WOW!!! I was not expecting to spend three and a half hours playing this! A Pokemon Metroidvania, and it works rather well! Fight monsters, hatch eggs, and build up some rather complex strategies for handling various situations. Every creature seems to be viable, and there are numerous ways to tweak their stats so they shine much further than they already do. The graphics are absolutely charming and wonderfully reminiscent of ye olde super nintendo days. I got Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger vibes every now and then, which I really like.
There are definitely some skill checks fairly early on - I totally bombed my first keeper duel. I had a strategy that worked for normal monster battles, but not for a 6-monster endurance match. This game WILL get you to rethink your strategies every so often, and it seems like each monster you have is going to be important at some point.
While I did enjoy the game for a good chunk of my playthrough, as soon as my monsters hit max level (which is 42 specifically for some stupid reason), it stopped being fun entirely. The skill tree mechanic is very enjoyable, but as soon as you can't upgrade anymore, the game just stops holding back and won't let you progress unless you build an entirely new team for every single fight onward.
If you're playing this game for the Pokemon aspect, you have to play a couple hours before you actually get to a trainer battle. Was really only interested in the full fights, but most of the game is platforming and killing super weak wild monsters. Even on 3x speed it gets kind of tedious. Didn't enjoy it, but it's not a bad game, just not for me. Get it if you're into the idea of a metroidvania with the bonus of pokemon.
its good, it has a mix of adventure and difficulty and luck to get eggs for monsters
I bought this game on sale for 5 dollars and it's literally better than the last 10 triple A $70 titles combined. I would have paid full price had I known this game existed when it came out in 2020.
Pros
- LOADS of monsters to find and fight
- Tons of team comps, synergies to come up with
- Making your own team comp feels very rewarding
- Simple but fun storyline
- Classic metroid style exploring, secrets, side quests
- Art style is incredible
Cons (Almost none, I'm being nitpicky here)
- Main menu UI could use some work, navigating to select a specific monster once you have over a couple dozen can be tedious due to the way the menu works
This game is easily worth $40+, the $20 tag is a bargain and any sale price is an outright steal
A metroidvania mixed with creature collector/battler that has a simple presentation with engaging buildcraft and wonderful quality of life features.
There's a lot of customization for coming up with builds for your monsters themselves and as a team. The game can be quite challenging, which can motivate you to come up with new builds and teams.
The star of the show for me is all of the quality of life features. They really implemented a lot of things that respect your time. No random monsters, monster health being reset after battle, defeat placing you right before a fight meaning no long runback, earnable ability to avoid common fights as well as a consumable item to escape them, a feature to earn monsters slightly lower than your max level monster, the ability to place custom map markers, the option to speed up battles and more. It's so nice that they cut out a lot of the tedium.
Strategic turn-based battles meet non-linear exploration in a beautiful blend of my two favorite genres; JRPGs and Metroidvanias. As a big Pokemon fan, the monster taming and training aspects are enjoyable as well, and I love me a good skill tree. I was a little disappointed that you can't learn all skills with your monsters even at max level, but it does make for more strategy when choosing your build. The writing is kind of stilted at times, but the story is fine overall. Other than that, I have no complaints. I strongly recommend this gem to any fan of RPGs, Metroidvanias, Pokemon, or video games in general.
Great game!
fun to explore, very interesting meta, different then what I was expecting. despite that there are lots of ways to build your team.
enjoyed the story, enjoyed the pixel graphics.
the end game was surprising. I had one team beat most of the legendary keepers once I got it in place. but there are some that are pretty tough and require a changeup
the Champion monsters in endgame were tough and required me to create whole teams to beat them. was very cool to see my builds work.
I would recommend this game, support an indie and have some fun. it lasted a good while.
How many more replays until I am officially finished with this game?
The limit does not exist.
Pretty pixel dungeon crawler where I can collect monsters cute, strange, sexy, ugly, funny in appearance. Unlike most RPGs, a combination of my attachment to my monsters combined with a refined combat system results in me actually equip and stats tweaking. It makes a real difference.
