Can't save the game.
You could play it for 30 minutes, to 30 hours, but your progress will always be lost. And its grindy, so there goes that.
Wonderful idea, but too poor world.
I don't usually enjoy crafting games but the simplicity and roguelike elements made me really like Infinite Survival. The only thing it's missing is an endless survival mode (ironic that a game with this name doesn't have one) because there's no incentive for me to keep playing and trying new things if I know it's all going to end when the time runs out.
Do not need too much unnecessary. You are an old school, you love the pixel 80s, adventures, craft, generated world, you came to the address.
P.S. I am very glad that I bought a full pack of this game. Thank you! 👍
(CORRECTION: It seems there is a save, which I discovered by accident. This would be because the game in no way communicates that it will save your progress when you return to the main menu. This makes the time limit even worse, really.)
I'm really enjoying this game, but it doesn't seem to have had any updates for over a year, the dev is notoriously unwilling to engage in discussions, and there's a couple of serious flaws that mean I can't really recommend it to anyone else.
While I'm personally actually very much enjoying the simplicity, even as basic as it is, you'll struggle to experience everything it has to offer due to an in-game timer of about 5-6 days before you are deemed to have survived your "infinite" survival experience. Of course, this might well be because of a lack of any ability whatsoever to save, which would make lengthy runs somewhat difficult.
Makes me wish it was open source, or open to modding, so that at least someone else could tie up the basic loose ends.
I enjoyed playing this. Small game for a small price. Would have liked to play in more of a sandbox, but there's no way to disable the 5 day timer and actually make it 'infinite'.
Getting a decent starting position can become frustrating. You're either getting owned or god of the wasteland, without much in between. Basically, I want more.
So due to the nature of this game (as endless and very simple in content) I'm going to review this game a bit earlier than I'd normally do. It also means that my opinion may change as I play a bit longer and as the game still seems to be in development I will be sure to follow up if any of my opinions change.
To begin, I actually enjoy the basis of this game. I like its simplicity (with an exception I will bring up later). Both in content and visual, less is more is used to its best in this game. It's a simple enough game and the contained time frame changes what sort of infinite survival game it is. The mechanics are for the most part simple and there is enough variation in tile and terrain to make replaying it very interesting.
A slightly neutral note, my enjoyment of each session rides on what sort of map is generated in the beginning. I was initially going to give this game a more negative review but I tried playing a bit more and found I hadn't enjoyed the game before as I had several poorly generated maps which gave me no interest or activity to learn what the game was.
And now on the negative side. I find that the greatest weakness of this game is that it's not obvious how to play, what your objectives are and how all the mechanics work. Yes there is the help menu once you enter into a session but walls of text aren't very interesting and there were several aspects of the game I couldn't understand. Some of them I learned through gameplay but others I'm still confused about (i.e. what causes death? the details about stamina, etc.) and I see that other players too have this problem. The game can be great but if it is too difficult to figure out a player will never have the chance to enjoy it to begin with. I'm all for learning through play but this game needs at least a little more direction in order of explanation for me to give it a pass. It also gets tiring that I have to open and close the menu repeatedly to learn all the status effects, crafting recipes, etc. I've learned some with time but really it shouldn't be this hard to figure out a game laid out (and most successful) because of its simplicity.
That being said, I'm going to give an overall negative rating at this point. This doesn't mean I'm done with the game however as I still plan to play and explore it a little more. There also seems to be continual updates from the developer so I'll be sure to keep an eye on that as well. As for now, I await to be able to change my verdict.
I do not recommend this game.
I was playing a potentional great game the last hour, but it lacks some basic functionallity I believe is essential for any game.
As the title use the word infinite, I expect an infinite way of playing on random (procedural) generated maps forever and I believe this title is capable of offering that.
While the lore is small (there are only ten enemies), there are a lot of crafting recipes to create a lot of items, weapons and even simple base building. There are multiple biomes and caves you can enter and the screenshots shows a world map that looks like a huge world.
The worldmap button in my game is greyed out and I lack info as a starting player why that is the case?
Is it a function that is not in use yet? Do I have to craft it?
There is a simple explanation of the game in an ingame help file you have access to, but also here nothing about the world map.
While playing there are some things that triggered my attention in a positive way.
The UI, the pixelart, the font used for the ingame text, the smoothness of the controls, the working of the walking, fighting and crafting mechanism is all work perfect so that means the developer is capable of bringing his/her ideas into a homebrewed game, what's absolutely cool!
I mean perfect in the way that it is works really smooth and the control scheme and hotkeys used are really perfect.
Also and that is rarely seen in indy games, it all fits together, the art/UI/terrain style is consequent.
Something else what is pretty unique is the fact the terrain is made of different layers and you can dig trough it. Also you cannot move to every adjacent tile, only if you are on the same level or max one level difference.
All in all we have a capable developer here, not seen any other games of them, so probably their first game. Their Steam page is up and have 100 % fair info on the storepage (it doesn't advertise more then it is), and there are unique game mechanism that combines roguelike and survival in a very nice way.
But their are flaws, mostly minor, but one major that was actually the final reason I do not recommend the game.
YOU CAN NOT SAVE the game. A infinite rogue game that can literally last for days (months, years), you cannot save or autosave on exit is not worth to invest time to play in. The dev need to fix that ASAP!
A little bit of music, a little bit interaction with the community, a little bit of future development info for the game (are you planning to add more recipes and monster lore??) is welcome. It doesn't look like an active ambitious project in the forums atm.
I hope the developer is able to read my review as an encouragement to continue to work on the game.
I do not write reviews often. I play loads of games and if I do not like them I do not bother to write a review. Or if it was offered as an EA title (What I actually think it is) I was waiting to review till release.
Your game deserves a review imho.
Good luck with development.
