I do not recommend playing this game. First off, this is a pure walking simulator (there is no challenge or difficulty in this game), so that is already bringing the marks down somewhat, but walking simulators can be interesting, they just have to excel in the story department or the way they integrate the story into the gameplay. This game does neither.
The gameplay basically never interacts with the story and it's all just 'walk here and press the button to read'. And the story has the gall not only to be boring and uninteresting, it throws a "this is real life, not every story will be interesting and have satisfying endings" in your face like it's some profound epiphany you're supposed to examine and think "yeah stories can be boring". No, stories cannot be boring if you expect people to purchase and enjoy your media product. Your uncle's story about his favorite fence can be boring, but I ain't paying him a tenner to tell me that story.
The few twists the game has are entirely predictable and don't amount to anything in the end. It is a half-baked half-story with half-answers to half-questions (which will never be answered because obviously nobody's going to make a sequel).
The one RTG I missed out on. Finally finished in 2024. Game is a scenic tourism of a village in Norway. Lovely characters on the journey though I feel the mystery is a tad underbaked. Worth a play especially after finishing a long ass rpg.
It looks good, but it is just not worth playing. A visual novel with a very uninspired story that fails to surprise even a little bit. It tries and fails so hard.
Selecting do not recommend here feels pretty harsh. I do recommend it if the premise seems interesting, however, I wouldn't suggest it to someone who isnt an avid fan of walking sims in the same vein as firewatch, and edith finch. And unfortunately, I don't think it stand as an equal amongst its peers.
Setting-wise this game rules. Really pretty and some nice music too. I think the story is fine, although it has some unecessary bumps around the climax that feel a bit forced. It seems to me that this game purposefully left questions unanswered to set up for sequels (this is all but confirmed in the credits). Which ultimately leaves for a sort of unsatisfying ending.
Its okay I think.
4.5/10
Good written casual adventure, ideal for an evening. Thank you!
Having played Dustborn and The Longest Journey/Dreamfall (two games/game series I love) from the same creators, my only expectation was that Draugen would probably be worth the time and money - I was not disappointed.
As in these other games, I appreciated the carefully crafted experience. Everything is so well done, the music, the setting, the plot, the graphics, the characters. Did I mention the music? I think I did, but it's so good that it deserves being mentioned twice.
I feel slightly less enthusiastic about Draugen than about the other games. Not because Draugen did anything wrong, but it does have a different feel, intimate and intense instead of complex, chaotic, and epic. It does have its intricacies, but it's a stark contrast to the beautiful crazy mess of Dustborn, the epicness of TLJ/Dreamfall, and the multi-layered deep exploration of multiple fundamental themes of both.
It does have one big theme that it explores, and that one, it explores well.
Draugen
Positives:
+ Made in Norway
+ A beautiful place to explore
+ Nicely designed
+ Atmospheric
+ The mystery
+ Lissie is a nice "side-kick"
+ Good voiceacting
+ Nice storytelling
+ Good sounds and music
+ Achievements
+ Timely
+ Good colouring
+ Relaxing
+ Emotional ending
Negatives:
- Head-bob that cant be disabled
- Very low FOV that cant be changed
- Dull contrast
- The graphics are just acceptable
- You cant explore everywhere you want (theres a lot of locked buildings)
- There could have been done so much more to the story and generally more content
- Its very short (over in about 3 hours)
If you like walking simulations with a lot of soul and a mysterious touch to it, look no further.
This atmospheric game has a lot to offer. Too bad its so short, and that you cant change the FOV (some will get the feeling of headache/nausea because of this). But for everyone else, get ready for an interesting exploration in Graavik.
Highly reccommended!
