Roboquest

Roboquest is a real pickle of a game to review, because nothing in its presentation particularly stands out. In fact, it was the comic booky, cel shaded looks of it, complete with onomatopeias and comic book looking cutscenes, which kinda drove me away from it when I first saw it come out in Early Access: it did look like a game that put form over substance to cash in on an otherwise bland and stiff pew pew roguelite.

If you listed all its bullet points, Roboquest is just an aggressively mid game in every sense of the word: It's got RNG-y weapons, it's got a few classes that play essentially the same just with a couple different actions, it's got mostly static maps with branching paths, you get perks every once in a while, there's some collectibles, whoop de doo. So why should you pick this over Immortal Redneck, or Nightmare Reaper, or Witchfire, Gunfire Reborn, RoR2 or even something like a Borderlands?

Before I get to the main reason, it's important to mention that, while Roboquest doesn't have many standout gimmicks, what it does have is an exquisite craftmanship. It is a delicately spiced melange of otherwise mundane mechanics, tuned in such a way that they deliver a fun, solid experience run after run regardless of what class you picked, how you leveled your guy through the game, what weapons you grabbed and which path you picked. Every class feels unique, and every improvement is palpable, and there are a ton of ways you can play through the game, and yet everything feels viable while retaining the identity of the class and the choices you made as a player. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the music, which is absolutely incredible and perfectly accompanies the action as you progress through the game.

Either as a happy accident or whatever baguette witchcraft the developers practiced, it cannot be understated how well everything comes together and how pleasant the game is to play. From sniper rifles to shotguns to deployable turrets to room-clearing gatling cannons, the player will be able to pick up whatever class they choose, with the corresponding unique abilities and melee attack, and advance through the levels however they see fit. You can stand on top of a level and snipe everything, or you can even just skip entire levels, if you don't mind missing on the level-ups. Or, you can charge headfirst into a room and let the hallmark feature of Roboquest take center stage: the schmovement. Oh my god the schmovement.

It is hard to describe how incredibly good movement feels in this game. There's nothing fancy, you can run, jump, crouch-slide and grind on the rare rail, but it's how it comes together. Again, it's hard to do it justice in text form, but it's just so, so good. Chaining actions is so effortless, and it's so easy to keep the action going while shooting and swapping guns and using your abilities, and just running into Mario jumping off a robot into another jump into a stomp into a slide, and the genius of Roboquest is that it makes it easy. I don't know how, 'cause the game doesn't feel as if it's helping you, but it somehow makes it so easy and accessible and yet incredibly rewarding at the same time.

It doesn't matter if you're playing as a juggernaut spitting missiles and shotgun blasts, or a scout teleporting around and backstabbing enemies, no matter how you play it, the game is going to make you feel better than you really are, and it feels incredible. Let me tell you, I'm an absolute scrub when it comes to FPS games, and Roboquest has awakened feelings in me that shouldn't be attainable without chemical assistance.

So what's bad about Roboquest? Well, progression will always be funneled down into big room fights where movement speed and being able to nuke a lotta robots a lotta fast is the only thing that matters. This means that a lot of builds and weapons are suboptimal at best and a death sentence at worst, so invariably whether a game is successful or not will boil down to being able to find something that shoots very fast for a lot of damage most of the time. Certain upgrades are massively more useful than others as well, and finally, the (mostly) static levels will eventually end up feeling repetitive. But like I said, these are the rare blemishes in an otherwise incredibly well balanced game that at the end of the day will give you an incredible amount of bang for your buck.

Roboquest is an example of polish over gimmicks, and how focusing on the fundamentals of gameplay pays off. An incredible example of a game laser focused on providing an exquisite moment to moment gameplay that will never fail to feel amazing.

It's fun, it's hard, it's doesn't want to get you addicted, it doesn't want to ignite FOMO and it's not shoddy UE5. Good game.

first of all it's a fun game. Wont take long to run through, but there is enough here to give you a reason to make multiple runs. It's no like Hades where you have to run multiple times to get all the endings. Instead you will just want to try it with all the robots, and see what guns you get. There are also a few secrets to find along the way. All in all it's a great indie game that I would recommend to all my friends.

