The game's quality of life is awful. Many quests are fetch quests with no way markers which ends up you googling the whereabouts of this NPC. The combat is okay, it's new but that's about it.

The Tem typing and balancing feels odd and it is very grindy. The game feels good for the first two island but starting at the third island the game feels like a chore.

The game becomes more unbearable considering you do not have access to fly/fast travel. This makes the game feel more grinding and just feel like a chore.

I love pokemon-like games and I really wanted to like this game. The Tem designs are wonderful and there were some features I like that should've been in pokemon games, however it falls short as it tries to focus itself as a MMO rather than a game like Pokemon.

If you like grinding and doing chores, this is the game for you.

It's another creature collector. I like some of the directions they went but didn't understand the others.

I haven't played in about... 3 or 4 years but it's probably worth checking out on sale. Creature collectors always fall short of what you want.

While the game is fun for the first little bit, it kind of falls flat for both an online and multiplayer perspective. The co-op mode can be fun, but being online and seeing other peoples' temtems almost always contains massive spoilers for future tems and takes the piss out of seeing your starter evolve because the people around you who are ahead of you will usually have them out and about.

My main issues:
- Random forced losses in the story mode which come out of nowhere, very annoying.

- There are WAY too many tems that just.. don't evolve, or only evolve once with a design that would imply that there's more for it to evolve.

- It feels like defense stats and level grinding amount to nothing. Nothing feels worse than being 20+ levels higher and being forced to exploit weaknesses because a neutral matchup on a strong move does nothing. It also doesn't feel great when something 10+ levels below you does loads of damage just because it happened to deal 2x damage.

- Some passives just feel like they exist simply to artificially make the story mode more annoying, are only viable for a competitive aspect, or just seem like they missed the mark. Looking at you, Camaraderie.

- While I'm happy that there's no microtransactions for serious issues, I don't plan on playing this game for the long run, thus grinding for shop currency just isn't really happening. I gladly would have dropped twenty bucks or something to be able to buy a nice outfit for my character while I tried to progress through the story but that just wasn't happening.

- Story overall is very lackluster. All of the main characters just seem unnecessarily intense, do absolutely nothing for the story beyond other people telling you they're important, or shoehorn you into dialogue like you're the best of pals when you've met them all of once like four quests ago. The dialogue for this game is fun, but how is the writing so atrociously bad in comparison?

Overall, don't spend the money on this, even if it's on sale. Go get a pokemon romhack from somewhere and just go play your favourite gen again. Or go play a multiplayer romhack. Or go play something with an actually decent competitive scene. This simply isn't worth it.

I don't recommend Temtem as a solo experience.
There are so many fetch quests all over the place that the adventure is pretty much a Fedex driver simulator. The plot is super generic, the soundtrack forgettable, and a couple NPCs have fun dialogues, but nothing to call home about.

After 50 to 90 hours of that, there isn't much for you to do, besides some more grinding to put up with the endgame challenges, playing the dressing game, and hunting for shinies, which is as boring as it sounds.

The saving grace of Temtem's solo side is probably the artstyle. Varied and inspired 3D landscapes aren't something you get to see much in PC monster taming games. Creatures and combat animations also look really cool.

That being said, if you're not specifically looking for a wholesome PvP experience, you're probably better off spending your money elsewhere.

Now, as far as PvP's concerned, Temtem was a really refreshing experience for me.
Not only there is a solid enough playerbase that you can actually find matches at all times of the day (which can't be said about any other turn-based monster collection PC game, as far as I know), the game comes with a lot of innovations and solid execution.

A draft formula with pick and ban phases, where you put together a team of 8 creatures, but only get to play 5, a lot of moves having extra effects depending on your partner's type and very clever non-conventional statuses come to mind.

Also, considering there's less than 100 fully evolved creatures in the game, the amount of viable teams and playstyles is actually astounding. I believe the idea was to make it so that any monster could be relevant in PvP, and it works. There's a variety of stuff that you can try here that it took Pokemon games generations and generations to achieve.

