Wonderful visuals and steampunk aesthetic. Everything you want from a point and click adventure game - and more! Great voice cast. Highlight was the interconnectivity of the world and characters. You actions have GENUINE consequences to how to game plays out - not faux ones.
Good game with an engaging narrative. Nicely drawn graphics and a great atmosphere. The casebook is quite helpful to keep track of imporant things, as there are a lot of characters and plot elements. The game is a little light on puzzles, progress is mainly achieved through dialogues. As a negative, the achievements did not unlock on my playthrough (probably related to the fact that I played on Linux).
This was a surprisingly wonderful throw back to my point and click flashplayer game days. This has all the check boxes for an old victorian sleuth game, but with some fantasy lore. You play a detective who is going through a rough patch in life as you try your best to untangle both professional and personal webs. The basic concept of the game is simple, but the actions you take can all build up to a culmination or check you into a psychiatric facility - it's up to you!
This game was fun and challenging to play, yet it is still intuitive. It's nice to see that your actions matter and you can, indeed, make a mess out of your investigations if you aren't meticulous and thorough in your investigations. The personal arc that plays out through the game is a nice touch - even if it isn't the most well rounded and isn't executed in the best way. The culmination is a bit goofy (no I will not elaborate because spoilers).
Overall - 8/10. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and the challenge that it was. It felt like a grounded sleuth game that kept my attention throughout. Parts of the story line fell a bit flat though. But it's always nice to see that choices matter!
Very frustrating that the game doesn’t tell you that you may render large portions of the game unplayable. Almost no puzzles, it’s mostly an interactive story. Falsely tagged as point n click.
6-7/10
Did enjoy the playthrough. Picked up objects will be used automatically. That turns the focus more to thourough observation which felt nice for a detective game even if there is a LOT of talking. Difficulty was good I only looked up a couple things, mainly to avoid unwinnable states in the game which is quite easy to accomplish. Sierra games were even worse back then in that regard but 35 years ago we sure had a lot more nerve and time trying to figure it out noetheless :)
+ story speed was good, was looking forward to the solution
+ voice acting was ok-decent
- gay assistant
- unlikeable assistant
- npc portrait graphics look a bit wonky
- ending was a bit anti-climatic and short
- I ended up running in circles between the npcs in search of new dialogue options - a bit less would have felt sufficient too :)
- the single screen scenes can feel a bit tight I don't think there was any scrolling ever
Overall I don't regret playing it but the all-commenting assistant made me want to refund the game already after 15 minutes in. Won't replay.
It's clear time and effort went into making this and I'd rather give it a neutral review than negative, but I didn't enjoy playing it either.
* Characters & world-building: There was clearly some effort, but the world feels dull, and the characters are flat and simplistic. It seems they tried to build by adding a LOT of talking (comments on items/locations, dialogue with other characters, newspapers) - but little of it is interesting or compelling, and a good portion of it isn't even relevant. Reading/listening to so much with such little pay-off reduces the pacing to a crawl and drags the experience even more.
* Gameplay: As others have pointed out, this isn't a classic point-and-click with inventory and puzzles - almost everything revolves around your dialogue choices. This makes for a slow, dry experience - click a scene on the map, go and talk to the one person there, click on another scene on the map; rinse and repeat. I think this format would have worked better for a novel than a game.
* Dialogue choice paths (gameplay pt 2): I already knew from reading other reviews that dialogue choices are the main factor here and you can easily lock yourself out of a case accidentally. So for the first two cases I regularly referred to a walkthrough - but that made the game really boring (just following instructions). Case 3 I solved on my own, although I don't think "correctly". I was making good progress with case 4 when I hit a really frustrating dialogue lock: you ask a character about getting a spare key to a relative's house and he asks you why. One of your answer options is that "you want to look at his things", which seems pretty reasonable for a detective investigating a suspect. But choosing this option makes the detective say really odd things, creeping out the character and locking off your lead. This was the final straw for me and I decided to just stop playing and leave this review.
Great story, world building and characters. Gameplay revolves almost entirely around how you handle conversations which may be a turn off for people looking for traditional point n' click inventory/puzzle play.
You do need to pay attention to the conversations and evidence too, it is entirely possible to fail to solve a case or accuse the wrong person. Take your time, but it's not overly difficult either. I recommend using manual saves now and then and not just relying on it auto-saving at the map.
another amazing game from grundislav/ application systems heidelberg. not as amazing as unavowed, but it has the same mystery, inter-episode crossover, and satisfying ending. less replayable
Love the writing, especially the... unusual nature of the protagonist's sidekick, and the Poe references. However, I really don't appreciate how easy it is to hit a dead end and fail a case, either by making a seemingly innocent choice in conversation or by not knowing I can click something (there's no reveal hotspots function). Then the game lets me keep struggling even when success is impossible. That's not how point-and-click adventure games are supposed to work, and it takes all the fun out of what would otherwise be a delightful detective story.
solid fun, love the voice acting, excited to see what the next game these folks come up with
A gripping, atmospheric steampunk mystery.
Started out part interesting, part annoying, but the cases were fun (although not particularly challenging) and the story gradually grew more addictive. I also liked the vibe of old-fashioned adventure games à la Monkey Island. Definitely more a yes than a no.
