Awesome space game. Recommended.
The game is great, but it seriously lacks a direction. It needs a real end goal that you just don't need to complete.
It would have been easy to do too. Just make the factions on the map more meaningful, and slowly encroach. Make us need to take out specific command points/ships/bases in the faction and as you do so, a boss ship could track you down. It would start too strong to defeat, but defeat more of the faction on the run and you weaken it to beat eventually.
That said, the game has insane self-imposed challenge potential, and with the diversity in the ways you can go through the game it is nice to just make new runs over and over.
The upcoming base building DLC is the last thing this game ever needed, as traversing the nodes on the map takes you far away from any specific location and there's no real point once you clear that area, so going back is boring.
Pros:
+Ship diversity.
+New runs can be vastly different.
+Quite a bit of weapons and armors to fine, though the values are pretty boring, it is nice you can tier up.
+Tons of potential for self-imposed challenges
+Difficult unlocks to really give you a goal if there ever was one for this game.
+INSANE levels of power in long term files if you put a lot of effort into finding and raising crew.
+Challenge runs under dire circumstances are possible the more you unlock.
+High quality for what the game is, definitely no regrets getting this. Just give it some time for you to get rolling.
Cons:
-No real end-game,
-Combat is kind of boring once you get any decent at it. Enemies can be a threat but it's very one-dimensional. The biggest danger is just overextending your power and getting swatted like a fly.
-Asteroid fields are a joke sadly. Super cool but the damage is too low to be interesting.
-Lack of diversity in nodes. There are some, but none are very interesting. Space should have more threats in the zones you end up in.
I definitely hope to see more games from this developer. Particularly I'd love to see their next project have some real combat depth. Skill expression is something I think they could do really well on a different project, but this one has kind of run its course for development. Whatever they do, I hope they stick with the idea of a good equipment system, just without the Relic function in this game.
have not played in a long time, and im so happy its still going, and with a new dlc on the way
it used to be a play your way kinda game,
and reminded me of alot of old games i used to play but more alive, and much much more
i honestly cant wait for the DLC, but can i wait to play it again entill then, i dont know, but im going to try..
CANT WAIT :)
good game
Well, this is a nice space looter shooter.
Game would be fun, but the navigation from place to place couldn't be more inconvenient or confusing. Often you will likely wander into places where there are no paths to get back. Had to drop my most recent play through because there was literally no way to get anywhere lower level or back to where I came from and no clear way to even go in that direction. Every direction or path I go inevitably leads to every danger in the game with zero support, especially from my fleet guy who just docks stations immediately in every single sector and never returns. I've tried this game a few times now and it's always the same issues.
Sort of like Elite Dangerous, but on a 2d plane
Bad game.
Bad tutorial.
Had no idea how to play the game.
Don't know where to go to complete a mission selected. No direction at all. No help at all.
Your first fighter is a forward fix wing which of course confused the front and back of the plane. Very very very bad way to introduce you to the game.
Don't buy,
Its ok. I just love space.
It's kind of like if your favorite spaceship game was a Singleplayer MMO Flash Game with a budget. It's a gamey-ass game that knows it's a game and focuses on being fun as a highest priority.
And it is. Updoot
enjoyed my time in the game, very fun to build up a fleet and start wrecking things.
With over 200 hours in this game I am still finding ships I haven't unlocked yet, and is in need of being piloted.
This game provides a ton of content and is very refined and I have yet to come across any bugs, glitches or even minor issues. With dozens upon dozens of different ships and ship classes and even more weapons and potential skill/crew setups this game provide more entertainment and fun than what the full price is. At a sale it's an absolute steal and a very highly recommend purchase.
If you like spaceships, customization and an engaging game in general I would recommend buying this game.
Star Valor is a crazy time drain with excel spreadsheet of weapons and ships. It sure is a niche game, but I can appreciate how some may get into it and enjoy it.
I did not find my self in that prestigious position however; So I don't recommend it. The main reason being I just did not enjoy what I did with it(in the 50hours I played - which is enough for me), and think it was just a waste of time.
At the end of my play through, in order to make money - because my ship was not very good and most quests I saw that were worth a damn were light years away and made me spend crazy $$$ on fuel(as well as maintenance) - I decided to go full time on trading.... Unfortunately I found that incredibly boring.
If you want to spend the time understanding it, then go ahead you may like the game.
I'm not saying its a 'bad game' and the dev didn't put effort into it, because they are about in the community talking to players and still making updates.