Total Score: 8/10
Draugen is an enjoyable little game that can be completed in a few hours. I think it was well worth the time spent and if you can get it on sale, it is well worth the money spent. There aren't any puzzles in this game, and I'm okay with that. And there are no convoluted expectations. Well, except for one time, early in the game, when you go outside on a dark foggy night. You’re obviously searching for something, but it’s unclear what you’re trying to find or why you’re out there. I almost quit the game during that sequence because if there’s anything I hate in a walking sim, it’s wandering aimlessly in dark and/or foggy conditions where I can barely see where I’m headed and it feels like you’re going in circles. I was afraid this was going to be a regular thing in the game, but fortunately, that wasn’t the case. Eventually, I figured out where I was going and where I was supposed to be. I'm glad I kept going and didn't quit because the rest of the game was much clearer and easier to navigate. To be fair, that seemingly aimless wandering in the dark was the only real annoyance, for me anyway. For most of the game, you know what you have to do and why. The only uncertainty is where the story is going, but that's a good thing. You learn little details along the way and the story progresses to a decent ending.
The game is quite linear, and I like that. I like structure. It was an interesting little adventure with a good story and pretty scenery. It takes place in the early 20th century in a little seaside village in the Nordic countryside. You play as Edward, the main protagonist. However, Edward has a little sidekick named Alice, aka "Lissie." Lissie is a teenage girl, and I'm not sure if the story ever really explains the relationship between Lissie and Edward (she's neither family, nor his lover), but I've seen several reviews from people who found her character very annoying. I read someone describing her as the "worst sidekick in gaming history," lol. I didn't really feel that way. Yes, it’s true, the girl does have a sharp tongue. She's very critical and opinionated, and she can be downright abusive with her mouth, but she provided dialog that helped keep the pace of the story going and at times I even found the dialog amusing. The only thing that seemed a bit out of place for that period (1923 to be exact), however, is the way Lissie speaks and the language she uses. She's supposed to be a young woman (or older teenage girl) living in the early 20th century, but she sounds more like a smart-ass mean girl straight outta the 21st century.
So I played Dustborn first, in which I wasn't really a big fan of personally, but I played this game, and good news, I liked it quite a bit more, although it isn't exactly perfect.
I think this is a perfectly fine game. It's not amazing, but its certainly worth your time for a narrative driven game.
For starters, this game has a focus on three main parts, Betty, your own character in relation to other characters, and the mystery. That is literally it. It is admittedly pretty dry with its delivery of its story, but I felt that despite it taking quite a while before I had gotten invested in the story, I felt that it did carry my interests until the very end. I greatly prefer this type of storytelling compared to just, trying to do everything at once with equal importance, simply scattered all over the place in a messy manner.
I really like the approach to this story a lot more. This isn't a "we are telling you exactly what happened" or "we're just going to be vague about this just for the sake of it" or "you see this? You have to believe it or not believe it." This is a game in which you essentially create your own interpretation of events and your own interpretation of what exactly happens to your own character or characters within the story, and its a really cool way to tell a unique story that, has its foundations within Norwegian folk lore while as to not simply copy and paste the actual mythology. To create its own unique story, while having these elements elevate and improve the overall experience as you will. I also feel that this perfectly fits the whole "being led on by a red thread" story telling that encompasses the studio's style.
I think another aspect of this game that I just liked a lot better was the way that the quote on quote "unlikable" was handled here when it came to characters. In this game, the characters are all still pretty much likable in their own ways, and they also have their own flaws, in their own ways, but you get to see and experience these characters, as you find out what happens in the story, actually try to address their own flaws head on, have actual importance in the plot, rather than simply ignore them or overly praise the characters just for the sake of being told "the characters are likable" even if that isn't necessarily the case. I think the other aspect of this is that this is definitely a mature and serious story, which again can at times make the game feel a bit too dry, but I think that it was for the better.
The soundtrack, perfectly fits the game. The soundtrack, is actually really good, one of the best parts about the game for sure. Not only does it really fit the overall setting and time period, but it also gives off that "mystical, mythological, mysterious" vibe that it should, while still having the diversity and creation of atmosphere and ambiance that aided the overall experience. It is really well done.
Graphically speaking, also a lot better, although this is where the flaws of the game start to show.