Even with an obsession for some Monsters over others (Tanuki Tanuki Tanuki), taking the time to swap in new monsters, customize them, with new parties and combos is really satisfying. A turn based game where I actually have to pay attention. Rare!
Whose cutest to you?
When you're a Metroidvania and JRPG lover, this game is just right for you. I played it with the original animation speed for a few hours, but then changed it to 3x and finished the game like this.
Moi Rai delivered what I had been wanting, collecting creatures but with more depth than some random numbers generated by the machine and mashing through easy battles. Every monster has a whole skill tree, stats you can use equips like a JRPG character to improve, and story progression locked by monster adventuring abilities which solve puzzles in the Metroidvania fashion. There's consumables that help in battle if you're ever stuck, but I haven't used any. The trainer battle AI is ruthless and efficient, while the random monster packs seem to use random targeting. Honestly I'd prefer if all battles were as tense, and I am grateful you can unlock an area which lets you scale all low level monsters to your team level.
The environmental design is polished but isn't getting any awards, gets the job done and looks good doing it, same with the characters. There's only a few set pieces that really stand out, but its clear the developers have the talent if they had the budget.
Story-wise, it's just moving things along and give some agency to your discovery of new monsters and areas. You're going to be opening chests everywhere with stuff like weapons or food like carrots in them, carrots which somehow are important enough to have rumours surrounding their whereabouts. How or why the world of the Monster Sanctuary is like this, you're not supposed to be thinking about. It's fun to platform and solve the puzzles on your way to opening them, but the contents begin to get stale after a while when it's just more crafting mats or duplicate items.
Manticorb is best monster, fight me.
First and foremost, this game is no-brainer while it's on sale. I would certainly have felt I got my money's worth even if I'd paid full price. For fans of metroidvanias, monster catchers, and rpgs it's an easy recommendation, especially if you like all three.
I'll cover the bad first. The presentation of the game is not exceptional. The writing, dialogue, and music are all just okay, serviceable. There are some tracks that are better than others, but they all follow the 30 sec to 1 minute loop formula. The story is not super memorable but it's at least not super distracting. It is somewhat of a disappointment, if only because it's easy for my mind to imagine what a homerun this game could have been with a bigger budget and more attention paid to details like more animations, more layered environments, more interesting characters and more intricate music. It is what it is.
Here's the good:
The gameplay checks all the right boxes for me and is insanely satisfying. It resembles something more like a party based rpg with skill trees, than it does to something like pokemon, and you can build your team with some intensely cascading synergies. Trying out different approaches is a lot of fun.
The exploration is satisfying as well! I know I backtracked a fair amount but it never felt like a chore. Lots of secrets that can be unlocked with unique monster environmental abilities.
Progressing through the story felt compelling and natural. It was mostly a chill, relaxed experience, but there are definitely moments that require more elbow grease or forethought to get through; quite a few bosses required multiple tries and a handful I needed to do just a bit of level grinding. Just the right amount of challenge for a blind playthrough imo.
Get this game
gosh i love enslaving animals and killing other animals with the animals i have enslaved
I was never a creature collector genre fan so have been avoiding this game for so long. But searching for metroidvanias always showed this game so i thought i should give this a try. Oh boy! im glad i did give it a try.
This game is one of the finest and polished metroidvanias out there. The pixel graphics look gorgeous. The movements is fluid. The creature collection was a fun mechanic. There is a huge variety of monsters to collect each with unique set of abilities. Not only that each monster can be changed to different variants with unique stats changes.
The game offers a lot of strategic experience as it has some challenging fights and you need to optimize your teams for it.
The map exploration was really smooth and each monster collected also give some exploration ability as well. These abilities allows you to further explore the map and there is a lot to explore.
It offers one of the best map feature which i think all metroidvanias should offer, that is, you can add markers on maps and name/ add a note to it. It makes exploration so much fun as you dont have to guess where was that locked chest or where you need to jump higher. This feature should be present in all metroidvanias.
On top of that this game offers other features like new game plus with other modifiers which adds unique relics or randomizers. I have yet to try these features.
This game was such a treat and i highly recommend it to all the fans of this genre. Thanks devs for such a polished game with a lot of depth. BUY IT!!!
