A really fun rogue-like shooter with a lot of replay-value due to the many different weapon attachments and power-ups!
This game is a very mixed bag.
I only recommend it on sale like I got it.
The idea of the game is really cool! Finding new and wacky attachments as you blaze through levels with your ever changing gun.
Almost no one will end up with the same gun you'll end up with.
But these attachments drop very infrequently. I know you'll be picking these up more and more as you go through each level, but it just starts so slow. And you have to start slow after everytime you die (which will happen a LOT).
Even when you unlock attachments at the shop, it's not like you immediately get them. They just will now have a chance to drop.
And speaking of drops, they happen way too infrequently as well. You could beat a whole room, and may likely not get anything for it.
Bits for buying items during simulations, most common but still often don't drop.
Attachments, don't hold your breathe for one.
Hypercoins, the most used currency in this game, don't bet on them.
I wouldn't even mind hypercoins not dropping that much if it wasn't for this. By the end of beating the first level, and dying in level 2, I had 7 hypercoins. Lowest price for a single item in the shop costs 5.
And unlocking a new ability, 15.
Unlocking a new class....50!
Multiply abilities and classes with how much each costs, not including items in the shop, and you'll be spending 870 hypercoins!
You'd be going through roughly 124 level attempts!
That is WAY too unbalanced of progression, even for a trial-and-error, roguelike shooter!
Doesn't help that the levels, while decently designed, are too generic visually, despite the different themes each level is titled with.
But lets take a break and talk about why I recommend this game on sale.
Simply put, it's really good in a lot of areas.
The gun designs are awesome, the art direction for most things are superb (with the exception of the generic simulation levels), and there's a lot of depth in progression, even if it's slow.
Each class represents an employee, with its own fitting abilities and stats. You can unlock a LOT, and the game likes to update you every time you make any progress.
Showcasing the weapons you made, the kills you got, the attachments you found, the aliens you fought, all within the awesome office spaces!
In the office spaces, you can find plenty of notes, emails, etc, that gives you a great idea just what kind of ridiculous world you happen to be in, and is flooded with personality.
In fact, everything has some nice personality to it. The weapon attachments, the abilities, the lore, it all adds some nice charm that makes me happy to get back into the game.
I do hope this game gets some balancing updates with the loot drops, and maybe give us the option of immediately attach what we purchase at the shop.
Until then, this may be the best version of the game we'll get, and that's a little heart breaking.
Much like P.A.M.E.L.A., this game is MELTING with potential, great visual design, high ambition, and messy design.
Wishing the team the best of luck.
Game got mega hard with the last update. I did my best to play through the game a bit, but got flustered after a bit. It's an awesome idea, but just needs flushed out a bit. Neon Abyss is a simpler but more fun version for gun augments :)

pros
-good game
cons
-my (former) potato pc cant (couldnt) run it at more than 16 frames/year
Yes I would recommend this game. I held off buying it months ago because there were a lot of negative reviews. As a GIANT fan of Ziggurat, a big fan of Mothergunship, let me say that I'm impressed with Hypergun. Immediately it beats Immortal Redneck and City of Brass, by a long shot. This is one of the best looking games I've ever played. I'm only a few hours in and am blown away by the world ambience and graphics. Unless I was in total mesmerization of every facet of gameplay, normally I wouldn't leave a review this fast, however in this case, the sheer abundance of negative reviews out there, I want to leave a positive review right now, just incase there's anyone like myself, who is thinking about buying the game but holding off because of the negative reviews. Trust your instincts like I should have trusted mine. Imagine Mothergunship type enemies, mixed with Neon Chrome style soundtrack, with awesome graphics. Sure there could be more enemies, though I've just started playing and haven't unlocked them all yet. Plus by the 3rd stage, there are enough of the default running enemies combined with flying shield generators on them, that actually mastering not taking damage and doing well, yeah that'll take some time. However as a giant fan of these kind of games, I'm that impressed that I'm seriously considering gifting it to a few people already. If you want AAA rinse and repeat garbage and need a full blown story from a game, look elsewhere, chum. As this game will be for those gamers with true gaming integrity; you against the machine.
Game has a lot of potential but was dropped by the developer soon after release. Hasn't seen an update from the dev since late 2018. Fun game but could have been made great through iteration. Can't recommend at full price.
Holy shit do mobs and bosses take a lot of shots. Made worse by really dull gun play. Maybe it gets better after unlocks; I don't have the time to find out.
Can't recommend this even if it's a decent game. The developers assured people that this game wouldn't have slowed down the development of PAMELA, and I can see why, because they don't bother updating it.
As much as I would love to recommend this game, the developers dipped out and decided not to update this game which other wise has amazing potential. If the developers came back and gave consitent updates I would give this a glowing review, as for now this game is dead and not worth a postive review.
