This game is so egregiously horny it's insane. I don't care what Komaru and Toko are doing- they can go make out in the corner for all I care, but the amount of weird shit with the kids is hard to overlook

Dialogue is crazy repetitive no matter how much I try to glaze this game. If I hear the word 'normal', 'demon', or 'GAME ROOM' AGAIN I WILL EXPERIENCE SHELL SHOCK.

Late stage arcade games make me want to commit suicide with how broken the mechanics are. Every time I step through those ugly golden doors and see a kirby lookin' ball monokuma I cry a little on the inside.

Combat is also janky. Gun is weird to aim, monokumas are so braindead that they're running in circles when I'm trying to hit their eye. Genocide Jack is rather fun to play though, I like her little lust fever ultimate move whatevers.

Pretty much the only reason I'm currently trudging through is because I want to see Toko and Komaru get their yuri on and to finish this stupid game. Ugh. And they're not even going to kiss.

This genuinely might be one of the worst games I've ever played.
I like danganronpa, I think its cool despite the fact it is goofy as hell.
But this game is just nothing, you will have a 10 minute "cutscene" of characters just standing there talking about nothing, you gain control, walk 10ft and then enter another cutscene where they continue to talk about nothing.

When there is gameplay its a clunky 3d brawler like game with rpg elements, but you only get to play it for like 10 seconds before getting interrupted. (I'm not even exaggerating.)

The only motive to play it is that Toko occasionally says something out of pocket that is kinda funny, and the music is good, but it is not worth sitting through an hour of them talking about virtually nothing, or saying the same thing over and over again.

This game is a joke, I have been scammed.

UDG is a weird game, man.
After replaying it and beating it 100%, I can't tell whether I love, enjoy, think averagely on, or hate this game for what it is. The story is about Komaru Naegi, sister of Makoto Naegi, teaming up with Toko Fukawa to survive an apocalypse of endless Monokuma Units in a Survival Horror/Action setting, all the while they uncover the secrets of Towa City and the antagonists (The Warriors of Hope). It's a really cool and probably most unique concept and setting for the franchise since the first game. The Graphics leave a lot to be desired, since this is a PSVita original ported to PC, everything will expectedly look on par with a PS2 game from the Renderware engine. This game looks the same like those HD collections for the PS3. The Sound Design is great though, the voice acting is nice, the SFX is memorable, and the music is great like always. I love the character designs of Komaru and Toko (and the others obv), and despite some messy parts overly fourth wall breaking moments, Komaru and Toko are an amazing duo.

However, i feel as if after this replay, i don't love the gameplay anywhere near as much. I like a lot of it's elements as well as the fact there is a bunch of fun collectibles and optional content, however, the main combat is a lot to be desired. Ever since I first played the game in 2023, I played many others since that did a much better job at what UDG set out to do (Uncharted, Doom 3, InFamous, etc...) and it makes me wish this game worked like them. Why isn't there a running meter to insentivise us to actually save it for important moments? Why can we break the game with mouse control making aiming at Monokuma eyes much easier? Why can't Toko's charge be something that we fill up for a limited time instead of have available whenever? Also, can't there be more times when we are encouraged to use Toko? She's basically the Dark Jak of this game. Why do some ammo types not get used as often for the combat aside from puzzles? (Link, Paralyze, Move, Detect) and why does Burn suck so much? I wish we had ammo types like a shotgun styled one, or a BFG! Imagine how cool a BFG weapon would work in this game! Anyways, this combat of the game, while quite standardly designed, it leaves a lot to be desired and can feel way too easy if you have the hang of things.. Also, let's not forget the many repetitive moments, the many overly long moments, the questionably horny moments, and everything else that makes this game messy.

Overall, despite it's heavy hitting flaws, Ultra Despair Girls is by far the best Danganronpa sequel we ever had, and I really wish we could have a sequel/spiritual successor to it so we can see what Danganronpa/Spike Chunsoft could do with the formula again. Love this one for the messy game it is.

          This may not be for you;
Gameplay is fun. BUT. story is subpar(in the context of danganronpa, KNOWN for having bad stories) at best and is TOO horny. and this is coming from someone who tolerated Miu Iruma from DRV3! I personally like 3rd person shooters, but I wouldn't recomend it if you like regular danganronpa, and even if you don't.

