This game is where Kiryu canonically forgets how to sugar coat things and gains the ability to negate all damage with the TIGER DROP.
Also there's a non-zero chance that Majima will attempt to jump you the very second you load into Kamurocho so be ready for that.
A great remastered version of the original Yakuza game that started the series. To note there are a lot of cutscenes in the game especially at the beginning so don't expect to jump right in the game with fighting.
Pros:
- Great cast of characters
- The new UI in the remastered edition is nice modernizing the game
- Combat is fun and fluid
Cons:
- Some side quests are boring
- Majima attacking you randomly is kind of annoying
- The story can be kind of confusing learning everybody and who is who years later
Yakuza Kiwami is a great continuation for the franchise. The story is solid and the combat is fun. It gets a tad repetitive at times, but overall enjoyable. 8.5/10
i like certain mods in the community (my friend forced me to download the mod)
Its the second game (chronologically) of the Yakuza Saga and its really better than the first. The pace picked up and it lives up to its name ("Kiwami" translates to "Extreme").
It emulates a Kamurocho that is the same as in the first Game (Yakuza 0) but ever so slightly changed as it takes place 10 years later. The story is as robust as it gets and you never run out of things to do.
A few things could have been better:
Fast Travel, but I dont mind it cause it gives me the opportunity to make some money on my way to the next mission, while I stumble into a random sidequest and totally forget that I was actually on my way to finish the story and Oh, well, another 3 hours passed while I was trying to find a homeless man a jacket and ran into a hostess that needed my help and an old man got beat up by a bunch of goons which needed me to find his wallet but his wallet was inside of a club and now the owner tries to kill me with his staff, chairs and tables flying everywhere as I earn experience to unlock more moves to fight more guys coming to end my existence because there is a bounty on my head and my brother tries to collect it too, but there is a little puppy I need to get food for and this weird guy in a snake jacket ambushes me as I come out of the store, but when I win the fight I find a Booba Bug Card of some game that some kid wants me to play cause he's really good at it and all the other kids are not on his level and on my way to find more cards to play him, a weird guy sells me a ring but forgets I have ears and I have to beat them up cause they scammed me, while people need my help and I have to get to a donqichote to fill up my Ramen Needs.
10/10
Another amazing Yakuza game, and another added straight to my favorites list. Once again, amazing characters and story. Kiryu and Majima are as amazing as ever. And the story, once again, is amazingly crafted. The gameplay is also amazing. A ton of quality-of-life and improved mechanics from Yakuza 0, and the combat also feels very smooth. Only thing I found annoying was the boss recharging mechanic, but other than that, absolutely perfect.
Being the person I am, I absolutely fell in love with Haruka. She is so damn adorable and is the perfect adopted daughter to Kiryu. I love how much Kiryu protects and cares for her, I'd absolutely do the same too, no matter what happens. The perfect way of showing how caring, loving, and family-oriented Kiryu really is, and I absolutely adore it. Yumi as well, is another fantastic character and in the end, felt so bad for what she went through, but I'm glad she had the closure she needed in the end. I honestly wish that in another timeline, Yumi and Kiryu get married, without everything being ruined, and eventually have their own Haruka together. And Reina, she will never be forgotten, such an amazing character in both Yakuza 0 and Kiwami. So upsetting to see Reina go in such a brutal and undeserved way. Much like Makoto Makimura from Yakuza 0, Haruka, Reina, and Yumi are some of my most beloved characters and I have a major soft spot for them. I got teary throughout the game for a number of reasons, some from the main plot, others from some substories, but that ending really did kill me, from the cutscenes to the flashbacks, it got me good. (I still don't understand why they put such a heavy watery filter over the screen during those cutscenes).
The substories were also really enjoyable. Everything from the humorous ones to the more serious ones. One of my favorites has to be the follow up with Kyoka and Takashi. It's actually such an adorable story between them two, I'm glad it was introduced as a minor subplot in the main story, even though I'm sure most thought it was unnecessary for the main plot. Another one of my favorites was the "Memory of the Bubble", having recently just played through Yakuza 0, it really does show how awesome this entire franchise is connected, even after years apart in-game, there's still references to previous events and history from the past. There were quite a few callbacks which I thought were amazing, but the first two that comes to mine had to be the bubble substory and the callback to the shrink-wrapped magazine with the finding presents for the girl to give to the boy. The hostess mini-games were also really enjoyable. I'm not the type of guy to do it for the spicy video, just for the interesting dialogue and the achievement, obviously, but one of Yui's discussions really put my emotional side into perspective with the specific topic about emotional movies, age really does matter in my case.