I personally find the game a fun waste of time. If you are lookin to kill time between some classes or somthing play a run or two, heavily rng based so a run can get a good run where u kill the final boss with ease or have trouble with the first boss
This game is actually underrated, honestly
Game is fine, feels like TBOI but with a different apporach
This game offer you same mechanics, like:
- Pick ups
- Usables
- Attachments
- Shops
- Treasure rooms
[*]Characters with their own abilities
Before buying on release, I have red a few reviews and could not really believe them, because most of them were saying, that the game was bad. The issues people were mentioning that the game was, somewhere short, level design is kinda not good, enemies are the same, and that there are chests that need a key, which you dont always have, etc.
They have reviewed it like there will no longer be any updates, even tho it just came out, come on ffs
I'll try to defend this game, which is not usually welcome, but I dont give a shit anyway, so:
I will compare this game to TBOI, because they are similiar somewhat
1) TBOI also have keys and shit, that dont always drop, especially when you need them, same goes to health, shields, and coins (bits for this game, at least)
2) Level design is O.K, not good but not bad either, you can move around, jump around - thats all you need
3) If you've played TBOI - you sure as hell know that enemies there are also repetitive and annoying at times that they appear again and again and again, theres nothing wrong with that, even tho, I am pretty sure that they will add more enemies in the future, so in the next updates you can complain about that you hate new enemies, so it will go on and on.
4) The game lenght - the game showed me how much time I spent completing each level, and, well it had the same lenght I used to spend when I was going full Isaac run to the chest or dark room. So, cant really say the game is short at all.
5) At last, graphics - they are nice looking, and does not cause any lag, I played with 90+ fps constantly, thats all I need, personally. Some people were mentioning that the game was lagging. I could not find anything like that and I was playing on High+ custom settings and my computer is older than some peoples brains, who were telling that it was not optimized well.
I can actually nitpick evey review but thats the things I got quite angry at, when people mentioned them, because they are freaking snowflakes, who need instant 99 keys, 99 bits and cant aim for shit.
Here comes my problems with the game, so dont worry, angry doggies, I do have them too
1) Bullets do not come thru the surfaces - projectiles do, and thats the most annoying shit I have encountered in this game, I do hope its some sort of a bug or unseen thing that will be fixed
2) Each time you get hit the screen gets so blurred, you cant see at all, and thats quite disorienting. Example: you step on a lava while shooting at boss or whatever, your screen shows you that you are hit but you dont understand what hit you, and, while standing in lava, the screen gets more and more distorted, it gets messy, a lot
3) Needs more bosses, they are ok and stuff, but it would be nice if you could have a boss rotation, so there is always something new each time you enter the boss room, dont know if its planned to be 1 same boss for floor or not.
4) Jumping feels more like swimming in air, rather than flying, maybe its just me. I just want more strict collision with ground and walls.
I recommend this game, dont listen to the other pussies, thanks for attention
While this game has huge potenial, I honestly thought it was an early acess game when i bought it. The idea is great and adding componets on to your gun is fun. But alot of the upgrades are mediocre. The enemies are not varied enough, and the bosses are somewhat boring after youve faced them a few times. Not to mention there are some glitches, for example, if you play as sue sharp and use your class ability, its like a short teleport, facing a wall, you clip right throuh the wall and fall into nothing until you quit the game or return to base. Overall this game needs alot of work done, its fun but could be alot better. It gets boring pretty fast. Hopefully the devs fix these issues because this game could be really great.
For now Id rate it a 5/10.
This game has a really cool concept, but misses out on the most important part of a game: fun. Despite my negative recommendation, the game is not bad, and my overall opinion is a bit more "mixed".
Negatives:
1. It's very repetitive. By the time you're halfway through the game, you've seen almost every enemy type.
2. There's some jankiness, particularly with environmental hazards like fire, where sometimes it's not obvious whether or not you'll take damage. In a game that's all about limited resources and permadeath, this isn't cool.
3. You can't seem to save and quit out of a run, and with how repetitive things are, ~2 hours straight becomes a bit of a slog.
4. As expected of a roguelike, randomness is a huge factor. Annoyingly, certain random elements (e.g. when you find a map of each level) seem a bit disproportionally impactful.
Positives:
1. Solid mechanics. Aiming and moving feels pretty good, and the random levels work well with the enemy abilities.
2. Boss fights are pretty cool, with neat environmental aspects that test your ability to handle 3D awareness. Later bosses do become a bit predictable, but they're still fun.
Overall, the game isn't that difficult for a roguelike (I've beaten it once already, with less than 5 hours played in total). While it's certainly fun, and only $15, the negatives outweight the positives in my opinion. By the time I got to the later levels, I just wanted the game to be over with; that's not the feeling of a great game.
