Religious imagery, elements of cosmic horror, body horror, madness, cannibalism, violence... tragedy. Every scene was eye candy. Everything about Sweet pool was perfect. I have never cried so hard at a BL game ever. 10/10.
I highly recommend playing with the 18+ patch or playing the game directly from JAST (that's what I did; I came back here bc I wanted to perfect the game). This VN is almost unplayable censored here on Steam. The NSFW scenes are not only eye candy, but essential to the story. It also adds another layer of insanity and emotion to the game.
I would do anything to experience this game for the first time again.
On my own personal journey to play through every single (current) nitro+chiral vn, sweet pool marks itself as the final entry. Sweet pool is a curious addition to this company’s library simply from how it plays in the exact opposite of its predecessors. The usual N+C formula I’ve grown accustomed to usually includes multiple bachelors, routes that will flesh out those characters (that tie them into the main story), and conclusive endings that vary in quality and length specific to the individual characters. “Sweet pool” takes this approach and flips it on its head. Instead the multiple bachelors are nothing more than an extension of the story and main love interest “Tetsuo”. This can be a hit or miss depending on your own personal preference, but regardless the change in structure can still be appreciated for attempting something new. I can’t say outside of this character/route change that I am a huge fan of sweet pool’s larger story. I found the parasite “omegaverse” esque flesh demons to be a bit much for my own personal tatse at times, sometimes even detracting from the scenes or character development entirely. Although, this is nothing more than a preference, and thankfully the physical violence and body gore is overall less show-y and in your face than in “togainu no chi” or “slow damage”.
The other standout game elements to “sweet pool” includes the music and visuals. The art style is noticeably different than N+C’s other works, but nothing to really comment on or critique. Albeit, some minor criticism I do have with the art includes a few sprites of the main character “Youji” that I found to look a bit off, but overall nothing too distracting.
The UI is very unique compared to other N+C titles, but I can’t really decide if it’s something I found that added to the experience. The extras menu visually compliments the cultist elements and rundown/grotesque vibe of the game, but the other menu’s can feel sort of bare in comparison.
The OST this time felt very haphazard. Coming off of a playthrough of “lamento -beyond the void-“ left “sweet pool” feeling wholly inferior to that, instead only having a few standout tracks worth listening to on their own. Don’t get me wrong, I think the soundtrack can be very fitting for this game, but I wouldn’t say it’s anywhere close to being my favorite from this studio.
Finally let’s finish this off with a look at the endings. I won’t be spoiling them here, but I think it’s still important to talk about them in a broad sense. Three out of six of the endings are variations of more or less the same idea, and none of the endings are considered to be happy by any stretch of the imagination. This idea furthers the intent of “sweet pool” being an alluring albeit tragic romance tale. The endings can be bittersweet to watch and I think it ties into the larger themes of the story itself. There is beauty in watching Youji wish for nothing more than the happiness for Tetsuo, and clinging onto his humanity when given no other option. The ending that includes the monologue of Youji wishing to be together with Tetsuo for all of eternity, despite their circumstances, was my personal favorite to witness.
Overall I’m left conflicted on where to put “sweet pool” at on some arbitrary ranking or tier list. It suffers from a shorter run time than other N+C games, so I can’t say I’d necessarily recommend it at full price (at least compared to DMMD & TNC price points), but on a sale I think it’s extremely great at what it seeks out to do, despite its minor flaws.
just bought a 20euros yaoi visual novel for it to be at least 20% censored without my knowledge and im now actively seeking death. Don't ruin your life like me and just buy it on jast.
cult omegaverse in the most fucked up way possible
After playing the game for a while, I was confused in some scenes because they didn't make sense. Later I found out the reason for that is that the game is heavily censored. In all honesty, I like the game, just don't buy it on Steam.
A true Period Drama <3
Disturbing and depressing, 10/10. Every part of the game gives off the eerie vibe that really amplifies the horror and beauty of the scenarios. Definitely NOT a game for everyone, but still give it a go.
Choices don’t make much of an impact in the short term for the most part, only really mattering in trying to get an ending. Remember to patch the game.
A reasonable way to describe Sweet Pool is the Catholic dogma of appetite, the human will, is explained through a BL visual novel. The Instinctive way to describe Sweet Pool is a catholic dude suffering through crone disease, welcome to womanhood, Youji.
Odd body horror visual novel, alas the first impression has apparently ciliated a censored version of the original title yet, the narrative does hold up in the heavy usage of Catholism deeply embedded into the narrative. Shockingly, most horror centered novels tend to use the church as a ol ye' evil, yet in narrative of sweet pool there's so many moments that the main character Youji himself speaks to God in internal dialogue, to give guidance and hope in grim parts of the story which is utter bittersweet considering at the same time the main character struggles throughout to accept his undying admiration for Tetsuo.
