if you like stealth games this is a no-brainer, and if you don't this is still a no-brainer
Now this is a phenomenal stealth game. Not quite the best, but very fun.
*Some spoilers ahead*
I think some of this game's best parts are both the art style and the power fantasy. The visuals and presentation are absolutely incredible (which Klei are always known for), and the sheer amount of things you can do with all of your tools, skills, and the "paths" (think of them like classes or play-styles) only compound the amount of ways you can approach most any situation and can even fully recontextualize how you complete each mission (i.e., playing a mission using The Path of the Hunter vs The Path of Silence).
I think my only "complaint" was with the game's story; it's not terrible by any means, but it could've been so much more interesting. But even with that in mind, I still liked most of the twists and the main character's journey. I think one of the most interesting twists is when you first begin to suspect Ora after you and her return from your "final" mission (though there are definitely hints where most people will see Ora in certain interactions and go "...wait a minute"). The twists in this game's story were not super impactful, but at least helped it feel just a pinch more interesting. I'm a bit conflicted on how to feel with the game's two endings, but I respect the dev's goal in keeping the two choices a bit vague and not a black and white "good" vs "bad" ending.
If you're looking for a really fun, relatively short stealth game, this is it (and it's incredible).
Why do I suck so much at this game? I swear I tried a lot but goddamn I just can't get past the first phases it's frustrating. Beautiful art design by Klei, but jfc thank god they focused on Don't Starve and surviving games.
This remaster is amazing, I mean what more can you say, perfectly done, playability, prefect mix of game play and blood. Just a wonderful game I intend on playing over and over.

I’ve played mark of the ninja few years ago on my Mac and recently I’ve bought this remaster version to play it on the steam deck oled and I must say that it’s always amazing. Beautiful to see and funny to play, not very long but it is worth the fee money it costs.

There is so many different ways to play, you can try to complete without anyone ever knowing you're here or you can kill everyone in so many different ways or you can make them kill each other and so on.
The map design is made so well to have multiple approaches and you can easily complete them without killing anyone or you can kill them all.
Outfits which give you different abilities and so many tools to work with.
I can't recommend this game enough!
this game is fucking amazing, i cant recomend this enough, it has a wonderful level of balanced challenge and almost never feels unfair. there are a few points it can feel that way but more often than not, its you not the game and its just how you approaced things or the gear you picked. even in NG+ it can have challenge just...well not as much given a few of the end game abilities you can get, espeically with the bits of extra content that werent in the original game
UPDATE: A couple weeks later i decided to look up a solution and i got the fix. Needed to activate proton experimental in game properties. Have no idea what it did but the game doesnt crash anymore.
Very fun stealth game, gives me exactly whats advertised. I can kill and stealth as much as i like, theres a good amount of options to sneak around and take out enemies. I like the simple level design, not confusing at all. Theres VERY frequent checkpoint for stealth nerds like me who want that +400 silent assassination on every single enemy on the map, but die or get caught often and want to restart. (You're not forced to restart in most areas, i just choose to reload checkpoints to perfect my stealth. I love the character mobility and how close i can get to enemies without getting caught. I like that ledge kills are a thing (silent kill and throw enemy off ledge), you can also assassinate from little tunnels, cut lights, use enemy bodies to cancel laser alarms. Wanted to change my review to positive because the game deserves it now that i got it work on my steam deck. I'll update the review again when i finish the game. Highly recommend so far i plan on finishing all the way through

If you enjoy platforming and stealth this is a no-brainer. It often comes on sales and is very well worth it.
There's an issue you can get where your stealth kill-input don't get recognised and you instead just punch the enemy. If you get this, make sure you try another refresh rate in the settings. For me the game works perfect at 60hz or 165hz but not at 144hz.

Wonderful animations and a mixture of classic and novel ideas blended into something that is easy to enjoy. There are a multiple ways to get around obstacles and enemies and you can choose between stealth and brute at will. You get tools, skills, upgrades, and awards to get you motivated on your journey.

