В игре Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones вам предстоит спуститься из обреченного Аркхема в жуткие глубины Бездны. Вы должны создать персонажа, основываясь на архетипах 1920-х годов, и прорубить себе путь сквозь полный загадок изломанный мир.Вас ждут отчаянные схватки с могущественными силами за пределами человеческого понимания. Физические битвы здесь доводят до изнеможения, колдовство оборачивается страшными последствиями, а стычки с неописуемо ужасными тварями грозят свести вас с ума. Порой единственное спасение от того, кто притаился за порогом, – это повернуть прочь и бежать без оглядки.
Особенности:
- Нарисованный от руки двумерный мир, пронизанный атмосферой вселенского ужаса.
- Противники, декорации и сюжетные линии, вдохновленные культовыми произведениями Лавкрафта. Вам предстоит принять участие в заданиях, основанных на ваших любимых историях, но ход событий будете определять уже вы сами.
- На выбор представлено 8 архетипов главного героя, у каждого из которых – своя предыстория и свой набор навыков.
- В этом злополучном походе вас будут сопровождать разнообразные чудные спутники: одинокий допотопный Чужак; павший на Великой войне солдат, которого реанимировал Герберт Уэст. Этих и других диковинных созданий вы сможете принять в свой отряд.
- Психическое состояние вашего персонажа влияет на выбор реплик в диалогах. Психические заболевания могут стать для вас как помехой, так и подспорьем. В мире, сошедшем с ума, иногда проще быть безумцем.
- Система верований определяет, как ваши персонажи справляются с искаженной реальностью нового Аркхема, а также с какой скоростью у них восполняется показатель психики. Также система верований открывает уникальные ветки диалогов, расширяя возможности для ролевого отыгрыша.
- Оригинальная система заклинаний, в которой вы иногда теряете больше, чем приобретаете. Под знатоком оккультных наук понимается вовсе не тот, кто умеет испускать разноцветные снаряды из кончиков пальцев. Черная магия в Stygian могущественна, но она может губительно сказаться на вашем разуме, вашем здоровье и, возможно, много на чем еще.
- Пошаговые тактические бои в двумерной перспективе, похожие на те, что были в классических играх из серии Heroes of Might and Magic.

Turn-based Lovecraftian RPG with a lot of replayability, great atmosphere, fantastic sound design and solid combat, Stygian is a game oozing with thatt particular atmosphere i think lovers of all things H.P. Lovecraft will enjoy. Manage your sanity, solve quests, and discover Eldritch truths that lay at the end of the journey. A rather short game of some 13-15 hours, i found it very enjoyable and recommend it to all lovers of the genre.
Probably one of the best Lovecraftian games out there.
Interesting, but feels incomplete.
It is one of the best if not the best adaptation of Lovecraft's work in terms of atmosphere and storytelling but it is very much unfinished and buggy mess.

It's unpolished and incomplete.
The first half of the game has a lot of interactions, good writing, combats and exploration and then once you reach the point of no return, the game abruptly ends. It's kind of sad because there are very solid foundations for an outstanding Lovecraftian rpg in there but it seems like the studio just released before they got to finish it.
I was hoping that they would update further but it's been years now and it's clearly not happening. It's a
shame really.
Half finished broken mess
this game is awful. It has a cool premise or world overall, but the implementation of battle systems and the non description of items in the game, actions such as using spells or items in the game etc are awfully implemented. i wish I could have refunded this game but its too late to unfortunately. a 2 out of 10 kinda game
I'm about 1/2 through the game (based on I've deciphered half of the poem) and wanted to give my first real review on Steam to Stygian. This game came out in 2019 but I've sat on it until recently when my life has finally slowed down. And as I prepare to go back to school to further my writing degree, I was looking for something that would be inspiring for my own creative ventures. Stygian seemed to be the perfect choice.
Frankly, this is by far the best Lovecraftian game I've played, impeccable from the narrative to graphic style. You can tell the team put in real effort in crafting the world and making it as immersive and rich as possible. I love how the dialogues and the lores are written. It has a strong Lovecraftian tone but regardless a unique personal flavor. Each item, each glyph is carefully drawn. Each character sprite has some little variation just enough to distinguish them even if they're just bypassing NPCs w/o real interactive points. And that shows an outstanding attention to details.
Now, don't get me wrong: this game is incomplete and I agree that the team should have clarified that on the product page instead of only making the announcement on their kickstarter. There definitely are enough bugs to make me frustrated here and there, but the story is enough to keep me going. I did some research before installing the game so I already know that the ending would be anti-climax/somewhat unsatisfactory. But you know what? That's an imperfection I'm willing to endure because, if you know Lovecraft well enough, many of his original stories too, feel unresolved and unfinished. Although in Lovecraft's case it was intentional, in Stygian's case it was an unwilling compromise given the develop team's restriction of funding and the "all-or-nothing" options. If you read the open letter on their Kickstarter, you'd probably have agreed with them: instead of rushing a finale chapter, leaving it on a cliffhanger is a more respectful option to the game and the script itself.
A lot of people here gave negative reviews due to the incompletion and the bugs, and there is no arguing against those shortcomings. But personally, I'd rather treat Stygian as a piece of art than a mere game because it surpasses "just a game" on so many levels and, by far, exactly what I'd expect a Lovecraftian game to look/feel like. I do with the developers would come back and release more installments and I'd happily pay for it, but that might just be wishful thinking given it's been five years and there hasn't been any update. It does seem like the developer has a new Stygian game coming up, however, judging by the teaser videos the team has ditched the handdrawn style and opted for a standard 3D build, and frankly, the art style of this game was at least 50% of its charm.
Awesome game, filled to the brim with Lovecraft literature lore. Survival mechanics bring a new taste to old school rpg
As a greatest hits collection of Lovecraft stories, it's great. If you're a fan of Lovecraftian stories and elements, you'll like it. The RPG elements leave a lot to be desired, if you were looking for a Call of Cthulhu type RPG this isn't it unfortunately.
Way the game is structured implies that a bunch of character builds are viable when really only pure combat characters are worth anything, so if you wanted to try a character that was focused around stealth and investigation, or science and speech you're out of luck.
Important concepts and rules about what you are able and not able to do aren't properly communicated to the player.
Cool idea poorly executed.