It's a bit different from V1 and V2 but it is super fun. If you want to follow extra Danganronpa lore, I would definitely recommend it. Just note there are some triggering things that can show up (specifically Kotoko's backstory in chapter three. There are mentions of how she was rxped) but other than that, it is pretty cool

The game is pretty terrible, the only real reason to play this game is to have a more complete idea of the over arching story of the Danganronpa franchise.

The game plays in a manner similar to the first Devil May Cry, in a way. You will be going through the same locales multiple times, with small changes. Nothing is stopping you from backtracking to a previous area even if there's no point in doing so.

During the game you are presented with different tools you can use to dispatch your enemies, however the game discourages you from doing that. If you kill an enemy with a simple headshot, you get a gold coin; if you lure enemies to a cliff and then push them off, you get no coins. If you bunch enemies together and zap them all at once, you get bronze coins. Boss fights are also incredibly easy.

The game's mechanics are introduced through very invasive tutorial screens, even though the tutorial guy is self-aware and cracking jokes at this very issue, it's still annoying and unnecessary.

          The story is uh...

The characters are pretty good, continuing the Danganronpa trend of just forgiving mass murderers because "they've changed". The kids are all traumatized in some way and the voice actors (at least the japanese ones) went above and beyond with them, you really feel sad for their backstories to the point it might be triggering to some.

Save files system is inconvenient, crappy shooter game (despite turning off autolocked) the control is annoying. Not so much lore instead it is more of a puzzle game unlike ss1+2 this is far most the worst. But, it does help understanding what is happening if thriving for the whole series plot, you would figure out the timeline of danganronpa after this game. 3/10

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls. While different in terms of gameplay from its predecessor Ultra Despair Girls is quite enjoyable from start to finish the animations are nice and the gameplay wasn't ever super tedious or annoying, the world is fun to explore, with the real highlight being the two girls we are introduced to and play as (Toko and Komaru are a gem and carry this game throughout)

For a franchise known for its diverse cast Ultra Despair Girls doesn't really have that many characters that I find super notable , however I do find old returning faces to be a relief and certain new faces to be compelling and fun to see and interact with. Really do yourself a favor and play the game for yourself, However I will warn you that (Chapter Three of the game can get really uncomfortable and can be quite insensitive at times. If you have triggers that pertain to Sexual Assault, or even just Child Abuse in general then you should probably steer clear of this game.)

Pros: Fun cast, TokoMaru, Nice Music, Pretty Decent Third Person Shooter Gameplay, Fun Collectables, Compelling themes.

Cons: Annoying Minigame challenges, Not as Diverse of a Cast as Danganronpa One, Janky Hitbox detection.

          Completed, 6/10

          Pros:
          - Truth Bullets are a limited resource, which means that you have to manage your reserves and ensure you don't run out.
          - Currency is well balanced. Any time I had a good stockpile, I was usually just about to go on a shopping spree due to finding a shop with new Bullet Blings.
          - They managed to make me actually somewhat like Toko, who was one of my least favorite characters from Trigger Happy Havoc.
          - The arcade machine puzzles are a great way to ensure that the playerbase becomes accustomed to using all the different Truth Bullets, rather than just rely on their personal favorites.
          - Each Truth Bullet has its own scenario where it excels, meaning that it's important to ensure that you use them all.

          Cons:
          - Camera is very slow, and positioned close to the character. This leads to it sometimes being difficult to target close enemies.
          - The game seems to drop Break bullet pickups on you when you run out. I don't know why they didn't just give you infinite if they were going to do that.
          - Toko is almost entirely unneeded for most combat. She's pretty much just used for scenarios where you're about to die, or if there's a ton enemies (which the electric Truth Bullet works just fine for as well).
          - The game switches between Danganronpa and generic anime artstyles frequently, with the gameplay being entirely a generic 3D anime game artstyle, and some of the cutscenes being in the Danganronpa artstyle.
          - Some parts of the game are clearly largely reused over and over, such as the defeat animations for the Warriors of Hope.
          - I don't like that Monokuma is a generic enemy. It really takes away any sense of power he had in the previous games, where he was nearly omnipotent.
          - The Warrior monorail section was just really weird. Felt like something that would be in a porn game instead of Danganronpa. (Also it's really odd to have a character with that backstory have a fight like that).
          - Some puzzles are poorly designed (you shouldn't require your playerbase to know star signs to solve a puzzle without hints).
          - Many of the darker story elements fail to hit as hard as they should, due to being surrounded by jokes immediately before and after.

