Ok I didn't expect much from this game as I bought it mainly for the RPG aspect, but I'm glad that I did. For a game that costs less than a dollar, it is easily one of my favorites ♥ I loved the story of Mylne and her adventure and I teared in some parts of it. My only issue with the game is that I wish it had a proper way to control the audio and a keybinding system. 8/10 ♥

This game is too poorly developed and not worth that $13,99 price they display in the preview videos. (Also i'm Canadian so the price I get is lower so I don't really see the point of showing this in the preview).

The camera switch angle sharply without any transition from time to time and this may be the biggest annoyance in any free roam 3D game out there I have ever experienced... add to this a multitude of loading screens... complex inventory system where you use items but they don't really go away so you don't have to start over (maybe this is just the starting bit which is some sort of weird tutorial but it's something they should have changed before the release of the game).

Long story short: I didn't like it! If the developers would have put some more efforts into the game development maybe this would have been a great game but, in this state, it's not enjoyable.

Edit: Some reading material that could really help the developers make better decisions when making games like this.

Marchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift is a game about a fluffy-eared girl dabbling in alchemy and hitting monsters with a fishing pole. As of this review I have not beaten it, but did put a solid 5 hours in before losing interest for other games. Might return to it later, we'll see. Played using a controller. Difficulty is easy in the first half and tedious/medium in the second. Good game for kids.

- This is the Legacy version of the game, with lesser graphics and less game involved. The reason I played this instead of the bigger, cooler game is because my wallet is a moth breeding ground and it was on sale at the time. I don't know if I can justify playing the legacy ver. at full price when a better version is available, too.

- Marchen Forest is split into two halves. One is about talking to villagers in a small plot of land, gathering ingredients, with some fishing in there. The other half is a dungeon crawler with three major parts. They feel like two entirely separate games with the same character. It's a bit jarring.

-- The village half is nice. I got a weird Animal Crossing vibe to it without the houses/furniture. For as limited as the area is, there's a decent amount to uncover/do for 2 or 3 hours. Lots of weird animal people to solve problems for.

-- The dungeon is a slog. Fights are rpg-style with a battle screen and timed turns. Monsters are very limited. There are three floors with 10-12 levels per floor that can vary. Once you go into the dungeon levels, you are stuck until you either die, use an 'escape' tool, or conquer the floor. If you die you are sent back to the beginning and lose your treasures. I was doing great until I got to Floor 2 then the difficulty curve slapped me in the face. The solution is to repeat floor 1 until you get better armor/lvl up. That was about when the fun in 'finding the mystery at the end' puffed out like a sad, little candle for me. Got near the end of Floor 2 before giving up.

--- For both parts of the game, the graphics are basic if a little outdated. Reminded me of an action rpg on the DS. The music is solid. The characters are memorable, especially Mylne and Bard.

- Another review brought up weird bugs. I didn't come across any during my playthrough. Everything started up and closed fine. The character moved. Nothing went weird outside of the ramen.

- Upon starting up the game everything was in Japanese. To change it to whatever your respective first language is if you aren't well-versed in Japanese, go down to where you see the Japan flag and click the button a few times until you can read everything successfully.

- There is DLC you can buy. It is not translated.

In summary, it's your money. The game is unique enough to be enjoyable but rough about the edges and aged like a funky, mushroomy cheese. There is a better version of this game on steam; if you want the full Mylne experience, go with that one. I liked the first half of the Legacy version and didn't have the patience for the second half.

Lets be honest, this is a scam not a game, only around 4 hours worth of playtime with the rest of the story being in a DLC thats not even in english and the remake costs 4 times the price of this and thats when you include the discout for the owners of this version. Garbage developer and a scam not a game, not recomment this or anything released by this shitty developer.

Game feels like an RPG from PS1. Controls shown on screen are for controller use only, you have to guess during the fight that escape, ctrl, and enter equate to x, y, and b.

This game is basically a low tier Dark Cloud copycat with some decent art still frames. Your food depletes instead of Water and the forced fishing is just as pointless.

* Game has been replaced by a newer version
* The "enchanted forest" advertised in the trailer is a single, small zone. You can walk from one end to the other in 15 seconds
* Freezes on exit, requiring game to be force closed through Task Manager
* Missing standard Steam library assets (box art on library page)

Lovely game but I wouldn't have gotten far at all without looking up a walkthrough for when I got stuck on part 3....Definitely needs a little more direction in parts to avoid needing outside help.

Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift is a cute little dungeon crawling RPG, not to long, but also honestly needs a bit more polish. The game starts out rather slow and uneventful, just a cute cat girl doing fledgling alchemist stuff. Chapter 2 is where the real game begins and from there you see what this game really is. The Graphics are simple and cute, the music/sound is good, and the battle system is a bit different, but over all the game was fun to play.
The only gripe I would have is that I feel it could have used more balancing with weapons/armor/leveling, but other then that, a solid play.

Honestly, this game was so freakin' fun and enjoyable. And SO cute. I loved the play through, the story, and the designs! I love fun cozy games like this, and I honestly didn't find it all that easy! It was definitely a challenge. And I even learned a lot about mushrooms thanks to this game!

It's cute, it's fun, it's two games in one! The first game is a puzzle/point-n-click style adventure and once you complete that, the second is a dungeon crawler. The game has some flaws but if you just want a cute time waster, this isn't bad.

So, the first game has you collecting ingredients to make potions and become an alchemist. To do this you have to wander the forest, solve simple puzzles, do some fishing, get a penguin a date, take a mushroom quiz, etc. Pretty basic stuff. Once you have enough ingredients, you take them home and grandpappy makes a potion with them.

Once you complete the 3 potions, the dungeon opens up and the battling begins. You grab your alchemist's stirring stick for a weapon, pop an orange on your head for rations and head inside. The difficulty spikes are a little rough in the dungeon but not too bad. At the start of each floor you are absolutely decimated by enemies. You quickly gain levels, find equipment and by the end of the floor you're the one decimating them but then at the start of the next floor the cycle begins anew. You will also put your alchemist skills to work by brewing your own potions in the later floors.

Overall, in spite of some minor rough points, it's a pretty good game and did I mention it's cute?

First of I really love the game, it’s very cute and fun, I just came over to say that there is a little issue, I was trying to see if I could climb the ladder behind rocky, and it turns out there’s missing collision. I accidentally went thru the tree and fell down. I could walk under the water and stuff but I cant get back up, so I have to reload.

This game is like two different games, one after the other. Personally, I found transitioning between the two different game styles a bit jarring, but the overall experience I had was generally positive.

The first game, Mylne and the Forest Gift, is a questing adventure game. Fulfill peoples requests, do some fishing or the quiz game. It's very relaxing and cute. If you're the kind of person who doesn't like doing these kinds of events, I wouldn't recommend this game for you - this section takes a few hours...

The second game, Mylne and the Strange Cavern, is a dungeon game with RPG style one-on-one battles. I found the difficulty upgraded quite a bit each floor and the fighting mechanics required some reflexes and took a bit of getting used to. It isn't so relaxing (lol) but it does have some checkpoints and you keep your level if you die, so it isn't that bad overall. I have one tip for this half of the game: teleport out when you find a unidentified high level equipment, as good equipment makes a huge difference in survival here.

All in all, I'd say the game was incredibly cute and entertaining enough to recommend giving it a shot.

It is a simple but lovely JRPG. It doesn't need complicated control or tons of content to drag player into the game.
We definitely need more games like this.
Things I like:
-Cute protagonist
-Cartoon-ish art style
-Simple mechanics
-ADORABLE AS HECK

This is definitely a hidden treasure.

A very pleasant surprise! A full remake was announced on the VERY SAME DAY I picked this up on a complete whim - I'd LOVE to wholeheartedly recommend this, but if you're strapped for cash, either wait for that remake or pick this up on a very generous discount.

This is a genre-hopping slice of life jrpg that rewrites its own rulebook every hour or so. It's so clearly made with a lot of love, the dialogue is charming and the gameplay kept me guessing. The best comparison I can come up with would be an imaginary middleground between Animal Crossing and an Atelier game, it's a relatively unchallenging jrpg with a lot of nifty ideas that could use a bit more time in the oven. If the developer is truly a person with a lot of love to give, it shows in this game, I'm looking forward to the remake so they can iron out the kinks.

You ever see a game, and you know you'll enjoy it before you even play it?
For me, this was one of those games. Despite the N64-tier graphics on a 2018 title, and the character illustrations vaguely misaligned with my personal tastes, I found myself called to play this game, and I don't regret it.
This is actually basically two games in one.
The first game, Mylne and the Forest Gift, is basically a slice of life game, not unlike Animal Crossing. You do technically have the objective of gathering alchemy materials, but what you're really doing is meeting and interacting with the denizens of the forest. A smooth, relaxing start.
The second game, Mylne and the Strange Cavern, is a roguelite dungeon crawler RPG. The simple, streamlined mechanics make the transition painless, and despite some difficulty pacing issues (particularly between Floors 2 and 3), the game mostly avoids being needlessly punishing.
The story these games (mostly the second, where the most lore is revealed) tell is somewhat simple and cliche, but no less charming for it.
Overall, the game does have its flaws, and it won't blow you away, but it was just the sort of experience I was craving.

