This is a very solid RTS game that isn't too complicated while still having a lot of strategy involved. I would definitely recommend this version over older versions, though if you already have AoE2 in some other form (like the 2013 edition for example) I wouldn't recommend getting this game.
like the chess of real time strategy games. Timeless, well balanced, complex, high skill ceiling, etc. Only issue I find is the UI is outdated (i mean makes sense) but it needs to be added with all the UI modern games provide generally. For example chat can be improved, instead of the archaic system its on rn. If the UI/chat/hotkeys make more sense (i.e show each letter assigned to each action) the game would probably be impossible to improve outside of providing new civilizations once in a while.

I recently decided to play again, and I hate how much of a time sync it is. There are much better reviews of AoE2 and AoE2: Definite Edition written by others, so I will keep it short. The quality of life improvements and overall gameplay are fantastic.
I played AoE2 back when they came out (Age of Conquerors and Age of Kings). I absolutely love the additional campaigns added in the definitive edition (DLC or otherwise). I only play the campaigns, making them the most crucial part of this game. I do like some level of historical accuracy with some liberties here and there. I haven't encountered blatant anachronisms yet, but it will be a shame if noticeable ones crop up.

For me, this game is a trip down memory lane. For others, like new players, Age of Empires II is easy to get into and easy to play, and also offers a variety of different ways to play the game. Relive historical campaigns, or make your own skirmishes, Age of Empires II is a must for gamers who enjoy RTS like this.
This game is an absolute classic and still playable in 2025! Building cities without limitations and amassing an army for large scale battles are just two of the most enjoyable aspects of this game. A player can choose to go in strategic and perform sneak attacks, flank their economy, or head straight in with a variety of units. I've always loved the balancing act it takes to achieve a victory and no other game has been able to capture the draw of this game. Must have in your library!

This is basically what you would get if you took Ensemble Studios' masterpiece and added some new DLC to it. It's unfortunate they changed the voice actors for the narrators as the original voice acting was absolutely stellar while the new ones are only par.
I would and have wholly recommended this game to my friends as it is definitely a faithful recreation of the best Real Time Strategy ever created.
Ensemble created an empire which stood the test of time, now Relic is bringing it back to former glories.
Ich weiß, heutzutage werfen einem alle möglichen Spiele Nostalgie um die Ohren, aber Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition ist der König dieser Kategorie. Ich hab das Original damals bis zur Erschöpfung gespielt – LAN-Partys mit lauwarmen Pizzen und 14-Stunden-Schlachten. Jetzt, in der Definitive Edition, fühlt es sich an, als hätte jemand diese Erinnerungen genommen, sie poliert und mir mit moderner Grafik und QoL-Verbesserungen zurückgegeben.
Das Spiel ist eine perfekte Mischung aus klassischem Gameplay und moderner Technik. Der Soundtrack hat immer noch diesen epischen Vibe, und die neuen Zivilisationen sorgen dafür, dass es nie langweilig wird. Außerdem: Multiplayer läuft wie geschmiert. Meine Dorfbewohner bedanken sich, dass sie nicht mehr in pathfinding-Alpträumen stecken bleiben.

The game mechanics are great, and the amount of thought and details that went in this game are simply amazing! My favorite strategy game of all time!
Age of empires 2 is an older game, but a good one. I used to play when it first came out and I'm glad to see the game and the community is still going strong.
i know this game because my father used to play it very often when he was unemployed and i'm still in elementary school, i remember i got beaten up when i "accidentally" deleted this game.

Amazing game even after 25 years of playing!!! Still learning something new each time I play. A must have for fun against AI, family and friends or online community. Looking forward to trying some mods too!
It is a very fun game, easy to learn, if you enjoy history i highly reccomend this game, The downloadable content is very enjoyable as well. 10/10 highly reccmoned this game to a friend or someone who would be intrested in history based stragety.
I don't know why they made this again, but I'm happy that it runs well even when you have 6 people with 500 war elephants each, and I like that there's like ten million relics all over the map. Keeps you from stagnating in a long game. It's good.
Loved this game in the old days. The updated graphics without any changes in the game mechanics (improved AI, maybe) is very welcome!
Really fun game you can enjoy however you like. If you like RTS games this one is very good with still a pretty dedicated following if you're concerned about multiplayer. AI can be quite challenging on the more difficult settings and there are numerous campaign missions as well if you like single player.
I played AOE3 before AOE2. I actually prefer the AOE3's faster pace, in AOE2 you spend more time on your economy. In AOE2 economy is slightly more important than your military micro and macro. In AOE3 you just let the villagers do their thing. If you are playing as ottomans in AOE3, you don't even have to worry about forgetting to create villagers as that is automated too. You can fully focus on military.
It's a great game, much better than 1 and 4. Though for me if i were to play multiplayer or skirmish i'd much prefer to play mythology or star wars: galactic battleground, which is a modified aoe2 with it's own aspects, over playing aoe2. also the dlc is definitely overpriced, $15 each is way too much and I believe that $8 as the nonsale price is more acceptable. I go by dlc price vs full game price should show how much content it provides. i.e. a $30 game with $15 dlc, then the dlc should be about half the full game's worth in content and $3 each for icons is way too much. I still hold out on a galactic battleground de, but for now expanding forces mod does a good enough job as a definitive edition. The other option is 3. Though 3 doesn't feel like an aoe game it's still good as it's own game.
Please bring back decaying system in original AOE2. The decaying of dead body to skeleton was the most immersive design in original AOE2, compared to other competitors like red alert and star craft. All such details made AOE2 not only a video game, but an master piece on canvas. Please do not ruin our memory.
Game wont even launch if you're offline. It really sucks that such amazing game is being managed by leeches.
remember playing this game when i was 9 it was fun back in 1999 and with all these updates and new stuff im talking about years of fun
It's not this game specifically, but the ENTIRE game franchise of Age of Empires was first introduced to me and my siblings when we were children by my dad. Learning how to play this game with him while having to have two of the same game CD's for two different computers was always a joy, but this game became a core memory. When I became more serious in gaming, I asked my dad what would he do if we were able to play Age again, and he stated it would definitely be something! Well, to my surprise, I found it on Steam and mentioned it to him. We pulled any computer we could find to see if it could run and he bought the game for himself and I. We played and it stayed up most of the night! Needless to say, this is a game that brought our family closer all the time, and I HIGHLY recommend it!
What an excellent recreation of the original Age of Empires 2!
Not only does the game look better and modern with its 3D model and effects graphics (compared to the classic spritesheets), but the game also plays smoother. On top of that, the gameplay and UI when playing are also improved tremendously!
Alongside, you get all of the HD Edition expansions for free alongside with the raw game, this version of AoE2 is worth the purchase overall. Also the new Definitive Edition civilizations are all fun to play and make the game feel fresh.
The only real negative thing I could say is that the DLCs are a bit expensive for how much they add to the game so I recommend waiting for a big sale.
Besides that, this Age of Empires deserves to be called Definitive Edition: just improvements in all of its aspects.
Games crashes on startup since an update, many people are reporting this issue and it seems nothing is being done about it because it still works for some people.

