Zombie Commander is a 2D pausable realtime strategy game. It's easiest to describe this as a ripoff of Plague Inc, but instead of a virus, you're controlling zombie hordes. Where it differs from Plague Inc is that you have some control over which cities get infected and where your zombie hordes will attack (once you've converted enough). The objective of course is to kill all the humans in the world, and it's no surprise that for some reason the developer thinks the entire world is mainland USA (Alaska and Hawaii don't even get a look in). Anyway that aside this is really a workable concept for what could be a great game, but it seems the zombies got to the parts of the developers brain that are related to high quality modern video game technical implementations, so the resulting game is a train wreck, and the train was carrying dumpster fires.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The game doesn't correctly account for modern PC displays, UI scaling isn't handled correctly. As a result of this unfortunate decision, text and UI elements don't display at a reasonable size, it's too small to be legible on most modern gaming PCs, and there's no in-game controls or options to correct this. This can render the game unplayable for many.
The game features mostly static, barely animated 2D images, the kind of thing you expect to see in browser/flash games. While the artwork itself, while mediocre, might be considered passable, the visual presentation here is negligible, it might as well be a slideshow or a Youtube video. Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Asteroids had more advanced animation and visuals going on than this game does. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers on PC.
Another problem here is that you can't alt+tab out of the game properly, another shortcoming that should have been picked up with even a basic amount of software testing. This is extremely frustrating in the modern era of gaming and it's a shortcoming that gamers are unlikely to accept. The game audio keeps playing and the game process keeps running, but the game window disappears and you can't re-enter it. Basic testing is vital if any game is going to succeed in the vast ocean of games available on Steam.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. That's right, only 3. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is to be expected. Gamers just didn't take this low quality game seriously, and for good reason.
Zombie Commander is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
Well short of a decent game.
The graphics are poor, the controls a bit confusing (left or right click this time? Not a clue.)
There is no tutorial that I could find.
The interface is not very helpful, with information often too small to read, and out of the way.
Very few unit types, not a lot of research options.
Sound is bland and the fluff, while little is needed for such a thing, is repetitive and doesn't seem really connected to the game.
That said, I got it for less the half a buck, if you want to explore, it's worth that, nothing more.
One thumb down.
Almost beat the camaing but you cant retreat so i lost everything good game but it needs changes
It's decently fun, Doesn't have much depth, and can feel a little shallow at times, but you can kill a good hour or two with this 9/10
Fun and entertaining small casual strategy game. Very nice and new concept: Being the zombie plague instead of the human "plague", but it is quite difficult, so don't underestimate it because of the "casual" description.
game is just bad trying to make another horde will not let me trying to infect another city will not let me and yes i have the points to do so i youtube it watch a couple channel did what they said try 5 different matches so yeah please don't buy
is it worth 5. maybe i enjoyed it because of how hard it was. no tutorial just throws u in. lost a ton of times. final won on normal. so gets a thumbs up from me
nice
I am not happy with this purchase. It is suddenly way to difficult to win with the winter weather and vaccine cure both should be option to turn off. NO activity in discussion at all and no advice nothing. Ruins the experience. Suggestion...slow the vaccine bar down a little ruins the game.
This is my first thumbs down on a game.
I will adjust this review down the road if they change things
I like it. thank you.
Needs a tutorial as at first its frustratingly maddening without clearer instructions.Like holding ctrl when your zombie horde is created over the zombie type panel to add surplus walkers to your control and even on easy mode its rock hard,I have only managed to grab one city on easy before they killed (again) all of my forces.Despite all of these issues I really like it, its a just pop on and blast 15 minute type of game which with balancing might pleasantly suprise you.
This game will scratch the same itch you might have for similar titles like Plague Inc. Same theme but much more of a conflict sim than waiting for some RNG to infect a random island that will be locked away later. Rough around the edges but I got it on sale for $4 and can forgive its sins.
Map is landlocked to the continental United States. Not much of a tutorial to speak of. You will be tempted to attack things early on. Don't. In fact, first half of the game you will largely be directing your hordes to run away from any opposition, putting stacking infection counters on cities to build up your manpower, picking off medical caravans that cure your infections and slowly building up your research, building up a pile of non combat Z "economy" units. Doesn't sound like much of a zombie sim but if you last into the 2'nd half of the campaign, there is some satisfaction to be had as you start going on the offensive. Reinforcing your main hordes or spawning small back up hordes for mobility or to toss into an ongoing battle some of which can take quite some time, dragging in hostile reinforcements as well. Combat is slowly auto resolved based on the Z types and numbers thereof you brought along.
The graphics are dirt simple but you knew that going in. Sound effects and music are passable. Once you get rolling, there is going to be a lot of screaming and explosion sounds. The plot/style takes itself seriously, its not a comedy setting. You will be chasing down refugees and towards the end, overrunning armed refugee camps outside the dying cities. A little broken English in the translation but nothing too bad. It's no gem but it's no train wreck either. Am glad I stuck around till I understood how the economy works. Had some fun, might even play a second time through for kicks.
Nice concept although very unpolished, for example there are a lot of grammar errors in the descriptions.
The devs need to invest in a spell/grammer checker and the controls need some work (could use some keyboard shortcuts) but otherwise the game is fun.
Actually was a lot of fun, i didnt realise you could hold down the recruitment buttons to mass recruit till about half way threw the game. Over all its a fun small game and i hope to see it grow in the future maby add the rest of north america and then just keep going. prob wont play again till it has achievements or a larger map but the time i did play and experiment with was a blast just not a lot of replayability.
