Crab Champions

This game is a BLAST! (pun intended). While it is still in Early Access as of this review, and there is a bug here and there, and maybe some balance issues, it is still one of my favorite games.

This is a very good game. Extremely smooth gameplay, deep rouguelike mechanics, and an amazing OST that hits all your emotions. Fans of the genre should not overlook this for a second. Crab.

Developer listens to feedback and is actively making improvements to the game. Pretty fun, give it a try sometime and make an unstoppable build.

This game is kinda of alright ig. Good weapon selection, enemy variety, cool weapon mods, different ways to play the same weapon, great level design, responsive movement, multiple levels of difficulty for all skill levels, and big content updates from the dev. So I guess the game is alright

TL;DR? EVOLVE TO CRAB! PINCH THE WORLD!!!

I love this game. The number of ways the game can get wacky, the variety of build types (status effect builds, multi-shot ricochet builds, melee builds, grenade builds...), all of the weapons, how UTTERLY RIDICULOUS some of the perk interactions are? Glorious.

"Hey, how's the run going?"
"Great! My sniper rifle fires FIFTEEN BULLETS that ricochet AND split AND home in! It also spawns buzzsaws when it hits things!"
"Sweet! I'm carrying 10 grenades that bounce (and explode on each bounce) and spawn 4 turrets on each explosion!"

Some of the achievements? Quite challenging, but the only times I didn't really have fun playing this are when I went for the 'no damage normal win' and the 'ultra chaos win.' (Well, the runs that succeeded on those were a lot of fun! And so were a lot of the ones that failed!)

This is an excellent fast paced shooter. I play most games at high difficulty, and this definitely satisfies with infinite replayability. Not to mention the music track and soothing map designs.

Weapons are super good and auto shotgun with EVERYTHING and i mean EVERYTHING on that gun will give you 10-12 loops on one life. Portals are good and the different types of chests there are very good to have with the weapons. Elemental update has a LOT of stuff that is super good and why i played this game for 5 hours.

I have recommended this game to a few people i know. love the playability. the constant work to make the game better. the way the dev pays attention to the player base. Great game

100%ed the game in 50 hours :D. True nightmare on every weapon took a solid 40 of those hours minimum and after all that time i thought may as well complete it fully, after weeks of going back and doing 1-3 complete true nightmare runs. Ill come back for new updates and to check out what builds are good or not. Crit is really strong but you need a stage 2 crit chance relic drop, driller i ignored the whole game until the end and found out at level 5 or so youll get like 3 items per level and is a million times easier to stack vs double vision/care package /performance bonus. Health is power is incredibly overpowered when combined with big hearts. Global damage is king and crit is a part of that global damage. Slow weapons are awful unless you sacrifice everything for fire rate mixed with added attacks on weapon shoot due to the higher proc chance. Oh and get the relic that makes one shop pedestal 75% off and on the rebuyable one hope for something damage ramping or a proc chance on shoot effect and gg. Oh and the jumping melees are a little broken with the relic that gives low gravity you can fly forever and can be used to get out of bounds with enough cooldown speed and some patience, the rocket jump relic does that too just use the arcane wand or rocket launcher or whatever and blow yourself up against the wall to climb it and the game will delete bosses and many other enemies (though not all like fire crabs) lol

This is a TON of fun. Mindless, extremely fun, Co-op. With crabs... Just need to listen to "Crab Rave" while playing it...

I mean... Beautiful graphics. Simple gameplay. Loads of skins, and weapons. And even more mods, to customize your own builds...

Very good roguelite. The normal mode isn't particularly difficult, although there are a plethora of additional difficulty modifiers you can apply, as well as a more standard "Nightmare mode" (that you can mix with the difficulty modifiers). Very fast paced.

Nothing better than completing 50+ islands and becoming completely broken. Very fun and challenging roguelike.

