legit cant play because of the controls and the mouse being weird
7/10
cut-scenes are the only reason i would play it for
just watch a walk through
i love this game so much, it was honestly a very fun experience and i would love to play it all again blind if i could!
one of my favorite games, i love the characters, and the dynamics the characters have in it, the voiceacting was cool and i adore the character designs, also lesbian protags lolol, the 3d modle animations looked wonky but that doesnt mean i didnt enjoy them too!! i liked the gameplay SO MUCH, it was really fun and felt less limiting than just a visual novel type experience the other danganronpa games have, i hope one day they make some sort of second 3d shooter game for danganronpa!!
but, i am very aware of the reasons people dont like this game, the little moments dont make up the entire experience for me, and plus some scenes were admittedly unnecessary but its whatever, overall i really really enjoy this game but if someone is the type to get very uncomfy with the certain scenes in the game, i recommend skipping it or just not playing this game altogether if its too much!!
The main gameplay loop is shooting Monokuma enemies, which is passable, but it definitely feels like a big step down from the other Danganronpa games.
Otherwise, I found the story interesting and would recommend this game to fans of the main Danganronpa games.
trash and borderline has cp in it and is just really weird. worst game ive ever played before.
This game is terrible, but Genocide Jack makes it worth every penny.
Actual kids die in this one. Toko is in it still fantasising about Byakuya, this time with cutscenes.
I stopped playing this game at the begginning of chapter 2, this game is so badly written. if you look at the graphics its extremely obvious how rushed this game was. everywhere you go it looks boring as hell! characters are fogettable af, just everything about it except for the gameplay just doesnt feel right
To my surprise, this is a lot better than I initially expected. It even manages to completely blow mainline out of the water in some things, like the plot, or actual character development, while only slightly sacrificing gameplay and controls which I'm fine with. All in all, good stuff.
A lot of people straight-up dislike, hate, or outright skip Ultra Despair Girls, but I’ll (kinda) die on the hill that it’s a legitimately decent game.
Do I think it’s one of the best in the series? Absolutely not. The shift to a quirky ghetto survival horror style reminiscent of Resident Evil 4, instead of the usual murder mystery gameplay, and the fact that it’s a spin-off that doesn’t matter much to the trilogy, are probably why many people don’t like it or ignore it altogether.
Despite its clunkiness and weirdness, I still think it’s a fun time.
Since this is an interquel between Danganronpa 1 and 2, I can’t say much about the story without spoiling things, but I thought it was a necessary link between the two games—especially if you plan on watching the Danganronpa 3 anime, which builds on events from here.
This isn’t the usual “16 students trapped in a killing game” story, but I think it works for what it is. It’s more of a straightforward good-versus-evil narrative, with the masterminds being obvious from the start. That said, there’s still some moral complexity, both in the villains and in some of the allies who help you fight them.
The main villain group being middle schoolers adds an unsettling layer, especially when you learn about their trauma—Kotoko’s story, in particular, is uncomfortable. The idea of manipulating kids with tragic pasts into doing horrible things is disturbing but effective.
The minor characters being connected to people from the main series was amusing, though it felt a little too convenient. And then there’s Towa—everyone’s least favorite character. He’s technically on your side, but there’s a reason he’s often called the most disliked character in the whole series. I’ll just leave it at that.
The stars of the show, for me, are Komaru Naegi and Toko Fukawa. Yes, Toko survived Danganronpa 1, but considering she’s all over the advertising, I don’t think that’s a spoiler. Having the sister of the original game’s main character as the protagonist of the spin-off feels fitting. Komaru is just a normal girl with no ultimate abilities, and her dynamic with the much quirkier Toko is fantastic. They start with a lot of friction due to their very different personalities, but their friendship development is some of my favorite in the series. Watching them grow together—both in terms of story and gameplay—was genuinely enjoyable.
That said, I can’t deny the game has its flaws. This was clearly the developers’ first attempt at a third-person survival horror game, and it shows. Even with upgrades from the PlayStation Vita to the modern PC port, the camera controls are still clunky. Whether you use the automatic or manual camera options, neither feels great. If you run out of ammo on normal difficulty or higher, good luck trying to get through the random mobs before reaching a boss.
While I liked the concept of middle schoolers as villains to highlight their vulnerability to manipulation, most of the Warriors of Hope aren’t particularly likable. Kotoko and Monaca have their moments, but the rest are pretty forgettable. They serve their roles in the story, but that’s about it.
