What to say, i was randomly looking at some old videos and all of a sudden i remembered the soundtrack of this game and i started thinking about the insane 4/5 days spent trying to solve it. Me and 2 friends tryed so hard while i was streaming the process and i have some really good memories of that, from cheat engine to using an arduino to recreate some key sequences, trying outside for 5 hours straight and having 100 viewers on twitch (when i stream i normally get 2 Kappa). Everyone in chat trying to suggest or find solutions to strange enigmas, even on some discord servers created just to have people to think together. It's been short but an amazing community experience and that's it, i just wanted to share this.
The game is quite enjoyable in the fact that it will genuinely get your brain working. Like many others have said, the game itself is quite basic and consists of a seemigly endless maze; if you can traverse it, you'll come to find that there are "puzzle rooms" each of which provide a word which presumably is the key to the bitcoin.
One thing that I would note is this game is not your average "Puzzle game" and it requires some serious thought to be put in to it. There are instances where you'll be required to use software external to the game to solve a puzzle, times when you might be required to work in a team and even instances where you have to make a modification to your own system in order to solve something.
Overall the game is enjoyable and I appload the developer(s), however if you are not someone who can sit there and solve puzzles, repeat something countless times or even have some basic understanding or adeptness to systematic approaches for problems... This game is not for you.
People Aren't fairly reviewing this game. This game is not for the faint of mind. You ned to be VERY intellegent to complete and understand the majority of the enigmas. While some puzzles are easily defeated, they are not to be brute forced. You WILL require a vast understanding of how a game's PAK files, binaries, and coding work. You will NOT solve this game just by walking through the maze and guessing what it could be. After you receive all words, you must find a way to put them in PERFECT order. Again, you will not do this by yourself. You will need much assistance. I recommend this game for anyone who wants a REAL challenge. Good hunting.
Extremely difficult. People are saying the puzzles are easy but the labyrinth is hard, they're wrong. A lot of the riddles and puzzles make absoluetely no sense and require external sources to be able to crack them. The maze is terribly difficult, but not hard enough to where if you can't find you're way around you're retarded. I've mapped out about 1/5 of the maze and when you look at it on paper, it makes way more sense.
People who leave a negative review are only mad because they can't win the 1 bitcoin, which it of course should be insanely difficult to win 10 grand. Not easy.
First things first, if you expect MonteCrypto to be a normal game, leave it be, it probably won't be for you. MonteCrypto is best to be considered a bit of a meta game. Something that is meant to be played outside of the usual constraints of a game.
Clues can be found on Github, parts on Twitter. Clues and solutions are in the game files which you have to extract or take apart by other means. Sometimes you literally have to break the game and it is meant to be played that way.
If you look for something with a guided story, something that is focused on logic puzzles, something you can play alone on an otherwise boring evening and also looks visually appealing: THIS is not what you want to play. Try the Witness maybe, a great game I'd totally recommend.
MonteCrypto is more of a purpose bound experiment with a 10k bounty on a first come first serve basis. It's best played in a group of like-minded people (check Game Detectives if you look for one). There is some kind of story frame around the whole experience but you have to explore to find all the little bits and pieces. In the end it will come down to one person getting the bitcoin. Most people will leave at that point, some will stay and try to figure out the story. Others will try on their own for the challenge.
Is it worth the ~1-2 USD? Idk. If some of the above sounded appealing, then it will very likely be. Otherwise, there are plenty of good puzzlers out there.
Regarding the people calling it a scam, I doubt it. It's certainly not mining bitcoin in the background as many of the scam shoutouts suggest. There is no network traffic that would match a mining client and without constant network communication, you can't be mining.
One tip to those of you still trying to run the maze legitimately... The game expects you to cheat, so don't feel bad for it.
***PSA
The guys who have said this is nothing but a maze simulator are wrong. The game's maze is static and has been COMPLETELY fleshed out by multiple people. Step-by-step guides and also top down mapping are complete, so traversing the maze is now a part, but not as substantial as before.
A couple of the puzzles are disgustingly easy but the vast majority are insanely hard. I believe this is probably the hardest puzzle game to date. If you want a mind bending challenge that you will fail miserably at.... give this game a shot.