There's a lot of interesting tidbits in this novel around how religion, in this case Christianity can definitely help others find solace, no less community with others. Yet, at the same time, there are always bad actors who use the faith for their personal agenda. Understand that appetites are a natural part of being human, how we act in mortal realm versus the imposing divine law is out of realm. Only God knows.
That's how this visual novel came across as, a young boy soul searching yet coming to terms with his homosexuality. There's a profound visual usage of the sexual nature of "Infecting" other students is rather a bold statement of men-loving-men characters coming to terms their desires, wanting enact on their instinct as it quells the appetite for love, for affection. Even the visual usage of Virgin Mary as a constant idol for Youji is visibly clear as a representation of how he wants to view himself. He wants to be seen pure in the eyes of God, no less society, and his family.
This is a very conflicted review. Did I enjoy the game? Yes, very much. Can I recommend it? ... That's a much more complex question.
The biggest thing holding me back from singing a chorus of praise is something that stems from it being a porn game - the rape depicted in the game is not something thoughtfully used, it's meant to be seen as erotic, and leads to the issue where (SPOILERS) the character who our protagonist falls in love with rapes him multiple times over the course of the story. It's a big hindrance in a game I'd otherwise consider absolutely fantastic.
When it comes to OG/Patched vs. Steam (Unpatched), I actually prefer the latter. I'm not someone who hates sex scenes, but I feel the story and pacing of the game flows a lot better without them present. And indeed, the aforementioned rape scenes - though still rather tastelessly used - work better as an implied trauma than something we're directly shown. Infact, a lot of things becoming subtext rather than shown outright works better for the general mystique present in the story. The only downside to the Steam version is that some important context is lost in some scenes, and that some of the cool CGs were removed (eg the blood bathtub). (Who knows, maybe someone will make a fan patch to add a nice middle ground to the Patch and Steam version)
The music is fantastic. The writing is great. The art is good, though sometimes does not accurately reflect what the text describes.
It's really a game where you need to be aware of that aforementioned content, and then make your decision if you can handle it and power through, or if it's not something that'd you'd be able to tolerate.

Missing scenes + Censored gore...
Thank you for ruining visual novels on Steam!
Make sure to get this from JAST
works better as a game-to-make-you-sad than a bl -- its extremely depressing and the story is amazing
mpreg classic. dialectics on males with breedable hips. twink death as metaphor for the sexual fears of women. kinda bad CGs. kind of great writing, intermittently. honestly cute choice consequence system, i love any morality thing that isn't EVIL and GOOD. sick boy city :(
sweet pool 7.5\10.
The suspense. In my opinion 3rd-person writing for thriller is quite a challenge, and sweet pool doesn't stand it. In other simillar works I can feel the contrast when mc going back to peaceful real world after bad events, but not here, and overall through this title I just felt lack of immersion.
MC. If I imagine Youji life without all of bad stuff, is gonna be something like this: eat, school, part-job, sleep, then eat, college, part-job, sleep, then eat, work, sleep, and finally grave. You can say that his past made him like this, and I agree, but so what? Youji is boring faceless protagonist who don't do much during story, so every time when he was in some bad situation I was like: "well at least something is going on in your pointless life dude, you better be grateful".
Tetsuo. His type regardless female or male is easy to be appealing and hard to ruin. Cold gloomy and silent characters that look strong are usually likeable, just like some "always drinking and lost the will to live detective" characters in noir, until you start thinking... and if you do this, Tetsuo character just lack of development. He's the weakest point in sweet pool for me to be honest. Yes, he will get some explanation about why is he like this, but nothing to make him better for me.
Makoto. Boring positive character at first, but then... his route just too short. Makoto character thrown in the trash can right when he started to become interesting.
Zenya. Among all the main characters he's the only one who looks alive. Zenya have personality, interests, obsessions, and his life and drama were good to follow.
Kitani. He's actually the best developed character in sweet pool that trying to do something in the story. I got a feeling that his route was simlpy cuttted and he was moved to side characters, because during the story we learn a lot about him, his past, his personality and his relationships.
Kristi. The iguana.
The dark stuff. So in the moments when dark stuff happened during the story I had this feeling: "Ah I'm home". There is always something calming in watching people suffer and as a long-time fan of utsuge I was utterly satisfied with the plot despite slow pacing and lack of suspense(for me). But in the same time I decided to read some reviews, and this bringed me to the conclusion. Usually I would say that dark works like utsuge better for their target audience, but this time it probably the other way around, and sweet pool is better for people that usually don't read stuff like this. I guess I'm just to deep down the rabbit hole to be affected too much.
To mention. Great ost, good style and atmosphere.
i cried a LOT. the whole game is amazing with beautiful bgm. all the routes are interesting and the last one will especially bring you to tears.
this game ruined me