Very interesting RPG. Monster sanctuary exploration is metroidvania style with plenty of hidden items, monsters and challenges.
Every monster can be build in different ways and you have to make synergistic teamcomps to succeed. Respeccing your monsters skill tree is dirt cheap with skill resetting potions costing only 300 gold and new monsters can quickly join your ranks as they hatch two levels below your max level monster and there are some items to level them up. Only thing gating your experimentation is (spoiler) ||shift stones, so farm for farmable shifted monster eggs with monster bells after you are sure you want to experiment with specific monster||.
And there is even a PvP community for it (join moi rai games discord if you want to see their current tournaments or just for general help in the game). n.n
I ask myself if it's really a sanctuary if all I do with my monsters is train and use them for traversal and killing my enemies.
Unfortunately I'm too busy leveling up and collecting relics to bother coming up with an answer.
Best Poke-clone I've played.
In a lot of ways I think this game outshines Pokemon in the fact that the combat just felt so refreshing and addicting. I suggest you try out a bunch of different monsters when playing as there are so many different combinations you can create. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the music in this game which made exploring all the extra areas more enjoyable.
Definitely recommend this game to any metroidvania enthusiast as I think this is a sleeper within the category.
Metroidvania pokemon i like it.
I recommend it to everyone who likes pixel graphics and building builds. And the above tags.
The game is worth its money and even more.
very good game and fairly balanced overall if u like turn based battle with a bit of stratergy and RNG it for you
Great game. A lot of different ways to use the monsters in battle.
One of the best Monster/Creature Battling Games out RN. Difficulty is pretty good overall, some points can be decently Challenging. There is only 111 monsters, but the amount of variety you can make a team with is honestly insane, ALL monsters are viable, which is a Big Plus IMO. If you like Creature Collecting/Pokemon I would HIGHLY recommend this.
Fantastic game with deep complexity. I look forward to this studios next game.
This game is an absolute blast. I particularly love the talent tree system for the monsters. Every experience point that you put in matters and can dramatically change how the monster plays and performs. This is as opposed to the trees that we normally see where there are small percent changes in stats for every point.
I thought the world environment art was bad but in reality it's only some areas like forest. The rest though is descent but not ground breaking (I personally liked the sun temple and the newest dinosaur area).
Though gameplay-wise, I really enjoy building my monsters and find the optimal team and combos.
Hell yeah, grabbed this game on sale! This game in my opinion would be even great not on sale too! Attacks are unique and feel like they pack punches. You can pretty much tame all the creatures too which is great even in different colours! You can have many different styles of teams and your not just stuck with one. Nifty little hidden chests and puzzles are great too. I love this game, Don't be afraid of it being a platformy game its not hard in that sense. :)
Oh yeah some tips is to make sure to check out settings, if you find the battles are to slow for you you can crank it up to x3 when your grinding levels and stuff! helps alot :)
Enjoyed this game for the first 4 hours, then the difficulty spike became absurd for me in the Sun Palace.
Grinding my way to Horizon Beach and my team is still getting wrecked when everyone is 15 levels higher than the area level.
I wanted to enjoy this since I'm lacking interest in anything lately, and I love creature collection games, but holy wowzers I refuse to grind my life away just to get by on the easiest difficulty.
I will finish this game because I'm enjoying the story, but sad to say I liked this more when I used cheats :(
Edit: Finished it, the story dropped of and became a typical cliche ending to the villain(s). Disappointed as the build up to the end was engaging, but it dropped off fast.
my true review is neutral. This is A game I want to love and probably would but honestly feels too grindy every time I enter a new area (in a way that is annoying and time consuming rather than fun) and its put me off finishing it. I d suggest getting it on sale.
Strong mash-up of Pokemon and Metroidvanias. Combat is surprisingly deep and well-crafted, with all 111 monsters being viable and well-balanced. Skill trees are deep, with enough build diversity to satisfy even the most hardcore team-building theorycrafters.
Platforming isn't too difficult, and the puzzles are pretty simple, but there's enough variety and hidden secrets to keep me fully engaged for the entire playthrough. There's a solid amount of post-game content, as well, and I'm looking forward to going back and doing NG+ with the Relics game mode next time.