All in all, this was a very mediocre run and gun game in a series of great mystery games, but I'm still marking it as recommended on the assumption that the final Danganronpa game will be better having played this game and having understood the story.

I've been playing mostly visual novels recently and Ultra Despair Girls was an average VN, so the game was a nice change of pace even though the controls and camera movements were so wonky, especially on boss fights—it was SO painful to walk around backwards looking for heals and items while fighting with the camera semi-locked onto the bosses. With that being said, only worth buying on sale .

I love Danganronpa's bright color usage, unique art style and animations; both the voice acting and soundtrack are great, and all that remained on UDG.

UDG is the worst game of the series theme-wise (child abuse); that specific part in chapter 3 was so disturbing and uncomfortable to play/watch. I'm traumatized. But overall I still enjoyed the game because the story and progression is good and the characters are amazing! Komaru is a dork, Toko has a great character development throughout the game and their dynamics are so cute and funny.

Hardcore fans of the series get an interesting enough finale and some decent character development and writing, with a clunky, mediocre, and oddly puzzle-heavy action game tacked on to your usual visual novel elements.

Those who weren't impressed with Danganronpa's anime trope characters and frequently horny writing, who were maybe carried by the killing game premise, will spot a largely problematic and exploitative game with as rough of a chapter 3 as other reviews make it out to be. I think once you get to a tongue-in-cheek minigame where you have to stop the main character from being groped you are past the point where a wink at the audience gets you a pass and just getting into lechery.

If you're looking for a game to make you uncomfortable, shake you a little, and mess with you, Welcome to Danganronpa. If you tell your friends this was the best of the franchise, they're putting you on a watchlist.

Lore about characters from Danganronpa 1 and 2 is revealed at a good pace. However, I would advise those who are planning to play 2, play this game first. DANGANRONPA GRIND 3/5:

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls

          Review

I wish Steam had an option where I could write a mixed review because I don’t think this game is bad but also not good. Unfortunately, I will put it in a negative review because for me the negatives outweigh the positives.

Ultra Despair Girls is set after the first game which makes some stuff in the 2nd game of Danganronpa make a lot more sense but also to new players who are discovering the franchise they would want to play this right? Because it is a prequel to the second game… well if that’s the case then it would probably turn someone off to not want to play the 2nd game at all. To make things easier and not messy, I will do a pros and cons list.

          Pros:

          - Komaru and Toko’s dialogue and friendship are well done and it never felt boring seeing them talk about stupid shit, especially when you pick up the books during this game. It’s very well done and while I thought Toko was a good character in the first game, in this game her character is very well written and she became one of my favorite characters. Not a top 10 mind you but very close to that list. Komaru herself is very well done as well, She starts with this trope where “WHATTT THE WORLD IS FUCKED UP????” but it’s very well executed and her arc is pretty good.

          - The Monokuma designs are so fucking cool, the beast and junk Monokumas are my favs hands down.

          - Despite the game taking place in the city, the aesthetic is well done. I was curious about how a Danganronpa game would take place outside of the school or beach from the 2nd game would work. But it works pretty well (for the most part) and the colors with red and purple are just so lively despite the blandness.

          - The menu UI is so creative and goofy showing both the contrast of Komaru and Toko’s personalities and mixing the truth bullet skills to make them powerful against Monokumas is pretty good.

          - Playing as Genocide Jack is also very fun.

          - The cutscenes of the game are so fucking beautiful. While you have the ugly cheap 3D animation, when the game shows you the paper execution style animation or the actual anime cutscenes, they are just so amazed to watch and I definitely will watch the anime because if it looks this good then surely the actual anime must look good.

