HOLY WARS
Holy Wars
Holy Wars

The game is perfectible, but honestly, I had a blast.
It reminded me by spirit, games like sacrifice or populous, but at a little scale.
Playing the "Prophet" in a dystopic world, sending zealots to a certain death they are eager to go for you is ... particular.
The questions regarding religions are interesting.
But this game is not that long. i regret this point.
Great atmos in style of syndicate with extra neon but gameplay too repetitive and units act like blobs. Low resolution graphics in the guise of old school RTS. Too much clunky micro management whilst in combat.
Disjointed gameplay and poor AI also handicap this. Especially path finding , combat and absence of unit stance settings .
Not fun enough to want complete campaign (got half way) and no difficulty settings even on skirmish they seem nominal. Its a game it should be fun.
Has potential but not realised.
I enjoyed it some what. If you like conquest games with a story this might be for you.
I hit an issue early on where the Worshippers would not group up on one spot. Even with a double click. Which made them a tad bothersome. Crawler tactics work overly well. I suffered no zerg rush to challenge me. Maybe there was a zerg rush, but I was overly prepared for it. Not really sure. The second glitch was when I meet the Cult of the Fibonacci. The game froze. Could click to other units. Tried saving and released I don't care to.
If you read this far I have to say. THE STORY IS FANTASTIC! I am in it for this story. I personally want to see how the story ends. I'm a huge cyberpunk fan and this tickles my dystopian senses better than surfing real world news. I feel, I will give it a rest and come back to the game later.
At this time I would not suggest this game with out saying that I hit some technical issues.
Subscribe and share my divine teachings, new follower, so that the blockchain never breaks. Thou shalt no interrupt its programming in any way or you might succumb to the virus of the right hand of our Great Administrator.
Seriously now, this is great looking RTS titles which drops the ressource gathering mechanic for the gathering follower mechanic. You might choose between three ways of teaching which apparently are the factions in this game. There's no base building whatsoever but the premise, game design and setting are definitely worth the money. New RTS titles which aren't remakes or remasters are pretty rare nowadays, so supporting them when they're good is crucial if you want to give incentive for the market to create some.
Considering it's on sale now, I'd definitely pick it up.
This is a game where i wish Steam had a "mixed" rating.
PROS:
- a unique RTS system: you don't "produce" units from barracks, you recruit random people from the street in to your religious army
- an interesting take on the cyberpunk setting: where most other games focus on technical espionage, Re-legion focuses on faith and religion in a cyberpunk enviroment
- pretty nice cyberpunk estetics
- pretty nice synthwave soundtrack
CONS:
- other than the religion take, the story is pretty bland and short; also, the ending isn't satisfying; it's a vague cliffhanger to nowhere
- some of the the gameplay mechanics are pretty clunky and the collision & pathfinding - especially for the larger units - can be cumbersome
- the color scheme can get jarring after some playtime; i was hoping that at least in religion wars (aka skirmish maps) i could change the color of teams to something other than purple & red, but nope
- the voiceacting isn't very good in my opinion
If you're a hardcore fan of RTS games and enjoy Cyberpunk & Synthwave, this game might be up your ally; otherwise you should probably get it on a sale if possible (like i did).
I like the overall idea, the dystopian neon-clad cyberpunk world, the spin on resource management. Pathfinding is flaky, the AI is stupid, sometimes the frame rate tanks. But I could have lived with that. Unfortunately, the whole game is a buggy mess bordering on unplayable. 2 out of 3 save games do not load, pair this with random in-game crashes and you have a match made in hell. A waste of money and time.
As much as i want to love this game i just cant recomend it. It has poor AI, no choice of difficulty in the campaign, its a micro management hell, bugs galore, poor pathfinding, and a dumb plot. I recomend you find a different strategy game because this just wont meet your expectations.
Good concept - terrible execution
Pros
Unique Setting,
Interesting unit designs,
Good Soundtrack,
Somewhat interesting plot ideas.