Overall, I like Ultra Despair Girls, but I get why people might skip it. It’s a spin-off with a completely different gameplay style, hit-or-miss characters, and limited relevance to the main trilogy. Still, I appreciate it for giving context to the world between Danganronpa 1 and 2, setting up Danganronpa 3’s anime, and most importantly, showcasing one of my favorite female friendships in the series between Komaru and Toko.
It might not look like I've played many hours but I watched the complete playthrough of this like 3 years ago and have been waiting for a major sale because im an unemployed 17 year old with nothing better to do than wait for new years sales. anyway. i loved it so much, something something character development something something tokomaru.. big danganronpa fan here big toko fukawa fan big komaru fan. I own all the udg manga because I loved it so much. great game obviously with the exception of chapter 3.. yikes. but its chunsoft so. to be expected at some point. would recommend even though it garners me several odd looks when i do. 26/10 game. tokomaru.
Not my cup of tea. Nice try by the creator though. Just decided to watch the entire game in youtube.
this game is quite freaky. its also one of my favorite games ever. PLEASE PLAY THIS the dialogue is actually so fun and clever, i normally dont go looking for collectibles but in this game i tried so hard to get them all because some of them came with bonus conversations between toko and komaru
this is the kinda game where youre like "why am i playing this??" for the prologue and first chapter, then youre like "ok this is really fun" for a while then near the end of chapter 3 hits and youre back to "WHAT THE FUCK" then youre back to "oh my god this is so much fun"
liked the initial game mechanics regardless of how janky it was. constantly ended up tabbing out of the game because the mouse wasn't locked on to the monitor the game was in which pulls the game out of fullscreen mode and consequently made me close the game by accident to which i had to restart from the last save. ended up learning about what happens in the third chapter and i'd rather not ruin this franchise for myself.
overall i am going to pray and hope this game isn't canon
This game is best suited for those who have already played both Danganronpa 1 and 2, as it ties closely into the series backstory. Unlike its predecessors, which are visual novel/mystery games, this entry is more of a shooter game, which might not appeal to everyone. If you’re not a fan of shooter gameplay, watching a walkthrough could be a better option. That said, the game isn’t terrible—it’s enjoyable in its own right and provides additional context/story in the overall Danganronpa universe.
to this day its still an experience
a cool wonderful experience, this game was peak at its era holy shit
peeeeak i love shotas and lolis and komaru being a female protag for the whole game is nice only complaint is that i dont like getting vored by monokumas
I do not like leaving reviews on things, particularly publicly, but this game feels like such a blight upon me that I feel the need to complain.
The writing is nothing short of irritating. A product of its time, sure, but horribly obnoxious. Repetitive.
Toko's incessant complaints serve no purpose besides giving the player a headache.
The writing seems to strive to be as shocking as possible - through very cheap means. It only shows devastation upon devastation and disgusting acts without providing any commentary. It comes across as either preteen vent art or downright self serving fetish content at times.
I am aware that Danganronpa in general tends to be crass, but this game feels particularly pedantic in its desire to stick to shock humor. It gets old fast and simply feels uncomfortable in its insistence.
This game unfortunately suffers from the DGR-final-chapter-writing syndrome. It repeats itself again, again, again and again. Hey, did you catch that? It repeats itself countless times. I said it repeats itself. A constant stream of despair, despair, despair - I grow sick of the word. Kicking the character, picking it back up, kicking it again. No change, nothing learned. The final chapter of this game itself feels like a looping joke. It was difficult to sit through.
The series also has this unfortunate habit of killing off every remotely likable character for the sake of it having more impact, leaving (nearly) every survivor to be an active migraine-inducing disease.
I am usually unconcerned with graphics, but I must note that this game was the first instance I have ever encountered of real-time rendering and general gameplay looking better than its prerendered cutscenes. I found myself nearly dreading cutscenes using the 3D models. If anything, at least the UI elements had a more appealing creative vision. The 2D animated scenes were also a nice surprise.
The gameplay itself was unremarkable. Hitboxes are mercilessly janky. The aiming sensitivity feels downright strange - which, by the way, having to change the sensitivity, screen settings and camera controls BEFORE you launch the game is a fucking hassle, though I am aware this is merely a port of a Vita game.
The bullet mechanic felt interesting at first, but was more of a detriment to the experience later on as more and more were added to the arsenal and made it difficult to swiftly change between them. Controlling Komaru felt clunky overall.
If there is anything positive I can say, it's that at the very least the music could be good at times, though it could be equally as repetitive.
Agh. What an annoying fucking game this was. How insulting it felt to read its dialogue.
It's a shame. Its concept's boundless potential was hopelessly squandered.
