25th Steam review.
Took me 2h6m to get 100% Steam achievements with a puzzle rating of 2019 on Chess.com (if that helps gauge your own timing) and playing at a casual pace before bed.
This is a relaxing and zen way to work through mate-in-one chess puzzles. There are no timers or puzzle ratings, so each level is just you and the board, focusing on finding checkmate in one move.
The game features a single looping background track that blends harmoniously and never feels repetitive. You can customise board colours and pieces, though options are limited. While the colours are easy on the eyes, I only liked one piece design and occasionally switched board colours for variety.
With 300 puzzles to solve, the game does offer some replayability, though the difficulty stays mostly consistent throughout. That said, a few puzzles took me significantly longer to solve, providing small moments of challenge. Playing this before bed was particularly enjoyable—the simple gameplay and soothing music created a relaxing atmosphere that helped me unwind and tire my mind out for sleep.
The game delivers on its promise but could benefit from a few QoL improvements. For example, selecting a piece doesn’t indicate how it moves or what its legal moves are, which might confuse less experienced players. There’s no tutorial, so beginners might feel lost when thrown directly into the puzzles.
While you can solve chess puzzles for free on other platforms, this game removes the pressure of ratings or performance metrics, letting you simply enjoy the puzzles. For the low price, the 300 levels make this a worthwhile experience for chess enthusiasts or anyone looking for a calming, distraction-free puzzle game.
I’m looking forward to exploring other games in the Zen Chess series and would recommend this one for its simplicity and stress-free gameplay. It’s a great way to unwind and enjoy chess puzzles at your own pace

I think Zen Chess: Mate in One was okay. It's cheap, only $0.99. I had three sessions for about 3 hours of total game time. That's it.
Fun and relaxing for chess lovers
OK game.
It's a delightful and relaxing puzzle game for chess enthusiasts or more (beginner) fans. While some puzzles are quite easy (as you'd expect from a one-move mechanic), others kept me stumped for several minutes, and I even had to step away from the game a few times. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The simple design and small price make it a great way to rediscover the joy of chess in a calm and meditative setting. Highly recommended for anyone looking to sharpen their field-scanning skills or just unwind with some chess! :)
You know how i know you know i suck at chess?
So if i, a complete noob, can see multiple solutions on several levels and the game doesn't accept any of the solutions except a single one, you know this game was poorly tested and not double checked.
A fine chess game. If you're looking for mate in 1/2/3/etc puzzles, you can get them in one of three ways:
1. Open source engines that lack polish and that sometimes require you to install your own chess AI
2. Online websites that require registration and sometimes membership
3. A game like this, with good polish and presentation, a simple soothing soundtrack, and reasonable pricing
I love my Zen chess puzzles.
level 91 has two solutions, but only one is accepted. The one that is not accepted WAS far more obvious than the correct answer, so it took me a long time before seeing the other option and I thought the level was just broken. I'm doubtful this game gets updates, but if it does and this can be fixed, see level 91 and move queen to top square above the king. There are no moves open to the king in this case and no other piece can block the queen. I quadruple checked this.
This title does serve its purpose. You get 300 mate-in-one chess puzzles for $0.99. I do think that it is lacking in its UI and for how limited in number the puzzles are compared to free chess sites (you can do unlimited free chess puzzles under any category - mate in 1/2/3/etc. - on lichess), I don't know if it's necessarily worth it for most people. If there were more board color options (all of them are very basic and bright) and the UI/UX elements were a bit more polished I would emphatically recommend it. It is very cheap, so it's hard to not recommend it, but for a paid chess title that's this simple I would expect a bit more polish. This is a title where a "neutral" Steam review option would be most appropriate.