          Cons:

          - Aiming in this game is atrocious. I’m using a controller because the mouse locks the camera angle below her legs and you can’t move it up so I highly recommend using a controller. The speed of the camera is limited to 5/5 and even then it’s not fast to aim, so you are leaving yourself open while trying to aim.

          - The loot pool is just… awful. You don’t know what bullets you get so it’s just the game going “Oh you need break because you ran out of them? Here is the dance bullet because you do need it. I’m also going to cram in the truth bullets in this section because despite having an arsenal of them, the only ones that matter are break, move, detect, and burn. The rest are only used for puzzles or fighting against certain enemies and maybe paralzie works if you have water near you.

          - The gameplay loop is so shit. You shoot a few enemies, watch a cutscene or watch people talk, and open a door that takes you to a challenge room where you have to solve this puzzle (or don’t, the game doesn’t punish you much for it besides affecting your rank which I stopped caring as I got to chapter 4). It’s not fun and I kept wanting to drop this game and watch a YouTube Let’s Play.

          - The game will decide if you hit an enemy or not. You could have your gun point blank at the enemy and the game will go “nuh uh uh.. Not this time, waste another bullet for me, okay?” It’s annoying as fuck and especially when you have a ton of enemies ganging up on you, you basically gotta play Russian roulette and find out which one shoots or not.

          - The characters in this game are not interesting half the time. The Warriors of Hope for an example are a mix of good writing like Monica, Kotoko and meh characters like Jataro, uninteresting characters like Masaru, and then awful characters like Jotaro. Kurokuma is also annoying as hell despite his cool design. Other characters are just mediocre and uninteresting.

          - There are way more cons of this game but I don’t want to drag this review on. I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece like the first 2 games but I was at least expecting something fun and while it was fun for a while, I just was asking the game to be finished. I personally enjoyed the game a lot the visuals are great and I love when the go to 2D it's smooth another thing I found positive is the extension on information and seeing the incident play out instead of just hearing about it while some parts made me feel slightly uncomfortable mostly the beginning of chapter 5 and toward the end of chapter 3 it overall was good in general I don't have any major criticisms about the game so other than the uncomfortable parts.

The best part of this game was the credits and the banger that came with it. Besides that, the game was ass for the most part and the reason i played it and finished it was only because I couldn't refund it

Only worth purchasing on sale, and even then, it's not really worth it. This is a not-so-good PC port of an incredibly shallow and mundane PS Vita game, and it shows in gameplay, puzzles, and most of the graphics. The biggest positive I can say is about the characters and story, which is probably the worst condemnation for what is supposed to be an action game.

All of the enemies are designed to be easily exploited by the numerous abilities of your hacking gun (attracting groups to a false alarm, electrocuting them while they're standing in puddles of water/huddled together, bowling them all over with knockback, etc.) The most interesting application by far was the actual hacking power to control robots, but this comes far too late in the game, and is used sparingly.

It's intuitive and mildly engaging to use weaknesses to your advantage, although any satisfaction of self-discovery is removed by this game's obnoxious insistence on tutorials that divulge absolutely everything. The profuse helicoptering and hand-holding is not necessary, and to my knowledge, can never be turned off.

Alternatively you have the ability to destroy them all with the nearly-invincible second protagonist, whose OP abilities were specifically made with bad players in mind (it's true, look it up.) She is necessary to progression maybe twice or thrice throughout the whole game, which is a frankly terrible and underwhelming use of somebody who accompanies you from start to finish. This kind of power could have been reserved for the easy difficulty.

All but one or two of the puzzles and riddles are cakewalks. Most of them have insultingly easy expectations of pattern recognition, deductive reasoning or simply looking at things upside down. The only difficult puzzle I can recall concerned itself with deducing the date of a birthday through vague clues, but once again, you can have your hand held directly to the answer. By now it should be apparent that this game has more hand-holding than the No Child Left Behind Act.
And while I understand the Monoku-Man set pieces are important in determining player ranks, their frequency and absence of distinct gameplay between them is revealing of how shallow this game actually plays.

