Age of Empires II (Retired) ...
I think it's time for Microsoft to 'retire' instead.
This version of the game is still better than definitive (though not better than conquerors)
One of the GOAT games. Remember playing this after high school and it still holds up after all these years. Cant recommend enough if you haven't played it before. One of the true classics!
AOE II. One of the classics of classics. Never gets old. Enjoy it forever.
how many times do i have to buy this game? i bought it 2 times already, and i can't play the latest version..
This game belongs in the Hall of Classics, alongside Sid Meir's Pirates and Diablo. It will be played by our children's children.
Great game. They retired it so you have to buy a new version. MONEY GRAB.
Still one of the best classic RTS-games out there.
If you want to revisit AoE2 and have it as it was back then in 2000, I would recommend picking up this HD version here.
But if your looking to get the DLC and QoL, go with the Definitive Edition instead.
One of the greatest RTS games - if not one of the greatest video games - ever made, presented in as close to the form it released in as you can get on Steam. I've probably sunk hundreds of hours into this game since I was young and had the original on disk. While the Definitive Edition might feature better graphics and a slew of content, as well as a large multiplayer community, it does have some drawbacks and changes to the overall flow of play in places, as well as unavoidable issues like a larger file size and stricter hardware requirements, and odd choices like inferior music over the OG. The original sprites aren't as pretty to look at but they have their own charm, even after all this time. I would personally recommend the HD Edition, not necessarily over DE, but as a supplement/alternative to it.
building your Village is fun and getting ready for battle is chaotic but very entertaining
I enjoy that the game can be single player and customized to meet time constraints.
A MUST PLAY for RealTimeStrategy & Medieval enthusiasts. It doesn't get more classic than this game. The AI NPCs are fairly good in this game if you want to test you strategy in a game that's kinda like civ but its not turn based and you wont progress into the future all that much just up to the imperial age. Cant recommend this game enough especially for people just getting into strategy games.
Not my type of game personally but it's very good if you love strategy games, this is what every shitty mobile game wished it could be.
Playing this game is incredibly fun. It brings a sense of nostalgia and is not too difficult to pick up how to play. Playing with friends is a great experience
Loved this game back in the day! So glad to see a remaster (even if the remaster is a bit old now) It always keeps me coming back for another round. Great game, great nostalgia when playing too!
Gather, build, expand, advance, battle, win or die.
Age of Empires is one of the good old games that will hold a dear place in many people's hearts as one of the most addictive civilization manager game ever. Takes time to learn, and even more time to master.
Building your Village is fun and getting ready for battle is stratagizing and also entertaining
The AoE 2 (2013) game keeps with the original Age of Empires 2 feel and is exactly how i remember it way back in 2001. This is a way better choice if you love Age of Empire 2 the classic! (No offence to the Definitive Edition - but this is a way better version).
Super glad that this was brought back as an HD Edition. I'm also glad to see that they left everything mostly untouched.
Even the new AI is optional. Game itself is a classic, well balanced and fun game to LAN.
Classic game. We do not need any remakes, new fancy 3D graphics, this one is the best.
One of the most polished but most poorly designed RTSes ever made, despite all of its window dressings it ultimately amounts to a glorified and hour(s) long game of rock-paper-scissors, wherein sometimes those options don't even work as claimed. If you want to try a classic from the same era, go play Starcraft instead; if you want something of a similar scale, take a look at Supreme Commander. Both are entirely superior.
Played this game a lot when I was young. It's one of the best at It's time. Still fun!
the best game ever. I play this game since 2000 i have all the collections in dvd and cd edition up to age of empires III
Some twice.
too hard to start on windows 10 it just says launching and never starts
What can i say? A classic! I remember spending hours with my homies playing this... hours of fun and conquer
No hay palabras para describir lo que significa este juego para mi. No soy gamer. No suelo dedicarle tiempo a cualquier tipo de juego en general. Pero de las pocas veces que lo hago, este esta en primer lugar. Tiene todo lo que me gusta disfrutar. No lo puedo recomendar porque todos tenemos gustos diferentes.
classic RTS that has evoked many a great multiplayer session of fales, foibles, and feats!
Akin to the original warcraft!
As fun as I remember it. The Forgotten campaigns can be a bit buggy in my experience, but it remains one of my favorite games of all time.
I don't own this game. I don't recommend this game to other players. You'll only see this 52 times because that's how many times I jumped back on the hamster wheel.
Legit my favorite RTS. I used to play this way back before Steam. Each faction is unique and different. There's strategy, but its easy to get into. Maybe the hard part is when you get serious and start going into build orders, and hotkeys, then it gets kind of sweaty.
It's an older game so the graphics aren't as good as newer games, but it's still a good game. I enjoy playing it :)
Classic. Challenging. Not too complex. Historical. This game puts my brain in a theta wave state.