Game is really fun in the beginning, it has potential and tons of replayability with having to do 2 full loops with each weapon/ability/melee to rank them up. You also have multiple difficulties along with modifiers to increase difficulties to the "True" difficulty level ex: True Nightmare is Nightmare difficulty with ALL modifiers so you can play on an easy mode and have mindless fun or you can test your skills and put it on harder difficulties with modifiers. With that said as a solo-player who has spent most of their time playing True Nightmare and True Ultra Chaos (the final difficulty unlocked after reaching Diamond rank with all the weapons),

Recent changes from the 'Elemental Update' have made the game just entirely boring to play "crystals" the in-game currency harder to obtain by reducing how much drops, "Is Power" mod group is 'the meta' as stacking health or speed along with their "Is Power" mods make you practically invincible as the max health in the game is ~4.2 billion health, and is very easily obtainable early on with the right RNG; Which brings me to the RNG in the game currently... You are constantly at the hands of RNG from the types of Mods/Perks you are going to get at the end of and Island, the types of enemies an island will spawn (I have had multiple times where only 1 type of enemy will spawn but they will have large area spamming abilities that create a wall that makes it impossible to dodge or parry)..

The fact that the "Key Totem" in the lobby which is used to unlock new weapons/abilities/grenades OR allows a player to grab a perk before entering a run is limited to 1 key PER lobby, meaning you have to leave your lobby if you want to use multiple keys (This only works in a multiplayer setting where you join a host use your key pick up and drop your item away from the totem then rejoin the game allowing you to use more keys while "stacking" abilities off to the side) This method still locks the host behind 1 key but anyone that joins the host can use multiple keys. On top of this you only obtain keys after clearing a set of island and getting passed the Elite or Boss Island at the end of each section and for the first 2 loops only (clearing all 4 biomes or ~54 Islands) this leads to a LARGE amount of unusable keys for solo-players. Why is the one and only way to get stronger before entering a run locked in a game that is meant to make the player felt broken and overpowered. I would understand if there was some sort of weapon scaling outside of perks and mods BUT there isn't a Bronze ranked Arcane Wand and a Diamond ranked Arcane Wand do the same damage. So for players that WANT to test their skills and play on True Ultra Chaos get shafted and have the "I feel like Im running into a brick wall" and the experience becomes miserable.

Current Major Cons of the game:
-The locked Key totem ( THIS NEEDS TO GET CHANGED IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE TO HAVE THIS LOCKED)
-Recent update created massive imbalance of crystals (Modifiers ALREADY double shop prices and lock perk/mod slots the are then required to buy) You spend most of your loops wasting money buying slots that most of the time your not even stopping at the shop because you can't actually buy anything or do anything but quickly heal and break any rocks in the area
- Massive Imbalance when playing on "True Ultra Chaos" that makes the game completely un-enjoyable and feels like a giant waste of time to unlock and play. Its only 'unique' spins are that Elites/Bosses can spawn on ANY island, Enemies can jump, you get a 500% boost to loot drops in chests (which actually isn't that decent AT ALL), AND it removes automatic crystal collection which just goes back to the Imbalance of crystal gains when you crystals are disappearing just before you can pick them up.

(EDIT: I know it says i only have about 18 hours in game. But I usually play splitscreen using Nucleus Co-op which doesn't count the hours. I have well over 100 hours in split screen Crab Champions)
It's ridiculous how fun this game is. If you enjoyed games such as Risk of Rain 2, Vampire Survivors, or hell even if you don't *usually* enjoy these types of games, just give it a shot.

The amount of different builds you can craft, the amount of weapons, the amount of weapon mods, grenade mods, melee mods, elemental mods, money mods, are staggering and guarantee you can get a different build each time you play (or not if you find one that you enjoy).

The many enemy types are fun to mess around with and learn how to dodge/defeat them, the different biome themes are all very nicely crafted, and the MUSIC *chefs kiss* . You can tell there has been, and will continue to be, a lot of love put into this game. It has become one of my favorite games and if you choose to try it I guarantee it'll become one of yours too.