Cons
Idiotic Mission design (especially mission 6)
Somewhat halfbaked overall plot that get progressively worse as the game goes on.
Not a very deep plot - wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle, as the saying goes.
If you look closely the maps are recycled often
Poor interface that lacks precision when that's what's needed most.
I want to give a special shout out to mission six which is like a list of everything that you shouldn't do with mission design. You start off with your base being undefended and no way of reaching it in time. Additionally you have crappy units to begin with which can't enable you to reach the base in time. In the end the only way the mission will be beaten is through sheer random luck and no skill. The mission designer for this and most of the previous missions should be replaced.

Google Analytics ohne Pause aktiv. Unity Crashanalytics und Ingameanalytics machen einem das Spiel direkt von Anfang an madig. Ebenso selbstverständlich ist es, dass Verbraucher dieses Verhalten auch noch würdigen.

i really like the concept of the game, but currently it is unplayable...
for me the mouse pointer is late half a second after each movement, it's very frustrating, i even tried to put settings on low...the only game that does this (i have a ROG laptop and play much more demanding games on high settings).
i hope they fix the issues soon, i would really like to play it...
I don't write reviews for game ever to be honest but I think this game needs some support, I bought this game the day it came out and I love it, its unique the style and colours of it is great, yes there is only a campaign but this is only for the time being a skirmish mode is being made as I write this review. Please bear in mind the developers are a small company and for a small company this is impressive, there good graphics an interesting story line (which I believe can be followed on with a prequel or sequel) updates are being made to the game and do have impacts to the game, its cool to watch the game grow. People keep comparing this game to big titles but look at the size of their company aswell as look at the style, their company will most likely be bigger and the style be majorly different.
To conclude the game is unique, the graphics are good, the style and colour is great, the game is still having work done to it and may take a while but because its a small company and the devs are doing their best, I'd recommend buying the game, the more people who buy it the more it can grow
Though a real rough launch, they have stuck with it, and with many major patches it's become a pretty great game. The atmosphere and rather unique gameplay environment was right up my alley and the concept and setting are extremely great. the frequent updates and shift and attempt to listen to feedback and have brought much improvement. The game has great potential to be a major RTS contender and they do seem to be heading that way. I'm having a lot of fun playing and suffered no tech issues to speak of so far. I think they've squashed a lot of the bugs and problems that hindered the launch. The cult setup is a great one. Whilst you don't get much control in its creation, ideology, (hopefully more control in the future, you do get optional moral choices you can find that help shape its identity, as well as the wider story critique of ideology groups. Overall, it's more thematic than mechanical but immersion is in the eye of the beholder.
Recommended if you're looking for something a bit more unique than the typical rehash RTS. and seems to only be getting better.
I WANT to give this game a good review, because the concept and setting are extremely great.
BUT.... Well, it's not a bad game, but it isn't a good game either.
The bad things:
-There isn't a whole lot to do. There's the campaign at the moment, and that's it.
-Saving the game is awlays a huge risk, because you can NOT be sure you'll be able to load your safe. Most saves get stuck at 99% loading, and then just keep on loading forever. Because of this I have started to save frequetly, but to me it seems that has only made matters worse, as I now only can load 1 out of 5 saves, where before I could load every second save or so.
-Using your heroes, aside from the Prophet himself is an unecessary risk. If they die, you lose, period, Game over. They just do not provide enough fighting strength and value for that risk, and one well placed artillery strike from the enemy can kill your heroes in an instant, so you can't even react.
-Sometimes the keyboard shortcuts (which are ESSENTIAL) change, for no appearant reason. Usually "v" is for "attack everything in your path", but sometimes "V" randomly changes to "retreat", which should be "N" usually.
-The audio is not normalized. Some things are suddenly very loud, while others are nearly silent. Sometimes it seems to work good for hours, and then you'll get the audio-disco again.
