It's a KEMCO game all right. Played this on the Switch to the end and it was pretty ok on there. I really did like the characters and there sad stories but now after 5 years and coming back to play it again it's the same old RPG Maker crap. The story and characters are great but the gameplay is just boring and barely gets you excited at all while playing. Man ehat was I thinking back then while playing this?

Fernz Gate is prolific JRPG (Japanese role-playing game) developer Exe Create Inc. and publisher KEMCO's 9th release on Steam. It is an isekai (another world) JRPG where four people, Alex, Toril, Lita, and Kodan are magically brought to the world of Fernland along with many other people from different worlds.
Alex realizes this new world is being ruled by an overlord who has seized power from a benevolent goddess. With his newfound companions and many other outworlders, they embark on a quest to oppose the overlord. Along the way, Alex and his companions will have periodic flashbacks of their past. Alex's party will also help a few non-player characters as they complete optional side quests.
This game has the usual grinding fare, a main quest, and plenty of side quests that are common in JRPGs, as well as dialogue choices. The dialogue choices determine whether each character can improve in their ability to reach certain treasure-filled areas in dungeons, offers a chance to decline the optional side quest, or to simply back out and prepare for a difficult boss battle ahead.
Navigating through dungeons is also simple and easy as many of the passages lead to dead-ends or rejoins a passageway not too far off. Every dungeon also has a convenient exit option to fast-travel from any part of a dungeon to the exit.
Having played another JRPG by Exe Create Inc. and KEMCO, Dragon Sinker, Fernz Gate is an improvement by having nice anime artwork sprites for the main characters in the game. Although the background music can still be limited and repetitive considering that a large part of the game involves grinding for levels and various rare items, they are no longer of the beeping kind based on classic 8-bit retro games.
During certain critical moments in the story, the game's main theme music actually brings out Alex's character well as he strives to overcome his fears and earn the support from the people around him.
Among the cons, the game still suffers from monsters that are of the cookie-cutter variety, very repetitive background music, a lot of grinding, and some minor translation errors here and there. Some players have also reported that the combat segment is too easy and overpowered.
Agreeably, the mechanics of the game is simplified to the extent that players can simply spam the most powerful skill to instantly win most encounters including some boss battles, making the experience seem really easy even at expert difficulty.
After spending more than 70 hours to reach maximum level for all characters, obtaining most of the items, completing all optional dungeons and side-quests, and also reaching the 3 different endings, Fernz Gate proved to be one of Exe Create Inc. and KEMCO's better offerings.
Despite a few shortcomings, this JRPG manages to offer some cute moments and plenty of secrets to discover throughout the game. I really appreciated the attractive artwork, improved BGM, and nice storyline that feels satisfying once reaching the true endings.
Given the long playtime and variety of things to discover, Fernz Gate is a good JRPG to pick up at any time on any platform.

Ah Koei Tecmo, time for another 16 bit RPG that was ported from mobile to steam. This game is quite enjoyable, however its also rather short. The primary reason that I've even played 34 hours is due to trying to complete everything. (in fact I plan on writing a guide to part of this game here on steam when I get home tonight.) But this brings up another point I wanted to discuss which is they brought back the record keepers! Well kind of... They no longer are physical NPC's on the map but instead are labelled as trophies in their own separate menu. I've managed to get 18/20 of the gold trophies, and the last two one my playstyle simply put would make it a slog to obtain, and the other I don't know how to get.
But this brings up something else I want to talk about since this is a Koei Tecmo RPG. This game and most others made by the company suffer what I call 'Fourth Act Slog' which I will be denoting as FAS from now on. What is it praytell? Well most books follow a three act structure of a beginning, middle and end. KT tends to do four acts though, which are a beginning, middle, wrap up, and end. However the fourth act KT has a tendency to bog down TERRIBLY. This game's main plot line the fourth act isn't so bad, its more like how much extra stuff there is to do.
SPOILERS BELOW
For example to define the four act structure in this game or at least in my opinion:
The first act runs from the start of the game where Alex wakes up in Fernland, all the way up till when you meet Clangorrah for the first time and everyone regains a fragment of their memories after the Stiletto fight. Or when he finally decides to join the support squad.
The second act then runs all the way through to the second Belthazar fight and he decides to join the resistance full time. Or the second Stiletto fight where everyone remembers how they die.
The third act runs up until the first fight with Endrey and then gaining the ability to finally access Clangorrah's castle. The Endrey fight in my opinion is actually where this game's writing is at its best. Sure its foreshadowed, but personally Endrey if he was more developed could sway the story so much.
The final act actually doesn't occur until you beat Clangorrah and get the normal ending. Since like every KT game there are two endings, and the 'better' ending requires you to do an additional set of dungeons. And here like usual there is pretty much no charm within them. The best thing in the fourth act is honestly the design of the true final boss, which kind of ripped off Neo Exdeath, but I digress. There's no real character development in the fourth act, and it feels like things were drug out longer than they should have been. Plus the like 6 bonus dungeons at the end are just that much more extra padding. But I still recommend.
I've played other Kemco games and enjoyed them. They're always a bit on the easy side...usually autobattle thru to the bosses, and the bosses present enough challenge that you'll die a few times in the game. They force you to update your gear, do the extra stuff...so on. As to being in full screen, I just use fullscreensizer and viola, it's enjoyable. NOT this game. It's just balanced all wrong. I'm less than 2 hours in, playing at the expert level, and I literally can't die...2 super strikes and the bosses die. Ridiculous. I wonder if Kemco REALIZES this game is so easy and mis-balanced?? Until they fix it...avoid. Refunded.
not worth even looking at. on the hardest difficulty, the game is easier than your average pay-2-win browser based mmorpg. you auto battle through fights, because they all take 2-3 turns for the entire game, and the game runs at like 5x speed during auto battle, and wombo combo everything in the game. even if you dont use the 1000 gems the game starts you with on the weapon pack, the weapons you get through the game and the frequency of the stat bonus seeds, enable you to just faceroll everything short of a boss. they take maybe 5 turns to kill.
not worth anyones time. the writing is meh. the story is meh. the characters are meh. the game DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO FULLSCREEN. and theres no filtering applied to the 2d sprites made of multiple sprites so they all look terrible.