I almost wished that with its black and white mode, I wonder what this game would of looked like if it were to be graphically designed to be either just black and white or perhaps black and white within a slight tint of color, or perhaps a select color type of look. I feel like even though the game looks decent, I just felt like at times when switching between the two different modes, I felt like something in between the two modes would of been best and really make the game stand out with its visuals a lot more. Perhaps a neutral color type of look? I don't know, just something that makes the best of both worlds.
Speaking of which, level design. Much like with their other games so far, it's still not great, too linear, barely anything to explore, and when you find something, yes it's still better, but its only really story specific information and that's it, nothing else. It's interesting, but there really isn't anymore established world building here besides from the main story, which again is just the creative style of this game much like their other games. This game would of benefited massively from more lore within the game. This time, there is an even more interesting world here to do that with, but that isn't the case. You get the plot, and that's it.
The other aspect is the run time. Yes, it's not too long, but this to me feels too short and in the opposite direction. I feel like this game could of been much longer than it was, perhaps two or three times the length. About 3 hours? That is way too short.
I feel like this is also reflective in the points when the story didn't provide enough context in certain important aspects of the plot. It's not that it didn't make sense in these instances, it just needs more time to develop, more time to learn additional clues and details, more time to build up tension, etc...
Still, this was really cool to play, and I greatly enjoyed it, and it makes me want to play their other games. I am going to give this game a 7/10.
Nice, short and very scenic story based mystery game with great ambience
Out and out a walking simulator and a pretty good one. You are pretty much led by the game (and the girl) on how to proceed and there are no puzzles to solve. There's no action, there are elements of psychological horror. The story is a bit disjointed, but nonetheless this was a good three and a half hours for me. This is a poor PC port though, and you only save at checkpoints.
A cool little atmospheric game. Short, cinematic, but not really too deep. The twist is fairly evident, though it plays out well enough. My only real gripe would be that there is no conclusive ending to the story within the story...
Pleasing to look at but dreadfully paced and written. Advertised as a mystery, Draugen is closer to acting as a rubber stamp of approval over the lines of two characters (both insufferably-written) in an almost incoherent predetermined story. Disappointing is one word I'd use, short is another. Still, some enjoyment can be found knowing that this is the second game I've found with a dedicated "press button to call Ethan" mechanic. Don't bother with this one even on sale, a shame since international collaborations should always be celebrated.
Good Game
Really fantastic story, would recommend to anyone.
This was a rather short game i played a few years ago by now. To be frank, it isn't really worth the price and just barely, the time.
Why? Go figure, i am Norwegian and from an aesthetic perspective? The game is neat, nice, it looks pretty good.
But the story is rather meager, starved even. There's something missing and i believe it's a product of the scope of the project. There's nothing extra, nothing spicy or cool. Nothing shocking to see or to have you get gripped by, from a story perspective. The name itself of the game is thus mostly misleading. Even moreso to me, someone that know of the lore and whatnot.
Thus, i'll give the game a 4/10 to a norwegian. If you are a north'aboo (not a westaboo or a weaboo), maybe it'd be a 6/10 to you? Again it plays nice, looks nice, it's well made. Short though, just an empty mystery that's cut off rather quickly.
I am pretty sure the game would do far better today if it was released with a larger scope in mind. And an actual draug/draguen to stirr up some light drama, action, horror, or..... really ANYTHING than just ending the game?!
Actually, i am gonna downgrade it to a 3/10 since i know that you learn more cool lore from reading translated wikipedia than this game. But i am biased since this is related to my country so there's that. Otherwise a well made game.
Lovely walking sim, wish there was more!
What an incredible journey. The game's put together in a way that the story unfolds organically while set in a beautiful, abandoned town. I can see why it won Norwegian GOTY 2019 the work that went into it was meticulously thought out including the soundtrack. Seeing at the end of the credits that Edward & Alice will return has me wondering where they will go next. I highly recommend the game.
I was left speechless (in a bad way).
Interesting story which is the main part of this game. It is a bit short, so would be better if it had longer story line.