-Some units are so hard to use properly that you do not use them at all, like martyrs. Some other units are so strong, that you'll use them all the time. Using spy drones or invisible confessors to provide visibility and then using artillery to just burn whatever enemy unit you have discovered is unbeatable and OP. Since it's so effective, but slow, it makes the game boring. The only countermeasure is not using artillery because of that.
-The story and the characters... could easily be so, so much more likeable and better, with little changes
-The game is advertised as "creating your own cult", but you actually have very little room for individuality. No matter which dogma and faith you choose, they are very similar and there are no optical differences, aside from a different logo. Even your style of gameplay is the same with all 3 faith options. All those 3 options do, is to provide you with different abilities and passive skills, which overlap - there are around 3 "unique" skills, the rest of them is shared in every faith.
Now, the good things:
+The soundtrack is amazing. I just love it.
+SOME units sound really badass. (Others though... very amateur)
+Getting the hang of micromanagement and actually using the individual skills of units is rewarding and fun
+The setting, at least visually, is absolutely damn cool (The background story is cheap though, sadly.)
+The overall concept, the mix of classical base-building-RTS elements with dynamic ones (think Dawn of War 2) is great and feels fluent, as you can recruit new units on the go.
+The moral choices are cool (but don't have enough consequences to feel like you really did something different)
This game, I'd say, wins the price for wasted potential. IF the developers keep working on it, it could become the first and best Cyberpunk RTS game there is. If they don't, the game will vanish completely and be forgotten. Which would be a shame. I want to see this game become what it could be. All of the issues seems like they could be "easily" fixed, compared to issues of other games which seem unredeemable. But something tells me they won't be fixed.
So, if you are a developer reading this - Please, keep improving the game. It could be so great. It doesn't deserve to stay this way.
And if you are a player considering buying the game:
If you love Cyberpunk, the "Cult-Concept" and RTS, buy it. It can be fun. But don't expect too much.
If you are looking for a great, quality RTS game... you will be disappointed. Rather wait, until the most dire problems are fixed.
This is a game I'd recommend to buy in a sale, not at full price, not in the state it is now.
TL:DR: Huge pontential, doesn't use that potential. It's an "Okay"-game that could be so much more.
Update after completing the game:
The good:
- soundtrack
- cyberpunk setting and aesthetics
The bad:
- still buggy month after release (still crashes during loading save, after ending the mission, after in-game choice, achievements not unlocking)
- repetitive mission design
- micromanagement
- short campaign
The list of bugs is not that long, but this one is most severe
Here's the thing, I really want to enjoy this game. I love the concept of the game without a doubt and purchased it without a second thought. But I am going to be refunding the game due to a couple aspects of the game that ruin it for me.
First is the inconsistant story/cutscenes which many of the other reviewers already mentioned. Audio/Subtitiles not matching, uneven story progression, character development either odd, rushed, or actually backtracking in some cases just so some other character can give you a mission.
Next is combat. By far the most annoying point of the combat is the AI. You have a mix of ranged/mellee units? Click on an enemy and watch as your melee units litterally run by the guy you click on so that everyone can be in range before they start attacking. Talking about combat one of the most jaring and immersion breaking points for me is the attack animations or lack there of for melee units. The damage that units will deal/recieve does not match the animations of most melee units.
The Minimap is a pain to look at when you trying to get a feel for whats going on with the color scheme of your buildings litterally being almost the same color of the map making it next to impossible to look at. And everytime you mouse over the minimap it expands automattically which sounds nice but when you are trying to select a specific spot on the map and all of a sudden it expands you have to reorient yourself to pick the point you want to move the camera.
The Economy is a mess for the most part with there being credits, faith, and individual units faith (or whatever you want to call it) most of the time there is no easy way to boost individual units faith unless your micromanage your main character to do sermons with one small group at a time. Then there is a max credit limit for some odd reason which just makes it so that if you take some time to build up if you get into a big fight and lose a lot of your expensive units you have to wait just as long as the first time to rebuild them which makes for a lot of hurry up and wait situations.