This game is very good solo, but unbelievably fun with 2 players, and there is a lot of content to be unlocked and weapons to be mastered in this game. A movement shooter with lots of fun to be had.

Very fun game, the fast-paced nature of it on top of the amazing soundtrack go hand-in-hand together to create a fun product that gives plenty of hours of joy.

Roboquest has some of the most fun shooting mechanics I've played in a long time! The weapon variety is absolutely great, there's so many different options. The game is really tough even just on standard difficulty, so I can only imagine what it's like on hard mode. The co-op is why I bought this game and MAN this game even better with 2 players. The music is also some of the best I've heard. I haven't been this into a video game OST since DOOM Eternal. Also, the demo is mind blowingly huge! Me and my friend played it for 2 hours before buying the full game. That shows, at least to me that these devs have a lot of confidence in their product because they know the player will want more! And they are RIGHT! Do yourself a favor and buy Roboquest! Support these awesome developers!

While I think this roguelike crucially lacks variety, the fast & frenetic gameplay, fun puzzles & great weapons kept me coming for more. The unlockable abilities & characters also helped make the movement more fun, in spite of the rather static level design

I'm a huge rogue like fan, so combining the solid FPS groundwork with this genre is a complete match for me

The game is the right feel pace, not fast like feeling on a timer but pushes you to go faster with each round to get the best bonuses

Character wise each feel distinct in their play style, I found I was selecting different weapons relevant to that class ability and it's a natural curve that I enjoyed

Locations are interesting in an almost retro way, each location separates itself from the others with a unique feel from desert plains to an abandoned city.. Maybe the art style is more comic book colourful than I'd prefer but I was invested regardless

Really the bad point for me is once the game is completed with 1 class completing this again with other classes felt less interesting. That's more me than the game most likely but i still feel I got a lot of benefit from the game experience and will be watching for more

An absolute banger!
Extremely well executed mixture of first-person arena shooter (Doom-style) with rogue-lite elements.
Weapons are all fun and pack a punch, randomness of items is spicying up every run, enemies are variable, boss encounters are actually great. All that comes with one of the best OST possible for such a game.

Great game to play solo or with a friend! Will gladly play again when dlc is available.

Fast paced single player shooter with some rogue lite elements and A LOT of weapons, customization, and secrets. The rogue lite elements do add a few cool twists to how you can play. But at the end of the day, your skill is the biggest factor affecting whether you will reach the end or not. Luck will only take you so far in this game.

This game is awesome. It’s like Borderlands 2 mixed with Dead Cells it’s amazing. Addictive fun gameplay, huge weapon variety, fun bosses, awesome classes that add good gameplay diversity, great levels, and great unique art style.

Best roguelite I've ever played

Roboquest is a dynamic FPS rogulite, clearly inspired by Borderlands, a lot of good ideas and mechanics are taken from it. The only FPS roguelite I've played besides Roboquest is Gunfire: Reborn and I can say with confidence that this one is 10 times better.

I absolutely fell in love with this game in the first few hours, this is the ideal combination of fun and challenge which you would ever want from roguelite. It has meta progression, different paths to complete the game, tons of weapons, tons of items, 6 classes, each one with very different playstyle, tons of different enemies.

I cannot say anything bad about this game, I liked every pixel of it, easily became not only my favorite roguelite, but one of my favorite games in general. Runs are quite long when you start playing the game, my first runs took me like 40-50 minutes, but when you get used to mechanics, know which weapons you do like and which not, it will take you 20-30 minutes to complete the game on best rank. You can get different ranks in each stage, starting from E, which is nearly impossible to get and ending with S, rank is determined by your time and XP, so basically to get S rank, you need to kill all enemies on the stage and make it fast enough, again, it is not that hard to get S rank on every stage even on the highest difficulty as soon as you get used to the game.

In general, game is quite challenging, initially 4 difficulties are unlocked, later you will unlock 4 more, where Guardian IV is the highest difficulty. On difficulties under Hard, you can easilly watch a movie on the second monitor and barely pay attention on what is happening on your screen and you will still win with S rank, on Guardian IV on the other you will die a lot when paying your full attention, so there is a lot of options for every skill level, anyone will find something that will fit them.