It is not all pink. The balance team got let go a tad too early, and some sharp edges remain. That one OP temtem that fits literally anywhere, a couple moves that are just way too strong... But at the end of the day, the balance is still good enough that you can make anything work with enough dedication.

Not a masterpiece by any standards, not the game of my life, but one that I'm happy to have played and might come back to once in a while.

I feel like the npc's are going to cancel me if I choose the wrong chat option.

Tried so many days to get into it but dual battles, an overly open map, too many quests. Could have been good but feels empty even at $13

The combat is tedious. Going from one area to another will have you face 15+ npcs. The type +/- doesn't make any sense and the game doesn't even let you know if some is effective/ineffective up front until you catch the temtem. You can out level the enemy team and they still hit harder than you do. The side quests are randomly placed and you have to WALK back and forth to complete, no fast travel is insane. I wanted to like it and it just isn't there. Pokemon is king for a reason. This might as well be AI created slop.

A great game ruined by greed, and finally abandoned so the devs could chase a trend when it was arguably already too late.

sold as MMO, not an MMO, won't be getting more updates.

How could anyone recommend this.

not worth the full price, wait till it's around 25$ then it's worth it, otherwise it's a pretty good Creature-Collector game, I'ma just call them CCs from now on, typing that out was aids

Okay so I love pokemon games I think the animals are so adorable. It feels too much like Pokemon to me but that's the point cause its literally a Pokemon like game. It's definitely not a game i can play for hours at a time cause its fight, catch, fight, catch, fight, catch so on....but I'm a sucker for cute animals and exploration. I will say though it is really annoying running into like NPC battles back to back with no choice but to fight. I get its the level up aspect but it literally is back to back to back when I just wanna catch tem tem. Another thing is quests aren't marked on your map when you go to do the next part of your quest so you kinda just have to wander ( both a good and bad I got lost a couple times but got to explore cause of it). I recommend it because its something easy to play when you feel brain dead and if you like cute animals then this is for you!

Game had a ton of potential. When it first came out I played the game through and got that same Pokemon vibe. It never really felt like an MMO, which was a confusing selling point for them.

Eventually they came to the conclusion it wasn't worth building the game further, and started aggressively monetizing.

If I could give this a neutral rating I would. It's good for a play through, but if like many others you're looking for something more akin to a pokemon replacement, this isnt it. Whats here is it. Nothing more to come. No more story, no more tems.

Played in early access and release, fun game. But it's a tentative recommendation based on the unclear marketing.

This is an EXTREMELY competent creature collector and arguably the biggest contender against Pokemon in that genre. It does a lot to set itself apart, both in its monster design and in its battle mechanics. Even with the slightly inconsistent art style, I genuinely love most of the Tems in the game. This game is absolutely worth $45, and it stands up to most of the mainline Pokemon titles in quality, just with a much more indie game vibe to it - it's a bit darker than Pokemon, but also has a better sense of humor.

Unfortunately, despite that the game is billed as basically a "Pokemon MMO", it straight up just isn't. There's a linear story like every other Pokemon-type game, a sadly unsatisfying "a winrar is you" ending, and no endgame content beyond grinding for cosmetics or shinies. It's been out for a while by now and the devs have made it clear that there will never be any future content updates for the game, just more microtransactions and cosmetics. It is a straightforward creature collector game like all the others, it's just doing everything you want from a creature collector game perfectly.

I would also play it while you have the chance. With how Nintendo is now cracking down on Palworld and the nature of patent law, there's a VERY high chance that Temtem will be next on the chopping block when Nintendo is through with their current target. The nature of patent law means that now that Nintendo has decided to start the fight with Palworld, it will be legally REQUIRED to target other similar games infringing on its patents, and Temtem unfortunately does since Nintendo has effectively patented the basic mechanics of a creature collector game.

An absolute delight for anyone who loves creature-collecting games. The monster designs are very cool, especially the later you get and is probably the biggest draw discovering new ones. The battle system is genuinely engaging, the stamina system in particular kept it interesting enough. I wouldn't put it as an incredibly difficult game but it's not pokemon easy either.