I could play this game, but I don't think its worth it. And have many other games I have enjoyed exponentially more than this and am keen to play. That is the basis of my "I don't recommend it". That is my opinion and I am not changing it.
Disclaimer : This is the 2nd time I have entered a review of this game, and this is how I feel about it. It sure is niche, and unfortunately, I wont spend any more time.
Is gud gaem
I am not usually one for space games, but this one intrigued me. I've since put a ton of time into playing and can say with 100% certainty that it is great. While the game lacks a story outside of the Tutorial missions (still a bit of time to complete) it makes up for it in content and exploration. Constantly upgrading your ship and fleet. Going it on your own and taking down ships 5X your size, crafting your own gear. It has it all.
The Developer (that's correct 1 developer) has put a ton of time and love into this game and it shows. There are constant patches and updates. The Developer is active with the Steam community and with the upcoming release of your own space station and the future promises of living Economic model in the future, I can't recommend this game enough.
Got 50hours out of it before getting bored so I got my money's worth but it is not the next big thing.
It gets repetitive and boring.
Dev usually wants £20 for it, Don't pay that, its a simple indie game. Pay £10-15 max.
Awesome game made by awesome indie dev. Very high quality & no bugs, unlike so many of the games from studios. If only the quality of all recent games were released like this, we would have the 3rd golden age of gaming.
This game is addictive. I have just amassed 400 hours and unlocked all achievements.
I love customising a ship and fleet - very rewarding to build a large fleet from nothing, go to an end-game area alone, get attacked and then order your fleet to warp in and annihilate the enemy.
You can do some many different builds such as miner/trader (in which case you can hire merc's to do your fighting for you while trade/mine), bounty hunter, faction builder, etc.
You can also deck out your fleet with customised super-weapons and go dogfighting, or just build a carrier/missile-boat and sit back and enjoy.
I love Space Engineers, Avorion and Empyrion, but the customising (in lieu of voxel-esque building) is more relaxing here.
very fun space game. very easy to lose hours of your day playing.
This is a fun game with RPG Elements. After 50+ hours I'm still coming back and having fun with it.
Very nice and relaxing. This is my comfort game
Great game for early and mid progression and lots of different paths to start from making replay before hitting end game satisfying. End-game content is incredibly lacking, once you reach end game the replay value becomes zero. If player modding becomes actively incorporated, this game will likely end up a timeless classic.
8/10
This game reminds me of a mix of Space RPG 4 and Eve Online in all seriousness. I can really feel how they touch on the tip of how crunchy Eve gets along with the game play of Space RPG 4. This is a fantastic game and to anyone that enjoys either of those games would be doing themselves a disservice if they didn't give Star Valor a try!
400 hours played and I'm still going! Multiple factions and the pursuit of unlocking the more trickier perks for future replays keeps my interest alive. There is also a hidden depth to gameplay, when you start optimising custom weapon configurations. The inclusion of ultra rare ship items was also a nice touch. I can't wait for the future DLC. Highly recommended and a bargain for the price.
Nice clunky game, sad the dev is not serious about it which makes it boring fairly fast, definitely not worth to buyy at full price
gud gm. gud gm 2 by. u by gud gm.
It's a shame this genre is such a niche market.
Might look like a generic arcadey top down space pew pew game on the surface, but while it doesn't have the depth of say Avorion or the X series, it's still a space sandbox that offers many hours of fun:
- Great weapon variety and attack playstyles
- Lots of loot for you space goblins out there
- Ability to amass a fleet for ultimate destruction
- Very satisfying ship customization and itemization opportunities
- Plenty of pilot "builds" to spec into
If you want a space sandbox experience with combat and non-combat activities and aren't too fussed about a lack of story, 3rd person views, and sick top of the line graphics... this game is an excellent value (with or without a sale).
Game has been released from early access for a long time yet the main story is STILL not completed.
StarValor is the ultimate (Top-Down) space sandbox! That being said? StarValor is not your "award winning-stroy driven game/I.P. arch"
My favorite "go-to" game!!! Very fun action, great soundtrack and can run on a toaster. Customization is fun (once you get it) and the exploration is relaxing and colorful. Highly recommend!!!
Solid Space RPG. Strong customization, plays well, good options. I recommend it.
I found that the enemies can feel tanky at higher difficulties and getting an optimal crew member is fairly RNG intensive, and I did not want to use the fleet system because of the sheer time and resource investment ships presented.
