I have mixed feelings on this one.
I think lack of midair control is typically expected from the genre so that isn't necessarily an issue on its own, but many levels feature long jumps or chains of bounces on e.g. balloons or jump pads where once you start the sequence you have- as far as I know- literally no control until the final landing, and this makes the acceptable range for angle of entry quite narrow in many cases. On the other hand, when you're bouncing over normal terrain you can spin the ball for a burst of adjustment when you land, and it's easy to overshoot that adjustment, especially when falling onto a sharp angle doesn't send you careening as fast or far as you might expect. The ball also accelerates very quickly while grounded, which makes some obstacles requiring fine control perhaps harder than they should be.
Even late-game it's hard to shake the feeling that too many levels involve some degree of holding forward on straightaways, or some minor variation thereof. Other levels just feel too long, where one mistake on a late high-precision obstacle means having to replay earlier sections. The game also has the obnoxious habit of placing optional collectibles such that you have to drop down to grab them and thus subsequently repeat an earlier section. This could have been alleviated through things like checkpoints, one-way teleporters, or other stage elements to launch you back whence you came.
The bosses are janky and tedious. Either you're waiting too long to even have an opportunity to attack, or you're praying that upon striking a boss's weak point you don't awkwardly rebound to your doom... or both. Stage type variety can be nice in theory but the execution in this case falls flat.
The tails of cannons' guide lines lag behind the heads, which makes timing high-precision shots unnecessarily frustrating. There are also cases where you can fall perfectly in between two balloons, which just feels bad.
The inclusion of instant-death traps (e.g. spikes) in some levels seems odd. It's not something I ever felt Super Monkey Ball wrongfully omitted.
I do appreciate the manual camera control, though there doesn't seem to be any automatic camera to fall back on when not making use of it.
Squirrel Sphere certainly isn't the worst in the genre, but it's also far from the best in my opinion.
Squirrel sphere is Super Monkey Ball without training wheels. If you liked SMB or want a tight 3d platforming game, take a look at this one. It's imaginative and creative with levels and ramps up the challenge.
yes yes yes
cute Fun game that is challenging and def worth a couple bucks
I like it and maybe u will too
7.9 / 10
Great monkey ball type game. short, and easy at times, but fun! Final boss is HELL and i've never been able to beat it. either way, get it if you're interested.
I adore this game so much
This game cured my depression
For the price, you absolutely cannot go wrong with this game if you are a fan of Super Monkey Ball style games. It's a pretty simple, relatively short game, but it does a better job capturing the spirit of the first couple of Super Monkey Ball than the modern Super Monkey Ball games, like Banana Blitz (Note: Super Monkey Ball Retro or whatever the final name will be was not released at the time that I am reviewing this game). The stage designs are simple, but challenging and rely on precise movements and timing. The whole system of coins that unlock squirrel and ball accessories is really novel and adds to the game. The mini games are also tons of fun. Overall, I'd say the game is definitely worth giving a shot for fans of the genre.
very nice game but the multiplayer splitscreen is not really a multiplayer so if you had a friend that had this game and you try to play with them it wont work so can we have friend online playig this game in multiplayer and also having to mess around with the physics thanks and also i love this game
This is a game about rolling a ball through obstacle course levels where you can grab collectables and try to beat your time.
I booted up this game hopeful, thinking back to my days of childhood where I would play Hampster Ball for hours, replaying levels and messing around with the local co-op modes with a friend. Hampster Ball had a great feeling of weight, momentum, level design, and control that even as a kid, I was able to learn and perform the moves and techniques expected of the player. There was even a sense of control in the air, making the platforming so much more enjoyable.
This game, Squirrel Sphere, unfortunately does not have that level of control. For the 30ish minutes I played it, I noticed one very key thing about this game: there was no weight. The ball gains speed way too fast, is too light, too uncontrollable. In the first level I was already speeding uncontrollably, unable to get a grip on the controls and going to fast that one of the collectable acorns did not get collected despite going right through it. On a later level, I went so fast I clipped through the end door and flew off the stage. You're able to go to top speed in a few seconds of rolling, if even that. If this was a gam about speed, then sure, I'd think this may be okay. But this isn't a Sonic fangame, this game requires you to travel thin walkways with moving obstacles and instant death spikes. And that's not enjoyable when I can't control the speed of my own ball. Press the joy stick a little to much and I go flying off the stage. Can't even navigate to the special stuff hidden on the sides of the stage due to the lack of air control , you'd have to land perfectly and be able to adjust the incredibly fast speeds you're going, which just didn't seem possible.
Basically, no weight and poor control over ball, goes way too fast too quickly, game ended up not too enjoyable and turned me away from playing instead of pulling me in.
While i was hoping for something on par with marble blast ultra for the xbox 360, it's a little different from that. However, it was still a surpring amount of fun, at least until a kind of frustrating level in the second world.
All in all, i recommend this game. It was definitely more fun than i expected, and it's kind of super cute in a weird way, too.
It's no super monkey ball, but the inspiration is there, the difficulty too! I honestly really enjoyed playing it, finishing it 100%.
There's a really nice difficulty curve to the game, the extra modes are quite fun, and the music, sounds and graphics really goes well together.
Games like that are really rare, so for the amateur of games like Monkey Ball, this is the perfect game. There's some small camera issues, but I never had too much problem with it. Maybe in a couple of levels, but it never stopped me from finishing it.
Also, the last boss is way too hard compared to the rest of the game. Also way too long to beat compared to other bosses.
Found this looking for couch co-op games. It's surprisingly fun. The level of difficulty ranges from laughably easy to god damn, the smash mini-game is fun (though it took me about a half hour to complete the museum level), and there's a good amount of content for the price. The graphics are pretty basic, which usually would bug me but the idea and the mechanics completely make up for that. 5/7 overall.
a very very good squirrel game
super squirrel ball
super monkey ball but with better animal
wish there was online multiplayer and wish there were more levels but thats about it
The aesthetics and artstyle is really amazing! The controls are smooth and responsive so you'll have no issues with that. The soundtrack is spot on and fits very well.
Overall a cute and fun game if you're looking something similar to Super Monkey Ball. There is room for polishing this game for sure but you'll have no issues playing this game so give it a try!
A fun ball game where you roll through each level, collect acorns and items, and head for the goal post. One thing to note is that you can not move while in the air. Instead, your ball starts spinning, and you gain a burst of speed in whichever direction you were spinning in when you land. I'm not a huge fan of that, but if you like going for the fastest time, that can add a ton of depth.
It's a fun well made game and definitely worth the price...
~Side Note: The multiplayer in this game is for splitscreen mode and not actual online multiplayer... i personally don't mind that and prefer splitscreen over actual online multiplayer.
A great hommage to Super Monkey Ball. Awesome game for the price