You could also join in the discords and become a part of the community that's really trying to tear this game apart. Look at my hours, its not a bitcoin miner, and its not just a maze game. There are 24 puzzles that are clear as night and day. The people who complained about the maze are people who played for 10 minutes.
Isn't it weird that a game related to bitcoins keeps your GPU at 90% even when (minimized) and is so cheap? Basically, it is a really bad game created only to scam you into using your GPU to mine bitcoins.
The "puzzles" I have run into are not impossible by any stretch but they are not inventive or fun or creative either. It's like the game is made to frustrate rather than challenge and the maze like approach is not a clever design choice but rather the complete opposite. The game feels like it was made by one person with primitive technology and game design choices. I have not found the game to be fun or redeeming in any fashion and even a cash prize does not compel me to play for another second. Don't waste the small amount of money this game costs or the time you can spend on much better games.
MonteCrypto is a different game.
You solve puzzles and the first person to solve all 24 wins a bitcoin. Easy enough?
Not really. This game is a lot harder than what all the negative views suggest it as. The 24 enigmas in this game are some of the most troubling puzzles to solve. They depend on you to know outside information as well as information encoded within files or encoding within the real world. The game not only wants you to solve 24 enigmas but adventure yourself through a seemingly never ending maze.
The game itself was advertised to not show a maze but Im more glad they added one as this game would already been beat without it.
Ignore all the Negative reviews saying this game is too easy and the Enigmas are laughable, Some are but they are the easy ones used to introduce players to the game and aswell as the other 18 yet to be solved they are quite troubling.
I advise you to play this game not only to win money but to challenge yourself and see what you can do with other people.
TL;DR Its a fun game waste the $2
Normally i would never write a review, but i can´t surpress the need to point this one out!
Necessary steps for this game:
- Buy game
- Get into the worst possible maze after 5 minutes ingame
- Laugh about the stupid "not that way" - shit
- Get annoyed about the stupid "not that way" - shit
- Get lost in the maze
- Uninstall and refund instantly
[*] Feel satisfied that u did not even gave them 1,99
Worst game I have ever imagined could exist. Glitches and typos every 3 steps, profanity, swears and hate messages covering the walls, a map that is an insult to whoever hopes to use it in that it only shows the places you have been in the past hour since it last reset. Doesn't tell you where you are or even cover the entire maze. Questions like poorly copied riddles(can't even copy a riddle without having typos??) and questions like "whats 1+1" make it obvious that this game was rushed to cash in on bitcoin profits. Hours of resetting and wandering around hitting dead ends. Hugged the walls for TWO hours straight, didn't even cover half the wall and only got 3 enigmas after hours of playing that were near the beginning. one required you to translate 112 characters of binary to isizulu and then to english. It is clear that this game was a joke that was marketed very well. Many users left death threats and wished cancer to the creators, and if you get the game, you will see why.
NOT a puzzle/enigma game!!! walked through boring ass maze for over an hour and half without encountering one puzzle. Finally went through a door into. . . a giant jungle where i roamed endlessly for the last 25 minutes before timer reset and i started over. Map tracing is horrible, does not tell you where you are, once you walk off boundry there is no more mapping. Other users can post messages on boards that block the path in tight corridors. THIS IS NOT A PUZZLE GAME. This is wonder around endlessly through maze with NO map, no way to track progress game. Whichever person, or group gets the bitcoin they deserve it. I would honetsly rather go to work for the money, and probably be less hours too.
developers are going to make 10 times more than just 1 bitcoin
nobody will win the prize becuse It's ridiculously hard and it's not even a little bit fun!
you are lose money, time, and your mind...
