Look Out Drake The Down Syndrome Dragon Is Coming!
A strong contender for the worst video game of 2003, somehow has no redeeming qualities at all
Drake of the 99 basements
Ill give it this. It's an accurate port
I often find myself revisiting games that I played when I was a child in the early 2000s. I chuckle to myself wondering why I found so many games so hard back in the day, and why it was so difficult for me to get to the end credits. One of these games I struggled to complete but for some reason absolutely adored, was this hidden butt freckle right here. I played levels over and over again, wondering why I was so bad at the activity I adored the most, playing video games. Now, I just found out my video game rival is on Steam.
So I open it to play it and realize... "Oh my god... I wasn't bad at this game... this game just plays and is shit!" Holy fuck, how can a game have this bad of shooting mechanics and movement? How can it have such a unique, clearly Gennedy Tartakovsky inspired art style, then turn around and have this bad of voice acting. Very easily it would seem. And yet... I'm going to finish it for little me. Its what he would've wanted.
So little Malice, if you are slamming controllers on the ground and screaming into your pillow wondering why you're so terrible at this game. Its not you, its the game. Play Spider-Man or some shit.
I know what you're probably thinking. "hehe i shall play bad game. it'll be funny."
This game is funny for 30 seconds and then it becomes absolutely miserable.
Don't buy it. No matter the sale.
Don't even emulate it.
Don't waste time you could spend being happy playing something else.
I had actually beaten this game in one sitting, and I'm not so pleased with it. While it may look cool at first glance, with the art style that gives off some of that Batman: The Animated Series vibes, it's not until you actually start playing is where things get.....kinda less pleasant.
One of the early missions before you get the bullet time-esque ability has you fighting guys with machine guns in tight hallways and corridors, which can lead to some cheap deaths. Oh, and the bullet time ability in this game, while awesome in concept, isn't so great because not only does it slow down the world around Drake, it also slows Drake down as well. You will, however, need it in order to not die to the machine gun enemies so quickly. Supposedly, you also get the ability to.....uh, motivate souls (I think you move them towards you), and also the ability to detonate them later in the game, but as far as I can tell, they don't work at all. There's also an ability that DOES work, and it kills enemies in one hit, but you need to have your health higher than 99, which can be achieved by killing enemies and absorbing souls, and if your health is above 99, it'll slowly drain until it's back down to 99 again.
Speaking of enemies, a lot of them tend to be bullet sponges. While some of the enemies you face are robots and cyborgs, which is understandable, some of the other enemies you face are DOGS. Yes, somehow, dogs take a lot of bullets before they die in this game, and it literally makes no sense whatsoever. The bosses are even stranger; while they're mostly simple, some of the bosses you face take a decade and a half to kill, and then there will be times where you can't even tell if the boss is taking damage. Those bosses die when the game says they've had enough bullets.
Oh, and after a certain point early in the game, there's a game mechanic where, whenever you die, you get sent to the spirit realm or whatever for ten seconds. One of the four guardians insults you, and then you get sent back to the very start of the mission you died in. Cutscene and all. It wouldn't be too bad if dying wasn't so easy in this game, and a handful of levels are long, with some of them requiring you to find keycards.
So overall, this game's pretty bad. Anyone in their right mind would most likely save their $7 (or less, if it happens to be on sale) for something else, but if you're curious and want to see what this game is like for yourself? Well, I can't really stop you, now can I? (But in all seriousness, I can't, in good conscience, recommend this game to anyone.)
It's Drake-ing time
Personally I like the concept and intentions of this Cartoon Network-style Max Payne clone, but holy fuck the execution of it all