There are about 80 weapons in the game, as in Borderlands, weapons have levels, quality and prefixes, everything can be upgraded throughout your run, so you can complete the game with the gun that you found in the first room. Weapons differ very much, starting from simple shotguns, rifles, snipers and ending with kunais and nunchucks made out of pans, a lot different playstyles. What I liked a lot is that to get the gun to the museum, you need to kill 230 enemies with it, so for 100% you will need to play almost with every gun, this will change your opinion on a lot of guns. I think that this feature is very nice and would fit any roguelite, because most of the time if I find some guns that I like more than others, than I will play only with them, without looking at others, therefore loosing a lot of content.

Roboquest contains 10 different bosses, you will encounter only 4 during the run, 3 normal bosses, which will be random out of 9 and 1 final boss. All bosses are nice, different attacks, different mechanics, everything is made very well.

During your runs you will level up you character and will be able to choose 1 out of 4 perks, at the end of the complete run, you will have 4 main perks which are mostly different for each class, each main perk have 2 subperks, which will somehow upgrade that perk, all other perks will be general, same for each class, like more damage, critical damage and etc.

There are 6 classes, each one differs vastly in terms of playstyle, one will have drones that you will play around, another is focused on close combat, another will have a lot of explosions, every class can be very strong with right perks, no disbalance at all.

All items in the game are passive items, they can be acquired in different ways, but most of the time you will buy them with powercells, those are in game currency dropped by enemies or found in chests. Besides, powercells, there are wrenches which are used outside of the runs for meta progression, and when you upgrade everything, you will unlock lottery for spending you wrenches during the runs.

Roboquest is not that long for a roguelite, I've completed the game 100% in exactly 50 hours, nothing is left there to do except some speedrunning or self made challenges, I've cleared the museum, got S rank on every difficulty and discovered every perk and sub-perk on every class. Someone would say that this is not enough content for a roguelite, but I will not agree, compared to Gunfire: Reborn, there are 4 stages, and runs do not really differ from one another, here on the other hand, every run will be different, there are different paths to go, different weapons to try, different strats to try. So, despite the fact that this game maybe a bit smaller than Gunfire: Reborn, it has much more replayability, in my opinion.

Artstyle is also seems like Borderlands one, but less comics-like, very neat and beatiful though.

Soundtracks are also fire, absolutely loved them.

The only thing I would point out as not very good, is that there is absolutely no communication in coop mode, no emotes, no chat or anything like that. Not a big problem for me, though. It was a problem only when I was trying to get an achievement for reviwing your teammate, people were just not dying and I had no way to ask them to.

In general, I would recommend this game to everyone, this is the best roguelite I've played, this is a decent price for such a good game.

Roboquest has been one of the most addicting singleplayer FPS's in recent years. As someone who loves games that reward mastery and precision this game has it all with fun mobility gadgets you earn over time, great sense of progression and reward, as well as AMAZING gunplay to top it all off. The soundtrack is awesome, and each death in a run is a driving force that begs you to jump back in and keep going for those S-Ranks. If you're on the fence of buying this game if you're looking for a really good FPS, this is the one

This game combines elements of arena shooters like doom with looter shooter elements of borderlands and borrows a bit of it's asthetic to combine into a very smooth rouge-lite experience.

The killer soundtrack helps you get into a flow state where your experimentation of it's different mechanics and abilities that interconnect really shine.

It's very addictive, be warned :)

Great FPS roguelite to play alone or with friends. Game has a good amount of depth to it and great replay-ability.

Finding the secrets was lots of fun and the game has an odd charm that really amps up the immersion.

i have been playing this game off and on since its very first buyable version, and let me tell you it is worth every penny.

