This game is probably a blast with couch co-op or remote play but seeing as how I dont have any friends wanting to play, no online matchmaking, and the last dev post in 2021 I would not recommend this game unless you have a party ready to go. I mean you can play against npc cars but theyre so bad I won a match sitting still running the game long enough to leave this review.
Really fun local pvp game, but the official controls are horrible (A to drive and B to reverse, and triggers to use abilities/drift) Once that is fixed Thunder Rally becomes really intense and the car physics are surprisingly good! The game also has many different tracks which kept the game interesting for over an hour. definitely recommended (especially since it supports more than 4 players!) and the full price is fair.
Very fun party game. Would love to see an online PvP version of this. Works great on Steam Deck too!
Amazingly fun old=school style combat game. Excellent mechanics and superb graphics. Really polished too. Don't hesitate.
I really like the game, it feels well polished and playable at it current state.
I wish it can have more competitive mechanics where you can attack and defend creating that mind games.
Please add skills similar to twisted metal, command sequences to shoot ice, shield, that kind of stuff.
The game is fun, but it feels too random.
I recommend the game and wish some more deep and competitive mechanics will be implemented.
Amazing game, I just hope it doesn't stay in Early Access indefinitely!
I can't tell if I just really dig all the explosions and physics to it, or if I like the sport aspect to it. Definitely don't regret picking this one up. Muliplay on parsec.
Played with my kids and a few friends. Had a blast! We enjoyed the high tempo of the game and virtually non-existent load screens. Only thing I don't like about the game is the balancing of mechs. A little too slow and creates a stale mate if you are charging a person.
The game is very good and is very fun in both single player against bots and playing with friends.
Please continue to support the game and add more content, it's very unique and obviously made with love.
A really great arena style, up to eight player couch (or with friends and Steam's Remote Play Together, online) multiplayer game!
A nice blend of retro and modern. A bit over the top in some ways, but in the right ways. Not overly complex, but not too simple. I feel the makers did a lot of thoughtful play-testing and they know what makes a great game to kick back and play with friends. Laughter, smack talk, and profanity will ensue--as it should be.
Highly recommended at full price and an absolute no-brainer on sale. A must-own for those that have 5-8 controllers and host game nights with friends, but certainly still fun for 4.
For those couch gamer connoisseurs that want more details, specifics, nuances, etc: here are some good things to know: (It's all pretty much good news)
• This game allows you to customize your bindings for what button does what on your controller.
• These bindings are saved for when you open the game again later.
• When you make one modified controller configuration, it's EASY for multiple others to chose the same one. (they don't have to manually set it up one button at a time for each controller) You save controller bindings as a profile name, and each player at the start of the game chooses any custom made profiles (or the default) in the same screen as they choose their car (which is all doable at the same time for all 8 players) Very easy. More games should have this so easy!
• You can mute the music. For when I host game nights, I always have my own music playing and as such this feature is very much appreciated (but sadly lacking in some other games)
• There are 13 power-ups that you can enable/disable each individually. You can disable them all if you wish.
• You can play free-for-all or you can play teams.
• You can have asymmetric teams. Want 7 vs 1? Can be done. 4 vs 2 vs 1 vs 1? Yes. Just enable teams mode (read on screen prompts carefully) and you chose your team by your car color. Note that the only way I could "choose" a different color/team for a bot's car was to:
1) remove that bot
2) add that bot back
3) If you didn't want the color the new bot was, go to step 1. If you did like that bot color, go to step 4.
4) If you want more bots or players add them now. If you want the bot to keep the color of car it is, but have a different vehicle model too bad. (unless I missed something)
(nonetheless, this is good enough, I'm just glad to have the option of asymmetric teams and to have bots be an optional part of them.
• Note that it's perfectly possible and easy to pick any color combined with any vehicle model for human players. The issue above is only specific to bots.
• You can use bots to "fill-in" for balance. 2 humans, 6 bots? Can do. 1 human 3 bots on one team vs 1 human 3 bots on another team? Can do. 1 human on team Red vs 7 bots on team Blue? Can do. 1 human vs 7 bots all free-for all? Can do. 1 human vs 1 human no bots? Can do.
• If you can flip someones car over, they are forced out of it, and can't get back inside the car until they flip it back over (which they can do easily, superhero style). They are far more vulnerable outside the car, but they still have some chance. Don't get too overconfident.
• You can steal anyone's car so long as they're not inside it. Empty cars become gray/neutral and take on whatever color of the player who enters the car.
• If your car gets destroyed while you're on foot still inside the arena, you are not eliminated. Also, you can spawn a new, neutral car by punching a power-up. So long as you can get inside it fast enough, you'll be driving a new car.
• You can disable the barrel launchers that players who've been eliminated attack from the sidelines with.
• There is post-game stats section for bragging rights and whatnot.
• There wasn't a way to buff/nerf individual players as far as I could tell. But asymmetric teams can help a bit regarding players of different skill levels playing together. 2 veteran gamers vs 4 or 5 newbs can be a great time!
• There's also a "screenspace steering" option (which each player can turn on or off independently (regardless) of the gamepad binding profile they choose) This is basically an alternate steering method that makes it so your analog stick no longer becomes the default "left turns car to its left, right turns car to its right) but instead becomes an "aim" target for your car. So for those that get confused about whether to turn their car right or left based on which way the car is pointing on the screen (like downwards/towards camera) this is an alternate option. So if you aim the stick up and right, the car will turn (to the car's left or the car's right) until the car is pointing towards the screen's top right PROVIDED that the player also uses forwards/accelerator or backwards/brake (whichever is the one that is the direction of travel closest to the current aim-point analog stick direction. It's not as simple as moving the analog stick top right and car moves top right with no other buttons pressed. So, if someone drives their car car's forward "west" or "screen's left" until they hit the left edge of the arena, and they want to travel "east" or "screen's right", they will need to release the accelerator/gas button, aim their gamepad stick right, and push the brake/reverse button. Holding down the accelerator/forward button and aiming analog stick right will not move the car away from the wall (if it were a spaceship game, it would probably suffice, but it's not: car's can't rotate in-place). ANYWAY, most will simply use the default steering, however.