I had a lot of enjoyment with this title, particularly due to the large scale of the maps and the satisfying progression from a tiny settlement to a true empire. While I usually prefer more modern settings, like the one explored in Age of Empires 3, this game is still incredibly fun and engaging.
I tried the multiplayer mode, but I found it very challenging as it heavily emphasizes micromanagement and maintaining a constantly improving economy. For the most part, I stick to the single-player campaigns, where I had my fair share of fun and memorable experiences.
The graphics adopt a beautiful drawing-style aesthetic that enhances the game’s charm. This visual style often inspires me to design my towns in ways that look visually pleasing, making it feel as much like a town management game as a strategy war game. Overall, it’s a very enjoyable experience.

I have owned this game for 5 years now and out of nowhere there's now a new EULA to sign or you can't play the game. I don't care what is on the EULA. What care about is agreement was added to the game after I purchased it and already had my agreements beforehand. I'm getting sick and tired of companies thinking they can just add new end user agreements to their software and did not use service if you don't sign them now in their initial end user agreement there's probably some stupid stipulation that lets them do this but just because they can do it doesn't mean they should is morally irrehensible it's a horrible president and it's just downright annoying. And I do love this game but now I unfortunately despise whichever egg head decide to add this to it even if it was with the best of intentions I already bought the game I've already played it I don't want any new deals so **** off.
Genuinely feel this may be one of the top five best games of all times. If you are a (strategy) gamer, you -must- play this game at least once (especially with or against friends)
Zero bugs, incredible campaigns and History lessons just by playing the campaigns. Unbelievably fun vs AI scenarios, Multiplayer online community. Plus a lot of great feeling nostalgia if you played AOE in the 90s! 2 THUMBS UP

I honestly love this game, but it's ridiculous to throw in 3 "free" dlcs in order to justify raising the price of entry like that.

Wow, how greedy can they get when you used to be able to just buy the base game.... now waiting on a sale is worthless, i wanted to give the base game to a friend so we could play now is not posible since i have to pay 34 bucks for it....
A classic game brought back the right way. It really shows that the developers themselves love this game. I've been playing it ever since the CD version first came out and it's really great that 25 years later, it is still being worked on.
There are many campaigns that you can delve into, easily more than 100h worth of playtime. And they even gave the 3 oldest DLCs for free recently as a celebration of its anniversary. If you like strategy games, this is the best game you can get.
I have bought AoEII probably 5 times now over its different iterations, and this is by far the best.
Not all of the DLC's are winners, but the ones that are really expand the game. And they keep expanding it even years later!
pathing sucks so incredibly bad, a mechanic that lies at the very core of the game, units have a mind of their own in the worst way possible. If you play at any respectable level and above, the game has been absolutely unplayable for about 1.5 years now. Devs are supposed to be working on the issue, thus far they've managed to make regress, not progress. I think they went too far, who cares about all the extra civs you've made when the game itself is just not fun anymore?! If you haven't yet, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. GREAT FOR 20+ YEARS, COMPLETELY RUINED
A golden classic. Loads of fun to play alone and especially with friends. If you enjoy a strategic base-building game, this one's for you 100%.
It's the best RTS ever. Yes, they've been trying to squeeze us with constant DLCs, but the game is great. My only major complaint is how bugged game lobbies are.

Long time fan of the series, but somehow the AI pathfinding has gone from painful, to BEYOND retarded.
Moving to a location with 50+ units through somewhat narrow paths results me staring at the screen in baffled confusion as my units scatter like billard balls on a good break.
Since movement is, idk, critical to these games, this is inexcusable
Shocked to see the developers of this game made one for mobile devices called "Age of Empires Mobile" Which is literally a straight up cash grab that doesn't relate AT ALL to any Age of Empires games....

Free DLC for people who owned the game before this month? Very nice, far FAR better than most companies that still have you spend 20 bucks for 15 yo DLC (I'm looking at you Activision)
And even if it is now included with new purchases at a higher price, it is at half the price, AND it will all be discounted when ther are steam sales. Nice.