It does not have any puzzle mechanism, just maze exploration. Objective is to find the 24 word seed which will let you crack the key to the wallet hodling 1 BTC. You get one hour before the game and map resets to your starting position. The pattern of the mazes seems to remain the same. There are portions of maze that are out of bounds and not displayed on the map. And that annoying house elf thing is only there to help you to "NOT THAT WAY". I have found at least 7 bizarre locations so far. I hate that blue void.
feels like scam :D no effort on the game it wasnt buzzle it was just annoying maze with goblin in it. game asked for firewall acces not steam games normally even do that and it left running when i quitted playing it noticed it because tried to uninstall it so it maybe lending calculating power for mining . (buy 1e game for bitcoin x 1000 its like money... for nothing) DONT BUY
This game would've been playable if the map worked. The puzzles were alright i guess but I wasn't a big fan of the quiz doors. When I had used 90 minutes on 3 enigmas (maybe 15 minutes on the puzzles themselves) I realized this game wasn't worth playing cause it was not fun. Gz to the one who is bored enough to go through all 24 of them and gets the bitcoin. Looks were good, sounded good when there was music and I guess the marketing was great. Would I recommend? Hell no. 3/10 tops
NOT THAT WAY!
pls kill me
everytime i quit i have to restart steam because it says you are still in the game and can´t start it therefore FUCK OFF
Devs will hopefully suffer one day
Definition of ANTIFUN
Skipped one day at work to play it, but working would hae been more fun and rewarding
Extreme boring game. Just a maze simulator. Creators didn't put effort in, clearly just having the prize compensate for quality. There's even a room that legitimately could cause a seizure and you have to be in it for several minutes.
I am going to leave my refund explanation right here because I think it describes best what this game is and why it's probably one of the worst products available on Steam:
The game was advertised as extremely difficult. Hence I bought it to challange my mind. However, the difficulty presented does not lie in the puzzles which are laughably easy but rather in the one hour time limit to navigate a fifty-by-fifty-miles maze that sports repeating features ad nauseam. Even at top speed one cannot hope to acomplish to scour even the tiniest part of it. The map feature resets after every hour and the maze doesn't even fit the map in the slightest. The "enigmas" are wishy-washy blabbering with more interpretations than people wander the Earth. Actual puzzles are absent. The maze has a few doors which ask trivial questions and the enigma rooms just have a panel of unindicative scrolling text which disguises itself as clever prose but in reality is blabbering about nothing. It speaks volumes when the height of entertainment in a game is a screen glitching effect after picking up a pocket watch.
The images on the Steam sale page seem to display a rich and diverse environment. The game's actuality is different. These images were taken from a few key locations while the bulk of the product consists of the most boring set of corridors in the history of professional design. This is highly misleading.
This game tries to cash in on the Bitcoin trend by promising a Bitcoin for the first person to complete it. This, however, is nothing but a carrot-on-a-stick made to lead people into buying this atrocious nothingness of a game. It's reflecting badly upon Valve to support such a shady business and I highly recommend to cease supporting and selling it. This product isn't downright illegal but it's ethically questionable. "It's just a social experiment" isn't an excuse for baiting people into paying for this garbage. "But you get a Bitcoin if you finish first" isn't an excuse for it either.
In conclusion, I refund this game because of the following:
~ Boring and bad design makes this game a bore to play (It's not fun)
~ The screenshots and video provided do not reflect the actual product (The game didn't match the videos and screenshots)
This is less about puzzling and more about a big terrible maze. I got to this one part where the puzzle was just an invisible platforming challenge, and it was then that I noticed the game had a timer.. I spent a half hour in there and the timer ran out and sent me back to the beginning.
You get a map that draws itself out when you go through the maze but it has no pointer to tell you where on it that you are.
It's no fun,, I would compete for the prize if it was at least a little enjoyable but it just isn't.
So no, you can't pay me 11,849 dollars and 80 cents to play this.
This game is not about knowledge or logic but only about luck (if you find the good way)... waste of time. I will even refund 1,19.
After the labyrinth I found a room with 4 doors but whereever you go it will be the same room. So these are not real puzzles (you need to find out by trying combinations not thinking).
If somebody wants to know what is real puzzle game try The Room. You will see the difference.
+ If you check achievements you can figure out easily this game is probably very very long to finish... I bet if you would work for that time in real life until you could finish the game probably you could earn the same money. Also there is a line in the game what says you don't need speed but stamina = you need to waste your time here to achieve something...
