Preface: I read this in Japanese.
Hello Lady is a story about revenge. But not really. It's a story that takes something so commonly bottle necked as "I must avenege the death of my mother/father/brother/sister/ clan/ dog/ basketball career and really turns it into something special that everyone can relate to. The realization of the theme in the final route is really beautiful and is easily the best part of the game. That being said the rest of the game really isn't bad. The fact that every heroines' route has clearly defined borders and circumstances that distinguishes them apart from each other, is something that most other VNs struggle with. This largely due to the talent of the main writer, Hino Wataru who is fucking hilarious, and at times, utterly ridiculous. Speaking of which the writing works so well with the VN medium because the writer can eschew physical details for the sake of timing and line delivery when he chooses to. That being said, while my Japanese reading comprehension isn't perfect there are times (especially during fight scenes) that I felt just dragged on too long, or descriptions of actions took too long, and it doesn't help that if you miss even one detail, you could get totally lost. Hino's descriptions are actually really original and vivid, one of my favourite excerpts detail the start of a fight. Narita's senses sharpened so finely that he could hear even the stir of a tick on the leaves around him. Though I think the strongest point of his writing is when he uses the characters as a mouthpiece for his opinions and thoughts because it's almost as though Hino writes essays in disguise, and he's very convincing. Whether it be iron hot critical diatribes on the nature of human society, or countless of memorable, hilarious one liners that sometimes also speak to the strange fallacies of societal inequalities, Hino finds a way.
I don't have much to say about the production values, but I wish they had at least one more track for the "final boss" since the fight is long and the songs get a bit repetitive. Designs for the heroines were good.
When it comes out in English y'all better read it.
