Old classic but to HD and multiplayer works!
the reson my faviort game star wars battlegrounds exiest is cus of this game so yes i love this game too
One of, If not the best Real Time Strategy Game ever developed. This game has eaten years of my life from how good it is.
While yes, the Definitive edition is clearly the superior version in terms of quality and content, The HD edition is still a great purchace if your computer can't run DE, or you can't afford it. Though keep in mind servers are usually emptier now
It allows you to be creative. It encourages you to learn about the history of the world. It makes to think.
It allows you to let off steam when you are tired and need to "get away from all your worries. I would recommend it to anyone of any age or generation. It teaches you that you can't have everything you want
when and where you want it. You have to consider others. It teaches you that you an only have things if you work for them and plan ahead. I never tire of Age of Empires.
This is the best Age of Empires incarnation if you crawled out from a rock and have never heard of this franchise before. It is a city builder with a very heavy focus on technology advancement, resource gathering, and most importantly combat and military. It is very easy to lose hours of your day on this game. There are quite a few different civilizations each with their own perks and a few extra military unit types.
There are several campaigns you can play or you can skirmish against AI, real players, or a combination of them both. You can team up against players or AI as well.
Every time I try to play this game I get some kind of error. Total waste of money and time.
this will always be my favorite game. this is the one that stated it all and is wonderfully simple and complex at the same time. straight forward game play and clear cut goals and senerios.
Unplayable even if you have a high end pc, the unit pathfinding calculation will ruin your fps, its a single thread engine, you will get lag spikes every other second, and if your pop reaches 200+ total in game fps will be constantly under 20
The best AoE and it never gets old, with friends or without to play with
It really doesn't get any better than this for RTS games. my whole childhood was this game and I still play it now. If you've never heard of it or played it, it's an absolute must play.
I have played this game for many more hours than recorded here. Creative world-building and kingdom conquering at its finest. I've learned a lot about staying on tasks from my villagers. They rock!
Age of Empires II HD Edition is without a doubt one of the best games in the franchise. It brings back that huge nostalgia of the classic 1, Rise of Rome and especially 2!
The game works very well, pure high definition, VERY fun, VERY ENJOYABLE... And very strategic by the way!
Not to mention the online mode which is incredible (as long as you have an acceptable ping to play with other players, if not... They kick you out of the lobby) I recommend it, but if the price is too high for you... I suggest you wait for a possible sale!
I play almost exclusively with the tech x256 mod on. Very fun. Base game is pretty fun, but if you play with the x256 tech mod, you can get up to some pretty crazy shenanigans. I like to play as Vikings and research the hell out of Berserkergang so my Berserks heal at a ridiculous rate and become nigh on invincible. Also any solid cavalry civ that can research bloodlines for 3k HP cav units. Or Mayans with the unique tech to add +40 hp to eagle warriors...x256, of course. You get the idea. It gets pretty silly. Try it out.
I've been playing this game for 25 years. It's never gotten old.
I played this growing up and still to this day I love everything about this game.
IM eating at cheese steak jimmy's while robin hood and the lumberjack rock on.
Great game. I used to play the original low def version, so really like the HD graphics and new campaigns. Good simple RTS.
Great game been playing it years now and still not bored with it
easy to learn, addictive and very simple gameplay
It's been decades since I first played this game, and I still revisit it at least once a year. For me, it's perfection.
its a modern day classic, It stands out as the best top down franchise in my opinion
Great game, lots to learn in terms of the different races and their strengths etc. Good for strategy and building civilisations
The greatest RTS of all time, still holds up after all this time
Works well, the only thing is that when entering text into any text field it is not visible until confirming.
very good in all regards, a timeless classic
Grew up playing this game and I love coming back to it periodically for a hit of nostalgia.
an All time classic.. this game is perfect. 60 hours is just steam I have Thousands of hours going back to disc play,.,,
One of the classic Key-Stone RTS games. Everything from the controls, UI, music, and graphics of this game are exceptional. And for anyone 30+yo; this will take you back to your childhood! <3
This game has been ruined. It seems that every update makes the game slower to load and less responsive in game play. It is time that such updates were reviewed and removed.
This game was my childhood. I played against the Viper in the old multiplayer and he beat me so bad I have never forgotten it. I remember I would ask other players if they knew Viper because I wanted a rematch. That guy is literally the world champion now. He is one of my heroes.
Знаком с игрой три месяца. Было тяжело учиться играть после варкрафта 3. Очень интересные кампании.
Visuals 6/10
Audio 8/10
Controls 9/10
Story 10/10
Gameplay 10/10
Best feature: Level Editor
Worst feature: Got outdated by definitive edition
Replayibility: Yes
Multiplayer: If the services are still online then yes
Price 1/10: Definitive edition exists and if you dont plan to play it with friends rather upgrade to that , if you want to play this out of nostalgia search up shady sites to get it for cheaper or wait for a sale
The Price and Age of Empires 2 Definitive edition being a thing are the only reason for a thumbs down.
I just played against AIs decades ago as a kid. Putting that CD in the CD drive always gave me such a thrill! I'd always build my unstoppable army of longbowmen (go British!) and trebs before decimating my Standard-difficulty foes. Now I'm learning actual build orders to play against real people, and it's even more fun!!