• Note that if you're trying to host a game using steam remote play together for more than 4 total players, you'll need a good internet upload speed. If you notice things get really bad once you add that 4th, 5th, 6th player or whatever, it's likely your upload speed, at least it was for me. Also, playing the game in a low resolution miiight help get one more player in and/or lessen input lag for some players with slower internet.
it's a hoot!
Looks fantastic, very satisfying effects and solid controls.
Quick and dirty matches where you have no time to be upset you lost because you're immediately thrown into a new match and laughing again.
Lastly: Major bonus points for you being able to exit your car (FOR NO REASON!) and jump kick other cars!
This is hands down, the best multiplayer game I have played in years. It's super addictive and works amazingly well with steam link and with lots of controllers. You can play with up to 8... yes 8 of your friends at once in this game and the fun literally never stops. Even after your car dies, you get to continue playing by throwing exploding barrels on the remaining players. While the graphics may look simple, the game play is revolutionary and reminds me of when consoles used to cater to multiplayer and how much fun that was. I play with my two younger sons and we max out the computer players and have a blast. Btw, the computers are amazing players in themselves and you won't be disappointed if you are playing it by yourself. Great game, so glad this exists. Keep up the great work Typical Entertainment... you're amazingly atypical :)
I have always had an itch for another great "Twisted Metal" game. While this doesn’t satisfy that itch, this is phenomenal on its own. It has an arcade game type feel and the random map selection only adds to its greatness. With all the VERY UNIQUE powerups (looking at you ROBO PUNCH) AND the fact you can abandon your vehicle, truly a great experience. Also, the developers are quick to comment on your suggestions. Play and offer suggestions, you won’t regret it!!!
Awesome game! Tonnes of fun. The clunky feeling of the cars, and the mysterious power ups are amazing. So many funny moments that took us all by surprise and had us laughing out loud. I cant wait to play with more people. It would be interesting to see some kind of racing mode, similar to wrecked revenge revisited or mashed drive to survive.
The maps with half pipes and other features that launch you into the air are great!
Keep it up. This needs to get out there to more people
Ladies and gents! The local couch car-arena brawler that you never knew you needed! An amazing local experience with bots, solid gameplay and OVERALL fun!
The game gives you a bunch of confined arenas that ensures the chaos and destruction right after it begins! A nice variety of cars and items makes you come back for another round! Plus, it is the ONLY game that allows you to drive a MECHA HERBIE from Love Bug. What else do you need? Oh yeah. A rocking soundtrack with cool guitar riffs to follow the action, of course. And that is also included!
The developers are super friendly and really open to suggestions on their Discord. Psst, I’m still waiting for my Classic Mini Cooper, btw! :P
Recommended and solid EVEN in its Early Access! A must!

This is out-and-out an arcade party game. Yes you can play with up to 7 CPU drivers, but it's more fun when played in a room with other human players. It ticks all the party game boxes: it's easy to get into and skill level doesn't matter very much because there is complete chaos onscreen which ensures a level playing experience for all players.
It heavily reminds me of the old arcade game "Demolition Derby" except that Thunder Rally is like that but on steroids. Aside from the usual battle-royale of demolition derby, there are weapon pickups and environmental booby-traps. Your car doesn't have a damage meter, but you will die if you are yeeted into hazards or off the map by the other players. You can even get out of the car and punch the other drivers. Even when you die, you get to lob exploding barrels onto the remaining players - so you don't have to sit out the round and wait for the others to finish - which is a nice touch. The end result is absolute chaos.
At the moment the game plays in a best-of-seven round tournament. The computer AI is fairly advanced and puts up a good challenge. If you're looking for a game to play with many friends then this is perfect. It is lacking online multiplayer currently, so it really is an in-house affair.
If you're looking for something with a bit more single-player content you might want to give this a miss - as there's not too much to this game.... yet. Although beating 7 other CPU drivers in a tournament is quite an achievement, but possibly the only one.
This game is awesome.
Pros
*Great maps
*Pretty smart AI
*Great fun with friends, can support up to 4 players on the same computer
*Good number of cars
*Rad power-ups, like black holes, mechs, machine guns, etc.
*The very brilliant feature where you can run around and steal other people's cars
*Just unbelievably fun
There really aren't any cons, although I do have some suggestions:
*Add a race mode
*More match rules: How many rounds, choosing specific power-ups, a mode where you all start without a car, etc.
*More in-depth car customization. Right now, there's a good amount, but there are some things, like I can't put a specific skin on a car, it's bound to that color. Make all of that more changeable.
*More tracks, because why not?
Loving the game so far, can't wait for more content!
Awesome! Looking forward to where they take the concept. My 5 year old and I love it thus far. Transformer only mode is our favorite.
Brilliant! Like a mix of micro machines, robot-wars and demolition derby.
Great physics and I love the way the arena changes with each round, keeping it interesting. It's fast paced and works really well.
My only suggestions (so far) would be to slightly lower some of the effects, such as the "jump" physics are really crazy.
The gravity could be slightly heavier too, so stuff doesnt float in the air quite as long.
I like how the windows break on the cars, but perhaps more dents etc when hit?
Overall I think this has massive potential! Very fun!
needs a mode like death race 2000 or carmageddon where you drive around in a large map and pedestrian kills get you powerups/points
