It can take you from New York to South Africa. It can take you from the year 1804 to the year 2000. It can take you from penniless manual laborer to powerful multi-millionaire.
It can take you from a normal, well-adjusted, well-rounded person to an obsessed, singled-minded, one-tracked train head. This is a real railroad game, not just a strategy game that happens to involve railroads. If you want to hop on a plane, car or ship, hop on another game.
This game is about trains for people who love trains. Everything about the game is centered around an authentic look and feeling of the railways. Period video and pictures are interlaced with the game. The design and interface are true to the character of the fabled late 1800's railroads. A.I. opponents are based on real people. And all maps are real (based on satellite photography from US Geological Service and other sources).

Challenging
Fun relaxing game, each skill level adds more to game. Trains are pretty detailed . Lots of locations, might even help you with an area your curious about around the world. And you don't have to pay extra for the many maps.
Ridiculously detailed, fun and large game both for it's time and even now.
hey played this game for 1 hour.
bought this game as i had it on a physical copy of it.
the game itself it very hard in my opinion but if you get in it it might be fun
So many different scenerios time periods and trains to choose from. It allows you to lay individual pieces of track. The artwork and graphics are superb. Just alot of fun.
Excellent economics, strategy does seriously affect the outcome. Track building is much easier than most train games, graphics are not 3D and modern, but are great in 99% of circumstances. I feel this game should be used for business students. It also does not have an immense learning curve like a lot of strategy games, but to play well.....
I used to own this game back when it was released and stopped playing it since Railroad Tycoon 3 was released but now since I found it on steam I can now enjoy the game like I used to when it was first released.
Great older simulation
Fun Game
If you have difficulty getting the game to start reduce screen resolution significantly. I use 1024x768.
This is a pretty old game but i found it quite enjoyable. It's confusing at first so if you plan on playing it, watch a tutorial or check a guide online.
I choo choo choose to recommend this great game if you love trains and train accessories.
Its a solid, reliable, fun, playable game. I played it to completion when it was new, and I bought it recently to play again, and its still great.
good nostalgic game
A good, stable game, works fine in Windows 10
Had this game back on the CD-ROM days and it holds up surprisingly well today. Still a fun game to play, with the main 'railroad building' part continuing to be quite fun.
Perhaps all these years later, I'll finally figure out how to make money with the stock market though...
Why don't you own this yet? One of the best classic tycoon games ever!!!
Great fun without being fast paced or intense
an old one but a good one. There isn't much of a tutorial so new players may struggle, but once you get the hang of it, it is a really fun game
I still don't know how the stock market system works, but stuff happens.
Anyone know any other good railroad business simulators?
Game Is pretty sweet! Build railroads across north america, pretty self explanatory. Fun game, sometimes the track laying is a little bit buggy but overall its a cool historical game.
One of the best games of all time. It's so simple yet so brilliant. Move items X to A city. City A makes Y items. Move Y from city A to city B. City B has a building that uses Y to makes items Z. Move Z back to city A. Then use the profits to buy all of the buildings in the entire process. Continue expanding until you have a virtual monopoly and start buying out competitors. Eventually, you'll grow so big and get so rich, you can break the law without repercussion, buy elections, become president, and even dismantle democracies using the same laws meant to protect them! It's the perfect capitalist simulator!
Hey, wait a second...
Okay, maybe I got carried away there, but still, it's a great game.
Dont buy this.
Crashes when I open it 90+% of the time
I've played this game over the years. I have the original CD's too, Great game! Many hours invested. I wish they had just improved Railroad Tycoon II instead of developing RT III. The graphics and gameplay in RT III do not give me the same thrill. Alas I'm not sure why Railroad Tycoon II has so many mean comments, totally uncalled for. The investors are always "utterly fed up with me the Chairman" ? Well, back at ya. Even if it's a real life genuine response to a Chairman it's not needed in a "Game". (That and many more insults when you don't complete the incredibly hard tasks in an impossibly short time). Also I'm not sure why the years pass so fast. In the game it literally takes a train over 1 month to travel half a mile. Silly really, but that's why I say improvements were needed. As far as finding a game that simulates a train set, this is the best. Although it's not perfect, I've never seen another game as good as Railroad Tycoon II. Thanks to everyone posting tips, I'm still learning! The only tip I can think of is when you start you don't have much money to lay track. You can put two small stations in 1 "big" city that don't overlap and start generating cash easily. Also if you use Logs to Lumber that always pays well when starting.

Classic and relaxing
Got this game a while back to enjoy the nostalgia with my dad that we had for this game. Do not let the retro graphics fool you, this game has quite the depth when it comes to running your company ( if you wish, you can also tone down the difficulty by simplifying the mechanics when you start a scenario). Some aspects include the Stock market, your personal wealth, buying other stocks, bonds, margins, dividends, investors, buying businesses on the map. Oh and of course, supply and demand.
This game despite being 27 years old holds up very well today, and can teach you a thing or two about finances and the market. Great soundtrack too and even has old vintage clips of the old railroad industry, along with old vintage clips/gifs that play in your little icon box when you click on a button to do something like build more tracks or purchase trains.
great classic
I like trains.
I like this game, I lean towards older style "god games".
Still a well-playable classic.
Awesome!
easy to play and to understand the game
Not at all perfect, but it's the best game to date to build classic American railroads. Editor tool lets you customize so much, and there are so many good maps. It just seems to be better informed about rail economics and the history than the other games. Railway Empire made efforts to be more playable, but I have returned to Tycoon 2.
Great game
I am surprised this works on my computer, but RT3 does not work. Thow back to when I had a working hard copy of this game on CD.
Classic economic railroad game. Run a railroad, buy industries, sell stock, enrich yourself. Fun stuff.
Always loved this game, even in the CD era. It's fun when it works!
Annoying at times on Win10pro launch of the game. Black screen on occasion, requiring ctrl+alt+del "log out" as the only way to regain control of you pc. It also messes with your desktop taskbar.
I do hate Steams interaction with my computer. Wish they would just butt out and let me play the game without them. (no, offline does not work)
absolute banger of a game that holds up to this day <3 idk about the multiplayer i could not get that figured out in our modern era to save my life
I enjoy playing Rail Road Tycoon over the years. I , at one time also enjoyed putting together a railroad track and building on a 4 x 8 piece if plywood.
This game is highly addictive; mostly historically accurate; satisfying and demanding
Ive loved this game since the late 90's, glad it works on Windows 10
Fun game!
A nice old school tycoon game.
I would LOVE for 2K to remaster this graphically. The game is amazing! Even 25 years after release.
This is a game I just keep on coming back to, a few days or weeks here or there, put it away again, then the same again the next year, it never gets old. One of the first games I played, back in 1998. I loved it them and I love it now. Yes, it's old, but it stands the test of time if you aren't a graphics obsessive. The depth in the game is amazing for how old it is. There are some bugs, of course, and some glaring omissions (no tunnels), but they don't stop you enjoying the game if you just love trains and building routes.
I think I've completed the original campaign at least 4 times, and the newer one a few times too. I just wish people were still making new maps for the game!
Runs fine on windows 10. I'm playing this for the first time in 2024. Love it! great game, full of charm.
VERY CHALLENGING AND ADDICTING.
This game got me into gaming, so I may have some nostalgia bias. The graphics are obviously old but the style largely holds up. The strategy is multilayered & there's rarely a single correct answer. A well oiled system is very satisfying. My only complaint is that it's obviously a 1999 game-- there's several areas that lack QoL polish.
time a problem and fussy to use