The UI also needs work as it is unnecessairly clunky and unwieldly.
I will keep an eye out for this game though and if it does get to a level which I can look past some of its story issues I will buy again but for now its just not for me.
This is an update.
I picked this up the moment it became available, as I loved its look, premise and the sort of gameplay it promises. I'm a few hours in, and I want to give you a better idea of what it's like. It's certainly a Real Time Strategy game, but it plays more like a the Dawn of War 2 campaign, where you move through a largely static map defeating opponents and building up your assets. It's not a hectic base-management-and-fighting simulator where you're rushing to keep up with your opponent. I personally don't mind that, but if you're looking for "classic" RTS action, this isn't it.
Also, while I enjoy it, the criticisms leveled against it aren't wrong. It has bugs, the controls are wonky and it's definitely a low-budget game. I've run into a game-stopper that prevents me from moving forward, which is bad. On the other hand, the developers are hands on, responsive to issues, and have already issued one patch. This is probably better thought of as "Early Access" at this point, and maybe they should have called it that.
I still like it, as you can see from the hours I've put into it, and I don't plan on asking for a refund. If you're willing to help the developers out and you like the premise as much as I do, go for it. Otherwise, hold off, wait a bit, and see how it pans out.
Interesting concept with lackluster in overall product.Traditional but old RTS gameplay, unintuitiative ui, wonky ai, repetitive mission and some technical bug (especially one that won't let you proceed when finish the mission, seriously??).
..
It's feels unifinished and rushed in every aspect.Even I didn't put expectation much because it's a game from small dev (and yes, I wishlisted since announcement for I have a soft spot for indie game and cyberpunk theme...) I can't recommend it in this sorry states, maybe after some patches and fixes and discount that I may reconsider to 'subscribe' my faith into the dogma of 'Truth and salvation through crypto-bible in holy blockchain' of Re-Legion....
First Impressions
I've only played for about 2 hours so i'm not writing it off yet but...
Its clearly unfinished and lacking major polish right now. The entire concept is brilliant. For those of you old enough to recall Syndicate Wars with the ability to gain followers to your cause this will feel very familiar and welcoming. The actual gameplay is great, the need to gain followers to your cult to sustain your troops is far better than simply building men in a barracks.
Unfortunately right now the gameplay is let down by a very unfinished game. Graphics are poor, controls are not fantastic and the UI is very clearly in need of much more polish. Troops lack an ability to patrol or guard areas which makes the later missions a real micro manage of flicking between each of the different points in the map you control in order to tell your followers what to do or make sure they are healing.
Buildings are useful and serve different purposes although the upgrade path for each of them is small and the lack of ability to place defensive structures to protect them other than very weak turrets is disappointing.
The upgrades for your leader however seem interesting and i've had fun using different techniques to take over neutral NPCs.
Actual missions seem very repetative so far, a case of capture this building, destroy this building etc. is going to get old way before the very short campaign of 9 missions is completed.
As a result the length of the game will struggle to top 7-8 hours at current pace.
Major disappointment is the fact that there is only one campaign available and no skirmish mode as well as the already confirmed lack of multiplayer. All of this supports the concern that the game is just not ready yet and despite its very reasonable price at launch there just isn't enough here to keep you playing once the missions become cut and paste.
Overall I was really looking forward to Re-Legion, I was very surprised when the launch date shifted from March to the end of January but now having played it this simply feels like a bit of a cash grab to get players in whilst they continue finishing off the content. Not the new RTS I was looking for and sad as a result
I'm going to be honest here, I refunded the game. Not because it's a bad game, but because it isn't a game for me.
Still, I'm going to leave a positive review. The game is well rounded, it has a good concept in a setting I enjoy.
Start your own cult, fight other cults and the big corporations running everything. I've seen people saying this game is a mix of Dawn of War 2 and Syndicate and I'd say that is close to the gameplay you can expect.
Convert your converts into stronger units when you select them, take over building for boosts and upgrades, give your cult leader new powers to enhance him/your units.