Very good exploration and monster collection game.
The graphic is lovely, the battle system is really nice and original and it has a lot of options to customize your game, so you can have different experiences from one game to the other.
It does a lot of things right (like not needing to grind every monster it you want to change your whole team at basically any time).
It also does a couple of things wrong (like having a spike in difficulty towards the end, at least if you want to complete the whole thing, side-quests included).
But all-in-all, it is very satisfying and fun.
Definitely recommended if you love a challenge.
Excellent. This game is excellent. A triumph of pixel art, metroidvania, and monster taming.
Worth it at any price. I loved this game.
Good for those RPG lovers who want a decent amount of grind and challenge. Sometimes a little but too hard on the difficulty curve especially vs alchemists and rivals.
-Beautiful art style
-Good story
-Wide range of monsters
-Good combat
-Not an easy game
Definitely a pokemonish metroid blend which i really enjoyed. A little bit of grinding but the game also does a good job with items and such helping with that. Lots of viable team comps where you can basically make anything work with the right items/strategy/comp. Really enjoyed it.

This game is amazing. I am so glad that I was able to find this gem. I really recommend everyone to try it out. I only wish I found out about this game years ago.
Pokemon meets Castlevania.
An excellent game with beautiful sprite work and tons of strategic freedom in regards to team building. If you enjoyed building teams for competitive battle, Monster Sanctuary has very well designed mechanics and monster skills that will have you experimenting with the entire roster to find your ultimate team. Aggros, sweepers, stall, status DOTs, combo, bulk teams, you name it. The mons have skill trees too - what is there not to like about that?!
The platformer & puzzles aspect are relatively light and not too difficult for Metroidvania rookies. Although it may take 40-50 hours, the game is very easy to 100% for those achievement hunters out there. Remember to place a map marker in an area to find out how much % you are missing!
Overall, an awesome game with 3x3 monster battling mayhem and a dash of platforming action.
too hard, if i want a hard game i would have payed darksouls
This game is like Pokémon meets platforming. The story is becoming interesting. I recommend this to creature collecting fans.
I like the monsters battling. i like the diversity in monsters, skill, compositions, and items.
I did not like the platforming. Felt very unrewarding to do a time trial platforming task, and to get a basic item. I eventually stopped doing all platforming task because the items never ended up being worth it.
Decent amount of fun overall.
Monster Sanctuary is a great mix of exploration and strategy. The monster designs are unique, the combat is fun, and there’s a lot to discover. It’s super satisfying to build your team and experiment with different tactics. Highly recommend if you like RPGs with some depth!
Worth the price, a good monster collection game for people who likes to play such game.
fun to explore and challenging fights. the story is cool too. the skill trees are really cool and fun to mess with.
Great game with deep mechanics and uniquely enjoyable exploration for the genre
I bought this game 2019, played it in 2020 and finished what they had before the full release, thought it was a nothing more than a 2D pokemon rip-off. Fast forward to 2024 and I pick it up again one night after wondering what game to play next. To my (quite happy) surprise I really enjoy this game and I think it found it's own unique story and gameplay. I love the game mechanics and art style along with the bits and pieces of puzzles and platforming that's mixed in. Thank for the fun game :)
its wonderfull
I am so hooked on this game. Its a really nice balance of combat and exploration and the world is really cool so far. although it is annoying when i just wanna go through an area and then im forced into a battle because i touched a monster but all in all, i get that it helps with leveling up and game process so i wont flame that too much im just a baby and wanna go run around areas that are too high level LMAO. Overall, really cute looking game, the style is nice to look at, and the combat is fun, and the exploration is even more fun :3
very nice :)
it is fun
Amazing gameplay, deep mechanics. story's generic, but still 5/5 game
When i saw this game i was intrigued but the artstyle and platforming kinda threw me off. I'm glad i was proven wrong about this game and that its actually a masterpiece. The story is cool, the lore is awesome, the platforming is fun af and utilizes the monsters in a unique way for a metroidvania! The music is awesome! The monsters are cool af. Finally a monster game that has a LION as a main that doesnt SUCK!
10/10 would buy full price!