A fantastic, remake of a classic RTS. Medieval, strategy, town building - it's well worth some hours of fun.
My absolute favourite game and the only game i play.
A classic rts game, that deserves to be remembered. Due to the sheer amount of content made by the community it still might be worth a try even with the remaster being out.
what does Retired mean, does that mean i cant play this game anymore?
After playing the hell out of AoE 1 I skipped AoE 2 back in the day, went to Age of Mythology, then 3, then 4, then back to 2. Feels a bit weird and I'm probably not in the best position to be commenting on it as I don't recall AoE 1 very well beyond the now apocryphal cheats such as rocket-launching cars, and so can't really comment on the upgrades AoE 2 has to offer. In any case though, that was, like, 25 years ago, so most people reading this review nowdays will be coming backwards like I did.
AoE 2 still holds up though, and has an enormous amount of campaign content. There are certain elements of the game that were tweaked in future releases - the default speed of your population is painfully slow and the enemies are unforgiving. You will be constantly harangued by small groups of enemy forces which can't obliterate you, but are just enough to whittle your numbers and slow the pace of the game down as you suffer near-constant attrition. Stamping them out is like trying to take out a cockroach nest with a hammer and enemy villagers are devious - you'll painstakingly swat three enemy stables along with 10 watchtowers surrounding them only to turn round and find they've built two more stables behind you.
Missions can take 45-60 mins, which feels a little long to me, especially given that much of this is due to the amount of time it takes to travel or for units to bring down buildings. More often than not it left me tired after a single mission, rather than desperate for more. But as the games in the series go I'd say this is the best offering besides Age of Mythology, which holds a special place in my heart for its slightly faster gameplay, mission variety, and fantasy units. AoE 2 is a lot of juggling plates, which, while frustrating at times, also tends to mitigate that 'scissors-paper-rock' unit balance that so many RTS games fall into. When it hits right it feels a little deeper, and thus, a little more rewarding.
Age of Empires II is the best RTS ever made. I don't say this for nostalgia, though I have been playing since launch, I say this having tried dozens of others and all fail to hold my attention.
once you buy they charge for all sorts of upgrades for you to progress through the Game
I love this game! I have played for days all in all, not the steam one but I had a download that I purchased years ago and my friend and I made a network and we had 2 Netbooks and played both ways on a 6 hour drive trip. The best Resource Management and dupe labor game. Always look for dupes who have finished their task and are standing around because this game needs everyone to work and be happy and you go through the ages
I've played AoE for decades now and continue to play it just about every day. The game is never the same two times running, so it keeps me on my toes. Occasionally, I'll enjoy an online game, either with a family member or a friend who lives in another city. It's a great way to stay in touch AND in control of the world!
Bwahahahahahahahaha!
My brother and I aren't able to start a multiplayer game after hours of trying. Would not recommend.
Felky Fun Meter
|-|---------| [1/10] Meh fun!
Nostalgia-Goggles is a powerful tool.
As someone who never played this in my childhood compared to 99% of the other reviews I thought it was clunky and awkward to play.
Only reason I had some fun is because I was fighting my friends and we made jokes about the state of the game.
Each game offers a different set of challenges
Every so often there comes a game that CHANGED gaming FOREVER... This game here is just one such game. After this came a SLEW of "copycats" yet almost NONE of them even lived up to even HALF as good as this one did. Now OVER 2 DECADES later (I owned the ORIGINAL DOS BASED VERSION OF THIS GAME, heck even STILL have the HUGE FOLD OUT POSTER of all the different nations & the ORIGINAL GAMING BOOK that was SO complete you never needed anything else to play the game!) I STILL AM PLAYING THIS GAME WHEN THE MOOD STRIKES ME!!! So for $20 U.S. you can spend DAYS still playing the same actual game scenario!!! THAT - MASSIVE - BANG - FOR - YOUR - BUCK in my book!!! And I DIDN'T HAVE AN "HD" version when it first came out... I just had EVGA Graphics!!! That's GOTTA count for something right?!!!
I play this game way too much. This was one of my very first PC games back when I had a very old computer that was not good for much else. Even though over 20 years later, there are more modern versions, I still fall back to this to relax, unwind and clear my mind. It's always fun, always new ways to enjoy the game and no matter what will always be nostalgic and a favourite.
If you're a fan of real-time strategy games or have a passion for historical warfare, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is a must-play.
The game enhances the classic AoE experience with stunning 4K graphics, improved gameplay mechanics, and a wide range of civilizations to command. From constructing your empire to managing resources and commanding armies in epic battles, every moment is filled with strategy and excitement.
The additional campaigns and refined AI make it even more immersive, while multiplayer options ensure endless replayability. Whether you're revisiting the nostalgia of the original or diving in for the first time, this edition strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern gaming.
If you're into strategic depth, historical themes, and epic battles, this is the game for you.
Classic RTS title, best in the business. Historically accurate and fun since it first came out.
It's a classic, what more can I say? There's a reason why its popularity has endured this long. When I get bored, I tweak settings, customize further, and create more scenarios with my friends. I think it's a decent game to play alone, and a great game to play with others. I think that the newer, definitive editions are more streamlined and better to play, but I still enjoy this version.
