's some thought-provoking stuff in here.
The character art is very soft and subdued, which suits the maudlin setting, and it's anime influenced, but not so anime as to be unfitting. I think it's impressive that, with such a huge cast of characters, everybody looks distinct and unique.
The backgrounds lack detail and are pretty blurry, but the sprites are the main focus anyway, and they're serviceable.

Honestly, the worst part of this story is that I want to know what happens next...! Part one isn't too long, and feels more like an introductory prologue to a wider epic than a stand-alone story. It also ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Fortunately, after checking the developer's tumblr, it looks like the second part is already written, and they're waiting on art assets, so if the first 'episode' sells well and gets good reviews, it should be out much quicker.

I'm hoping that more people give this story a shot, and write positive things about it, so I can read the rest...!
It seems like later chapters will include new characters who offer yet more alternate viewpoints on the war, such as 'enemy' soldiers, so it'll be nice seeing more dimensions to the conflict and how everything unfolds~

Been looking forward to this game for years and it did not disappoint. If you have been following it for a while Act 1 does seem very familiar (a big chunk of it is similar to a beta demo that was available a while ago) but there's enough newness and freshness in the art and story that I was paying a lot more attention than I had previously.

For those unfamiliar with the game/who haven't been following it for years:
This story takes placed in a fictionalized universe and its parallels to WW1 are quite astute and capture WW1 better than many other stories. The characters are varied and phenomenly interesting -- I laugh, I cry, I shake my head at the comments they make. Elfriede is one of my favorite MCs that I've ever played as (visual novels and adventure games alike) because she feels so very real and actually so very ordinary, which only makes her own adventure into the trenches more powerful.

All in all, I am supremely looking forward to Act 2. Can't wait to see where the next leg of the war takes everyone (I'm sure no place great since it's uh... /war/ but still can't wait!).

While I have been waiting anxiously for this game to come out for years due to its unique storyline and well though out characters, I can't help but be really disappointed with Act I. The bulk of the game is essentially the free demo and maybe 30 minutes play time after that with an extremely short scene (around 5 minutes at best for each) with your selected romantic interest at the end. While I was really upset with the shortness of Act I, I'm still hopeful that Act II will have more CGs and actualy scenes.

This is not to say that the game is not good because it truly is. I just feel really upset with how little content this game has (even if the price is low).