Overall, this is an amazing game. Both the story and gameplay mechanics are so well done. I enjoyed literally almost everything. The table top mini-games are the most infuriating, but other than that, everything is great. I even enjoyed the mini-game they brought back to be the improvement of the infuriating cat fight club from zero, MesuKing.
Yakuza 0 is a better game overall (story, fight, substories) but Kiwami is still fun and tiger drop is OP and fun af
A great remake of a PS2 classic that is still a rough time if you are arriving from Y0. While the new polish and Y0 engine make a lot of the gameplay and traversal much smoother, the substory design and many of the upgrade mechanics are noticeably worse. The story is still incredibly solid with a notable dip right in the middle, but the intro to the story of Kiryu and the conclusion are as bombastic as any Yakuza title. Overall it is much rougher around the edges due to the design of games at the times of release, which haven't changed massively in this remake, but well worth it if you want to follow the story since Kiryu's role as a father is a big part of his character for the next few games.
I played this game only a little while after finishing Yakuza 0. Anyone who liked that game will definitely enjoy this. While I do think 0's story is better, Kiwami is better in almost every other way. Minigames are still great, combat gameplay and the upgrade system are much better than in 0, and the charming wackiness of everything that isn't the main story once again hits with full force. Also Majima. Can't get enough of that clown.
Yakuza Kiwami is fun.
If you're coming from Yakuza 0, you're going to notice a lot of things were reused.
Is this to say Kiwami's a bad game? No, it's pretty good. It's an enjoyable experience. But don't expect it to be better than 0.
But uh, yeah. 10 years in the joint really made Kiryu a fucking pussy.
Even though everyone starts on Yakuza 0 nowadays (including myself), Yakuza Kiwami is the remake of the actual first game. It is how it all started, so even though it feels a bit lackluster compared to 0 in terms of story (rightfully so), it's still a great game, and a great start to what is now one of my favorite video game franchises.
kiwami means extreme and for a re-skinned ps2 game this is extremely improved (some outdated gameplay stuff but not too much)

GREAT GAME! The graphics were awesome. Story is amazing. But sometimes the fighting can be tiresome. Good thing there are some mini games to run to.
Pretty good so far though feels a little restricted compared to Yakuza 0, still a pretty good game so far. 8.5/10.
man.. this game takes you places, much like how polished Yakuza 0 was as an "entry" to the series (as it's a prequel that was developed after the original version of Yakuza 1 was released), Yakuza Kiwami is given the same attention to detail as the previous instalment, following the plotline from the original Yakuza 1 but with the same amount of polish as Yakuza 0.
what was nice to witness in this game was to also experience the development of the game world as some things in the prequel's plot line and era have decided Yakuza Kiwami's outcome, in essence what the prequel did was explain the history between characters and the state of the world quite well, leading into this game with a decent amount of backstory to navigate the intricacies of this franchise.
in terms of game mechanics, the fighting can feel clunky at times, boss battles can be somewhat frustrating to get through but with some perseverance (and enough leveling up), with time, these encounters become less of a challenge and to be honest the fighting mechanics are very good given the age of this game.
it's also a very well optimized game to run on potato-tier hardware, somewhat of a staple for japanese video games it appears.
overall a very good experience, at times it's less of a game and much more about putting yourself into the shoes of your main protagonist and to do what's right by you and your (in-game) family.
P.S.: In case you haven't played Yakuza 0 first, I suggest doing that before getting into this. Also, consider playing this with a gamepad instead of mouse and keyboard.
look, i loathe this game (i dont like majima everywhere, i dont like the fact that the story is unchanged, i dont like what they did with the combat). but the thing is i played it after 0 which immediately makes it an unfair comparison cuz 0 is the bomb
id still consider it worth it but thats cuz i have an insane yakuza bias. ALSO DO NOT PLAY YAKUZA 0 BEFORE THIS GAME YAKUZA 0 SPOILS NOTHING AND IF ANYTHING GETS YOU MORE ENGAGED IN THE STORY YOU WILL BREAK DOWN IN TEARS
possibly one of the best narrations of gaming history but the combat system is unbearable
While 0 is objectively the better game , this one might be my favorite since it's the one I play the most. Tiger Drop is so busted tho but I love it
This is how you do a remake!