THE ACTUAL REVIEW
You are a robot killing other robots with many different weapons(around 80 rn), most of which are very unique and recognizable. The classes (currently 7) are all different enough from each other for runs to be completely different in the way you approach them. The sheer amount of control you can have over your build in endgame(fully upped workshop) is crazy. The art style is amazing and the music is bangin 100% of the time. Unlocking stuff is definitely a pain, though. I have gripes with a certain tunnel button in particular(no spoilers hehe suffer), and getting all the gadgets is like pulling teeth if you try it without guides. That said, this is one of the only games that makes me lean all the way in and dodge stuff irl constantly. I will certainly be playing this for a while more, and even if I fall off, I will continue to come back for every update until I physically cant move my fingers anymore. 9.5/10 game, and I never say that lightly.

super fun game, I have played it mostly solo so I can't say much on the side of co-op play, but as it stands playing it solo has been a blast

I'm split on this game, in itself the game is fun but it becomes repetitive quite fast especially because the bosses (besides the first ones) are too hard. Hard in unnecessarily frustrating and confusing ways, which means it gets hard to progress in the game. Especially since each run to the second boss takes a solid 30 minutes of doing the same thing on repeat. The gunplay feels great, there are a lot of fun variation of weapons and music is banging. Too bad that the boss-design is a major turn-off, it almost feels like they were designed for a different game. The game-loop is shoot things in the face but the bosses are intricate platforming/dodging puzzles

Any game that is so engaging that it compels you to keep starting that next run is a true masterpiece. I was sad after I completed it for the first time, because I just want MORE. Extremely fluid and smooth gameplay. Top tier movement mechanics. Tons of variety. One of the best FPS games I've ever played.

we occasionally play it for the action n music, quite fun with 10/10 doom-like soundtracks but wouldnt play this for say 200+ hrs

Gunplay feels amazing, characters unique, speed goes brrr, amazing game!

An amalgam of every juicy FPS mechanic ever devised, with great gunplay and sweet coop action. It captures the chaotic energy of a Borderlands game but with tighter balancing, smarter mechanics, and with more satisfying powers and progression (and without the verbiage).

Really solid game. I've gotten a lot enjoyment from it, from early access to new updates.

blam! BOOM! CHachunk! A fun shooter with plenty of weapons. The time based part isn't actually important so I can take my time. Some levels make you run through all the enemies like a race but they are optional. Getting a 'good' time score only gets you a few more energy cells to trade. About 6 or so out of the 80+ you can get in a run.

Was on the fence about buying it but I'm so glad I did! The movement in this game is so slick! Also the guns feel great! 10/10. Possibly my favourite game. If you're not sure if you want this game try the demo. It's great!

Incredibly fun roguelite game, probably one of, if not, the best FPS roguelites I've ever played. Artwork is incredible, the music is absolutely top notch, and the gameplay is super addicting. The different builds you can have, the variety of weapons, the progression of the game are all fantastic and really gets you going. It's a game you can play one run of and then call it a night or play for hours on end without losing interest.

Only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the grind to complete the museum but even then, it becomes easier once you've unlocked some of the things in the game. Overall, just a fantastic game, really recommend to anyone who likes roguelites.

Game didn't click with me. Combat felt tedious and samey. I can see why people might like it, the experience seems fast and smooth. Just not much depth to the combat I guess. Just shoot and don't get hit.

Can't save the game mid run. 35 minutes into a 40 minute run, and I have to go? Too bad, time and effort wasted.

This will become a thumbs up review if a save function appears, until then I'd find something else to play.

Really good roguelike(or was it spelled roguelite? I can never keep up with these terms man), the gunplay and movement is smooth, the enemies mostly provide good visual feedback(with one exception), and the style is immaculate! The only feedback I can really give is that the model for the human companion looks a little dead inside and the enemy that locks you in place looks a little too similar to the enemy that shoots easily dodge-able projectiles. Great game, highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys fast paced FPS games.

This game is a good game. Give it a try. You are a robot. There are a bunch of guns. You kill robots to get strong to kill more robots, Sometimes you kill big robots. Give it a try.

Map design and exploration is where this game sets a bar above most others. I'm tired of procedural generated roguelikes. Hand crafted, quality levels like these are what devs should aim for. A solid 15-20 hour game is much better than a dull 100 hours.
