This game might be fun but so many parts of it are so dark that you can't see anything. I turned my computer brightness all the up but too many of the areas are so dark that you don't know a wall is in front of you until you bump into it. Very annoying!!!
Fun short game that reminded me of some of the later 90s/early 2000s adventure games. I appreciate some of the characters and found it amusing.
Pros:
Superb 90s voice acting and facial expressions 10/10
Varying accents from every character 8/10
Waterproof Barrels 1/10
Nonchalantness about people being abducted 10/10
Alliteration 10/10
Game of Thrones references 4/10
Story line: 8/10
Cons:
Save 2/10 - No manual save, and an autosave that is sparse. My game crashed once and I lost all of my progress for the last 30 minutes
Darkness 2/10 - Some mazes so dark I could barely see what I was doing
No cats 0/10
Overall would recommend.
Clever games curator review: 7/10 An Indie Walking SIM with an impressive amount of scope and a measurable number of non-fatal flaws.
With a name like Mr Maze you’d feel pretty confident that this game involves solving mazes. However, I would say that the amount of true mazes is only a little more than your typical walking sim. Instead, half or more of the supposed mazes are really just mildly disguised corridors with the occasional very short dead end. While this might disappoint the maze aficionado, I think for most of us this is probably a better, less frustrating trade off. What we really have here is a story heavy Walking SIM, with the occasional extremely mild puzzle or fetch quest mixed in.
Perhaps it should have been called Mr Storyline. There is a surprisingly large amount of voice acting, but most of this story is told by reading the diary entries or listening to voice recordings. The storyline is a mixed bag; occasionally funny and clever, and never so bad as to be skipped, but certainly not compelling enough to stand alone. It does however nicely break up the Walking SIM aspect of the game.
The flaws include: A couple of levels that are very poorly optimized, causing massive frame drops even on a 3070 (particularly, the first level runs like a pig, around 20-30fps). Several of the levels have fairly nonsensical or even counter intuitive trigger conditions that have to be met before you can continue the storyline. There is also no controller support built in, however the Steam Input defaults work decently well.
On the whole, it’s easy to nitpick this game but I do feel like the sum is stronger than the parts. Particularly if you can overlook the rough edges, this game delivers a satisfying package and makes you feel like you’re inhabiting a somewhat interesting if very bizarre world. I do not regret playing it at all, however I do strongly wish that the dev had spent a little bit longer polishing and refining what is on Steam today.
Creative, fun, unexpected and unique. It's not perfect, yet I wouldn't ask to change a thing. There's soul and vision in there. I need to play more games like this.
honestly? while this is janky as hell, it's still somewhat enjoyable and funny to experience. it's also the best game i've played from this dev and publisher both, and i've played everything they both have released prior to this game and it's their best work for sure.
Keeps You Guessing.. Fun For the Grandchildren.
This game was a strange but wonderful experience. Like a nice simple story and weirdness
The 3D maze is quite challenging. Some area is too dark to see.
The game was pretty slow that I lowered screen resolution and
used DxWnd for performance fix on windows 10.
Story – 6/10
Graphics – 6/10
Sound – 7/10
Gameplay – 3/10
This is the best "so bad it's good" game I've ever played.
It's the video game version of realising a few chapters into a book that you absolutely hate the Author's writing but you NEED to know how it ends or it will haunt you for the rest of your life. It's redeemable because I could share the insanity with my friends while streaming it and I suggest anyone who wants to try this game to do the same thing.
I commend the dev for being able to pull something so uniquely entertaining yet mediocre together.
Let me just start by saying that this game doesn't really run on my super awesome computer. Somehow, I got it to work in windowed 1980x1080 with "good" graphics selected. Even so, it still crashed every time (once or twice) I would start the game. I encountered constant freezes, slow dialogue and very, VERY few save points. But man, was it all worth it! Why am I playing this so late? I honestly loved every minute. Highly recommended!
Unskippable cutscenes, overperformed voice acting, very slow movement in a game about completing mazes and all the backtracking that implies, ill-fitting stock unity assets, uncanny animation, on-the-nose references to other games, movies and people. This game is a menagerie of all the worst things on offer in gaming.
It should be played with the intention of experiencing a bad game if at all. It would make for a great hilarious experience with friends, but if you're interested in playing a fun, quality game about solving mazes, this is not it.
Good engrossing game. Especially for people with no spacial awareness, like myself. Played the demo but there is so much more.
AWESOME Game!! For the record I'm fairly new to gaming and do make use of guides and tips, and I definitely needed help in some parts. That said, the game itself ran smoothly for me--no bugs, no glitches--and had a story that pulled me in and kept me going. I didn't like the dark parts (and there are many--literally you are blind in the dark)--but trial and error got me through. I'm claustrophobic too and that made some parts really tough, but again, I persevered and made it through. I thought the SIM people were creepy but oh well. This game reminds me (in a dark twisted way) of Eastshade (my very favorite game!)...the scenery, the day/night cycles--even a certain character's voice (Andrew)...but I digress. The only thing I wish was different is the save option: the game saves when you complete a level/chapter but there were times when I needed to leave and thus lost a lot of progress. An automatic save or save slots would be really appreciated! This was a wonderful game that kept me enthralled for 15 hours--and I was able to finish it! Bravo to the developer and team and I look forward to more from them!!