An amazing game of its genre. One of my favorites if not the favorite game, its just perfect. All of its components work in an amazing dance, the music and ambient makes you feel like the character, always to remain in the shadows and use the stealth to your advantage. The mechanics have a good variety to it, offering you multiple ways to play the game. The story is heart touching, really catching you in the flow of it, keeping you in trance the whole game. A masterpiece everyone should give a try.

Have you ever wondered if a side scrolling stealth game was actually possible? The simple answer is, Yes! This title is one of the few that I have actually gotten every single achievement. I've played it trying as many of the costumes and load out combinations as I could try. I've completed a pacifist run. I've killed every single enemy in a run. You can play this game many different ways and each will give you varying degrees of difficulty. This is a fun title that actually runs on modern stuff since the original game doesn't work well past Windows 8.

Beautiful artstyle, satisfying movement and stealth mechanics, 2D perspective, awesome level design + level-specific color palette, a straightforward and easy to complete achievement list, different gadgets, abilities and costumes that change the dynamic of the game, tons of replayability... what else do you need / want? This is a perfect indie game and Klei Entertainment is such a based studio. I simply love their art and ideas, they're incredibly talented people.
I first picked this game up on a sale in 2017, had little to no knowledge of it, but instantly fell in love with the whole concept. Finished it in a few days and this was actually one of my first games on Steam on which I did an achievement hunt. When I got the Remaster for free a while back I knew I had to do the 100% again lol.
Fun fact: In 6th grade I was obsessed with ninjas lmao, so yeah, this game is every autistic kid's dream. Just play it.

One of my absolute favorite games of all times. A good game has a moving story, a great gameplay, some good ambient music and so much more. This game seriously had me crying near the end, huddled in a grate, listening to the music and the ambient rain and just letting the events play in my mind before I move forward. This game made me feel, made me think, and I love it.
If you want some more bojective detail, it has plenty of the right mechanics to get your head in gameplay and keep you both challenged and focused, the level design makes you check around the corners properly and the tools and weapons can be so versatile if you try.
Honestly my favorite game, the absolute goat. May not be for everyone but for the fans of plataforms and stealth is an absolute masterpiece.
If you love stealth games, you'll this game. If you enjoy games as well then you'll love it. Even well. Never knew a stealth game in platformer style could be that fun. Also it allows you to mostly play your way. If you want though it out and only kill your targets then you can, though it's almost impossible hard. If you want to kill every single enemy then you can as well, though it's pretty hard as well as some are place and buffed in a way that makes it not the easiest task to kill them. Yet nothing is over buff, it's all about being smart. Or you can just find a middle balance that you prefer to play.
And the story is pretty good as well. Yet if you love ninja games but don't enjoy stealth then this isn't for you. Yet if stealth is your thing, this is on Splinter Cell\Tomb Raider stealth level good.