After my fourth attempt to replay it, I realized I was already too bored to give it another try. I haven't asked for a refund because I want to support a small-scale indie developer who might make a better game in the future.

I struggled to like this game so much, I even struggled to write this review. But the first half of this game was so slow. If you risk buying this game, please remember to use the "bed" to start a "new" day. Also, expect the game to start in Japanese, with a bit of guesswork you can change the language to English. A lot of this game is guesswork. Parents -- this game has sexual innuendos -- it's possible to avoid them if you don't look into any "holes in the ground" but honestly it's not a kid-friendly game. I was burnt out by the time the dungeon crawling came. There are only three potions in the game, collect the same ingredients each time. Expect unusual controls as well, and having to walk from the beginning of the dungeon each time you enter.

Coming from a JPRG heavy childhood, Marchen Forest brings back the genuine bliss of being in a magical world where problems are simple, people are friendly, and the world is filled with fun and laughter. If you couldn't already tell from the game's opening, people who like grimdark realism, please go play something else.

Eventhough the story does ramp up and pulls some heartstrings during the mystery cave arc, its slow ramp up and tutorial handholding may be off putting to some. However, once you get past the tedium and the occasional vexation from difficulty spikes between floors, you will find that despite the lack of polish, the game is a gem from such a small dev team. Some story sections are hard because of a general lack of direction and at times badly explaned mechanics that can leave the player feeling confused, but the game is not difficult to beat.

Completed the main story in about 11 hours, which to be fair was enough for me given this game's pricing point. Though there were times I was just grinding, its not as tedious as generally expected from JRPGs. After defeating the final boss and then watching the end credits roll, that feeling of bittersweet melancholy begins to seep in as you realize your time with this story has come to a close. The DLC doesn't really give proper closure in terms of plot, and the lack of an epilogue chapter other than the ending cutscenes and animations can be overlooked as those that stuck with this game to the end knows which particular scene from the ending credit roll will fill the majority of your emotional needs.

I loved a lot of things, from the themes and artstyles, to the general spritework, dialogue, music and soundeffects, and just the general feel of the game that I feel that despite all its flaws, its a game I definitely would want people to play. Its also on the switch and android, and I am legitimately tempted to get the switch version so I can just pop in the game from time to time. Though replayability is an issue with the general lack of randomization, its filled with enough character that you don't mind playing through everything just to get that feel of living in Marchen Forest.

Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift is an adventure and RPG game where you play as Mylne, who simply wants to make a potions to impress her grandpappy (yes that's what he's called). At first it's an adventure game, but in the post-game it turns into a RPG.

Pros:
- Simple yet intriguing story
- The villain, while not complex, has done a lot of dark stuff, I really wasn't expecting that
- It's very funny at times
- The presentation looks neat
- The portraits for Mylne (after the update), looks fantastic
- The designs for characters are splendid
- The music, while not owned by the developer, is placed perfectly
- The adventure mode is pretty fun
- The three minigames are really neat, fishing is fun, the quiz show is surprisingly intense, and the dungeon crawling is really fun with a neat battle mechanic

Cons
- The other characters, apart from a few exceptions, are really forgettable. I'll only remember the mushroom guy, Mylne, Mr. Bard, Sparrow and the main villain
- Animations tended to have very noticeable loop points in-battle, and even the fog had a noticeable loop in-battle
- There's no way to skip a bunch of dialogue, the option is only presented for certain scenes like the beginning cutscene
- There's no way to turn off music or SEs, while you can mute your computer, there are times where I want to listen to my own music
- The adventure is very easy to get lost in, and enjoyment-wise, pales in comparison to the RPG gameplay later
- You can't pause a battle mid-fight
- The dungeon balancing feels too reliant on finding weapons/armor/accessories to stand a chance by the third floor. You're either going to have to grind or be overpowered, there's no inbetween.
- Items don't have descriptions or at least descriptions that can be accessed from the inventory menu. Granted, the tutorial does explain some of the descriptions, but it'd be neat to have the descriptions onhand

Overally, Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift is a very charming game. I'm not sure about the game being worth CDN$15.49 since the experience only took 8-9 hours, excluding what may be available in the post-post-game, however for sale for CDN$10 (which is when I got it), I feel I got my money's worth. Either way, I say it's worth giving a shot.
