I think the sign of a well written game is when I feel bad actually BEING a villain and being mean, because I like the characters too much.
Book 1 is on the briefer side, but it's very good at establishing the world and characters, and very engaging. I recommend it.
This game is so good, by far being the best series made for hosted games. The depth of the characters, the customization options, the way it handles gender identity and depression, all while being set into a cool alt history super hero cyberpunk setting make it one of my favourite works of fiction out there.
The story is told in first person and the players past is pretty established. The player decides how the protagonist reacts to develops and what motivates a former telepathic super hero to become a villain 🦹♀️ you can choose the gender of the romantic interests or do it randomly. I did mine randomly and now I can’t imagine the charicters any other way. The way even the smallest actions effects the outcome of the story is staggering. Even if you are burned out by super hero stories I still highly recommend it.
A simple fun immersive story that allows some choice.

Herald, Shen and Dr. Mortum are the best romances in my opinion. Enemies to Lovers is the most exhilarating, especially when playing a manipulative Villain. I ended up giving Argent a chance, and it was worth it. But Herald wins out the majority.

Pretty solid for a standard COG. It's a decent warm up but don't expect the hero rise trilogy. Def wait for a sale.
This is a good read. The first page scared me with its cringe-worthy mixed metaphors; but the writing quickly proved to be quite good after that teeth-grinder of an open. In my opinion.
Anyway, I'm a fast reader and I didn't spend a lot of time mulling over the choices in the story. But that doesn't mean they are weightless or meaningless. Instead, I apparently had a vision of the character I had chosen to play that meshed pretty well with what the author had allowed for. This is high praise from me. This title and its successor are among the best reads in this format that I've come across.
I'm looking forward to the continuation of the series. While I wait, I'm going to take at least one more play through of both of these games as a completely different character.

Fantastic experience. It is like playing as Kira from Death Note but in the My Hero Academia’s world. Pure 4d chess. It really feels like you are in absolute control of the narrative and that every choice matters to the smallest detail.
Shame I can’t also recommend the sequel.

The week I began playing Fallen Hero I was obsessed to the point that I tracked down the creator, Malin Ryden, on Patreon because I wanted to pay more money to ensure she understands that her work is both extremely appreciated and of extremely high quality.
I cannot wait for the rest of the series to release and I hope Ryden never stops making these novels/games because they are incredible.
So, what makes Fallen Hero so different from other choose your own adventure novels/games?
The choices you make in Fallen Hero, nearly all of them, have genuine gameplay impacts, whether or not you notice them. Some of your choices will have an immediate impact while others slowly build up. Some fly under the radar until you play the next installment in the series.
Your character feels both like their own individual with a past and inner life while also being extremely unique and personal to you based on the choices you've made.
The narrative too finds a way to balance being extremely engaging and satisfying while also allowing you to heavily influence it via your choices and character options.
Fallen Hero truly feels like a novel come to life , one where you are the main character, because that is exactly what it is. No path feels right or wrong, cannon or inconsequential, as long as it is the path you want to take, because Ryden treats all of them like they are the main narrative and every possible iteration of the story and characters has something interesting to explore, meaning this game has a massive amount of replayability.
That being said, each installment of the series builds on the previous installments, meaning as the series goes on the exponentially expanding web of choices grows ever larger and more complex. Ryden does not back down and flatten the characters or narrative so that everything is reset to a factory default that can be built off of for the next part of the series. Your characters complexity only grows, as does the complexity of the narrative.
I'm sure once the third novel/game comes out I'll end up replaying the first and second ones all over again (and again and again) to see what choices I made all the way back in the beginning end up coming back to reward or haunt me.
That being said, I never feel punished by the narrative. I may make a bad choice, but that bad choice may lead to new and interesting options, ones I haven't seen or considered before, ones I may not have otherwise gotten. Sometimes the bad choice is the right choice for me because of who I want my character to be or what direction I want the narrative to go in.
This really is a game that rewards you for exploring.
That all being said, I highly recommend you play each of these games "blind" the first time. No spoilers, no guides, no saves. Just choose what feels right to you.
After you've done one blind playthrough of the first game, I recommend replaying and exploring it to find what choices lead you to a character and narrative you feel satisfied with before moving on to playing the next game "blind".
If you want to explore all possible options or are struggling to decide what you want for your character/narrative , especially because there is no "undo" or "save/load" button, then I recommend using a CoG Save Manager and the Do U Wanna Build A Sidestep guide.

Engaging story. Really enjoyed playing so many sides of one character.
A pretty good supervillian/hero adventure. Some of the choices feel a little stiff, but there's enough flexibility throughout (and in the sequel) that you can change who you want to be if you feel like it.
Los Angeles has fallen due to numerous natural disasters and in its ashes rose the rebuilt city of Los Diablos, a lawless city untouched by the government and run by those with power – literally. Heroes and Villains are in a constant battle for control and in the aftermath of the Heartbreak Incident, the telepathic hero Sidestep is presumed dead. Armed with the knowledge you shouldn’t have and secrets that were buried long ago, remake yourself into the greatest villain the city has ever seen.

6-13 hours to complete, Fallen Hero: Rebirth is a text-based RPG with a rare villain protagonist. LGBTQ+ friendly with optional romance, it’s a pretty amazing fallen superhero novel where every choice you make feels like you’ve made the correct one where you choose the tone and level of violence. 385,000+ words and the first book of three, the next in the series being Fallen Hero: Retribution then Fallen Hero: Revelations. Reaching the end of the novel saves that game and brings it into the second novel, and so forth. Overall, it’s a fantastic novel to invest your time into; the only thing I can complain about is the lack of a save/load system and the fact that you can’t backtrack to see the results of other choices unless you start a new game.
