A really enjoyable game. Enjoyed it so much more than the first one to be honest. Hope they bring out a 3rd installment
Loved the game, but there was a error in one of the achievements with the name of the characters.
Pretty fun game if you like puzzlers. Some puzzles are pretty tough.
This is an intriguing and complicated game that challenges the player with multiple sophisticated problem solving puzzles and endings that test one's morals and standards. What would you do in the end, pull the switch or not?
If you enjoyed the first Initiate game, you'll enjoy this one as well. Not quite so buggy, although one of the riddles is unsolvable due to a failure of the developers to be able to add up - you'll need to look up the answer.
**CONTAINS SPOILERS**
It was alright. More on the challenging side though, to the point it doesn't make it as fun. Not sure if this game has multiple endings (it sure seems like it though) which makes it nice. Had to save multiple times throughout as I encountered a few minor bugs like the paintings on the wall, and also switching characters it glitched to where I only had a black screen. Also alt tabbing there is no option to make it windowed, full screen which in my opinion is the best option. The graphics are just terrible as well. For me the best graphics made it where it wouldn't be able to run smoothly which is a bit weird as many other games are able to run at great graphics.
A really good escape room game with interesting puzzles and game design. Bought for around £3 and definitely worth the price for me, even if it is a little short.
Really, really enjoyed this. Huge improvement over the first game, with puzzles that are mostly not obtuse and pixel-hunty, and a pretty decent story (especially compared to its predecessor). Very glad this came out.
I really liked the first game, The Initiate, and I think I liked this one just as much if not a little better. You have 3 characters to play in different areas that can swap items to solve the puzzles. I enjoyed that aspect a lot and made it different than the typical escape room game. The puzzles varied in difficulty and were all doable. Riddle No. 5 is flawed, but that was the only problem I had with the game and there is a lot of information on that in the forums. I had a lot of fun solving the puzzles and when I got on a roll it was hard to stop and take a break. I would love to see a third game from these developers.
Great follow-up to the first game. Definitely scratched the itch - not many of these games require as much ongoing observation and I think it's a beefier game for it - one of my top 10 escape room style games!
I missed the original Initiate, so what better to do than come rolling in here like a poser and review the second game instead! I'm not sure if you have to play the first game or not to truly understand the plot here but I felt like I knew what was going on upon reaching the end of the story.
You play as a woman named Sam who wakes up in a dingy, squalid confinement as a voice on the intercom starts bossing you around about what to do alongside delving into cryptic diatribes. Soon you find out that you are not the only person on lockdown and thus begins an engaging barrage of puzzle-solving to solve your way out of this mess and discover why you are here in the first place.
Thematically, The Initiate 2 has much in common with the first Saw movie with some serious shades of Cube happening. You'll uncover bits of the story as you open up more rooms, read notes and meet the other characters trapped in this underground drunk tank. I was pleasantly surprised to hear some voice-acting in this one and though it's a bit on the sparse side, it does add a touch of character to the story rather than simply "read the notes" and call it a day molded storytelling. The graphics (done on Unity) aren't fantastic but they do a good job of depicting a rank, fetid prison which is where you are stuck at. It's not supposed to look like Buckingham Palace and it doesn't. Presentation-wise, everything is perfectly acceptable for the setting and gets the job done.
Where the meat of the Initiate 2 lies is in the puzzle-solving. It's the crux of the entire game and though it's not overly difficult, it gets increasingly satisfying every time that you figure one of the problems out and more of the game opens up. You'll be doing everything from being a human paperweight on pressure stones, solving switchboards, finding codes, figuring out how to crack into computers, deducing which character needs which item (and then sending it to them via a simple elevator-sort of system) and many other point n' click-esque riddles. You can switch characters with a press of a # key and this whole mechanic leads to some really intricate creative thinking that's outside of the usual box. While not a total reinvention of the wheel, it feels rather unique in these fast-paced, modern gaming times as The Initiate 2 is a game that forces you to completely weigh all of the situations possible that each character is faced with in their own area and then carefully and thoughtfully piecing your way through each mystery.
It also helps that the interface isn't overly clunky and the control is tight enough for an indie. The only thing that gets a bit redundant is placing and passing items between characters. You'll be doing it quite a bit and it gets a little ho-hum after awhile. I'm not design savvy on any level, so I'm not sure how this could have been implemented differently but by the 4th hour, the fact that you have to pass each item to the first character, then the second and so forth, does sort of slow down the pacing way more than it should. The good thing is that each time one of your ideas pays-off, it's onto the next puzzle and story beat. Things get freshened up frequently and that keeps the game moving along at a nice clip for its chosen genre.
