As one of the achievments says, that didn't age well
Game just feels slow, empty and boring, and the lack of background music most of the time doesn't help

And looks fine.
But the stability is not there.
Originally developed by Wideload and released back in 2005. Stubbs the Zombie is a third person action/adventure that has a simple gameplay loop but is carried by a short runtime as well as dark humor and raunchy humor of the mid 2000's. It takes place in an retro-futuristic version of 1959. Believe or not since the game was an original Xbox exclusive it was created using the Halo engine. It's actually a funny selling point that was on the box art of the physical game. I still have it.
There are 12 levels in total and they vary in length. Overall the game shouldn't take but five hours maybe even less now that the load screens between levels has been eliminated. While nice and shows how far gaming has come the loading screen for Stubbs was unique to me at that time in 2005. Each load screen for a level had it's respective artwork but as the game was loading the color of the art would slowly be overtaken by a sickly green while zombies chanting "brains" got louder until the entire screen was a sickly green and the level would then load in.
Stubbs has a gameplay loop that has you go through a level causing havoc and turning everyone into zombies. The zombie army you build in an level is actually pretty weak. They die pretty easily and they're best used to distract enemies or overwhelm them in numbers but you can also friendly fire your own zombies. Through the game Stubbs will unlock four different powers where he uses a part of his own body as a weapon. They all have gauges and you must refill them by eating brains. Simply killing an enemy with your hands or power-ups does not count.
The worst thing about this remaster is the removal of its awesome soundtrack. The original soundtrack was banging. The original developers had modern bands do covers of oldies such as Mr. Sandman, Lollipop, Earth Angel & many more. The songs are in the game but only in level 4. In the original game the songs would play on the main menu and a few times throughout select levels. I would definitely buy the OST or listen to it on Youtube since they took the OST off of Spotify.
Overall I heavily recommend but possibly on sale. $20 is a pretty steep price for a game that can be beaten in 3-5 hours for today. The game really does not have any replayability except speedrunning the game for achievement as well as beating it on the hardest difficulty. But were talking about 2005 hard difficulty. You might just pull all your hair out.

I have a fondness for this game from the early 2000s. It was a game that brought me joy and happiness. The nostalgia hit hard. i think it still holds up!! just charming as hell and silly simple fun ! bit short but enjoyed the ride. for the 5th time maybe?!?!

So I tried this port on PC a while ago and it just wouldn't stop crashing. Now that I own a Steam Deck I looked into how well it runs on Proton and apparently it runs without problems, so I bought it again. I had one crash during the tutorial and other than that the game ran perfectly fine through the entire playthrough.
Gameplaywise I'm shocked how well this game still holds up. The Zombie parts are really well made, vehicles control like a more floaty Halo version and controlling NPCs with guns feel like a slightly clunky third person shooter.
It's a comedy game and that's where the game really shines. Ripping someone's arm off and them giving comments like "that was my second favorite arm" or eating someone's brain while they just say "ouch ouch ouch" is great. The story also has some really funny cutscenes and moments throughout. Absolutely worth a few playthroughs.
Time to finish: ~6 hours

i love the game stubbs the zombie such a classic played it to death as a kid but now what an awful port always crashes id be more pissed off but i only spent one euro but still the crashes suck stay away

This game keep crashing when I playing it, even tough I running windows 7 compability and D3D9.dll extension for older program or game included. I just bought this game because winter sale discount. For older game that keep crashing with high end spec computer in 2024, that was absolutely let down for retro game community in general. For better, Aspyr please fix and patching this issues. Thank you.
I love this game but I literally can't play it without it freezing at random. I have tried every fix that people have come up with and it still won't work. playing a emulated version is more stable than this, and I already tried to fix it for long enough that I can't refund now.

An older game I've been meaning to get to for years, and I'm glad I did. It shows its age by now, but the fun atmosphere and tons of charm make it a blast to play.
this game is a classic i used to play it a lot on original xbox and its super fun zombie brain eating action game i love the squad of zombies helping out and its 1 dollar on sale its good deal for almost 3 hour game if you love zombies and you wanna have goofy time eating brains with funny story give it a buy 10/10

Stubbs the zombie is an undead love story in which you: kill a man over a hotdog; have a dance off with the chief of police; urinate in a town's water supply and cause said town to be nuked. This rough around the edges rebel may not have a pulse, but certainly has both humour and heart.
great game ive played it tons of times its simple to learn and its a pretty quick game it does occasionally crash but so do other games its a fun game and i would recommend it to anyone
Used to play this on a mid tier AMD card at 70 fps, which for an older game is fine I suppose. Got a newer card and now it runs worse, and is capped at 34 fps with no reasoning whatsoever. Options are so bare bones and not worth trying to resolve. Would not recommend especially with newer hardware as it is a very shoddy experience :(
Stubbs really is just a classic hidden gem. I originally found this game via a demo disk on my friend's xbox (the original one). I was and still am a big zombie fan, so a game where I got to be the zombie was irresistible. To then have it be the half insane fever dream comedy show that is Stubbs? Well that's just a whole extra cake on top.
Played the original demo on those old Xbox demo disks, always wondered what the whole game was like. Eh, fine I guess. Gameplay was engaging enough. Cutscenes were amusing enough. Just eh.
This game is pretty awful, I really tried to give it a chance. It has nothing to do with it being an older game either, there are plenty of even older games that are amazing, this just isnt one of them. It is very slow, the tutorial is TRASH, and the game play is slow, clunky and repetitive, and there is barely any fun to be had. There are so many other great games that are cheaper and SO much better, please dont waste your money, this game was not good when it was released and it is even worse now!!!

Played it as a kid many years ago so I thought that it would be a good idea to see if this game still holds up. It is not as good as I remember but I am impressed how good and fun this game still is. I was enjoying it from start to finish and would love to play it more. I finished my playthrough on hard difficulty.
Pros:
- Unique system where you are the zombie. Surprisingly it is very well done and requires some strategy on how you approach enemies.
- Nice humour that is making fun of the old USA lifestyle. Quite a lot of funny references which put a smirk on my face.
- Good Soundtrack. I forgot about that soundtrack and I am glad that I was able to find it again after all those years. Certainly I will add it to my playlist.
Cons:
- Quite short, Only 12 missions. It would be nice to have some more modes, challenges, unlocks and so on.
- The game feels quite old when it comes to level design and graphics. It might not fit well with a younger audience.
I think that this is the only game that handles well being on the other side during the zombie apocalypse. If you are not afraid of outdated graphics and gameplay that lacks markers what do do next I can for sure recommend this game. Too bad that there is no sequel or some other game where those ideas would be expanded. It would be cool to see games with similar mechanics in the modern game with bigger scale like open world or something like Dead Rising ect.

Hilarious, charming, and full of just enough challenge to make this a game worth going through from beginning to end. The addition of commentary hidden through the game is also a nice touch, although I found myself unable to enjoy it from time to time because I had to concentrate more on the game than listen to the developers. Part of what makes this a challenging game at times is the things that come with this re-release from the past, like cameras not angling right and zombies not always coming when you call. Does this make it bad? No. Does this make me want a remake of this game? Yes, BUT it is the little glitches and things that do make this game nostalgic. At the end of the day, this is a game worth all that this re-release brings.