For anyone getting into the franchise, here's where you should start. don't start with the prequel. Yakuza 1 and 2 were "supervised" by a Yakuza crime novel author in Japan Hase Seishu. They form the basis for the series, and what a fantastic series it is. It's got a lot going for it, gameplay/life sim elements are always on point, combat is fantastic, Urban JRPG all the way. The story however, is the strongest element and what really sets Yakuza apart.
can't kiss funny one eyed man
Good game to unwind to, nice story with simple enough gameplay to get through the fights and the option to gain more complex skills.
Kiwami is really a continuation of Yakuza 0, as both games run on the same engine, with the same combat, the (mostly) same mini-games, and as such, if you liked Yakuza 0, you're gonna like Kiwami.
While the story is not quite as good, it is still plenty compelling (especially if you played 0 first). Expect more of the serious, emotional crime story with wacky, LOL-worthy undercurrents. A critique here, is that one of the main antagonists, is pretty much a cartoon villain with little depth. VA's are top tier as usual.
Soundtracks are good, but not great like 0. I had a weird glitch throughout my play-through where all my street battles and encounters had the "Rush" style battle theme, even when I was fighting with Beast and Brawler. Dragon style was normal. I didn't see anyone else mention this, so it might be just me.
The Majima Everywhere system is an interesting design choice, but ultimately annoying to deal with, and I recommend getting the iconic Tiger Drop as soon as you can, and just spamming it non-stop against him.
Performance is generally good, although I did have a couple freezes - mainly from controller input during the switch from Fullscreen to Windowed Borderless. The "save" glitch from Yakuza 0 is much better, even though it still exists. If you find your items and inventory glitched out, just save over it again, and it should be fine.
For those of you debating between getting this on console or PC, console is plug and play, but PC has more mods to make it look prettier and QOL improvements, and most importantly the ability to skip straight to Legend difficulty (with Hex editor).
Overall, a good game, and an entry certainly worth playing in the Kiryu saga.
P.S. if trying to 100%, use CyricZ's guide on gamefaqs
the game plays really well on the steam deck. The story wasnt as captivating as the yakuza 0. The story had so many holes. The combat was disgusting🤢 . The move set still felt abit repetitive
Great follow up to 0. Transitions the story flawlessly, especially for this being a remake of the first ever game, and the combat mechanics for Kiryu feel just as great as they did in the first game, if not a little more refined. I do miss being able to play as Majima, and the grindy side content wasn't as fun as it is in 0, but this is still a phenomenal game at its core.
Yeah It was pretty good fighting Majima 200 times was pretty fun, The story was pretty good as well.... The only bad thing was how atrocious the boss fights was. I don't know how they managed to fumble it this hard with bosses. I'm still not done with the final boss It so fucking bad
Coming from Yakuza Zero, I'll say that I personally preferred Zero's story more. But because I experienced Zero, it made the the story of this game hit so much harder. And just like Zero, everything from the story, characters, and combat are great.
Playig this after yakuza 0 made me a little sad. Great story that was enriched by Y0. Must play!
Good story and combat. I dont like the control that much for "k&M". Overall excellent game.
Do you want to experience the feeling of being stalked or getting a scam? This is a game for you!
The plot is great if you play Yakuza 0 first. Game is fun and great... since you can kill everything with R1+△ .
Overall, 7.5/10
It's a game about Yakuza Chad Kiryu trying to solve the case of the stolen Ten Billion Yen from the Tojo Clan, and Haruka is there too I guess, with A LOT of outrageous minigames and side quest in between, Also Majima-San who has a special kind of dynamic relationship with Kiryu... Think Goku and Vegeta but picture Vegeta hiding under a giant traffic cone to surprise attack Goku. Also it's slightly homo-erotic but just enough where it's funny.
Yakuza Kiwami, in my opinion was more fun than Yakuza 0 although I really like both games. Kiwami was just easier for me to get into. Gameplay is fun and the relaxed nature of the town makes me want to stroll around rather than sprinting everywhere.