Don't buy this game if u have an azerty keyboard and no controllers to replace it with cause there is NO way to change the controls or button mapping
The kids might be "slightly" mentally unstable, for sure they don't cause any "chaos"
the mouse controls are completely broken for controlling the camera
Toko's Fantasy is the best part of this game
most of the game is them taking and i do not personally like it and the graphics are sorry but its Horrible i dont recommend its a 4/10 from me
THIS GAME IS CHILD GOON BAIT DO NOT PLAY THIS SHIT DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BS I HATE 8IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT IT'S NOT WORTH IT THE WRITING SUCKS OS MUCH POTENTIAL WASTED FOR FAN SERVICE O F8 YEAR OLDS I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT
The friendship and character development throughout the entire series was so good. The 3D gameplay elevates the story as well compared to its prequels since it makes the entire story more immersive. A must play for danganronpa fans
this game is a masterpiece defenitly in my fav games list
This fleshes out Toko so much I grew to love her so much more.
i really liked this game but cannot recommend it on the basis that i have morals lol

Some people I know have described this game as Resident Evil 4 with anime girls.
I really hope that if we do get a sequel to UDG, it would be described as Bayonetta with anime boys.
absolutely not i want my money back, my hours back, my years back and my life back.
great game. good
Very cool game. My favorite part was the talking bear.
Anti-Tumblr Manifesto
For the first few 10 hours it was alright. Always liked the psycho-pop artstyle and laughed at the absolute wack writing both this and the previous games had. Plus the funny black bear started beatboxing.
HOWEVER:
Chapter 3 was by far the most depraved thing I've ever experienced in video games.
This series always catered towards the Tumblr audience, but dear god was this too far… This became something Chris Hanson would break down your door just for playing. JUST DOWN BAD.
I don’t care who/wtf you are, but whether it’s a matter of fiction or not the sexualisation of minors in media should be completely unacceptable no matter what the context. The character ‘Tokoto Utsugi’ is clearly portrayed as an extremely young minor, yet the the writers take absolutely no stops to make the most depraved scenes with her as possible. I don’t care how much Operation Centerboard did to the Japanese, but if this is how they wanna cope with it well then I’m sorry but we just gonna have to hit em’ much harder next time.
And before you unsheathe your $30 foam Katana alongside that questionable body pillow you got at ‘that’ convention; I already know you’re gonna say: ”Um but actually: having that small child slowly & forcefully be undressed alongside being exposed to the camera was for the sake of character development!! You’re just simply too retarded to comprehend the next level-writing of Kazutaka Kodaka, but to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Mor-” SHUT TEH FUCK UP
No fucking way can you justify a dozen different underwear shots as something progressive to the story. But in the end I know nothing I say will stop you from going onto reddit writing about how she’s the best character or your 40+ minute long video essay analyzing why her underwear had a strawberry pattern (sponsored by express VPN).
As a closing remark I wanted to add that; as we speak, I’m loading up the ol’ Winchester so I can completely CHUG THAT BABY DOWN. Legit gonna put Ronnie McNutt to shame. since I’ve had it with you fuckers with the anime toddler pfp and pink-blue flags. My last mark to this world will be this steam review alongside a just-as spitefully-worded email to Gaben demanding he cleanses the steam store of this filth.
2/10, Had something going for it, up until half-way through. Would rather play Concord at this point.
i took a shot every time komaru said 'normal' and now i have liver failure thanks a lot
The story takes place between Danganronpa 1 and 2; however, I recommend playing it only after completing both games. While the gameplay might not live up to expectations, I found the story enjoyable enough to keep playing.
save yourself the abyssal amount of disappointment and embarrassment and don't even waste your money on this burning pile of garbage
3 hours in so far and I don't think I'll actually finish playing.
It's a completely different experience from the other Danganronpa games. The Gameplay doesn't give much variety and frankly just feels exhausting (at least so far, though I don’t think it’ll get better).
The fact that you can only save at certain points on the map makes me want to play less as well. Also, during “events” (cutscene, sometimes just dialogue? - basically every time you’re not actually running around) you can’t access the menu, which annoyed me even more at the beginning because I wanted to save the game that way (which isn’t possible anyways).
What I also dislike is the way tutorials are handled. After reading through how to switch characters and how to use all of the different abilities I had already forgotten (or just didn’t understand) most of it when it was my turn to use them.
So far, the character writing is ok I suppose. Side characters so far have just been a plot device and only shown up for a short while each.