I had a lot of fun with the Initiate 2, so much so that before long I will go back in time and play the first one. There's a dark story that's fun to unravel and the entire experience feels like some Twilight Zone episode gone wrong and distilled into an old school point n' click adventure that just so happens to play out in real-time FPS. It's not perfect but I think most puzzle solvers will get an entertaining couple of hours out of this game.
I enjoyed The Initiate, so I was excited to play this one. I enjoyed the puzzles in this one as well (although I ended up brute forcing one of them).
I recommend having paper handy to take notes. It makes keeping track of the puzzles/clues in each area far easier than trying to remember what was where.
I remember thinking that the original The Initiate was such a sleeper game ... well done, good puzzles, and not a lot of fanfare. I was absolutely delighted to see that Deceptive Games had a second title out (although it took me almost 2 years to find it!).
What a delightful 'escape the room' puzzler with the added twist of working with 3 characters in 3 different environments and trading objects and clues to reach a final solution. I started playing and became so engrossed that the 10 hours I spent went by quickly. I did stop to sleep and eat but the rest of real life went on hold until I 'figured out the next puzzle.' The puzzles are a mix of logic, hidden objects, math, patterns, etc. Very few clues were just handed to the player and you need to be observant and explore every object and every corner. There are many objects that can be picked up... some have clues and some are just for decoration. The voice acting was professionally done and the sound track is engaging and made me want to keep my headphones on.
I experienced no bugs and the game ran flawlessly. I did miss the instruction on how to put on the glasses (for my keyboard, it was the 'R' which I discovered through trial and error). A list of keys/mouse buttons used in the game would have been a nice addition.
In the end, you have to make a choice which has an impact on the outcome. As in real life, I did 'the right thing' but will circle back to view the other endings (the game has an explicit save feature that can be used to create a check point whenever you are so inclined). Note that if you have not saved your game prior to the final puzzle, you could have to do some replay to see other endings.
I highly recommend this (and the original The Initiate) to those who enjoy a well designed escape game with a story, characters, and interesting/diverse puzzles.
(as a footnote - take time to read the various messages left for the candidates. They contain more than game fluff and were 'enlightening' to discover).
I played this game immediately after playing the first. Same concepts and controls as the first, except you play three people and have to pass items back and forth to each other. That at times could be a little tedious, but for me it's didn't take away from the game, it could just be time consuming and somewhat confusing trying to remember who has what items. Graphics and music were good just like the first, except the people, their graphics weren't as well done as the environment around you but again, wasn't something that took away from the game play. There are some riddles you have to solve to advance game play. I hated those and just googled the answers, but me personally I just hate riddles in game play because I can never understand them lol. You learn some more about the people who are trapping you, but still there are many questions unsolved that I hope are answered in future installments. This game I feel was considerably more difficult than the first. Many more moments in this game than the first just circling around and around trying to figure out what to do next, and they were a few times I had to look up a hint/solution because for the life of me I couldn't figure out a puzzle solution or what to do next. The ending was good, pretty shocking and left me with so many questions. One of my favorite PC games I have played thus far. I can't wait for more!
Picked this up right after I finished The Initiate, and I wasn't disappointed.
Complex puzzle game with lots of different hints in order to solve the puzzles and riddles. Personally I don't really like the riddles because it feels like a lot of wasted time, but fortunately there are very few of them. Mostly it's puzzles, and they're not simple apart from a few here and there. I'd say the overall difficulty is medium to fairly hard, depending on the puzzle.
Make sure to check absolutely EVERYTHING in your surroundings, because it's very possible to miss an important hint and get stuck. Happened to me too, but mostly because the game looks pretty drab on my laptop for some reason, so it's easy to miss items because they kinda blend with the environment.
Don't get discouraged, though. Every time you're stuck, try checking everything again, try to remember what hint you might have seen but didn't pay the appropriate attention, or didn't make the connection at the time. Why not just save your progress and leave the game for a while, do something else to clear your head and revisit it later.
Also: There are some puzzles that you encounter early but you get to solve much later in the game (like Sam's locker or the missing bulb from the lamps). So don't get bewildered about it. The game subtly guides you in that department.
PROS
- three character interaction mechanic is neat
- lots of different puzzles of variate difficulty throughout the game
- graphics are passable for this kind of game
- dreary atmosphere adds to the experience
- a neat glitch that I found, where you can actually move outside of Ben's cell and explore the corridor lol - you will have to reload your game because I couldn't get back in, but it was fun nonetheless :D
- a nice twist in the story right at the end
- three different endings (you gotta save BEFORE you start the last puzzle -you'll know what it is- in order to experience all the endings)
CONS
- a few bugs and glitches here and there (a couple times I had to restart from my last saving point because I glitched out of the game and couldn't move)
- graphics could be way better - I understand that this game is larger and more complex than the first one, but the drop in the graphics is significant
- for some reason all three characters' movement gets shivery every time they use the glasses
Overall, I'd give it 7.5/10. If the colors and graphics were better, it would have easily been 8.5/10 from me. Still, a very good puzzle game that will keep you engaged till the end.