Sick-ass stealth game, though it kind of meanders towards the end
I always loved Klei's Flash-ass visual style but never got around to giving their games much of a shot, beyond playing DST for like an hour or two and then dropping it like a bag of rocks.
But I played Aragami recently and it had me in a mood for stealth games which reminded me this was on my to-play list, so I finally got around to it.
I wanna get one thing out of the way first: The gameplay of this game is goddamn stellar.
The controls are super fast, responsive, and everything feels extremely smooth to control.
All the important information you need like noise ranges and enemy vision is perfectly laid out to you visually.
Your mobility is super fast, and you have plenty of extra actions to add to that, like wallclimbing, gliding, a grappling hook, and all sorts of weird interconnecting states between these actions that make them feel pretty much seamless to go between.
Enemies feel like they're at the perfect sweet spot of stealth game AI, too. Where they have just the right amount of intelligence to present some kind of challenge (they react to noise, they use their flashlights, they send each other to check out sources of noise one at a time so they can stay behind and keep guard before going to check if they don't come back, they make sure to illuminate the entire area they're lured to once they get there just to try and find you, they dodge roll past your attacks once they engage in combat if they do find you).
But still being just predictable enough to make all of it manageable.
You can analyze their default movement patterns and make out the perfect timing to sneak past, just like you can also manipulate them by generating noise on purpose, breaking lamps, and other such attention-calling things.
You can also terrify them which is a mechanic I'm surprised more games of this type haven't tried; you can drop a guard's dead body onto another from above, or hang them from grapple points for them to see, and they'll pretty much completely lose their composure, start firing at the air (potentially taking out other guards), and be COMPLETELY vulnerable to stealth kills even if you run straight into their vision while they're scared. It's SUPER fun manipulating the guards to get through tough crowded spots.
It might take a little bit to get used to, but by the end of the game you're gonna be masterfully zipping around the levels with all your crazy mobility options, scouting out any enemies, and within seconds having a rough idea of how you can manipulate them to get through. SUPER fun stuff.
As seems to be Klei tradition the visuals are sick, too. It's very obviously flash-animated, so you're gonna notice the tweens and whatnot, but it heavily reminds me of mid-to-late 2000s animated shows from the art direction and character designs. Never really manages to feel "cheap" or "puppetted" either, which is a plus.
The music is kind of... uh, there? It's perfectly suited to what the game is, but it's mainly atmospheric and in the background. Nothing you're gonna remember, though the general sound design does very much enhance the gameplay, between your own noise and that of the enemies, muffled behind walls and surfaces where applicable, on top of the ambience sound perfectly fitting to each area.
Anyway uh. Gripes.
The last two levels, even on replaying them on NG+ knowing what was coming up and not having to scour for collectibles, are kind of a DRAG.
They introduce the most annoying enemies in the game which just negate a lot of your options and cannot be directly stealth killed at all, and they remove several of your mechanics from the equation entirely through other means. Very long, too, with one of them having a massive sprawling map full of twists and turns that's easily going to take over an hour your first time through, even more if you're like me trying to take the chance to explore for collectibles. Which you need for upgrades.
That and, the story.
It has neat IDEAS, mind you! I like the plot point of taking a blood pact to put a demon tattoo on yourself that gives you basically super ninja powers, using those powers to take down a mafia that's killing your clan, and then it turning out that your clan double-crossed you and was just using you as a sacrificial guinea pig to steal from that mafia so they could get fancy high tech guns and "modernize the clan into the 21st century". Which is why the mafia was killing the clan to begin with, trying to steal from them.
It's SUPER funny that the clan just straight up wants to gear the fuck up and start packing heat and become gun ninjas.
And that you pretty much go "yeah no i'm not dying for that, I'm gonna beat some sense into all of you".
The section near the end is super cool too, as the hallucinations from the demon tattoo pact start to set in, and ESPECIALLY how the ninja lady that's been accompanying you the entire game turns out to be the biggest hallucination of all, goading you along as you go mad.
But then the story and game as a whole just go out with a wet fart. They don't explore the ideas much beyond that basic setup, you do not get much character interaction beyond what's roughly necessary to advance the plot, a good portion of the game kinda feels like it's going through the motions, and then it just ends unceremoniously after two really annoying levels.
Again, I LOVE the visual style of the ending sequence! How you're going through everything that happened on your journey, reflecting on it, and heading to the end where you choose whether to kill the clan leader or yourself!
But then your choice boils down to...
-Kill the clan leader, get an admittedly cool brief animation of your character flying away as a demon, and then the game ends with no further dialogue or explanation of what happens to the clan
-Kill yourself, get an uncomfortably long sequence of killing yourself, drop dead (along with hallucination ninja lady), and then the game ends with no further dialogue or explanation of what happens to the clan
It just ROLLS CREDITS. Just like that.
And like... Idunno, maybe my expectations are just too high. I'm very picky with game stories, and Katana Zero had a similar (if more streamlined) gameplay format while accompanying it with an INSANELY good story.
But I really did not jive with this game's plot beyond the very start of it and appreciating the cool setpieces along the way. Kinda disappointed in that.
Anyway this is still a pretty fun game overall, I don't think the story is very good but the gameplay and visual style are EXCELLENT and that alone probably makes it worth a try, especially with how cheap it is.