If you're looking for a few hours of fun, this game is not a bad choice. If you're looking for tens or hundreds of hours of roguelike replayability, perhaps look elsewhere.
I really wanted to love this game. But there is very little reason to return. The difference between many of the attachments is almost nothing. Theres so many that do almost nothing but add a tiny non noticable difference to the the gun, and it beccomes way too easy to just get a powerhouse gun. Since the enemies never change (just adding a new one each floor) you end up destroying everything by the 5th floor. Worst part is that the Hypergun gets overwritten by upgrades. the gun I used throughout the entire game on my last playthrough suddenly completely changed appearance 2 rooms from the final boss after picking up just one attachment. So getting to SEE my finished gun doesn't mean much. This has happened multiple times in seperate runs. This is a problem when you can end a run with 40+ attachments. I would personally cut back on a lot of the attachments, make them more varied and worth picking up, and also let the player see what they are picking up instead of just a box dropped from an enemy
I understand that some of the attachments do change up the gun, like the banana, but when you get so many thrown on you it does very little difference to how you approach a run. I still comes down to popcorn shooting.
A very graphically pretty game, awesome music, interesting to experience..
Unfortunately, the game does a bad job of pacing and balance, making every room feel like a chore to clear. It starts to feel repetitive and dull surprisingly quickly.. I wish I had liked this, but I didn't.
If you're gonna copy Enter the Gungeon and Strafe then make sure not to add arbitrary limits that only frustrate and force the player to grind uncomfortably. Half of these mods aren't worth getting for fear it'll mess up fake firearm. It's sad cause I *really* want to keep playing this game but every time I do I just get frustrated like i do in pay2win games but there's not even a scheme here.
If you're gonna make a roguelite, please don't sacrifice fun for "balance" in a solo shoot'em up seemingly based on getting an incredibly lucky dice roll (YAHTZEE!) in order to beat the game as brokenly fast as possible.
TLDR: Extremely repetitive even by genre standards, gameplay feels bad in every way.
The game feels like an inferior Paranautical Activity, whether you like that game or not. The first level (I haven’t made it past the first boss yet) has five types of enemy and each room uses between three and five of them. Plus they’re a who’s who of annoying enemy designs:
– The regular dudes that run at you to stab you
– Small spiders that run at you to stab you (or explode, can’t tell)
– Snipers that hide behind shields
– Annoying flying things
– Bull charger types with giant shields on the front
Everything takes too long to kill. The collision detection is questionable at best, especially on the chargers where you can be shooting them in the exposed back and nothing happens. Gun upgrades are like +10% one stat, -5% another but you can’t really tell what you’re about to pick up so your stats just jump around randomly and often make your gun even worse than it starts. Each room takes a while to clear. And of course every fourth or so ragdoll goes completely crazy.
The first boss has 2000 HP (and there’s only one boss for the first level, no selection it picks between) while your gun will do less than 50 DPS at that point. The boss also has moving armor plates that you have to destroy before you can damage it and various indestructible obstacles floating around it making it even less likely that you get to bring the full 50 DPS to bear on it.
Oh also there's noticeable input lag making everything feel floaty.
Buyer Beware.
I managed a to get to the final boss in run 2 and a complete run on 3... on my 3rd run! 5 hours of gametime and I finished the final boss. I'm average at these Roguelites. So take that for what you will. And because of that I've strong, mixed feels about the game.
On one hand, these roguelites get *too* grindy at times, requiring atleast 20 runs (~40 hours) before you see the final floor. End up feeling as though your just grinding againts an artificial difficulty that serves *only* to pad out time.
On the other, I'd expect to have to do more than a couple runs in order to actually fulfill the purpose of a roguelite. To feel like I'm growing a character over time. Rather than just walking in day 1 and knocking down a bunch of push-over.
Some other problems are:
-Level 3 - The Jungle is abit of a mess, visually and navigation-wise. Too much brush and trees, the brush hiddens enemies and their projectiles. The trees do the same but are also obstacles blocking your circle strafing and getting you pinned in corners. Getting pinned in corners is a minor problem with some of the later tile-sets, but its Level 3 were they're the biggest issue.
-Lots of lootboxes and stores, but no keys or money. I'd maybe opened only 1/4 of the lootboxes since the keys barely drop, plus barely stocked in the store. Only brought 1 item at every other store because money barely drops.
-Too many items cancel other items out. In the last run I had 36 mods on the weapon and 8 of them cancelled each other out. 4 items that did '+5% dam -5%RoF' and 4 items of '+5%RoF -5% dam'. If I see that once or twice in a run fine, I can tolerate that, but 4 times in 2 of 3 of my runs?!