Unplayable. Even with the resolution down as far as it cold reasonably go and all the bells and whistles turned off (except anti-aliasing, it wouldn't let me turn that off; it kept being checked even after I unchecked and then re-started the game MANY TIMES), gameplay is still too slow and jagged to be feasible. Waste of money.
This game makes a unique use of three characters to solve puzzles. While this is interesting it quickly becomes annoying. You come across a puzzle in one room, spend ages thinking about it only to find the solution is with one of the other characters that you have not met yet. When you do then solve a puzzle a door or something will open and you then spend ages looking for it.
The riddles are also way to easy, so easy that you discount it thinking it can't be that easy.
Ultimately a disappointment A good concept flawed.
Just like part 1, this is another great escape room type of game.
Instead of one 'protagonist', there are now three. The second and third are introduced over time. Each is restricted to their own parts of the building, but it is possible to hand over objects and tools required to complete the puzzles for every one of them and, eventually, escape.. or not?
In regards to the area the three characters have access to, it's actually very small. Much smaller compared to part 1 and it's also very compact. But there's so much going on in these few rooms, it's just crazy. Crazy good.
Luckely, most of these puzzles aren't overly complicated. All makes sense in the end. You'll just have to endure the fact that you won't be able to solve everything in a linear fashion. Clues will come.
Like in part 1, there are a few very minor glitches. The state of certain objects isn't always preserved. But again nothing game breaking and this time hardly worth mentioning, except for that it seems to be a bit of a trend with this developer. But that's just the only negative thing I can think about.. except for the music. It's bad. Fitting maybe, but really bad. Might drive you crazy, but maybe that's the whole point of it. Just so you know :)
The Initiate 2's a risk-taker, and a successful one at it. The Initiate's sequel advocates for a reinvented version of a escape-room game where progress is only possible with the help of others, who, incidentally, are also trapped in their own separate room. Even if it gets a tiny bit tedious, the mechanic for sharing items between rooms is quite ingenious, and adds a whole new level of complexity to solving the varied puzzles in each area. Although the twist at the end is predictable, it is important to note that the charm of this game does not reside on its story. Do not get me wrong: it is not a perfect game - a few puzzles are unpolished, and you may encounter some minor bugs. But it was a fresh take on the genre, and it worked wonderfully.
Very buggy game according to the reviews, discussion forum and bugs forum. I myself can't get the mouse sensitivity to be low enough to actually play the game. The developer leaves a lot of questions and complaints about bugs and problems unanswered for many months so I guess there aren't any fixes coming. Refund time I suppose.
Reposnse after the developer replied: They haven't answered peoples complaints, problems and bugs for many months, so I report a problem, then ask a few questions and am told that the developer isn't known for fixing issues etc. Then the developer acts as if there are no bugs, no complaints etc. He responded to my issues with "there's a setting you can change", even though I explained in detail that the setting wasn't of any use. They either don't care about the bugs, broken puzzles etc. or they can't read simple English. Whatever the issue is, you will be left hanging.
Also, this "developer" went around answering a few questions today after I posted questions about him {within an hour or so}, so they do check the forums, they just don't answer. He mostly responded to questions that have already been answered by others or the person found their own solution. Mind you, there are still other people that haven't been helped, just ignored. Be wary of this 2 person company.
Really enjoyed my experience with this game. Definitely recommended.
Fans of 'Escape The Room' type games will really appreciate this.
In the Initiate 2 you're given access to 3 characters in adjoining rooms who you can switch between, as and when needed.
There's a wide variety of puzzles/riddles and odd things to search for as you attempt to work together to escape.
The game doesn't exactly hold your hand (which I find refreshing), and it'll be up to you to find the necessary items or information to progress. This can potentially take quite a bit of time, but it's ultimately very rewarding when you work out what needs to be done and get into the next area.
Also, I feel I should mention that updates are coming out quickly to sort out any issues that present themselves, so don't consider this abandoned in early access.
Overall I found it a very enjoyable experience with only a few minor things to moan about, so I'm recommending this one.

Still some minor glitches, but thoroughly playable at this stage. Devs are actively responding to input, which is a great sign for early access. Game is a quick play at this point, with potential for replay. Mix of classic riddles and scene sleuthing is nice, but in free-text entry situations, answers are not as neatly or clearly worded as they could be, which can be frustrating. Overall, an enjoyable game, and a good companion piece to the previous installment with plenty of callbacks.
