“Bury me, my love” is a Syrian goodbye phrase that roughly means, “Take care, don’t even think about dying before I do.” This phrase takes on a deeper meaning as Majd says it to his wife, Nour, as she undertakes her perilous journey to reach Europe.
A co-production from ARTE, the European cultural network, with The Pixel Hunt and Figs.
A game in an instant messaging app
As Majd, you can communicate with Nour and follow her journey, just as if you were chatting with her via WhatsApp. You will text each other and exchange emojis, pics and selfies, relevant links…
Multiple narrative routes to discover
By reading instant messages and choosing response options, players help Nour overcome the hardships she will encounter.
Your choices in Bury me, my Love truly impact on the story, with Nour able to visit 50 different locations and reach 19 potential different endings with widely divergent outcomes.
Based on real-life events
Bury me, my Love is a “reality-inspired game”, a documented fiction that draws inspiration directly from real-world events. The original idea stems from an article written by Le Monde journalist, Lucie Soullier, telling the story of Dana, a young Syrian woman who fled her country and is now living in Germany.
This experience may affect the sensitivity of younger people.

Got this game along with a bundle so I won't complain much. I think appreciate the game for being bold and rely only on text messages to tell its story with apparently many alternative endings (although I only played through one). On the downside though, this game really feels too long after a while and the basically non-existent gameplay doesn't help either.
CONCLUSION: I like what it tries to do, but it really isn't engaging enough to support me through the whole game.
★½ out of 5
A cool premise of a woman trying to escape from local turmoil in an Arab country to some European haven, told entirely through messages on her phone. Both the story and the execution are engaging, your choices do matter (I ended up in Stockholm and I'm sure there are many more endings), the art is nice, and the game doesn't overstay its welcome, 1-2 hours and you're done. What I liked most is the main character -- she comes off as a real live woman, fun and witty but not too much, often exhausted and sometimes irritated, and believable throughout. Recommended.
Summary:
Highly recommended, to anyone who loves an interactive story and has a social conscience.
(Needless to say, this review contains political "bias".)
Main Plus Points:
+ Just wonderful story-telling in this game. From the first instant you start playing the interaction between Majd & Nour draws you in, and you feel connected to the characters and want them to succeed.
+ Text chain interaction dynamic works particularly well here to bring the characters' relationship to life *
+ Many great decision-making moments and story-trajectories -- decisions feel "real" and make you think complex thoughts about their potential ramifications. **
Social/political aspects:
+ A really great way to get inside the refugee experience; presents a truly thoughtful, humanizing picture of the refugee's journey and the numerous types of difficult choices faced along the way. For those of us in the affluent west, helps with putting lives of migrants/refugees into context and builds empathy.
+ Really uses the medium to its advantage in this regard -- like watching a great documentary, but with the added bonus that you are directly involved in the decisions that affect the characters' progress.
Minor gripes:
- Shame not to be able to save your progress (particularly if you're a completionist trying to get all the awards - you would have to play through from the start MANY times to achieve this ***).
I get that this may have been a deliberate design choice, e.g. in terms of making the stories immersive and forcing you to make 'real-time' choices, but I don't think a save feature would've detracted from that too much. And (**) maybe slightly detracts from the immersiveness of the storytelling if you end up having to play through the initial story sections many times and getting 'bored' of them.
- (*) Shame not to be able to navigate the text history more easily. Obvs fine that the communication is experienced as dynamic and ephemeral; but the text history is clearly all still there and it is possible to see it all, it just involves a LOT of scrolling!! (So, might've been a nice interface addition to allow direct navigation to e.g. day sub-sections.)
Definitely not significant detriment to my enjoyment of this game though - and the compelling storytelling and charm of the primary characters' relationship definitely still makes this an A+ visual novel game.
(*** N.B. Should also note that there is a workaround for the absent save-feature - see e.g. here.)
I am not Syrian. I have never been in the shoes of people who have gone through anything remotely similar to the events in this story. I cannot speak on how accurately it portrays events, however, I do know that it packages it in a much prettier box than reality.
That being said; This is a nice little game that does give the ability to open conversations on difficult to approach subjects.