The 3D graphics are not very appealing but they could be worse. The actual playable areas are very colourful and full of visual details. On the other hand, the animations in-game are universally stiff, and the lack of shading gives everything an unmercifully ugly and uncanny, porcelain appearance. These flaws are highlighted all the more in the 3D cutscenes, and I couldn't easily ignore how hideous the character's mouths and their movements are. The 2D and anime cutscenes are of much higher quality, although by no means do they salvage what you're looking at for 99% of the game. Overall, the notable lack of environmental and character lighting seriously diminishes from an atmosphere that could have been otherwise oppressive or even aesthetically pleasing.

The only salvation of this game is the dialogue and character interactions, of which there is arguably more than raw gameplay. You can get sucked into a second cutscene five steps after finishing the first one. The protagonists bicker, banter, argue and tease each other more than a R* title, and the wide range of emotions they're challenged with by all of the death and chaos around them is usually more hilarious than anything else. The hilarious voice acting on top of it makes it hard to not like them.

Considering I played it to the end and didn't leave it frustrated or annoyed, I can begrudgingly recommend this as a good experience, but it's absolutely only worth it for the dialogue. Nothing about the game entertained or charmed me like the characters did. If you prefer raw shooters with no cutscenes or stories, then you won't make it past the first chapter.

i love this game so much, it was honestly a very fun experience and i would love to play it all again blind if i could!

one of my favorite games, i love the characters, and the dynamics the characters have in it, the voiceacting was cool and i adore the character designs, also lesbian protags lolol, the 3d modle animations looked wonky but that doesnt mean i didnt enjoy them too!! i liked the gameplay SO MUCH, it was really fun and felt less limiting than just a visual novel type experience the other danganronpa games have, i hope one day they make some sort of second 3d shooter game for danganronpa!!

but, i am very aware of the reasons people dont like this game, the little moments dont make up the entire experience for me, and plus some scenes were admittedly unnecessary but its whatever, overall i really really enjoy this game but if someone is the type to get very uncomfy with the certain scenes in the game, i recommend skipping it or just not playing this game altogether if its too much!!

The main gameplay loop is shooting Monokuma enemies, which is passable, but it definitely feels like a big step down from the other Danganronpa games.

Otherwise, I found the story interesting and would recommend this game to fans of the main Danganronpa games.

To my surprise, this is a lot better than I initially expected. It even manages to completely blow mainline out of the water in some things, like the plot, or actual character development, while only slightly sacrificing gameplay and controls which I'm fine with. All in all, good stuff.

A lot of people straight-up dislike, hate, or outright skip Ultra Despair Girls, but I’ll (kinda) die on the hill that it’s a legitimately decent game.

Do I think it’s one of the best in the series? Absolutely not. The shift to a quirky ghetto survival horror style reminiscent of Resident Evil 4, instead of the usual murder mystery gameplay, and the fact that it’s a spin-off that doesn’t matter much to the trilogy, are probably why many people don’t like it or ignore it altogether.

Despite its clunkiness and weirdness, I still think it’s a fun time.

Since this is an interquel between Danganronpa 1 and 2, I can’t say much about the story without spoiling things, but I thought it was a necessary link between the two games—especially if you plan on watching the Danganronpa 3 anime, which builds on events from here.

This isn’t the usual “16 students trapped in a killing game” story, but I think it works for what it is. It’s more of a straightforward good-versus-evil narrative, with the masterminds being obvious from the start. That said, there’s still some moral complexity, both in the villains and in some of the allies who help you fight them.

The main villain group being middle schoolers adds an unsettling layer, especially when you learn about their trauma—Kotoko’s story, in particular, is uncomfortable. The idea of manipulating kids with tragic pasts into doing horrible things is disturbing but effective.

The minor characters being connected to people from the main series was amusing, though it felt a little too convenient. And then there’s Towa—everyone’s least favorite character. He’s technically on your side, but there’s a reason he’s often called the most disliked character in the whole series. I’ll just leave it at that.

The stars of the show, for me, are Komaru Naegi and Toko Fukawa. Yes, Toko survived Danganronpa 1, but considering she’s all over the advertising, I don’t think that’s a spoiler. Having the sister of the original game’s main character as the protagonist of the spin-off feels fitting. Komaru is just a normal girl with no ultimate abilities, and her dynamic with the much quirkier Toko is fantastic. They start with a lot of friction due to their very different personalities, but their friendship development is some of my favorite in the series. Watching them grow together—both in terms of story and gameplay—was genuinely enjoyable.