In conclusion: LOTS of pretty much everything that you'd ever need in a wave shooter like this, all crafted with love by the guy who made Crab Rave. It's ridiculous, silly, engaging, and most of all just plain fun. If you have even a passing interest in the game, please give it a shot.

great game honestly, but the only thing I find really annoying is getting 3 elite crabs in a very small arena( Mostly just my terrible luck.)

Roguelike, great combat mechanics and movement, loadout options and CRABS. What's not to love??

By far one of the greatest rouge like games of modern time! A beautifully simple, yet highly addictive third person shooter packed with tons of charm. bonus points for having a perfectly crafted movement system. 11/10!

If you asked me to recommend this when I started playing a couple years ago, I'm not sure I would have said yes. But the constant updates and support have turned this into a fanstastic game with tons of replay value. Definitely more fun with friends, so you can find a zany new build that destroys enemies in fun new ways.

I love this game. Especially the parts where you can completely break it, deal several million damage per hit, fly, escape the bounds of reality, and accidentally kill your friends. All on the hardest difficulty.

100% would recommend.

P.S. Pickaxe is the best ranged weapon.

Incredibly fun movement-based arena shooter, easily made over-powered and lemme tell ya that stacking what seems like overkill is totally necessary and fun as all heck! My only issue is that it can be laggy at higher levels of play. I have a 7900XTX/5800X3D AMD system and I barely get 40 fps after about island level 175. But if you're not planning to do infinite runs, it's perfect for any crustacean enthusiast!

We all return to crabs eventually.
I have been playing this game pretty much since day 1.
I love it.
Fast paced and fresh with great music and fun quirks to each run.

5/10. I have fun about half of the time I play this game. The other half is just a grind. A good run is very enjoyable. During a good run the game will offer useful upgrades and drops. A bad run will (repeatedly) offer nothing but useless junk causing a very tedious experience. You are basically at the mercy of random luck. It would be great if the player had more control over which drops/upgrades would appear on a run. If the player could exclude drops/upgrades that the player will never use, it would make for more enjoyable runs.

Highly optimized game. Runs smooth as butter. Movement and aiming feels amazing. The depth is a cherry on top. Would like to see teams PvP some day, more biomes and many different bosses but it is a great game as it is either way.

I bought Crab Champions on release because of the Crab Rave song and I always treated it as a meme game.

But the developer has put in some serious work by constantly adding new weapons, abilities, enemies, level variety, and expanding the soundtrack.

The game keeps getting better and I think Crab Champions is now one of the best co-op roguelike on Steam.

Update 9 (September 1, 2024) is my favorite update so far, it added so much content variety and the game play is really fun and challenging for me.

Two suggestions to the developer
1) Get rid of the non aquatic enemies like skulls and pumpkins so the game has a nice aquatic theme
2) Add a Maryland USA state flag skin

About 100 hours in this game, have been having a blast with it ... Until the "final patch" was released containing a ton of nerfs and making the game overall a whole lot worse.
If anything; the earlier waves should be made a bit more easy, and some essential upgrades should be made available to get without depending 100% on RNG. But they went the opposite direction catering for a small elite group of hardcore players.
So they basically ruined the thing that made it fun for the casual player to enjoy.

338 hours should let you know how I feel about this game :)
At a time when I was quite jaded on gaming, not feeling inspired to play any of the new releases or AAA titles, Crab was there,
And Crab was good.
One of the most addictive and satisfying games I've played in a while, crazy replayability and it scratches the shooty loot power fantasy oh so hard!

Simple and engaging. The entire game has the right mixture of relaxation and challenge. The controls are extremely tight and the roguelike progression is well balanced, and has enough diversity that I can return to have a familiar yet fresh experience each time. If you enjoy rogeulikes or third person shooters in any capacity, I would easily recommend this game