One of the greatest games of all time and it still runs perfectly on modern hardware! You can't ask for more. I remember playing this game as a teenager and loving it. It might be the only game I played when I was young that I still enjoy playing just as much now in my 40s. Definitely worth it, whether you played back then or not!
Really enjoy the gameplay and hard difficulty level is exactly that. Years of playing has led to me being very good at the original game, but the expansions can be a bit different. Most are easy, but theres one or two that are still a struggle.
You don't play a game for more than 3000 hours for no reason, its a classic that keeps me coming back. Castle Blood Arena is where its at if you like custom scenarios!
I've been playing this game for many years and still enjoy the graphics, challenges and familiarity.
Gameplay Mechanics: 10/10
Narrative: 8/10
Graphics: 7/10
Sound and Music: 9/10
Replayability: 10/10
Innovation: 7/10
Age of Empires II: HD Edition is a faithful remaster of one of the most beloved strategy games of all time. Released in 2013, it updates the classic gameplay with improved visuals, Steam integration, and expanded modding support, while retaining the core mechanics that made the original a masterpiece. For longtime fans, this edition is a deeply nostalgic experience, evoking fond memories of building empires and battling friends in LAN parties.
The gameplay mechanics are timeless, offering a perfect balance between base-building, resource management, and tactical combat. The variety of civilizations, each with unique units and bonuses, ensures a rich strategic experience. The core mechanics remain as addictive and rewarding as ever, earning a perfect 10/10 for gameplay.
The narrative is presented through a series of historical campaigns that take players through epic stories like the rise of Genghis Khan and the exploits of Joan of Arc. While not groundbreaking in storytelling, the campaigns are engaging and offer historical context that enhances the experience. Narrative scores a solid 8/10.
Graphically, the HD Edition updates the visuals with higher resolution textures and improved lighting. While these enhancements are welcome, they don’t drastically overhaul the game’s dated appearance. Graphics earn a respectable 7/10 for the functional improvements.
The sound and music remain iconic, with the original soundtrack beautifully remastered. The stirring score and immersive sound effects perfectly capture the atmosphere of medieval battles, enhancing the nostalgic charm of the game. Sound and music earn a 9/10.
Replayability is unmatched. The sheer number of civilizations, custom scenarios, multiplayer modes, and modding tools ensure countless hours of engaging gameplay. Whether reliving campaigns or competing online, players will find endless reasons to return. Replayability earns a perfect 10/10.
Innovation in the HD Edition lies primarily in its quality-of-life updates, mod support, and seamless online play through Steam. While these improvements are valuable, they don’t fundamentally change the game, earning innovation a 7/10.
In summary, Age of Empires II: HD Edition is a nostalgic yet fresh experience that celebrates one of the greatest strategy games ever made. It successfully modernizes a classic without compromising what made it great. For both veterans and newcomers, it remains an essential title for fans of real-time strategy games.
Let's face it, this is the classic. It's not just the atmosphere of it, it's also either comfortable or exciting, according to how you change the game parameters. You can have a quick game, or a heroic struggle, at your whim. I also like playing with an AI ally ... except when they keep on pestering me with "Wood, please ..."
This game is super fun and allows you to learn concepts about economics through an interactive play
Nostalgia at its finest. First RTS I ever played and still great to this day. I enjoy this version more then the newer. Great title for the beginning of a serious RTS addiction!
They killed the game in order to make you buy a new version that is worse and more expensive than this one. If you can get your hands on this game somewhere, don't hesitate and you will never regret it. I still keep the CD of the original edition, which work without problems. And I've been coming back to this game every year, for decades. The highest recommendation.
Must have for RTS fans. it is a classic for a reason. great game play with many factions, stories and mods available.
One of the first games I got, and it's still holds up even after these years.
One of my favorite games of all time. Just as fun playing at 36 as it was playing at 12.
Apparently, this game is "retired"(not available anymore on Steam?). I guess we are the lucky ones who got it in our steam libary. Poor souls who missed out.
I enjoy playing against the computer which gives me multiple scenarios to go up against.
first computer game i played in my life prob around yr 1998. games just as good now as i remember it being then, kinds slow paced compared to modern games but altogether still worth the money and def worth playing.
I've played this game with my family since I was a child and I still love this game. I love getting immersed in the societies and civ building is always a blast. Loads of maps, settings, civilisations, and then campaigns and custom maps to satisfy you.
I love to be able to command troops and artillery into battle, and strategize plans of attack build, through trial and error lol Thank you
A very warm and beautiful game involving the basics of war in the medieval times.
Its a great strategy game. Simulates real places. I really like the map editor. You can create your own map from scratch and play it. And can team up or play against or with other people that have the game. The campaign section is pretty neat as well. There are cheat codes in the game that can help you quite a bit. However, if you use them your achievements wont be recognized IE trophies. I've played this game for many, many hours and I never get bored. There's always a way to alter the game play to make it more interesting or challenging. It can be easy enough for a younger child or a novice. And challenging enough for a gamer.