Hands down a great game ... lil grindable ... light on the story ... lots of customization ... easily worth its price in gold ...
I got addicted to this game and played 87 hours in under 2 weeks.
Fantastic game.
It's very fun and challenging. There's a bit of a steep learning curve but after that it's just a ton of fun messing with ship/weapon customization.
There's a great deal of freedom on how you want to progress/farm skills/money.
It's a bit short on the "campaign" side, and I'd appreciate high-level scripted/story quests.
One of a kind.
It can be quite addictive grinding away mining the asteroids and exploring new sectors. It does have a few niggling issues such as if you have a fleet you have to remember to undock them from stations and they can sometimes disappear and the fleet management does not show up on your screen.
The good: The game is simple, easy, and fun. Ships are fairly easy to customize within limits, and character/pilot customization has a bit of something for most people. You can even have a practically unlimited universe to explore, practically being the warning that the game might become unstable if you explore enough to make it too big.
There are dozens of different ships you can use, and while few are truly unique within a character's journey they often still have role or faction bonuses to set them apart from other ships in their class. Likewise most factions have some interesting, better than standard gear you can purchase or run missions to acquire. On top of that you can eventually learn how to craft most gear, including the faction-specific items, and even produce or upgrade them to the epic/purple quality.
The visuals and music are also very serviceable at worst and frequently quite nice for the sort of game this is.
On the customization side, not only do you have the standard "gain experience to put points into some pass" mechanics that gains experience from crafting, breaking down items, combat, buying/selling, mining, scavenging, and exploring, when you start a new game you can pick your background, ship, pick up to 3 "experience" perks (minor bonuses, no negatives) and 5 "Other Perks" (bigger bonuses, often with negatives), and even a copilot.
The backgrounds can offer solid bonuses with the occasional penalty, and investing in a copilot at the start can give you some pretty nice bonuses if you know exactly what you want to do and they synch well with it.
The developer is also still actively working on this game despite a release date of over two years ago at the time of this review. The latest major update has taken awhile, but the previous updates came out fairly close together with something like 3-4 updates over a 6-9 month period.
The bad: Some aspects of ship bonuses and stats don't function quite like you'd hope or expect.
Ship hangars are the biggest example of this for me. A ship with a hangar that says, "Drones: 4" doesn't mean it can hold 4 drone production modules or that one module can produce/deploy 4 drones. Instead what it means is that because every weapon and equipment module in the game has a numeric size (big engines can take 7 units of space while tiny guns can take just 0.5 units) the drone hangar size is basically free "space" for drone production modules before they start eating into your Equipment allotment. If you have two heavy mining drones that are size 4 and have a ship with 50 equipment space and a drone hangar size of 4 available then after equipping 1 drone you'll go from 50/4 to 50/0, and the second drone will take you from 50/0 to 46/0. I understand why it works this way, but it doesn't save it from feeling clunky anyway.
Similarly ship bays are a bit clunky as well. If your ship has a hangar that says, "Ships: 12" and "Max Size: Yacht" this doesn't mean you can store up to 12 yachts in your ship. It means you can store up to 12 "space" worth of ships with the largest ship being of the "yacht" class. Shuttles take up 1 space, yachts take up 2 spaces, and so on, and as such that means your ship can only store 12 shuttles, 6 yachts, or some combination thereof. Again, I understand the reasoning of this, but the labeling and implementation still feel clunky.
On top of that, while you have oodles of options for crafting you have a very limited list of input items to craft with, and while you acquire a good many of them from mining you also need to engage in exploration for a good chunk of the others. Even then it's a matter of "build the parts to build what you want" system. Iron + scrap = component, module X takes 10 components to make. I suppose the simplicity is a bit of a pro for the game, especially when compared to games like EVE Online where item production can look, and even get, pretty complicated at times, but in between the large variety of inputs and the large variety of outputs crafting feels too simplified.
The game also has a custom weapon crafting option that can be loads of fun, but you really can't go too crazy with it because there are hard caps on some of the ways you can customize them, (IIRC) some weapons aren't available yet for customization, and the way energy consumption, heat production, and size scale can often make it feel like you're either going past what your ship can use just when the weapon is looking fun or you end up with a weapon that is ultimately inferior to standard weapons.
