Discover surreal places from hell and enter 16 different nightmares. Each scenario is set in a unique world with its own atmosphere. Music and surreal places recreate a creepy atmosphere from your worst nightmares. This isn't a game about jumpscares; the horror stems from the atmosphere itself. Scenes are as surreal as in a dream where nothing makes sense. You walk as a tormented soul and discover disturbing places from the subconscious. Whenever you wake up, you return to the wheel of misfortune which will choose yet another nightmare for you to roam. The nightmares never end, since whenever you wake up you go to another nightmare.

nightmare simulator somehow fails to deliver meaningfully on such a simple premise. the gameplay consists of meandering around surreal scenes, usually trying to solve a simple puzzle in order to return to the level select screen. the game leans hard into the 'nightmare' aspect of its name, with levels including a scene in which the player is chased by people telling the player to kill themselves, or another where the player must solves a puzzle (which was broken when i attempted it) in a room where every tile is textured with a face texture sheet. while this sounds like a reasonable attempt at a nightmare simulator on paper, in reality the game seems like a first attempt at making a GMod horror map, with simple textures spread across huge parts of levels, poorly mixed audio which makes the game more headache inducing than unpleasant, and what seems to be a massive proliferation of stock assets - discernable by the fact that every game-specific asset is either a simple cube or a sphere, with a png spread over every surface to serve as texturing (such as one level where every block was textured with word art saying "die". it is also worth mentioning that roughly half of the level select options will take you to the "kill yourself" level, which can only be beaten by closing the game.
on a technical level, the game runs terribly. as mentioned earlier, the games audio is mixed so poorly that its attempt at discomforting the player (e.g. loud breathing playing on the title screen) come across as annoyances. the game has an incredibly low FOV, seemingly an attempt to make the player feel claustrophobic that again, just annoys the player when performing the simple tasks necessary to solve the game's handful of puzzles. this FOV and the game's asset choice also combine to create an effect where assets that follow the player (such as the people in the "kill yourself" level) feel more like pop-up ads than diegetic threats to the player.
10/10 prime tier stuff for making a clickbait youtube video called like "top 10 scariest video games from the deep web"

Nightmare Simulator is a set of 16 Walking Simulator scenes, most of which you passively observe some surreal scene taking place before being warped back to its ominous "Wheel of Fortune" esque wheel to make your next selection of which spot it lands on next (Vanna White not included.)
In most instances, the situations you find yourself in are passive, surreal scenes taking place, including one depicting a bunch of insect-like creatures approaching you as you are unable to move or another rummaging around the outside of a farmhouse with a trippy sky made of many colors and a texture of peacock feathers on the ground at your feet.

In most of these levels you usually don't have to do anything and just kind of wander around looking at things until the moment ends, which isn't to say you aren't required to do a couple of puzzles in some of them. In one you gather a few logs of wood and a lighter before jumping into a rudimentary kiln and apparently lighting yourself on fire. The game is all very surreal and it often abruptly switches from scene to scene which can be jarring, but I think this also reflect its theme of dreams well in that they abruptly shift in tone.
In one of the more disturbing and unclear levels of the game, spikes shoot up from the floor as blades swing back and forth ahead of you, before a bunch of binary is read aloud by a Portal-esque Glados voice and then a loop of someone saying "Kill yourself. Kill yourself. Kill yourself. Kill yourself." is played over and over.

I had no idea what I was meant to do in this scene of the game (beyond obliging its narrator somehow on one of the traps nearby, maybe?) but contacting the dev in the forum (which they promptly responded to) revealed that all I had to do to progress in this level was sit there and wait for 3 minutes until the scene ended. While the effect of the level is undeniably disturbing and unrelenting, the lack of instruction had me quit the game until I had heard back. Other levels follow similar paths of linearity, and you are often just inhabiting the space of a dream as events pass by more than having any direct influence over the events on-screen, which may turn many people off of what it is presenting.
While Nightmare Simulator's graphics are simplistic the arrangement of its visuals strike a surreal, unsettling tone in many of the scenes. The game's sparse use of items combined with vast open areas of emptiness reflect its subject of dreams and the 'iconic' status that certain elements of dreams can embody well.

Nightmare Simulator will probably be a divisive game as far as whether or not you enjoy what it portrays. For me, I found it depicted cerebral, unsettling moments well and had a plethora of surreal scenes to observe. Although the game can range in its effectiveness from comical (the sudden wailing of your character after you light yourself on fire in the log level) to creepy (the slowly-creeping bugs of the other..) for its scant asking price, Nightmare Simulator is an immersive depiction of a handful of bizarre, surreal moments. Some more player interactivity would have broken up its pace a bit more, but I hope the developer continues to create content focusing on psychological / surreal effects.