Having Platinum on both this game and Yakuza 0 i can finally write a review
Yakuza Kiwami 1 is a great game if you are trying to get into the Yakuza Franchise, it has a solid story and is compromised of a perfect ratio of funny/ weird and serious moments making it one of the best games i've played in a long time.
If you've played Yakuza 0 don't really expect something different out of this one given the engine used is the same and everything apart from the level up mechanic is the same.
As always side-quests are varied and always different from other games.
Pros:
- Great Story
- Addictive Side-quests
- Combat ( it also has his cons if you are trying to platinum )
- Haruka
- Some Improvement on the level-up mechanic
Cons :
- Combat as previously mentioned but only if you are trying to 100% the game, it's pretty doable if you are just beating it normally, im specifically talking about the final boss where you really can't move for the majority of the battle.
- As this is the same as Yakuza 0 your biggest struggle will be loading screens every 5 seconds
- Roaming around the map becomes really tedious after a while especially with the majima everywhere system when you are trying to do something else.
- The platinum ( really it's pure pain and grind, the majority of it is spent doing boring tasks or playing mahjong, please do not try doing it unless you are really a psycho like me )
Overall a really decent experience if you are looking for a great story game with decent combat that hits you with a surprise that TRUST ME you'll never expect
Where to begin with this one... If you've played Yakuza 0 before Kiwami, this game will be a step down in almost every aspect. The story and its twists aren't as thrilling, most side activites aren't as varied or engaging and the game overall is much much shorter. Still, it's a worthy and (mostly) enjoyable, consistent Yakuza experience from start to finish and more or less a continuation of what 0 laid the groundwork for with its characters. Beyond that, "Majima Everywhere" is probably the best aspect of this game. Was always fun to witness Majima come up with a new way to surprise Kiryu. 10/10 addition, I am going to miss this feature going forward.
HOWEVER, and this is a big HOWEVER, the game has a HUGE downside. Its horrendous combat system. Compared to 0 not too much has changed systematically, but the enemy combat design, particularly most boss encounters are utterly terrible. There is so much bullcrap to overcome in some fights, if you don't adapt and bullcrap back, you're going to have a very unfun experience. No matter how good you are at the game or how much you try to learn an enemy pattern, it's going to hit you, stunlock you, drain half of your HP and suck all of the fun right out of the game for the moment. Then you have to go in to the pause menu to heal up and hope your healing resources last until the fight is over. This, sadly, really drags the game down.
My recommendation if you're just in it for the story: Play the game on easy, don't bother with the dragon style at all, heat spam your way through those annoying boss encounters and don't look back. The dragon style would be a powerful addition to Kiryu's arsenal, but by the time the credits roll, most players probably won't even be halfway through its gated progression, unless you stall your story progress and actively seek out Majima and finish Komaki's questline. By the time I finished the story, my Majima rank was at A and despite all Komaki upgrades, the dragon style still felt like a definitive downgrade to all the other styles. The basic square x4 combo being a late-game upgrade doesn't do it any favours.
TL;DR: Yakuza 0 did it better. Story is predictable, but good; combat sucks. If you like Yakuza, you will enjoy this.
the game is entertaining and the story is well put together
My first Yakuza game and i quit liked it!
The first 6 hours were kinda tough, but something clicked after that and i liked it.
Kiryu is the a japanese He-Man, especially in the substories which i loved. He is so humorless and stoic, its hilarious.
I liked the story and the characters, but the combat system and the constant fighting isnt well made.
Majima everywhere sucks a lot too.
But still, i quit liked Yakuza Kiwami and im looking forward to Part 2!
majima the type of guy to hide in a cone all day for the chance to talk to kiryu
I started yakuza series with yakuza 0 and this was my second game. Compared to yakuza 0 I didn't like that much but story was good as always only stayed because majima content and pocket circuit, karaoke songs are lame and no disco these are cons for me. Yakuza 0 was literally perfect game. Kiwami hit me more like dlc. It's good and enjoyable but not great. Can't wait to play kiwami 2.
Well done story with interesting characters and enough plot twists to keep engaged. Adaptive game play taking the game beyond button smashing so common these days. Don't skip out on the side quests.
game is pretty good, sadly the pacing is kinda meh since its a remaster of an old game but I enjoyed it nontheless. Dad Kiryu <33
The name of the series is literally: "Yakuza: Like a Dragon." What are you waiting for?