Most achievements are pretty easy if you go out of your way to get them. Ones like getting all the seals and scrolls are a bit more tedious and will require at least 2 playthroughs (with a possible 3rd for new game+).

Overall opinion
I have mixed feelings about this game. On one side, it feels very fluent and fun to play. But on the other it's like fighting your keyboard/controller rather than the enemies.
The controls are very simple and easy to understand. The main downside of that is the complexity of the game, putting 5 functions on the same button. This can often cause unintended deaths and alarms going off. The grappling hook can also be a pain to use as it doesn't always lock on to the most logical target, sometimes sending you straight into a laser.
The AI in itself feels fairly basic... Enemies will trigger an alarm if they find a body, see you too clearly, or if you fail at executing them. The main mechanics leading to being spotted are standing in a form of light, or making too much noise near an enemy. Whilst in itself fine, enemies will oftentimes turn around last second, with absolutely 0 indication, instantly alarming everyone. Late game enemies are pretty much unkillable as they will know immediately if you get within melee distance, and will actively avoid traps. Add to this they all wield guns and can end you within 2 shots, and you will see where the frustration can come from...
The traps are mostly lasers, motion sensors, poison gas, and dart shooters. Whilst a cool concept on the surface, these get spammed a ton in the late game and just become irritating as the barely visible wire that's randomly in a corridor will kill you with no warning. Often being a very boring restart at checkpoint, not really adding much to the game in my opinion.
The gameplay changes slightly every few levels, but essentially stays the same. Stealth, kill some guards, stealth some more... The occasional "puzzle" to spice things up, and you've basically played the entire game.
The awfully bare bones story also really doesn't help as the plot is about as deep as a puddle.
As a last complaint, I have to mention the price of this "remaster" is incredibly high for what it actually adds. Being just a bare minimum graphics touch up, and (I believe) adding the dlc into the base game. - This at 3 bucks more than the now delisted original.
For the good:
The movement feels fluent and (mostly) reliable when the controls don't fight you, and you can go incredibly fast if you know the layout of a level.
There's a ton of traps to make use of, and different outfits to add to it. Every trap works differently, and being limited to 2 of them adds a good layer of complexity. Outfits all have good and bad perks, which makes them distinct and solid in their own path.
The ninja designs also look nice in my opinion, adding contrast to the other colors in the game.
tldr;
Starts fun, gets boring.
-Basically no difference from the original
Should you buy it?
I want to say no. Unless it's on a massive sale (I got this for a few bucks.)

A solid stealth game to play using a controller. I really liked the art style and how character vision range is implemented. You unlock hard mode when you complete the game, letting you keep all gear, but taking away hints and vision in directions you are not looking.
I already completed stage 1, 2 and 3. So far, I am enjoying this masterpiece so far! Gorgeous handdrawn art style, amazing ninja like music and fun stealth combo gameplay!

It's like slipping into a well-tailored suit, the fabric smooth against your skin as you glide through levels, each one a meticulously crafted puzzle. The animations are pure poetry in motion, and the satisfying thunk of a silent takedown is music to the ears. this game isn't just about stealth; it's about feeling like a true ninja; a master of shadows.

best 2d ninja game on the market
Like this game because it is enjoyable, animation is cool, cut scene is great and best thing is there's no in app purchase. I paid up-front so I want to enjoy the game.
Twelve years ago, I bought and finished Mark of the Ninja: what a great game! Then it was remastered in 2018 with achievements and all that good stuff. But I did not feel like replaying it again... until recently when playing Gunpoint (another oldies) reminds me of Mark of the Ninja. And I was not disappointed: when you can play a game, 12 years later, with the same lever of fun, pleasure and satisfaction, you know this is a great game! And Mark of the Ninja is among these few.

My favourite game of this genre so far. It's not too long to get boring and not too short to waste potential. Enjoyed it every evening after a non-challenging work day :)