I haven't finished the game yet but there is one major flaw imo: the traversal. The lack of a fast travel system or meaningful movement tools makes the frequent backtracking between zones feel like a chore. There was one npc I got a side quest joke that made a little joke about how the quest I was about to go on was going to be a nightmare and I think it was meant to be funny but it just kind of felt like a kick in the shins. Especially later in the game, running back and forth through long routes without shortcuts can be a bit of a nightmare, breaking the flow and pacing. And sometimes you're going back to completely different islands, traversing up down and all around only to head back to an island.

I didn't think it would be so bad but if it keeps getting as bad as it is this review could go from recommended to not very quickly. I'm often finding myself not bothering with side quests solely because the traversal to get there is so painful.

As of right now I'd still recommend if you like the genre, the traversal is thus far my only real gripe with the game which is why it's keeping me hooked.

Decent and fun, but oh boy they throw trainers at you everywhere way too much, I am still new to this game, got it on 70% sale, I'll edit my review after more playtime.

Worse community than League of Legends players. Asked for help on how to breed and was met with a barrage of insults.

Whats the point of recommending a game that isn't going to offer more content?
Sold to everyone as a mmo. Was real fun at the start then the battle passes started. Then more microtransactions. Then saying no more new temtems were going to be added.

Horibble game that barely works. Game has horrible balance and evolutions dont mean shit. Teaming up works horribly and crashing + getting stuck happends all the time. Bought this game way back when it was 10 euro and i wouldn't even pay that. Stay the fuck away

This game was fun before they introduced the battle pass. I recommended it better than Pokémon until they introduced the battle pass, which ruined the game for me.

It's okay, I guess, if you don't own a switch. But in my opinion if you do own a switch, just play Pokemon. Pokemon is better.

I would absolutely love if they did make a TemTem 2 though and make it 3D and open world so it could actually try to compete with Pokemon though.

Unfortunately, you cannot skip battle animations. That gets tiresome really fast -- I managed 2.5 hours and the game is now gathering dust in my Steam inventory.

It's a good clone/spin-off. It became much more consumer friendlier after they stopped supporting the game. Duality of life after all! Don't purchase it for it's MMO capabilities, just purchase for the Pokemon scratch you came here for. Anything beyond that will disappoint you.

Fun monster catcher, greatly enjoy the cooperative experience. Do wish some of the advanced features were available from the start of the game but playing through the campaign once I think is a smart way to experience the game.

Even after playing this game for 100+ hours I struggle to recommend it.

Don't get me wrong, it has its moments. Some of the designs go hard and it's very fun to play with a friend. If you like monster collecting games you will probably get some enjoyment out of Temtem. However, the vast majority of the gameplay was just annoying and tedious. I kept playing because I was attached from following it for years through development, and because it was expensive and I wanted my money's worth. Temtem is not worth $45 period. If you buy it, buy it on sale.

The game itself is unnecessarily grindy, items are impossible to afford in the early game, quests send you back and forth across the universe constantly for no good reason, and the ending is extremely bad. There is also no endgame, so after you get through the story, you can look forward to hoping you can find some competent players to do lairs with you and that's pretty much it. Temtem as a whole has SO MUCH POTENTIAL but is too undercooked to live up to it, and I wish the devs would give it some more time in the oven.

Plenty of creative endgame and refreshing roster of types and mon's.

Story AI is challenging
Competitive AI is at a competent PvP skill level
Gamepass is bought with in-game currency
End-game dungeons you can solo or up to 5 players
Nuzlocke/Random/Speedrun/Randolocke built into the game, uses your current file to start a separate play through with rewards.

This really has everything you're looking for in both a PvE and PvP sense of these style of games.

It may not compare to Pokemon in its entirety, but as a clone it has more to offer than any single Pokemon.

The kind of game that makes you say out loud "why on earth was this a design choice???" at least 35 times out loud while playing it.