Generally, I like the Danganronpa games and the way the work (though this one not as much), but what consistently really grosses me out so far was the fan service. The way (underage) girls get sexualized is just not it and it really takes away from the bit of fun this game could have been.
Rather than buying I would recommend watching a playthrough (maybe there’s some that only show the important parts of the story) or possibly skipping it altogether, since it shouldn’t do much for the overall plot of the franchise.
What a goofy game, I love it lol.
you know, i play this game danganronpa, which has a character called toko fukawa, she is basically a goddess. whenever i open danganronpa and see her face, her cute smile, her sparkly eyes, i feel true happiness, i feel like my life has a goal. i put my finger on the screen and rub her cute little cheeks, and then i kiss her forehead. after i play for like 5 hours because i have no life, i go to see toko's soft, god given body and tell her: "good night toko, i love you" and i feel something in my heart. i feel like toko understands me. many times i find myself writing fanfictions of me and toko living a domestic life, going to do shopping, cooking together. you know, the normal stuff for a normal person. i hope that in the afterlife i get to reach my goal. toko fukawa. toko, i love you. toko, i adore you.
I love this game it's my fav in the franchise even though it's further in the future. I love the different gameplay from the normal games, I love the warriors of hope but if you're not about open world games then dont play it. For the rest it's amazing
Peak fiction.
i've got more hours of playtime in this game than the girls it sexualises have had years on this earth
The Toko fantasies are absolute cinema.
i barked, without fail, every single time nagito came onscreen
Resident Evil if it was good.
i freking love this game its so awesome its my favorite danganronpa game
la komaru está bien pendeja jaja no mames
I've been putting off reviewing this game since I always knew that this review would be lengthy and cumbersome to make, I am finally going to make it, though.
I find ultra despair girls to be the strange black sheep of the dangranronpa series, it certainly feels like it is trying to be so many things at once that it doesn't really know what it wants to be as a a game. This leads to alll the aspects of the game being underdeveloped and/or with unexplored potential.
THE GAMEPLAY
The gameplay feels slow, repetitive and clunky. The control of komaru is as barebones as it can get, the mechanics introduced in this game such as the gun modifiers feel more like an afterthought than anything else. Though the different ammo types the gun can use shake up things a little.
THE CHARATCERS
This is actually my main problem with the game, the characters are few and far between. There's Komaru and Toko which I consider to be the best protagonists out of all danganronpa games. Moreover, the strongest aspect of this game is the moments and dynamic between these two. However, the supportive characters are just NOT it.
They feel more like plot devices whose only purose is to contribute to the development of Komaru and Toko as characters and their arcs. For instance, a game such as persona 4 manages to make pretty much every character feel like an actual, fully realized person instead of characters that have no development or message to give to the player.
THE FANSERVICE
This is another huge problem the game has, it is WAY, WAY overly sexualizated at basically every chance it gets to. Some may enjoy it but I did not. For instance, Komaru in the GJack fight, where GJack essentially tores her clothes appart with her sicssors were completely unnecessary and contribute literally absolutely nothing to the story. Yeah go and tell me "B-but it was necessary to see Komaru's underwear in that scene, Im telling you, NECESSARY!!"
There's also the togami scenes with Toko's fantasies, where she shows her love for him. For me these cutscenes feel cringeworthy and do not engage me at all, they are probably made for comic relief but for me they are hard to watch and instead of engaging me in the game they make me question what my life has become to end up playing this game.
Finally there's everything that Kotoko does in this game that is worth metioning, because ALL of it is fanservice. She captures Komaru and puts her in a machine that essentially gropes her body parts in a sexual manner. This scene literally serves NO purpose AT ALL. Not for the plot, Not for comic relief, Not for the development of the characters. Nothing, it's just random fanservice for the sake of satisfying the anime coomers that this game wants to appeal so bad to, driving all other kinds of people away from it.
CONCLUSION
Overall while I've been expressing my distate for this game, I genereally have a mixed opinion on it, I do think it's the worst game in the series and not worth the price it's selled for. Moreover, the characters that arent Komaru and Toko are underdeveloped in the game and sometimes needlessly and randomly sexualized which ruins any chance of engagment this game could give me. If you finally add the clunky to control gameplay, this game is just the definition of a 6/10 in my opinion.
I really wanted to like this game because it's the one where Komaru is but I can't get myself to, it's oversaturation of fanservice and lack of development of characters and gameplay make the game feel strange.
I don't understand why a game about the tradegy of THH was made this way out of all possible ones but it is absolutely a underexplored idea with lots of potential, that thanks to UDG, will probably remain that way for the rest of the series lifespan.
6/10