That said, I can’t deny the game has its flaws. This was clearly the developers’ first attempt at a third-person survival horror game, and it shows. Even with upgrades from the PlayStation Vita to the modern PC port, the camera controls are still clunky. Whether you use the automatic or manual camera options, neither feels great. If you run out of ammo on normal difficulty or higher, good luck trying to get through the random mobs before reaching a boss.

While I liked the concept of middle schoolers as villains to highlight their vulnerability to manipulation, most of the Warriors of Hope aren’t particularly likable. Kotoko and Monaca have their moments, but the rest are pretty forgettable. They serve their roles in the story, but that’s about it.

Overall, I like Ultra Despair Girls, but I get why people might skip it. It’s a spin-off with a completely different gameplay style, hit-or-miss characters, and limited relevance to the main trilogy. Still, I appreciate it for giving context to the world between Danganronpa 1 and 2, setting up Danganronpa 3’s anime, and most importantly, showcasing one of my favorite female friendships in the series between Komaru and Toko.

liked the initial game mechanics regardless of how janky it was. constantly ended up tabbing out of the game because the mouse wasn't locked on to the monitor the game was in which pulls the game out of fullscreen mode and consequently made me close the game by accident to which i had to restart from the last save. ended up learning about what happens in the third chapter and i'd rather not ruin this franchise for myself.

This game is best suited for those who have already played both Danganronpa 1 and 2, as it ties closely into the series backstory. Unlike its predecessors, which are visual novel/mystery games, this entry is more of a shooter game, which might not appeal to everyone. If you’re not a fan of shooter gameplay, watching a walkthrough could be a better option. That said, the game isn’t terrible—it’s enjoyable in its own right and provides additional context/story in the overall Danganronpa universe.

I do not like leaving reviews on things, particularly publicly, but this game feels like such a blight upon me that I feel the need to complain.

The writing is nothing short of irritating. A product of its time, sure, but horribly obnoxious. Repetitive.
Toko's incessant complaints serve no purpose besides giving the player a headache.
The writing seems to strive to be as shocking as possible - through very cheap means. It only shows devastation upon devastation and disgusting acts without providing any commentary. It comes across as either preteen vent art or downright self serving fetish content at times.
I am aware that Danganronpa in general tends to be crass, but this game feels particularly pedantic in its desire to stick to shock humor. It gets old fast and simply feels uncomfortable in its insistence.
This game unfortunately suffers from the DGR-final-chapter-writing syndrome. It repeats itself again, again, again and again. Hey, did you catch that? It repeats itself countless times. I said it repeats itself. A constant stream of despair, despair, despair - I grow sick of the word. Kicking the character, picking it back up, kicking it again. No change, nothing learned. The final chapter of this game itself feels like a looping joke. It was difficult to sit through.
The series also has this unfortunate habit of killing off every remotely likable character for the sake of it having more impact, leaving (nearly) every survivor to be an active migraine-inducing disease.

I am usually unconcerned with graphics, but I must note that this game was the first instance I have ever encountered of real-time rendering and general gameplay looking better than its prerendered cutscenes. I found myself nearly dreading cutscenes using the 3D models. If anything, at least the UI elements had a more appealing creative vision. The 2D animated scenes were also a nice surprise.

The gameplay itself was unremarkable. Hitboxes are mercilessly janky. The aiming sensitivity feels downright strange - which, by the way, having to change the sensitivity, screen settings and camera controls BEFORE you launch the game is a fucking hassle, though I am aware this is merely a port of a Vita game.

The bullet mechanic felt interesting at first, but was more of a detriment to the experience later on as more and more were added to the arsenal and made it difficult to swiftly change between them. Controlling Komaru felt clunky overall.

If there is anything positive I can say, it's that at the very least the music could be good at times, though it could be equally as repetitive.

Agh. What an annoying fucking game this was. How insulting it felt to read its dialogue.

It's a shame. Its concept's boundless potential was hopelessly squandered.