The first words that come to mind for TemTem are "really, really satisfying". I have found my way back to this game multiple times when looking for a creature collector fix, and it's always just so fun and charming.

Very fun game and progressively gets more challenging. Engaging story and a lot of side quests, I've been playing on switch and steam so I have around 70 hrs total so far

Nice to teach kids that they as Male need to Dye Hair and play dress up with "Body Type" orientation. LOL. Anyway traversal is bad and has irritating encounters. Just not that appealing with some mechanics and not for me.

Cool alternative creature collector with mmo like features. However the final fight is some BS so good luck completing the story unless you bring your S+++ team.

Whomever made the temporary team idea needs to be fired. It is by far the worst part of the game.

Baffling game design. I wanted to like it and give a good review but so many aspects are just terrible and unnecessarily grindy. If it was actually an MMO, that would be understandable but it is a single player game painted up to look like an attractive MMO experience.

I wanted to have fun but the longer I spent with this game, the more frustrating of a chore i found it to be. Trying to find people to play with is pretty hard. Most players are pretty toxic, especially if you are new and asking questions/unsure about how things work. God forbid you question why all the characters are queer..

Uuhh, this was really fun when it came out! I bet it still is!

VERY good game. I genuinely like this game more than Pokemon. A living economy, transparency about what all the numbers mean, etc. Easier to play and genuinely a ton of fun. 10/10 game

Fun enough for coop if you like pokemon like games, but it gets fairly repetitive VERY early.

I got it on sale, and I have enjoyed my time on it, but, there are dozens of issues with the game and the devs.

Ehh..I do not hate it, but watch for it's lowest price. Pretty sure I paid 12 bucks. I get on every once in a while, and have left it idle a few times....this game, with no future updates; is worth 5. On an old android galaxy......

I can recommend this game as a Pokemon-like multiplayer game, but it is NOT an MMO. The developers have announced that the game is ending its development and there will be no additional content such as new creatures, maps, etc. The game was supposed to be "Pokemon on PC", but the project outgrew the creators and they abandoned the game in favor of their future productions.

This game sucks, why would you make a single player an MMO? It ruins the experience seeing all the random people littering the world. What a stupid way to hamstring your own success. How about you let me choose some other pronouns, like not/buying?

Fun co-op game! I have been playing it with my bf, he's on ps5 and I'm on PC. I love that it is cross play and coop so we can play a game together that we both enjoy. It's fun running around together in the open world. Especially when we miscommunicate on who is attacking which temtem and we're like well.. that didn't go as planned lol! I have learned through this game he does not know the difference between the male/female symbols, so we swapped to "the temtem directly in front of you" or "the temtem on the top of the screen!".

There are still a couple random bugs we have encountered, but nothing game breaking. A couple of times now a battle will start, and it shows the battle icon in the upper left of the screen with the timer, so it thinks I'm in the battle, but I'm not actually in the battle so I cannot pick my moves. It takes foreeeeeeeever to finish a single fight when this happens because of how long the timer waits before it'll let the battle move forward for just a single action. Thankfully it has only happened twice, and simply logging out and back in will fix it right up.

Mechanically better than Pokémon. Built entirely around 2v2. Moves cost mana and the stronger ones require a certain number of turns to pass between uses. Never cared for IV's, EV's and shinies but the auction house is a welcome workaround.

Dialogue however is painfully dragged out to a point where I was skipping it. Sidequests will have you backtracking to and fro over cheap consumables. Surprisingly difficult, so even more backtracking to heal up (had a repel on at all times). Was regularly looking up creature types because they aren't obvious on visuals alone. It's a kids game not suitable for kids; or adults apparently, there's only a 6% completion rate.

As for the multiplayer, seeing other players mind their own business does not qualify as an MMO. All of the interesting emotes and cosmetics are locked behind battlepasses so everybody looks the same throughout. There is online co-op. You control one Temtem each with no idea what or who your partner has selected so it’s just an added inconvenience.