I will recommend the game to anyone who has played Zero (which I did before this), or any of the rest of the series
HOWEVER
I kinda hated this game. By the time I was halfway done with it, I was looking forward to it being over.
To start: I played the original Yakuza after playing this, specifically a romhack called "Yakuza Restored" that restored the original Japanese voices (the PS2 game had a hilariously bad English dub). Both the original and Kiwami have a very... loose story. There IS a story (and not a bad one), it's just not as tight as Zero or 2/Kiwami 2, and it tends to get... super distracted down kinda silly tangents (this is not the substories, I love the substories)
Kiwami introduces a mountain of filler and a very... annoying progression system. Don't get me wrong, I love Majima, but I was absolutely sick of him by only halfway through this game. And 90% of the boss fights were garbage, I felt they were even worse than they were in the PS2 original. It's a serious downgrade from Yakuza 0.
The combat was fun, I loved the extra story cutscenes that were added to link this game and Yakuza 0, and I did enjoy the story and characters (do not get me wrong here), but... man, this game was a slog to get through. Play the PS2 original. You won't regret it.
A good remake of an already incredible game. The story is god-like and you will have a lot of side-stories to keep you entertain for hours. Also, if you're new to the Yakuza universe, this is a good place to start. You won't be disappointed.
9/10
Continuing my playthrough of the Yakuza franchise, which was highly recommended to me, I had to experience Yakuza Kiwami. I took a moment to see what this story has to offer, and I was met with even more depression and violence than in the prequel. Now that I have a better understanding of Kiryu's backstory and his beginnings in the franchise, I am encountering many familiar faces along with some new characters as well. I even took the time to go back and see the original PS2 game through a friend's emulator, and it made me realize how much I appreciate the Japanese voice acting more than the English version.
If I were to have a saying for this game, it would have been "I don't kill people!" or "Damnit Majima, this is the eighth time I have fought you this week, AND IT'S NOT EVEN A TUESDAY".
But now we're just getting started.
When I started playing Yakuza, I was expecting a goofy not-so-serious Beat 'em Up about the Japanese mafia... Well, it is, in a way, but it's so much more than that! The story is actually so good, sometimes it seemed like I was playing something based on a J-Drama, and I mean this in a good way.
I never played the original, but I've seen enough videos to know how much of an improvement this one is, still capturing the essence of the game it was based off.
There's a lot to do around the city other than beating up enemies, like minigames, dates with hostesses, random (but fun) encounters with Majima (he's such an iconic character), collectibles (gotta get those keys and cards), substories, challenges, and establishments to visit! This game also somewhat teaches us about some Japanese views and cultural aspects, and the way of living in the city. The soundtrack was also well done, not to mention the iconic song "Baka Mitai" from the karaoke. The combat system is fun and we have 4 styles to master, other than the possibility to use the environment to our advantage (bikes are our best friends here), and weapons.
This is my first Yakuza to play, and I am now going to play the next ones for sure. I found this one a very nice introduction to what this franchise is about, and I'm excited about it!
it's good but i miss the business sidestories, the lack of it kinda kills my will to do substories in general
Fun gameplay, great story, and addicting minigames. Highly recommend
This game was my introduction to the Yakuza series, and it caused me to fall in love with the game series. It takes very fun liberties, has great level design, fun moves and is easy to pick up and get going with. There's plenty of fun side missions and silly moments, but the game can take itself seriously when it needs to. Yakuza Kiwami finds the delicate balance between funny moments and pure agony, with it being very easy to get immersed in the story and fall in love with its dynamic characters. I've played these games on PS3, PS4 and PC, and I will tell you outright that this game and others in its franchise has made me cry. I strongly recommend this game and to try it with an open mind.
Это просто ахуено! Очень годная игра, имеются свои топорности и условности, но в основном всё хорошо, интересно и даже смешно в хорошем смысле, стиль Дракона really good, но при полной прокачке) Маджима и его "Кирю-тян!" forever.
it is a good game but i played yakuza 0 before and the story feels just not as good here. the knowledge of characters is not very good in comparance. without 0 Goro would just be somebody going on my nerves.
dont get me wrong it is still a good game but Yakuza 0 is supirior.
the animations of the characters especily in the faces are very stiff.
Story 7/10
Sub Storys 8/10
Mini games 6/10
Graphics 7.5/10
Total 7,5/10
Good game but infirior to its predecescor