Only 20 minutes into “Lamplight City”, the game reminds me of "Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers" (the close-up interrogation screen) and "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Serrated Scalpel". I really like this graphic style similar to the "Blackwell" games and "Unavowed". I'm investigating a burglary at a flower shop and already found the point of access. I'm curious to see where the story will take me.
5,5 hours into "Lamplight City" I solved case number 2. It's far easier picking the right suspect than with the Sherlock Holmes games, that's for sure. It's a bit too easy in that regard. I usually play games with lots of inventory puzzles, so this one is a nice change of pace, simply talking to people and collecting evidence. There was a lot of reading to be done in this second case though.
I only finished case number 4 after 10 hours, since I “had to” restart the case after doing something that made it unsolvable. I know I could simply continue the game, but I wanted to catch the killer! It's a fun game though still easy, except now I'm more careful with choosing the dialogue options, and I'm saving more often, too.
Finished "Lamplight City" in a little under 12,5 hours. Good game, though Bill was signposting a bit too hard sometimes, literally telling me where to go next. I know you're basically the narrator, but I'm perfectly capable of following up on leads myself, Bill! I'm wondering if the final case would play differently depending on whether or not you solved the other cases correctly. I only got 19 out of 41 achievements, so there's definitely lots more to do in this game. Bit of a sad ending too, even though it's really a good ending.
It's definitely fits the murder mystery trope and has multiple endings. Its easy game play, if your not much of a gamer and it was fun to find the random achievements. I would replay this or a similar game, so highly recommend!
an absolute gem of a P&C adventure! the artwork and fantastic voices provide a unique vibe and the non-comedy is refreshing!
"Lamplight City" offers a wonderfully engaging detective experience that stands out with its richly crafted, atmospheric setting. The Victorian-inspired world is brought to life with incredible attention to detail, making the game’s dark, gaslit streets feel immersive and authentic. The story is thoughtfully written, with sharp dialogues and unique characters that add depth and personality to each case.
The game’s investigation mechanics keep you on your toes, allowing for different story paths based on your choices, which makes every playthrough feel fresh and unique. Rare but cleverly designed puzzles provide a touch of challenge without detracting from the game’s narrative focus. The pixel art and atmospheric music perfectly capture the mood, while the voice acting brings a warmth and realism that enhances the overall experience.
Though it has its lighthearted quirks—such as the possibility of a case ending unexpectedly if you compliment your wife at the wrong time—it’s all part of the game’s unique charm. With Lamplight City, you’re in for a memorable, immersive journey, and the anticipation for the developer's upcoming game, Rosewater, is well-deserved.
It's a great game, save frequently as your choices actually matter!
Captivating conversations, stunning visuals that highlight classic America, and compelling narratives for each scenario are standout features. It's crucial to explore every location and engage with everyone and everything, along with the importance of dialogue choices. I look forward to the development of more games like this in the future.
Great adventure game. I can't wait for more from these developers.
It might feel pretty ordinary until you realize you can accuse the wrong people and half-ass the detective work to create different outcomes. That's definitely pretty unique.
Good artwork. Good voice work. Overall pretty good time if you like the genre.
Whodunit?
What I hate about this game:
It's linear to the Nth degree and if you make an error (that is you don't do what the game's creators want you to do) there's no going back and you have to start over from your last save. So when should you save? Got me. Just before the "error" I guess, but you'll play on and on and not realize you made an error until you find you can't go any further and the game hasn't ended.
What I like about this game:
The plots are pretty good, actually 5 cases to solve (I'm only on the 2nd case) and the voice acting is also good. Bill is a hoot!
Yes, I'll probably try to finish all the cases before I delete this to make room for something else.
If I were to give it a grade, it would be C- or 2 stars.
OK, I just finished all the cases and actually, they're very good. I'll revise my original Thumbs Down to a Thumbs Up because of the plot lines and the voice acting.
This game is amazing. The pixelart, voice acting and puzzles are amazing. I have literally enjoyed every part of it so far.
The game is buggy. Once I bought it, I had issues with saving (the developers helped me to fix it). Now after 4 years I tried to play it again and the achievements don't work with MacOS. The developers doesn't seem to care to fix it after so many years.
Overall enjoyable detective point n click with a nice atmosphere. Only real sour spot was having to redo one case because early on a dialog choice lead to being locked out of being able to find the correct suspect especially because it felt undeserved that the choice would end up having such an impact.
Great game. The story is very interesting and engaging and deals with heavy material without feeling cheap. The animation and the voice acting are great too. I would have liked to be a bit more challenged in the game and have more puzzles, but I prefer a game being a bit too easy rather than frustratingly difficult
Really dont care for the dialogue, the games atmosphere looked cool but I ended up just bored and annoyed.
bagus
I made a mistake in the first case (didn't realize that I needed to gather more evidence before making accusation), ok fine. But then in the third case because of that I can no longer visit the bank, and I can't wife to ask about DeVay (she has the conversation but the DeVay option doesn't show), which means I can't follow up on that either. It seems the only way to fix this would be to start the whole game over?!
Finally managed to finish the game and what a blast! It is a detective mainly conversational adventure game with very gritty and dark atmosphere with outstanding soundtrack and very good voice-acting. Very hearthily recommended.
