Nova Wing is a Shoot 'Em Up game that is fast paced and straight to the point. You only have one type of ship, one gun (that you level up by looting enemy drops) and 7 levels to complete.
What this game gets right it that it's a fun experience and the music is not bad at all. There's a few tracks and they're all enjoyable. The levels have some variety to them, asteroids, paths to follow, obstacles to avoid, etc. The controls however, are somewhat wonky because the ship has momentum as if you were on ice. That makes it really hard to dodge the projectiles, but the game is still playable. Just keep in mind it takes around 20 minutes to complete (maybe more if you're newer to the genre).
Overall, for a $1 game, it's a cool little Shoot 'Em Up game.
Nova Wing is yet another of literally hundreds of lazy amateur 2D retro top-down shooters infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This arcade shmup eschews the usual crap pixel "art" for some static sprites that, frankly, aren't all that much better.
It's a sci-fi themed vertical scrolling "twin stick" style shooter with enemy waves similar to arcade shoot 'em ups like Galaga. Weirdly the enemies have huge TTK, your ship weapons are like peashooters, and the control handling bites, so this is a huge pile of non-fun if you actually try to play it. Although almost nobody has... see below for the embarrassingly low player counts.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
The controls and game handling are notably very floaty and imprecise. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing or polish done.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game library/engine, SDL2 (SimpleDirect Media Library). It's rarely used, because it's arguably worse than construction kits like GameMaker Studio, RPGMaker and Clickteam Fusion, but it's also much harder to work with. Despite this, SDL2 (SimpleDirect Media Library) has very limited capabilities, which go some way to explaining the poor quality of the game. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Nova Wing is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
Very simple but very fun! Blast enemies in this side-scrolling shooter adventure! Collect "green stuff" to restore HP and level up your gun to become the ultimate gunship of destruction!
Reminded me a bit of the old game The Dreadnaught Factor. There should have been more levels. Other than adjusting to the ship controls it isn't too hard. Easy achievements. Worth it for this price.
Classic old school
Close to being an OK game, but one major flaw I can't get around -- your ship is either programmed to have momentum, or the controls are so sloppy it does anyway. This sabotages the game as you don't have fine control over your ship, it controls more like it's on ice and you've had six beers. No ships in almost every shooter from way back in the early '80s to present day have momentum, and there's a good reason for this. 5/10
it's a fun interesting game
a game that requires you to learn and practise to get 100% achievements. fuck yeah
Not bad for what feels like someone's college project. The creator has potential. I just wish this game was longer.
Short, Cheap and functional.
Decent but short shoot'em up / twin-stick shooter
Aliens have invaded again (or maybe just dared to exist), so an assault vessel with unlimited weaponry is sent to shoot them down.
That's the inferred story of Nova Wing and countless other space shoot 'em ups.
Basically solid
Your main (and only) gun is a sort of raygun whose spread you can adjust by pressing a button. Gun becomes stronger as you gain score.
Enemies take relatively lot of punishment before getting destroyed. There are cannons, ships, mines and even asteroids sent to stop you, and most levels also host a boss. The bosses could be tough but their beam weapons only shoot straight forward, while you can shoot in any direction. Simply staying out of way and dodging the few particles will win the fight, which is slightly lame.
Player ship is fairly tough, only getting destroyed after many hits or if you happen to crash into enemy ship or a wall (the latter only in some levels). You can heal the shields by grabbing the green score dust that's sometimes released by destroyed enemies.
Game is essentially bug-free but oddly it forces Big Picture mode in the Steam Overlay inside the game. Likely related, achievement pop-ups are not seen though all of them work fine.
Controls: Keyboard+mouse or a controller
Like traditional twin-stick shooters, mouse or the other stick of the controller is used to aim, while WASD/left stick moves the ship. I generally dislike the twin-stick scheme so I used k+m instead.
You can have two players in local co-op (requires at least one controller) or over LAN, but I didn't test this.
Conclusions: short but fine
One playthrough of the seven levels takes about 20 minutes. This grants all achievements except the one for score of 1 million (in my opinion it's not terribly difficult).
I played it twice, once for achievements and second time to get a global highscore (because for once I could). High scores and short playthrough apply some much-needed replayability to the title.
It's a solid little shooter and worth its low asking price, especially on sale.