If you enjoy a strategy game in the trend of DoW2 in a Syndicate jacket and with some ocultism sprinkeld here and there then you'll most likely enjoy this game.
The game is just.. not finished yet. Can't recommend it.
For example, when you finish a stage, you have options to continue, go to the main menu, load a save file, etc. NONE of these buttons work, except for load game. So you need to alt f4 out of the game and rerun it to start the next stage (thankfully you can continue from the next stage even if you force quit the application). I know this is not a one time thing since it happened with both of the first two stages.
There are also discrepancies between subtitles and actual voice over, which is kind of jarring (one hilarious example is the prophet saying "the darkest part of the web" or something like that, while the subtitle says "dankest part of the web").
The pathfinding isn't amazing. Units like hackers tend to get stuck when you want them to start working on buildings. And unit AI seems kinda derpy in general. For example preachers are supposed to go around and convert units, but after a while they just give up and you have to reassign them. And sometimes turrets will just stop shooting enemies until you notice and manually tell them to attack.
Selecting units with group commands (like ctrl 1 to create group 1, then push 1 to select the group) are very buggy. I can't reiterate how infuriating this is. I'll find myself wanting to add units to a group, and it'll add random units from the other side of the map to the group. Buildings (turrets) are selected just as easily as units in the same unit group, making it annoying to filter them out, etc.
The minimap is also quite annoying. It'll zoom out when you mouse over it, which means that it's hard to accurately click somewhere fast. In addition, the color of your team is dark purple, which melds perfectly into the background of the map. Making it pretty much impossible to tell what's going on at a glance.
The Dogma tree which seemed to be marketed as amazing choices and such don't really seem to be. You pick one of three cult types, which unlocks a dogma tree. There doesn't seem to be any exclusive picks here, you just have a certain amount you can pick (you start with 1 after finishing the first stage). The bonuses are pretty boring, such as "units are more resistant against conversion" or "raise your population limit". I was hoping it would be way more interesting with moral dilemmas and such. Like how frostpunk works. An example would be to enable child labor or unlocking daycare for kids (and later they can help out doctors and such if you didn't force them into the mines).
The story is marketed as mature. The first cut scene kind of was, but all the ingame stuff so far doesn't seem like it. You have some silly things, like one of the major cult types is preaching the gospel of the blockchain (derp). And there is also some really jarring dialogue. For example, at the end of the first chapter your character holds a really aggressive sermon as a prophet. Then his very first line the next chapter is talking to his new companions about how strange/silly/whatever it is to form a cult ("what's next, dancing?"). In general character consistency seems quite poor so far. I also can't quite put my finger on it, but the language of the characters seem kind of... off (strange). Like the choice of words and sentence structure and such.
Edit: Some additional notes after playing further:
The maps are incredibly repetitive. And the controls keep being awful as well. Half the time you try to select a unit group, it refuses to do so. Also, the missions have a tendency to teleport a character into the middle of an enemy army. If their retreat route is blocked (especially if you got the spider guys that move really slow), then you risk losing the hero due to a cutscene. This is made infinitely worse because losing a hero instantly fails the mission. One example I had was that there was a corridor that is barely wide enough to accomodate one of your big units. I went in with them first, and then the cut scene triggered and teleported one of my heroes in front of all of those fat units. And guess what's in the next room? Literally hundreds of units. Cut scene ends, and she can't get out of there due to the fat spiders and dies. And did I mention there's no autosave feature (or if there is it doesn't work)...? After an extended period of play the audio also starts to get screwed up and distorted.
I'm a couple hours in, the game is funny and some mechanic are new and interesting, theres some graphic problem that makes the FPS drop but overall is a good launch.
While as I said I'm just 2 hour in and at mission 3 theres just one thing that worries me and is how big this game is.... there seem to be only 9 levels, aniway I'll update my review later.
Aniway for me is worth its money, also, very nice soundtrack