On the aesthetics side, no matter how big the galaxy is there are only so many blueprints for systems, both in terms of looks and music. The game does not have "hell systems" where the local star is a pulsar or you come across a black hole, and while I've never counted them I'd be surprised if the game has much over a dozen tracks of music for it.
The ugly: Your first time warping into an "asteroid rush" in a small and still slow ship.
Asteroid rushes are basically tons of giant rocks flying from the right side of the screen to the left that can one-shot unprepared shuttles and yachts. If you have a larger ship with more shields/hull you can survive a hit or two, and the faster you fly to the left the easier it is to dodge and avoid asteroids. By the later stages of the game you'll be able to just park a huge ship in an asteroid rush and enjoy a laser light show of mining lasers as you quickly fill up your cargo hold, or you could fly a ship so fast that you actually see all the asteroids spawning on the right side of your sensor map in a giant line that you can then either avoid or try to mine.
Until then, however, asteroid rushes can get pretty ugly for new players.
Also, while it's fairly "realistic" within the numbers of the game, in terms of ship sizes, your cargo space feels ugly small, especially when you're mining. The "Horizon A03" is a "Class 5" ship, the second to biggest, and has a "Space Occupied" of 434 with a cargo hold of 200. Considering that the ship can also hold that aforementioned up to 12 ships up to yacht sized having over half the volume it takes up in space being dedicated to cargo is pretty impressive. That 200 spaces of cargo can also be filled up with a fraction of an asteroid field in a minute or two.
There are, of course, ships better suited to that sort of thing, but even then their cargo holds are ugly small compared to the size of materials you mine and the quantities you need for crafting.
Another bit of ugliness is the faction system. Ultimately it's quite simplistic and fairly easy to manipulate once you understand it. *However*, it gets ugly when you try running missions for the pirate faction and find out that unlike the mining, trading, alien, and military factions you can't opt out of the pro-pirate faction-specific perk. Once you reach a specific reputation level with the pirates the traders and miners automatically and irrevocably become hostile towards you because of this.
One last bit of ugliness is if you're like me and willing to crack out dnSpy to mod a Unity game, in my case to bump up cargo spaces to something less frustrating, every update will break your mod. This isn't the dev's fault by any stretch of the imagination. This is more of a, "If you don't like how the developer has the game balanced and tweak things on your own prepare for it to get frustrating when he starts rolling out rapid-fire bug fixes and balance tweaks. Or stop playing for a month or two." warning.
Overall this game is a great one to zone out to and have fun with. While there's a campaign/story available for certain starting options you're not required to choose or pursue them. They're interesting and can give you some nice perks/ships, but they're optional.
Also, SplatterCat makes a cameo appearance in the game.
What a game.
Simply a great game, so much replay-ability, only played it for 2 hrs and only just left the first area only another 50 to go :)
no auto run key or automatic forward movement key toggle - who wants to hold down W to move everywhere in a space game that is this big? - energy issues from the very start of the game make the pace super slow - maybe the energy aspect gets better later but having to hold down the W key to play the game from start to finish is unacceptable to me and makes it not worth the time.
its simply good game that does not have any modern shit that no one likes.
Star Valor is a top down space RPG with a lot of freedom, customization and choices.
There are many achievements to get that in a roguelite fashion can be used in subsequent playthroughs.
No matter what you do, if you do something you're gonna get experience for it and that makes it extra worth it to pursue all the different achievements.
The amount of customization out there allow for a lot of very overpowered combinations to feel like the ultimate boss in that universe.
It's a really enjoyable game and I'm surprised it hasn't attracted more people.
Good game
Great game. So much variety and replayability.
More story lines, would greatly benefit this game.
Well worth the money.
If this had the spaceship designing aspect of Cosmoteer, I'd be playing this game NONSTOP.
really great game but maybe adding mission storyline like how space rpg like games from human storyline to alien and endgame storyline one.So keep it up the good work devs!
Played this game since the early access days, and it's only gotten better with time. Highly recommend.
okay first off to the dev. who is putting in so much effort to this game thank you, this game is a throw back to a game I used to play called Flatspace, i love playing this game and i appreciate everything your doing with all of this, i hope you keep making many more upgrades and DLC's for this game. It's very streamlined and easy to play, very replayable, and it's just so much fun commanding your own fleet whether with mercs. or your own people or both makes this game extremely fun, i like all the people you can buy or find gunners, pilots, mechanics, supervisors, ect. and all the trading or mining you can do and crafting all the weapons you can make please keep working on this game.
would always recommend 10/10.