I came, I saw, I walked through some mazes. Better than you would think, incredibly strange, but with a weirdly tight lore and story line. It's definitely not a serious storyline, and the gameplay isn't anything to really write home about but I was definitely drawn in and and was excited to get to the ending.
This game isn't a AAA game, and you shouldn't expect AAA features, but it punches far, far above its price, especially since I got it on sale for less than $2.
** S P O I L E R W A R N I N G**
My biggest complaint is that you don't get sent to Inferno. I was seriously hyped for the ULTIMATE maze and it was a let down to not get sent there. I definitely feel I got way more content than I expected, but if a Mr. Maze 2 gets made and Inferno isn't in it I'll riot.
Well to get some things out of the way I experienced a lot of framerate drops and a lot of the puzzles are drawn out, not because of what you actually have to do in them, I expected a lot of walking through mazes in a game called "Mr. maze" but more as drawn out because of how slow your characters movement speed is.
The writing and dialogue is cheesy and cliche but in a surprisingly good way to be honest, the story was actually pretty good even if it's a little bit formulaic, it's quite a cute story with some wholesome moments in it. The game has it's fair share of intentional funny moments where it actually got me to laugh. And the developer definitely knows about camera work and cinematography for the cutscenes, the cutscenes are actually shot very well in my opinion.
Overall even if this game is very cheap and has it's fair share of problems, I can tell that a lot of work and a lot of heart was put into making this, and that's what truly matters. I feel the dev set out to make a fun game with the limited supplies he had and I'd say he very much succeeded! It is very fun and well worth the $3.99 price tag.
A thoughtful piece, on that of the industrial society, inclusive of its future.
I must say, the inclusion of mazes perplexed me, and yet it rose to the top.
The characters were tragic yet enveloping.
I don't know why I bought this game it looked bizarre and I thought I could laugh at it the whole time but no it has some major issues. It runs like garbage even on the lowest settings the fps is just awful and it's really boring.
Even if I got frustrated a few times getting lost, yeah it is a maze game after all, really enjoyed the game. It's its own thing and has a unique personality. I'll keep following what the creator does. Good stuff. Would recommend.
Let's not mince words here:
The beginning gives your promises of laughs and weirdness, but the Maze Meister gets lazy from level 2 onward.
This game sucks. Watch a youtube video, spare yourself walking in a circle to press enter for 6 hours.
this game is a masterpiece in every possible way, except for the fact that it would run at max 15 fps on a NASA supercomputer
it's janky and stanky, but there's something about it that I really like and I can't put my finger on it.
For some odd reason, the game crashed during the beginning stages and Steam suddenly didn't recognize it. Ended up having to launch the game outside of Steam in order to continue and finish it.
It's incredibly charming for what it is and definitely does not take itself too seriously. Completely worth the $4. The mazes themselves are not too difficult in their own rights. Literally had to buy this after 20 minutes of it was shown off on OneyPlays... Very fun to play through with a couple of friends. I highly recommend to get a couple good folks who are open-minded to walking simulators to banter on it through.
Mr Maze is a wild ride. Much more high effort than I expected going in and totally worth a few measly buckaroos. Pretty hyped for a sequel.
The game consists mostly of escaping mazes created by the maze-meister in his strange maze universe and activating runes which unlock the maze exit, also has some fetch quests.
Pros:
Fun
Has a story-line that's reasonably well presented in game.
Has voice acting.
Is humorous.
Developer has clearly made a good effort.
Lots of different and interesting locations.
Lots of NPCs with dialogues.
Achievements
Zero in-game purchases, Zero loot boxes, Zero DLCs, no season pass etc.
Bargain price.
Cons:
Poor frame rates in some places.
Occasional crash.
Not enough check points and it doesn't state when the level completion / new level check point is passed.
Final judgement: Buy it.

Review:
So in my YouTube video I poke fun at the game a little, but honestly Mr. Maze has a lot of heart and charm and I really appreciate the work that went into it.
At its core it's a first person maze game with a story. In this case, you're a father trying to rescue his maze-obsessed daughter after she's sucked into a portal that took her to an actual maze dimension. In order to rescue your daughter you too have to traverse all the mazes to figure out where she went and you can learn some lore and talk to people along the way.
Really, the most I can say about this is if you really want to do some 3D mazes, this is a great way to do it. The story doesn't take itself particularly seriously and the mazes (the ones I played anyway) are varied and mostly interesting.
If the above sounds like your kinda thing, I would recommend the game.
Pretty good for $5 NZ.
Reasonable voice acting.
Interesting enough mazes.
It is a bit ugly but that is definitely overlook-able.
Enjoy some light maze-play with some puzzles as well.