-The upgrades acquired during a run are tiny. See previous point as one example.
-Final Boss is a DPS rush. The Hivemind has three stages, the last two have segments of the entire floor periodically turning to fire, do clip damage and the boss has Area of Denial attacks, you're going to get hit one way or another. *Which is the only reason I died in my 2rd run.*
-No Meta character/weapon upgrading. The only things you buy with the meta-currency are 3 different classes, or items unlockes for a chance to have them drop in a run. (since I've only played 5 hours, maybe there are some actual perma-upgrades in the meta-shop, if so consider this point moot)
-My first run's weapon (died on second boss) only had a few mods, yet has better Damage/DPS than my 2 other weapons that got me to floor 6!... You're weapon gets worse the longer the run goes! The gun that ended on floor 2 is my number 1 weapon, over a weapon that was completed !!
There are some more issues and a few bugbears I still have. However if the Devs address (with new updates/patches) these main issues above *AND* expand on the game, with a few more tiles per level, more goodies both in-run and meta-upgrading, scaling up player and enemy power as the run progresses. And I'll change this review to a positive.
I had fun HYPERGUN, it just needs more.
Music is great, the audio in gerenal is good, aside from the weapon firing sounds which is a mixed bag of OK and bland. I think the enemies are for the most part fine, there's enough types of enemies - can't think of a role that isn't already being filled (The sniper with the riot-enegry-shield is annoying to deal with. Root the shield so players can circle around or reduce it's health). With the exception of the final boss, the bosses are OK, nothing to write home about. Good player movement, with a good move speed that can be increased and a double jump. With the exception of the Jungle the tiles are nicely varied.
Hope too see improvements in the future. If not, I think this game is a hard pass.
A heckin' good time! Guns and mods are amazing, plentiful, and range from cool to goofy. Runs well, only ran into 1 minor bug on release day and it was unaffecting of gameplay and devs are already fixing it. Movement is smooth and fast, shooting is great. Can't say enough good things. 10/10 in my book a steal at $15.
Graphics are good, and the game has some good humor as well. I love the fact that you start off with a base weapon and you can find attachments which change it both physically and statistically.
However for now, I'm going to say this is a pass. The enemies get very repetitive and quite frankly, the gameplay isn't very fun. The idea is there, but I'm not so sure the execution is. The environments are boring, and everything just kind of meshes together. The enemies, the items, the destroyable props, bullets - all of it looks the same. To be honest, I wasn't really trying to dodge anything so much as I was basically just making sure I didn't stop moving - that was enough to keep me alive with more than enough hp. It didn't help that I couldn't even tell what there was to dodge in the first place aside from enemies that charged at you.
The office space was really interesting and it was fun reading the devices around the map, but I wish the amount of detailed effort that was put into the lobby was also put into the fighting arena's. They're very mundane, and almost seem totally randomly generated but not in a good way - or just pumped out quickly without much thought. Ramps that lead to walls, platforms that just end to a fall, random static objects all over the place that just obstruct view. This becomes even more of an issue towards the 3rd level where bushes and trees are all over the place.
The boss fights seem well intentioned, but could use work. For example, the sphere boss was extremely boring and consisted of me running in a circle for 5 minutes just holding down my trigger. Also it's not very obvious that it had a physical shield you had to break - for the first minute I was just frustrated that damage numbers were being displayed but no damage was being done. It was only after a piece finally broke that I realized what was going on. I still didn't get hit once during the fight though.
The 2nd boss was much more interesting. The arena was a bunch of hexagonal surfaces with some hexagonal blocks along the ceiling. Every now and then the boss would cause some to drop from the ceiling and you had to dodge them, but you could also destroy them. I wish the game had more of this kind of design, because immediately I thought "maybe I can shoot them down myself?" and I tried it. I could, and if you caused one to fall on the bosses head it would stun him.
Here's the games major downfall though - the bugs. Riddled with bugs. When I entered the boss room on the second level, my weapon model disappeared completely. It never came back and even persisted through any loading screens. During the second boss fight, the boss got frozen in a mid-animation frame in mid-air and stayed like that for the rest of the fight. He still attacked and moved, but there was zero animation to him and made it difficult to see what was happening. Also sometimes enemies will run the complete wrong way. This isn't a bug, but some enemies have massive i-frames where you can't kill them. For example, the wizard mob will begin a teleport animation and sometimes he just kinda of hangs out before dropping into the ground which leads to a full 7-8 seconds of you being unable to damage him.
I really like the direction, and some of the gun attachments were great - one turned my gun into an espresso machine which I actually loved. Sadly, the game is very boring, and very repetitive. It's less than 2GB so really there's isnt very much content. I'm going to give it a few patches and see how it goes, then I'll be sure to write an updated review.
